This communication supplements our regular communication channels and provides a personal update on a monthly basis from New Zealand Golf to our key partners in the golf industry. Please feel free to pass this to anyone at your club or District Association who you think may wish to read this update. As always, our activity this month has been guided by our Strategic Plan which defines our two core objectives as Growing the Game and Supporting the Game. In this update: Rio Olympic Games 2016 NZ Golf Conference Series Case Studies three new Hendry in Hot Form Club & member benefits GMA Conference New Zealand Referee at the Olympics Three reasons Your Club Needs liteclub National Group Buying Scheme Don t let your club be the one to miss out Become a PGA Foundation Coach Other communications from New Zealand Golf Happy golfing. 1

2 Rio Olympic Games There were many things to take out of golf s success at the Olympics but the main thing we will take home is a silver medal. Lydia Ko battled back from the trenches to win New Zealand s first ever golfing medal and with her usual class. After starting poorly Ko rocketed up the leaderboard with a sensational 65 which included a career first hole in one just to add to the good week. "To have my first hole in one at the Olympics is really cool. I don't think I'll ever be able to forget it, especially with it being a pretty tough hole. I'll take that one." This result for Ko ranks equally with any of her 14 LPGA titles and you could easily see the nineteen year olds emotion for the medal and once again proving why she is a great ambassador for our game. Danny Lee and Ryan Fox finished their Rio campaign on high notes as Lee shot a solid two under par 69 to finish 27th equal in what was an exciting and new week for the Kiwi number one. Fox also moved up the leaderboard in the final round shooting a three under 68 which placed him in a tie for 39th after four challenging rounds at the Olympic Golf Course. Lee sadly had a slip up in the third round which cost him any chance of making the podium, but finished strong and with a good gallery by his side, including world number one Lydia Ko. It's really hard to come back from a five over round. But having one positive round to finish gives me a lot of confidence, said Lee. For the game of golf generally, the Rio Olympics has been heralded as an unqualified success. Global viewership numbers were enormous and the feedback from players in Rio by far exceeded all expectations. It was also pleasing to see the world s leading male players who decided to skip the event come out in support of Olympic golf in the past week. Fronting up and admitting they got their decision wrong was a great positive move and sets the scene nicely for the Tokyo Olympics in Congratulations to Lydia, Danny and Ryan. You represented New Zealand with a huge amount of pride and class. The 2016 Conference Series is Coming The New Zealand Golf Conference Series represents a great opportunity for your club to link directly with NZ Golf and District Association representatives to learn, share best practice and be kept up to date with what is happening at a national level. 4 In order for New Zealand Golf to continue to produce quality case studies we are heavily reliant on proactive clubs submitting their examples. We want the case studies to be informative and useful each month and as such we will only produce and share case studies with quality information. To enter your Success Story as a Case Study please contact: Carl Fenton P: E: carl@nzgolf.org.nz To view all previous New Zealand Golf case studies (over 55), please visit Hendry in Hot Form Mike Hendry was back in action over in Japan last week and recorded a very impressive tied second finish at the RIZAP KBC Augusta, continuing his great form on the Japan Tour. With rounds of 67, 71, 71 and 69 he earns himself a handy payday of $97,718 NZD and also remains in the top 200 official world golf rankings. This also makes for a crazy sixth top ten finish in a row, showing why is still one of the country s best. His form of recent has been something special, so much so he nearly jumped Ryan Fox for Olympic selection back in July and he has obviously continued his successful run. The 36 year old moves into fifth place on the Japan Golf Tour Order of Merit and Hendry has now accumulated $596,000 in Japan this year. With four tournaments to come over September, starting with the Fujisankei Classic, New Zealand s golfing community will be keeping a close eye on Hendry as he looks to continue a great year of results. New Zealand Golf Club & Member Benefits With a wide range of partners on board at New Zealand Golf we have managed to secure a number of benefits which are available to your club as well as affiliated members. You will see attached 2 documents: 4

5 New Zealand Golf Club & Member Benefits this lists all benefits for your club as well as affiliated members. This can be shared internally and displayed on your staff s noticeboard. New Zealand Golf Members Benefits this is the customer facing document which lists all benefits that are available to New Zealand Golf Affiliated Members. We would ask that you please print this off and display it on your members noticeboards around your club. We are always working to increase the number of benefits available for our clubs and affiliated members and we will be updating both documents quarterly and advising everyone through this Partner Update. Alternatively, you will always be able to download the latest version from the Info for Clubs section of golf.co.nz. All of these partners support the golfing community so please help out by showing your support in return. If you have any questions or want to touch base with any of the New Zealand Golf Partners please don t hesitate to drop Nick Rowland a note on nick@nzgolf.org.nz. GMANZ Conference Congratulations to the Golf Managers Association of New Zealand for delivering the hugely successful GMANZ Conference earlier this week. Well over 100 golf administrators enjoyed a conference schedule packed with quality speakers who offered thought provoking challenges to our sector. The messages were clear and I m sure all attendees headed home last night inspired and with plenty of new ideas. New Zealand Golf is very deliberately both the major sponsor of the GMA conference and the principal supporter of the Golf Managers Association. We would like to acknowledge the national GMA for their work and their support of New Zealand Golf. While our organisations have been partners for a very long time, the current relationship is outstanding. Much of this is to do with the quality of the current people leading the GMA. The GMA has come a long way in the past two years and their current positioning as the leading provider of Golf Management education is the right way forward. This is an excellent way for the GMA to provide true leadership that really improves the golf management sector in New Zealand. To Warren Collet, Chris Davies and your team congratulations on the progress you are making and for your ongoing support of New Zealand Golf. New Zealand Golf s Dave Mangan at the Olympics 5

6 Earlier this month New Zealand Golf General Manager Dave Mangan experienced the highlight of his refereeing career, being invited to be part of the rules committee for the Women s Event at the 2016 Rio Olympics. While Mangan had a false start, being admitted to Rio Hospital with a sudden onset of bronchospasm forcing him to miss his round one refereeing assignment he did manage to get back to full health after a couple of days, refereeing the final three rounds. Mangan s highlights of the week included refereeing eventual bronze medallist Shanshan Feng in the third round as she shot a 68 to climb into contention and Russian golfer Maria Verchenova in the fourth round, being on hand to see her shoot a stunning course record 62 which included a hole in one on the 4 th hole. The International Golf Confederation (IGF) was responsible for delivering golf for Rio 2016 and brought in a team of around 30 officials for each event. These officials were from around the globe representing various organisations like the two major governing bodies the R&A and USGA, professional tours including the PGA Tour, European Tour, LPGA and Ladies European Tour as well as many golfing associations around the world, like New Zealand Golf. While there weren t too many difficult rulings during the week, the referees were kept busy with players finding the Olympic Courses unique wasteland areas as well as being confronted with the many television towers that were erected on the course to help with the fantastic pictures being broadcast around the world. Pace of play was also a major issue all week. With new audiences watching golf at the Olympics the need to show golf in a positive light and have players complete rounds in under five hours was paramount, resulting in a lot of groups on the clock throughout both weeks to achieve those goals. Getting the chance to referee at the Olympics and be part of an amazing week was a once in a lifetime experience and best of all, the return of golf into the Olympics was a stunning success, said Mangan. The buzz around the golf started with the men and how exciting and emotional that event was and continued with the Women. The week had a really different vibe to a normal golf event with the players striving so hard to not only win a medal for themselves but to do it for their countries. You could see that with Lydia, it meant so much to her and her family to win a medal for New Zealand. The scale of the Olympic Games is simply massive. It is such a huge sporting event and to have golf now an accepted part of the Olympics is brilliant. I m sure that all of the golfers will be looking forward to Tokyo now and really striving to be the next gold medallist. Three reasons Your Club Needs liteclub 6

Become a PGA Foundation Coach now It could be your neighbour, close friend, grandchild, son or daughter. The new Foundation Coach Modules have be designed to help you learn the very basics of coaching. You don t need to be a great player yourself you just need the enthusiasm and desire to help others who are starting out at this great game of ours. Foundation Coach comprises three online modules (plus a short introductory module), each of which is interactive and where you have the opportunity to grow your understanding of coaching and player development. These modules are designed to give you the introductory coaching skills and tools to support new golfers as they try the game of golf for the very first time. PGA Coach Live is a joint initiative of New Zealand Golf and PGA of New Zealand. The objective of the Foundation Coach programme is twofold. While this may be the beginning of a life time in coaching for some, for others it will be the chance to learn just enough coaching skills to provide a level of support to help those people who thinking about playing golf. This programme is not a replacement for long term coaching programmes. It is in fact deigned to bridge the gap for those people you haven t yet begun a coaching programme with a certified PGA Coach but are wanting to dip their toes in and needs some initial support to do so. A Foundation Coach can play a role here, they can support the first touch for a golfer as they try the sport for the very first time, providing a safe and fun environment before passing the new golfer on to participate in a formal coaching programme. And hey, maybe even your own game will improve! The Foundation Coach programme is valued at $19.95, but as an introductory offer to the members of New Zealand Golf Clubs the cost is only $9.95, and all you need to do is: 1. Go to 2. Click on Register 3. Enter your details, and for the Join Code enter COACH 4. You will then use your credit card to pay the $9.95 and begin your coaching journey!
