As reported last month, this year we are concentrating on delivering results that have a positive impact on the game of golf and we are delighted that so many good things are already underway in With your support, we are confident we are heading in the right direction and doing good things for the game of golf. This communication supplements our regular communication channels and provides a personal update from New Zealand Golf to our key partners in the golf industry. Please feel free to pass this to anyone at your club or District Association who you think may wish to read this update. National Membership Campaign LOVE GOLF 1
Thank you for your support of the LOVE Golf National Membership Campaign to date. We are extremely pleased with the progress made so far, the feedback, and also the potential for where LOVE Golf can grow to in the future. New Zealand Golf has developed the LOVE GOLF Membership Campaign as a long term initiative to increase membership, participation numbers and the overall perception of golf throughout the county. REGISTERED CLUBS: 140 total to date (target 200 by end of 2014). Even though there is lots of activity currently, this campaign is a long term initiative and clubs can continue to sign up and be part of the campaign. For those clubs who have not signed up please contact Jan Rowsell at New Zealand Golf (jan@nzgolf.org.nz) or your local District Association for more details. As you will doubt have seen across general and social media channels, there is currently a flurry of promotional support underway and the good news is that the campaign is delivering results already with many clubs gaining new membership specifically as a result of the campaign. Look out for more upcoming activity on the LOVE Golf website (including some new videos recently filmed at the NZ Open with Love Golf ambassadors). Congratulations to those clubs who are using the online toolkit to develop their own promotional posters and imagery (such as Waahi Taakaro Golf Club below). 2
For those clubs who have not signed up please contact Jan Rowsell at New Zealand Golf or your local District Association for more details Club Seminar Series Central Region Dates Completed Following the successful Club Seminars held in 2013, the first round of the Secrets to Success Membership Growth & Retention Seminar Series has been completed in Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatu and Wellington. RESULTS: 54 people attended 35 individual golf clubs represented Satisfaction score of 8.6 out of 10 3
This round of seminars is focused on Membership Growth and Retention very timely given the national membership campaign underway. The workshops cover a number of key and very important keys to success in order to build a higher performing club: Key #1: FOCUS Where golf personnel spend their time Key #2: GROWTH How golf clubs sell and market their services Key #4: NUMBERS Managing everything by the numbers Key #5: IMPLEMENTATION The way to get things done The participants are introduced to: How to BE the person to DO the right things to HAVE success at your club. Change Management Process. How to FOCUS and PRIORITISE using The Achiever Matrix. Delegation Model The Golf Club Growth Equation Leadership Focus Exercise Building the BRICKS to retain and recruit members Golf Club Feedback To Date: Good workshop. Excellent for personal development. Appreciate NZ Golf s investment in these types of seminars Wellington Golf Club Manager Certainly a lot of valid information and ideas to work with and on the workbook is great Palmerston North Board Member Recognising peoples strengths on the committee to help people move forward and the club to move forward Wanganui Volunteer The most valuable points were the initiatives for golf clubs to increase membership and make the club more efficient and effective New Plymouth Club Manager All seminars are provided by New Zealand Golf FREE of charge. Dates for the remaining regions throughout the country will be confirmed in the near future. SNAG Golf New Zealand Partnership The partnership began late in 2013 with the aim of working together in the clubs and community areas. SNAG is currently delivering products and services to thousands of young people so New Zealand Golf would like to ensure the products and services are delivered in a manner that helps the golf sector grow and drives young people into entry point products/experiences at golf clubs. SNAG Golf s results over the past two years speak for themselves with over 10,000 new entrants introduced to the game in Auckland and with a closer partnership with New Zealand Golf, we are confident that this will grow substantially. 4
New Zealand Golf s partnership with SNAG Golf New Zealand has gained great momentum with four SNAG in the Parks successfully staged in Auckland and Christchurch over the summer where 4,262 children and 1,413 adults (5,675 Total) were introduced to Nine Hole SNAG Course and SNAG Golf Target Range. New Zealand Golf encourages District Associations, Clubs and Regional Sports Trusts to build a relationship with SNAG Golf NZ and help to achieve their local community sport outcomes. We are currently looking to strategically align SNAG Golf NZ with District Associations and Regional Sports Trusts to achieve collaborative outcomes within local communities. The First Tee of New Zealand Partnership New Zealand Golf and The First Tee have been working together for over 5 years however recently (January 2014) established a new partnership that sees the organisations committing to work together for the same goals in the growth of the game area. The First Tee offers a world leading service that not only engages young people in the game of golf but also provides a wider benefit to the community by instilling life skills and values in young people. The First Tee programmes contribute to the overall game of golf by specifically promoting the lifelong values associated with the game. Both parties have established clear and quantifiable objectives for the partnership and junior golf in New Zealand including spreading The First Tee programme to over 100 schools and 30 golf clubs in In time, New Zealand Golf believes The First Tee programme could be the lead junior golf programme in the country. New Zealand Golf has communicated its endorsement and support of The First Tee to its District Associations and Clubs, encouraging these entities to support and host the programme and any fund raising initiatives in their areas. Sign Your Club Up Today for the Golf Club Group Buying Scheme New Zealand Golf has paid the 2014 joining fee for all golf clubs in New Zealand to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity to save on your existing operational outgoings. It s a simple process that involves you informing the n3 Team (formally GSB) about your existing business vendors, they cross reference them against their 100+ suppliers to determine whether their negotiated deals beat the deal you re already getting. If it does then they will do all the work to transfer your vendor account; if it doesn t then you keep your existing vendor and continue as before. All of 5
this is FREE to Golf Clubs and all you need to do is activate your account by contacting the n3 Team and arrange all the details. To activate your account and start saving on your existing operational costs: Sign up online: it works Phone them: them: Hastings Golf Club Case Study: and resources Well done to all the Golf Clubs who have activated their accounts and are already making significant savings. Regional Golf Club Development Officers New Roles from 22 April = More Support to Golf Clubs As part of New Zealand Golf s endeavours to provide a greater commitment and service delivery to grass roots golf, from April 2014 we will trial the employment of 2 Regional Golf Club Development Officers in two regions (Bay of Plenty/Waikato & Auckland/North Harbour/Northland). The Regional Club Development Officers will directly facilitate the delivery of growth and support services to golf clubs in partnership with the existing District Association network. While the Regional Club Development Officers will work closely with District Associations, they will be employed directly by New Zealand Golf with reporting to the national office. The key responsibilities of each Regional Club Development Officer will be to work directly with clubs and District Associations to build club capability, to act as a link between national body and District Associations, and to be a conduit for nationally developed projects and training opportunities. The recruitment process for these roles is now completed and we will be announcing the new employees shortly. It is intended that each role will commence 22 April. After careful review of progress in 2014 and if the roles are successful, the intention by March 2015 is for New Zealand Golf to continue the employment of Regional Club Development Officers in a few other locations throughout the country. NZ Open Championship Event Set to Thrive Under New Arrangement We are pleased to report on the recently completed NZ Open Championship which has been considered by many as one of the best events in recent history. 6
The NZ Open Championship has been a drain on New Zealand Golf finances for a great number of years however after a great deal of debate and a significant amount of work, the Board of New Zealand Golf established a new agreement which sees the NZ Open now licensed to Michael Hill Tournaments Limited. A key feature of this agreement sees the financial risk and operational workload is now removed from the New Zealand Golf business. This pleasingly allows us to focus on our core operations of growing and supporting the game and grass roots level. The 2014 tournament returned to Queenstown and has been established as the world s most unique Open Championship, played with a concurrent Pro Am format and over two fantastic venues (The Hills and Millbrook). In advance of the event, for the first time in a number of years we were pleased to bring pre qualifying events to Royal Auckland, Paraparaumu Beach, Christchurch and Chisholm Park golf courses with final stage qualifying held at Cromwell and Omaha Beach golf clubs. As part of our licence agreement, New Zealand Golf retains a position on the organising committee and oversight on key decisions such as tournament sanction partners and the field structure. From a logistical and operational perspective, the event provided sound challenges for the organising team but we couldn t be more pleased with how the event turned out. There were lots of learnings and insights gained but in general the event has been considered an overwhelming success. The organising Chairman John Hart and Tournament Director Michael Glading each did an outstanding job and we are very grateful to have such competent and well respected people working with us on this important event. Around 18,000 visitors attended the tournament over the four days; however numbers could have been better if it were not for the brutal weather on Friday with snow on the mountain surrounding Queenstown. As well as visitors enjoying the golf, an estimated 2000 strong crowd enjoyed the Open Sounds concert presented by Amisfield on Saturday night, featuring up and coming young local singer Holly Arrowsmith and Anika Moa. While the 2013 event has been successful, priority focus areas are already established for future events including securing live television coverage and increasing the leverage activity that benefits the game of golf in Otago and wider regions. Celebrate the Success of 2013 Supreme Halberg Winner Lydia Ko Teenage golfing sensation Lydia Ko recently made history when she became the first golfer to win both the Halberg Sportswoman of the Year Award and the Supreme Award. The World No.4 also became the youngest ever winner at the Halberg Awards at New Zealand sport s night of glitz and glamour that dates back to What a wonderful achievement this was. To celebrate Lydia s stunning success, you can secure your piece of New Zealand golfing history with this exclusive piece of memorabilia. In February 2013 at the Clearwater Golf Club, World No. 1 Amateur Lydia Ko became the first New Zealander to win the New Zealand Women's Open and the youngest winner in Ladies European Tour history. To commemorate this wonderful moment in history, New Zealand Golf has created a special piece of memorabilia. There have been only 50 pieces produced; each of which is personally signed by Lydia Ko and available for $400 each. 7
