Is Your Club Prepared For The New Health And Safety at Work Act? The majority of the first phase of regulations to support the new Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA) have been now been finalised and will come into force on 4 April 2016, along with the Act. The regulations supported with information and guidance from WorkSafe New Zealand are intended to support businesses (particularly small businesses) to understand what they need to do to comply with the general duties of the Act. The detailed regulations are now available on the Legislation website What Your Club Can Do: 1) Read the Sport New Zealand Health and Safety Reform document. %20Reforms.pdf This will outline the changes to the legislation clearly for your club. 2) Sign up for updates with Work Safe NZ. This will allow your club to be continually up to date with the requirements of Health and Safety as they happen. 3) Where possible seek third party, professional advice. is one example. New Zealand Golf have run a pilot of the cloud based software with 4 Clubs and had pleasing results. Safety Seek are currently working with a number of Golf Clubs already and understand the market. 4) Collect and employ the relevant resource. Sport NZ have some fantastic H&S resources. sport/guides/health and safety for clubs This documentation covers essential requirements for your Club such as the following; Appointing a Health and Safety Co ordinator Health and Safety Policy (Click Here) health safety manual.doc Hazard Identification Register (Click Here) Register.doc Hazard Notification Checklist (Click Here) Notification Checklist.doc Accident recording, reporting and investigating (Click Here) Accident Reporting Form Register.doc First aid register (Click Here) Aid Register.doc Health and Safety contact information (Click Here) and Safety Contacts and Information.doc 5) Train your employees and volunteers. 2
Sport New Zealand have a free online course for all paid employees or volunteers to that outlines their rights and requirements under the new Health and Safety legislation. It is our suggestion that all volunteers or paid workers at the club do this course. Any further queries your Club may have can potentially be answered here regulations Alternatively, please feel free to contact NZ Golf Community Golf Team for further information. Handicapping Update We continue to liaise with the USGA on two fronts. The first is to stay informed and contribute where possible to the thinking surrounding a world handicap system. The second is to look at how our current system could be changed to better suit our playing environment. Last year we received regular feedback relating to the slow movement of handicaps for those that are 9 hole members. The life of a tournament score was also a popular topic. We are making progress in regard to each of these with DotGolf looking at a change in calculation to the best five of ten 18 hole scores for the 9 hole member. We will also reduce the life of a tournament score from 12 to 6 months. The timeframe for implementation is midwinter. We introduced three changes last year. Golf Club s now have the ability to modify a members handicap if the handicap committee agree that the formula is not fairly representing the players current ability. There are 46 players currently with a modified handicap with most of them adjusted up. Our members can now travel abroad, play a USGA rated golf course, and bring their score card home to be entered for handicap purposes. The number of scores entered aren t significant at the moment and we need to take steps to make all our members aware that this is now possible. The final change was to provide clubs with the ability to identify professional golfers who enter scores for a handicap. This is illustrated by a P following their handicap index. For any handicap information firstly refer to where we keep up to date news. New Zealand Golf Member Benefits With a wide range of partners on board with us here at New Zealand Golf we have managed to secure a number of benefits which are available to members, and in some cases, everyone in the golfing community. More details are available when logged into in the My Golf section of golf.co.nz Lydia Ko Wins on the LPGA Tour World number one Lydia Ko has held off a late charge from world number two Inbee Park during the final round of the Kia Classic to win her first LPGA event of the 2016 season. The 4 shot victory was the 11th of Ko s young yet very fruitful career, including her two wins as an amateur. Ko has now won five times when she slept on a 54 hole lead and continues the dominant start to her career in just her third year on tour. Click Here for full details. BMW ISPS Handa NZ Open Championship Australian Matthew Griffin claimed the BMW ISPS HANDA New Zealand Open with a clutch birdie on the final hole of the tournament. 4
Starting the day two shots behind Japan's Hideto Tanihara, Griffin opened his final round by eagling the first. With his nerves settled Griffin went head to head with Tanihara all day but found himself one behind his competitor with three holes to play. A clutch birdie at the last, where Tanihara made bogey, saw Griffin claim the title and his sixth win as a professional. Griffin fired 5 under 67 in the final round to post a winning total of 20 under 267 in front of his parents who had travelled overseas to watch him play for the first time. Leading New Zealander was Mike Hendry who raced up the leaderboard on Sunday to claim a share of 3 rd place, meaning the long wait for the first New Zealand winner of our national championship since Mahal Pearce at Royal Auckland in 2003 will continue. Click Here for full details. Hendry and Cassidy Take Out The Lawnmaster Classic Michael Hendry and Chantelle Cassidy took out the 2016 Lawnmaster Classic played at the Manawatu Golf Club earlier this month. The win for Hendry saw him become the player with the most wins on the Jennian Homes Charles Tour. Hendry jumps ahead of veteran Doug Holloway. It s immensely satisfying, I want to be regarded as one of New Zealand s best when I hang up my boots, said Hendry. His sixth title didn t come easy with Josh Geary consistently nipping at his heals in a real dog fight all week long. After 22 holes of frustrating even par golf, Hendry finally got a roll on with four birdies in five holes to close out the front nine. In the women s field Chantelle Cassidy completed her second Jennian Homes Charles Tour victory in a row after holding off nearest rival Amelia Garvey in clinical fashion. Trailing the Cassidy by one shot overnight, Garvey struck early to put pressure on, but Cassidy then put together a near perfect final round, showing all how to hold onto a lead with professionalism. Click Here for more details. Toomey Wins NZ Men s Stroke Play Championship 5
n a dramatic two hole playoff Waikato s Luke Toomey stole the New Zealand Men s Stroke Play Championship from under Jono Cane s nose to hold aloft the St Andrews Salver once again. Toomey was sitting comfortably in the clubhouse not expecting to dust off the clubs again until Jono Cane couldn t quite seal the deal. Cane had a one shot lead with a hole to play but found the trees on the 18 th and made bogey, which forced the playoff. The first playoff hole saw both players missing very good birdie opportunities in front of a packed clubhouse. Returning to the 18th tee, Toomey had some frustration to get rid of and ripped his drive to the front of the green to have a chance for eagle. The eagle putt was left short but Toomey had no problems converting the birdie for his second win in New Zealand s most prestigious amateur stroke play event. Click Here for full details. Cassidy Win s NZ Women s Stroke Play Championship Chantelle Cassidy is now a multiple winner of the NZ Women s Stroke Play Championship after remaining calm under the pressure on the final day. It has been three years since her 2013 victory but it wasn t without a challenge as she won her second tournament in as many weeks. It feels really good to win it here at Christchurch Golf Club and win the battle against the Australian today, said Cassidy. The nerves weren t too bad, I knew I had a two shot lead coming down 18 and then hit a whopping drive down the middle, so took the two putt to win, so it was great! Click Here for full details. Boulcotts Farm Pair Claim New Zealand Women s Autumn Foursomes 6
Boulcott Farm members Janet Hunter and Jill Timmins claimed the 2016 New Zealand Women s Autumn Foursomes Championship at the Martinborough Golf Club this month In taking out the 80th title, Hunter and Timmins won their final 3 and 1 over the formidable Waikato pair, Ro Thomas and Liz Purcell (Hamilton GC). Earlier in the day they had beaten Vicki Puia Clark and Deb Small (Pongoroa) in the semi finals 3 and 2. Thomas and Purcell had won their semi final, 2 and 1 over Otaki members Penny Bertelsen and Nancy Andrews. The 80th championship at the Martinborough Golf Club, presented a very dry hard course, but with soft greens. Playing conditions in the final gave all players the toughest challenge, out of the three days play, with rainsqualls and high winds affecting all morning matches. After six unbeaten matches, Hunter and Timmins held the trophy aloft. Click Here for full details. Social Media Update It is no secret social media has become a powerhouse in the media industry and is now a great tool for marketing and reach for a range of different audiences. As you may have noticed, we have recently adopted a strategy that increases the use of video content via New Zealand Golf s social media platforms. This strategy is proving to have a much larger impact on our social media goals of increased reach, engagement and likes, over traditional posts such as photos and articles. With social stats, we are able to record the reach of all our content and mould future content on what is proving to be successful. Fronted by NZG Media Manager George Harper Jnr, the videos are providing a different angle on all golf updates to wrap things up for the viewer in under 90 seconds, involving all the required information and more importantly, with ease. Below is an example of the information we have access to and how many people are viewing New Zealand Golf s videos. These particular videos have both reached nearly 30,000 people, many of which will be new viewers and now new followers. 7
The day three wrap of the NZ Open took sports broadcasting to the next level, being at the top of the AJ Hackett Bungy, topped off with a horrible attempt of a swan dive. This is an example of the unique opportunities to cover golf in New Zealand featuring our great tourism attractions. The video was then shared by AJ Hackett Bungy which has over 35,000 followers, instantly creating more reach and followers for New Zealand Golf. For our traditional golf audience, this is a little different but hopefully exciting as we start producing more content to gain traction and a wider audience getting behind the game we love. #LOVEGolf Three reasons Your Club Needs liteclub Three reasons why your Club needs to call liteclub now: 1) It will save your club money. 2) Someone else does all of the work. 3) It is free. 8

We want the case studies to be informative and useful each month and as such we will only produce and share case studies with quality information. To enter your Success Story as a Case Study please contact: Carl Fenton P: E: carl@nzgolf.org.nz To view all previous New Zealand Golf case studies (over 45), please visit Are you wanting to help someone who is starting out at Golf? Become a PGA Foundation Coach now It could be your neighbour, close friend, grandchild, son or daughter. The new Foundation Coach Modules have be designed to help you learn the very basics of coaching. You don t need to be a great player yourself you just need the enthusiasm and desire to help others who are starting out at this great game of ours. 10
Foundation Coach comprises three online modules (plus a short introductory module), each of which is interactive and where you have the opportunity to grow your understanding of coaching and player development. These modules are designed to give you the introductory coaching skills and tools to support new golfers as they try the game of golf for the very first time. PGA Coach Live is a joint initiative of New Zealand Golf and PGA of New Zealand. The objective of the Foundation Coach programme is twofold. While this may be the beginning of a life time in coaching for some, for others it will be the chance to learn just enough coaching skills to provide a level of support to help those people who thinking about playing golf. This programme is not a replacement for long term coaching programmes. It is in fact deigned to bridge the gap for those people you haven t yet begun a coaching programme with a certified PGA Coach but are wanting to dip their toes in and needs some initial support to do so. A Foundation Coach can play a role here, they can support the first touch for a golfer as they try the sport for the very first time, providing a safe and fun environment before passing the new golfer on to participate in a formal coaching programme. And hey, maybe even your own game will improve! The Foundation Coach programme is valued at $19.95, but as an introductory offer to the members of New Zealand Golf Clubs the cost is only $9.95, and all you need to do is: 1. Go to 2. Click on Register 3. Enter your details, and for the Join Code enter COACH 4. You will then use your credit card to pay the $9.95 and begin your coaching journey!
