This communication supplements our regular communication channels and provides a personal update from New Zealand Golf to our key partners in the golf industry. Please feel free to pass this to anyone at your club or District Association who you think may wish to read this update. This year New Zealand Golf is concentrating on delivering results that have a positive impact on the game of golf. Our activity is guided by our Strategic Plan which defines our two core objectives as Growing the Game and Supporting the Game. The update below covers a few areas of current activity under these objectives. 1

2 Regional Club Development Officers. New Roles Commenced = More Support to Golf Clubs As part of New Zealand Golf s endeavours to provide a greater commitment and service delivery to grass roots golf, from April 2014 we started to trial the employment of 2 Regional Golf Club Development Officers in two regions (Bay of Plenty/Waikato & Auckland/North Harbour/Northland). The Regional Club Development Officers will directly facilitate the delivery of growth and support services to golf clubs in partnership with the existing District Association network. While the Regional Club Development Officers will work closely with District Associations, they will be employed directly by New Zealand Golf with reporting to the national office. The key responsibilities of each Regional Club Development Officer will be to work directly with clubs and District Associations to build club capability, to act as a link between national body and District Associations, and to be a conduit for nationally developed projects and training opportunities. Carl Fenton, formerly of North Harbour Sport, has been employed to be the RCDO for Auckland, North Harbour and Northland Golf while Mark Webb, who has been the Bay of Plenty Golf Development Manager for the past two years, will be the RCDO for Bay of Plenty and Waikato Golf. The two new members are the first RCDOs added to the New Zealand Golf team as the governing body looks to achieve its mission of growing the love of golf. Fenton has four years of experience working with Regional Sports Trusts (RST) and has established strong and relevant relationships with Auckland RSTs, Sport Northland, Auckland Council s Sport and Rec team, Sport NZ, Auckland Sport, First Tee, Harbour Golf, and the North Shore and Rodney local boards. He has extensive programme development experience and has developed and led three, very successful, regional health programmes in the North Shore and Rodney. Fenton also has good knowledge in budget control and resource allocation as well as business development. Meanwhile Webb has a proven background in an accomplished and diverse management and leadership career. This most recently includes the Golf Development Manager role with Bay of Plenty Golf and prior to that eight years of experience in Cricket Development with one of the largest District Associations in New Zealand. Webb has huge experience working within the New Zealand Golf and New Zealand Cricket Development programmes. He enjoys managing and motivating individuals and groups to achieve successful outcomes and has a great track record of achieving results through others. After careful review of progress in 2014 and if the roles are successful, the intention by March 2015 is for New Zealand Golf to continue the employment of Regional Club Development Officers in a few other locations throughout the country. National Membership Campaign LOVE GOLF 2

3 Thank you for your support of the LOVE Golf National Membership Campaign to date. We are extremely pleased with the progress made so far, the feedback, and also the potential for where LOVE Golf can grow to in the future. New Zealand Golf has developed the LOVE GOLF Membership Campaign as a long term initiative to increase membership, participation numbers and the overall perception of golf throughout the county. REGISTERED CLUBS: 154 total to date (target 200 by end of 2014). Even though there is lots of activity currently, this campaign is a long term initiative and clubs can continue to sign up and be part of the campaign. For those clubs who have not signed up please contact Jan Rowsell at New Zealand Golf (jan@nzgolf.org.nz) or your local District Association for more details. CURRENT PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITY As you will doubt have seen across general and social media channels, there is currently a flurry of promotional support underway and the good news is that the campaign is delivering results already with many clubs gaining new membership specifically as a result of the campaign. You may have also seen the second promotional video which has recently been released. The video was filmed at Queenstown during the New Zealand Open Championship and features the likes of Prime Minister John Key, former Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting, former Black Caps captain Stephen Fleming, American professional Rocco Mediate and celebrities Chris Judd and Phil Keoghan talking about their LOVE of golf. To view the second LOVE Golf video click here The first LOVE Golf video of #Kogoespro was an exceptional success as it attracted more than 115,000 views on YouTube and global media coverage. It was also well used in promos by Sky Sports during their golf programming. To view the first LOVE Golf video click here MEMBER get MEMBER PROMOTION It is fitting that the New Zealand Open features prominently in the second LOVE Golf Campaign. New Zealand Golf recently launched the Member get Member initiative where all New Zealand Golf Club members, who encourage new golfers to join a golf club, will go into the draw to win the ultimate New Zealand Open experience in The ultimate New Zealand Open experience includes; flights to Queenstown, five nights twin share accommodation at the Kawarau Hotel (including daily breakfast for two), a practice round at The Hills and 3

4 Millbrook, a position in the Pro Am field, a Champions Lounge pass for two, access to the tournament shuttles and LOVE Golf apparel. The main prize is available for all NZ Golf Members who introduce a new member from March 31 to December 31 this year. The Member get Member campaign is based on research of the local game which indicated that eight out of 10 golfers join a club through a family member or friend. As well as the main prize there will be monthly prizes up for grabs for both the New Zealand Golf Members who introduces a new member and the new member. The monthly draw will be done on the last working day of each month. NZ Golf will advise of the monthly winners through an edm and there will also be notification on and the LOVE Golf and NZ Golf Facebook and Twitter pages. The Member get Member program is one of a number of initiatives to be launched in the LOVE Golf Campaign as New Zealand Golf takes a long term approach to address declining club membership. To enter the LOVE Golf Member get Member Program Click Here CLUB TOOLKIT Congratulations to those clubs who are using the online toolkit to develop their own promotional posters and imagery. For those clubs who have not signed up please contact Jan Rowsell at New Zealand Golf (jan@nzgolf.org.nz) or your local District Association for more details. LOVE Golf: #kogoespro video claims Innovative Excellence Award New Zealand Golf has claimed the award for Innovation Excellence at the annual New Zealand Sport and Recreation Sector Awards for the now world famous Ko Goes Pro YouTube video. New Zealand Golf was nominated as a finalist alongside Project Litefoot Trust s Liteclub Programme and Sport Wellington s Strategic Plan for To watch the Ko goes pro video Click Here Sport New Zealand believed that innovation can be described as the introduction of something new or different. On that basis, the announcement that Lydia Ko was turning professional was certainly innovative. The method for the announcement broke with tradition and was a huge success. Befitting Lydia s age and personality, social media was used as the channel and resulted in global cut through. Incorporating popular All Black Israel Dagg into the viral announcement video was also a masterstroke, broadening its appeal outside of the normal golfing audience and showcasing the game in a fun and youthful way. Further illustrating the announcement s success, it was selected as one of the candidates for sporting moment of the year at February s Westpac Halberg Awards. The Ko Goes Pro YouTube video received more than 115,000 views on YouTube, global media interest and on the day of its release it was trending on twitter. 4

New Zealand Golf Annual Report Published 2013 was a successful year for our organisation and important progress has been made in several areas that will pay dividends for New Zealand Golf and the sport as a whole in future years. From a financial perspective, we made good progress in However, there still remains a number of financial challenges ahead of us. The surplus for the year sits at $54,415 with positive net cash inflows of $472,693. While this is a great improvement from the significant deficit of 2012, it was below our budgeted targets for Securing appropriate levels of sustainable revenue remains the core challenge however this is set against a background of declining traditional membership levies, reducing charitable trust income and a very tough commercial sponsorship market. The demand for delivery of services increases each year and we will need to find new ways to increase our revenue if we are to deliver on the ambitions set out in our strategic plan. 6

7 Paul Fyfe, the Chairman of the Board of New Zealand Golf, said that while New Zealand Golf has made encouraging progress in 2013 it faces many challenges and hard work on the road ahead. Our new strategic direction and focus provides us renewed confidence that with a Whole of Golf approach to the issues facing the game, we will be able to make significant progress in the coming years, he said in his Chairman s report. It is important to remember that golf does remain in very good heart in New Zealand and remains one of the largest participation sports. We have a substantial player base and a wonderful network of clubs and assets around the country. As a final note, we offer our thanks to the community of golf for their contribution to the game. Our progress to date would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our staff, our District Associations and our clubs. Most people who contribute to the game of golf do so on a voluntary basis and for this we offer our sincere thanks and appreciation. To view the New Zealand Golf Annual Report and Statement of Accounts for 2013: CLICK HERE Junior Tiger National Winners Found Auckland golfer John Misa felt relieved and excited when he was the Junior Tiger National Champion at the Manawatu Golf Club yesterday. The 11 year old from the Manukau Golf Club carded a three under par 33 over nine holes to win the 11 and Under Boys Division by three shots for his second division victory in the event. Misa was one of four winners at the National Final alongside Rhose Zheng (11 and under girls), James Hydes (12 14 boys) and Juliana Hung (12 14 girls). Zheng overcame Silvia Brunotti in a playoff and Hydes also defeated Greg Shaw in sudden death to secure the win and a place in the draw for the trip to the Junior World Golf Championship and Disneyland. The draw was made under police supervision and Misa s name came up on the wheel. He couldn t believe that he had claimed the trip of a lifetime. I didn t expect to win the draw and when my name came up I was so excited, he said. Misa, who plays off a 16.7 handicap, said he hit the ball and putted well in the National Final. The course was in really good condition and apart from making a couple of silly mistakes I was pretty happy with my score of three under par. 7

8 I love golf so much. I am down at the Manukau Golf Club practicing a lot and I will put in a lot of hard work to be ready for this trip. It is an honour to be representing New Zealand. The Junior Tiger concept, which has been a great success since it was introduced in 2009, is geared to get more kids playing golf at both a competitive and participant level. The series is designed to create an environment for kids at golf clubs and about giving young New Zealanders a chance to thrive in a fun competition. Almost 1000 kids participated in regional qualifiers throughout the country with the leading four players from each district qualifying for the national final with travel assistance provided by New Zealand Golf. Winners at the final in each division then went into draw to win trip to Disneyland and an entry into World Junior Golf Championships being played in July 2014 in San Diego. The ultimate prize is amazing thanks to the support of Harvey World Travel but this should not detract from the love of the game and have these kids come together representing their district and having a fun filled and pressure free day. We hope that the event inspires and motivates the players to keep playing golf as one of their chosen sports and to aspire to reach high standards in the game. The ultimate goal is to encourage more young Kiwi golfers into the game and develop their love of golf. Junior Tiger has filled a vital pathway from introducing young Kiwi kids to the game of golf, providing them a series of events to play in, through to inspiring them to continue playing golf whether as a recreational activity or to reach the highest level in the game. Congratulations to the 2014 New Zealand Amateur Champions Manawatu golfer Josh Munn has claimed what he called the biggest win of my career when he secured an incredible come from behind victory at the New Zealand Amateur Championship. The New Zealand rep rallied on the homeward stretch to defeat Auckland golfer Tae Koh on the 37 th hole in cold and windy conditions at the Nelson Golf Club in what will be remembered as one of the great finals. Munn, who has won twice on the Charles Tour, and claimed the prized Lake Macquarie Amateur in Australia, was in disbelief to be the last man standing as the New Zealand Amateur Champion. This is the trophy that I have always wanted to win, said the 23 year old. Ever since I was 13 years old I have talked about winning the NZ Amateur with my coach Andre [White] and to do it is just unbelievable. It is without doubt the biggest win of my career. Meanwhile former New Zealand rep Chantelle Cassidy claimed the NZ Women s Amateur Championship in emphatic fashion when she defeated Napier golfer Kate Chadwick by 7 and 6 in fine conditions. Cassidy dedicated the biggest win of her amateur career to her late Great Grandad who passed away the week of the championship last year. It means so much to do it for my Great Grandpa, said Cassidy of the Cambridge Golf Club. 8

9 He has been on my mind all week and I am so happy to have won this tournament. New Zealand Amateur Championship Results Nelson Golf Club Final: Chantelle Cassidy (Cambridge) bt Kate Chadwick (Napier) 7 and 6 Joshua Munn (Manawatu) bt Tae Koh (Manukau) at the 37 th hole Lydia Ko Wins on the PGA Tour Lydia Ko has claimed her first win on the LPGA Tour as a professional. The 17 year old, who won the Canadian Open back to back as an amateur, captured her maiden pro win on tour in her rookie season when she won the inaugural Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic in California. Ko handled the pressure superbly on the closing stretch. She birdied the 18th hole to card a three under 69 in final round at the Lake Merced Golf Club to hold off World No. 3 American Stacy Lewis by a stroke. It completed a special week for the young Kiwi as she recorded her third LPGA victory and her first as a member of the Tour. The former World No.1 amateur also turned 17 this week and was named one of Time Magazine s 100 Most Influential People in the World. Normally they would a Sweet 16, but I would say it s Sweet 17, said Ko after her win. I don t think I would have any better birthday week. I won here. I finally turned 17. I [have] been 16 for a long time. Yeah, you know, top 100 most influential people, I don t know what I ve done to get there, but it s just a really special week for me. It was a special week for golf fans as they watch a great duel unfold between Lewis and Ko for the entire final round. The turning point came when Ko made back to back birdies on 13 and 14 to jump to 11 under and take a two shot lead over her rival. The highly ranked American stayed in the fight when she birdied the 16th to cut Ko s lead to one. Lewis missed an important chance on the 17 th and all three of the final group, including Jenny Shin, had a chance to claim the title on the final hole. Ko showed her experience in winning titles by closing it out with a clutch birdie. The win was made even more special as Ko s Dad, who wasn t at the Canadian Open when she won on both occasions, was on hand to see his daughter s first LPGA Tour win as a pro. I m going to cry now, she said. It s very special to have him here. It s his second LPGA tournament he s watched. My mum is always going to be with me. She said she would have flown over on Saturday, but luckily she came over earlier to spend the whole week with us. The Pinehurst School Student has now climbed from No.4 to No.2 on the Official World Golf Rankings the highest position ever held by a New Zealand golfer.
