1 TOMI PRO MODEL PERSONAL MODEL System requirements Windows System Requirements To use your TOMI and its software, your system should have: A Microsoft Windows compatible PC with a Pentium IV processor (1.5 GHz or faster recommended). Microsoft Windows XP, Vista (with 2 GB RAM), Windows 7, or 10. For Windows 7, and 10, install the Vista camera drivers and complete the extra steps in page 8. CD-ROM drive for installing the TOMI software and camera drivers. Can be installed with a flash drive by transferring CD Rom files to the flash drive. One Free USB 2.0 connection. TOMI does not perform well with AMD processors TV tuner cards, and INTERNAL WEBCAMS will interfere with the camera recognition process and should be disabled. 3 1. INSTALLING THE CAMERA DRIVER AND THE TOMI SOFTWARE Do not connect the camera to your computer before installing the TOMI software. It is highly recommended that you disable the internal web cam if your computer has one. You can do this through CONTROL PANEL / DEVICE MANAGER. The web cam is usually located under IMAGING DEVICES. Find it in the list, right click on it and a dialogue box will come up with DISABLE on the list. Click on DISABLE. Close out of these steps then proceed to the next step If you are installing your TOMI on Windows 10, you must first disable DRIVER SIGNATURE ENFORCEMENT on your computer. To accomplish this, follow these steps. 1. Open SETTINGS and enter startup in the FIND A SETTING box. 2. Click on CHANGE ADVANCED STARTUP OPTIONS. 3. Click on RESTART NOW under ADVANCED STARTUP. 4. Click on TROUBLESHOOT. 5. Click on ADVANCED OPTIONS. 6. Click on STARTUP SETTINGS then click RESTART. 7. Enter the the number that corresponds with DISABLE DRIVER SIGNATURE ENFORCEMENT, (usually 7). 8. Your computer will reboot and will be ready for TOMI installation. Insert the TOMI CD in your CD drive. The automatic startup should bring up the following window. Click on Load Camera to install the camera driver. If the automatic startup does not bring this window up, open up My Computer and double click on your CD drive (you should see a drive named TOMI_122). Click on autorun.exe. 3

4 Choose the Operating System present on your computer. For Windows 7 and 10, choose Vista. Click Next. Check No, I ll restart my computer later and click finish. 4

5 Back to the first window, click on Load Software. Click Next. Review the license agreement, check I agree to the terms of this license agreement and click Next. 5

6 Enter the serial number provided to you on the sticker of the TOMI CD sleeve. Make sure to enter the letters all caps and include the hyphens in between each of the 3 sets of characters. Click Next. Enter your Name as well as a name for your Company and click Next. Click Next to keep the default folder location or choose another location on the C drive. 6

7 Check Make shortcuts available to all users if you do not wish to restrict the use of the TOMI software for a single user and click Next. Click Next to proceed with the installation. Click Finish. IT IS NOW TIME TO RESTART YOUR COMPUTER BEFORE PLUGGING IN THE TOMI CAMERA. CLICK ON START, SHUT DOWN AND RESTART YOU COMPUTER. Upon restart, let your computer finish its startup process and plug in the camera. If a message such as the following appear, Click on Continue Anyway. 7

8 Windows should automatically find the camera driver and display Your new hardware is installed and ready to use in a small information window at the bottom right corner of your desktop. Installation for XP and Vista systems is now complete. WINDOWS 7 and 10 Final Installation Steps After installing the Vista driver in Step 1 of Install process and completing step 2 of the software install, restart your computer before plugging in the camera. After reboot, plug in your TOMI camera and wait for the new hardware wizard recognition process to complete successfully. We recommend installing the camera in all available USB ports at this time. Open the AMCAP software and click Options followed by Video Capture Filter If at the bottom of AMCAP screen the Vimicro camera is not indicated, click on DEVICE and select the Vimicro camera. If the Vimicro camera is not on the list of selections, then the camera was not installed properly, or it is plugged into a USB port upon which it was not installed. Try another port. Make all settings exactly as in picture below and click save. Click OK an you may now open the TOMI software. 8

9 TOMI EQUIPMENT SETUP TOMI is highly recommended for indoor use. When outdoors, use this system in an area protected from UV light sources. Before setting up the TOMI hardware, the TOMI software must be installed first. NOTE : TOMI provides feedback both through sight and sound; make sure the sound of your computer is turned on to the proper level for your environment. 2. SETTING UP THE CAMERA 2.1. Plugging in the USB cable (USB 2.0) Plug the USB cable from the Camera into a free USB 2.0 port on the computer. Most USB ports on laptops and desktops are USB 2.0, check your pc owners manual for more details. If you plug the camera into a USB 1.0 slot, your pc will inform that it will work but you might have performance issues Checking that the camera is connected Turn the computer on and if the camera is connected correctly the green light will come on in the front of the camera. [This will occur even if the TOMI software has not been loaded.] Positioning the Camera Select a spot for ball placement (you should mark the ball placement). During measurement, the golfer should always putt from the same ball placement and the camera should be placed approximately 31 inches directly in front of this spot (please read 3.3 to learn how to use the TOMI interface to set up the putter at the optimal distance from the camera), as perpendicular as possible to the intended target line and on a level surface (see diagram at right). It is advisable to mark this spot as each putt must be made from the same place. The target should be no closer than 6 feet and no further than 12 feet from the spot. (Ten feet is the best distance for analysis of the golfer s tendencies.)

10 3. ATTACHING & SETTING UP THE CLIP (transmitter) 3.1. Turning the clip on Press the power button on the clip and make sure that the power indicator comes on. Once the power button has been pushed, it stays on for five minutes before cycling off. At that point, you can press the power button to turn the clip back on. Note: Make sure the power light does not cycle off during usage. Do not move the clip on the putter shaft. If movement occurs, stop taking strokes and re-calibrate the unit. Battery Life The TOMI Clip will perform optimally for 2 hours (24 cycles) with (AAA) Alkaline batteries and 4 hours (48 cycles) with Lithium batteries. We recommend purchasing a set of 4 rechargeable batteries (Nimh) with a charger. Rechargeable batteries will perform optimally for 2 hours (24 cycles). Replacing the batteries To replace the batteries, slide the cover open on the upper back side of the clip. Gently slide out the old batteries and replace with the new ones making sure to have the + sides of each batteries facing towards the opening Placing the clip on the shaft Place the clip on the shaft with its base approximately 10 inches from the ground. The correct orientation of the clip is when the power button is below the side arms of the clip Securing the clip in place Use the two O-rings to secure the clip in place on your putter Adjusting the clip Adjust the clip by rotating it clockwise or counterclockwise until you are satisfied that the face of the clip is as square as possible to the putter head Removing the clip Insert your index finger between the O-ring and the shaft of the putter. Gently snap the O-ring off of the clip being careful not to use the clip s arms for leverage. 10

11 4. OPTIMIZING THE POSITION OF THE CAMERA IN RELATION TO THE CLIP 4.1. Opening the TOMI software Double-click on the TOMI icon located on your desktop or click on Start, All Programs, TOMI Powering the clip Press the power button on the clip and make sure that the power indicator comes on. The power button is at the front side and below the side arms of the clip when the clip is placed correctly on the putter Getting the optimal distance between the camera and the clip Get a golfer to take his/her address position facing the camera with the putter head approximately 3 feet from the base of the camera. When the TOMI interface comes up, make sure that the distance displayed in the rectangular window at the top of the screen is between 32 to 37 inches. If you do not wish to change the ball position, move the camera back until the distance displayed in the TOMI interface is optimal at 34 inches (approximately 1 meter). 34 inches is the optimal distance between the ball placement location. It is highly recommended to mark the ball placement location for improved results. 11

12 4.4. Centering the clip in the field of vision of the camera Click the video button and check to make sure the four LED s are seen on a black background. You should see FOUR white dots on the screen. Center the cross formed by the four LED s horizontally with the help of the notches on the side of the screen. The vertical position is not important as long as it at least above the center line. Centering the clip horizontally is important to capture the whole backstroke and follow through. For golfers who have a short backstroke and long follow through, see below. Note: Take a few practice swings to make sure the camera is picking up the complete swing. Centering the clip horizontally: To center the clip horizontally, move the camera right or left in relation to the ball position, but do not change the distance from the camera to the clip. Make sure no extraneous lights are in the field of vision of the camera: If there are more than 4 white dots on the screen, it means you have an extraneous light source that is causing interference. In that case you will have to reposition the set up to exclude the extraneous light Zeroing the alignment Adjust the camera by rotating it clockwise or counter clockwise until the alignment reading on the screen is approximately Note: Do not move the camera closer to or further away from the ball spot. Reconfirm centering of the 4 spots from the clip on the video screen and adjust the camera if necessary. When you are sure all is aligned, close the video screen by clicking on the X in the top right hand corner of the Video screen.

13 5. SETTING UP A NEW GOLFER IN THE DATABASE Set up a new user by clicking SETUP, then click New. The system will ask if you care to create a new user. Click on Yes and enter the information of the new user. Click on Create and the new user name will be displayed in the database window. You do not need to fill in all the information, only the name (last name first best for searching) and How are you going to play golf today : right vs. left. Selecting left handed as the answer will display the graphs for left handed reading. 6. CALIBRATION AND STROKES CAPTURE 6.1. Principles of the calibration procedure Before each set of strokes (5 per SET, up to ten sets in a row can be captured with the same calibration), TOMI can be calibrated in two ways: Manual calibration (LASER): Using a laser placed behind the ball position and pointing directly at the hole, place the clubface so as to have it exactly square to the laser line. The results of the measurements will then be related to the actual target line. Laser calibration method After the calibration process is completed TOMI will display the shaft angle and lie as zero. 13

14 6.2. Calibration and stroke capture procedures Naming a set of strokes Click start in the TOMI interface and the title window will come up. Insert any description such as Ping Anser, Claw Grip, or Long Putter in the first text box. This description will then appear (at the end of the strokes capture) next to the time stamp in the database window of the TOMI interface. Choosing the amount of time desired for calibration: The second box has a drop down menu to select the amount of time preferred to calibrate the system. Select the amount of time you prefer and click OK. Note: Selecting zero will calibrate the system instantly. The golfer should be ready to strike a putt under this condition. Choose the number of sets you would like to capture without interruption (up to 10). Capturing a set of strokes (press OK): The calibration count down begins. You now have the amount of time you selected to get the putter head aimed at the target using a laser. At the end of the countdown, you will hear a bell sound, the putter must then be held firmly in place for one second at which point you will hear a double bell sound. TOMI will now consider the position the putter is in as the calibrated position. If the putter stays in the calibrated position after the double bell sound is heard, TOMI will play a camera shutter sound letting you know that it is waiting for the start of the first swing. However, after the double bell sound is heard, the golfer could also move the putter away from the calibrated position to execute a few practice strokes and TOMI would not measure anything. Once the double bell sound is heard and until five strokes are captured, TOMI waits for the putter to come back within a cubic inch of the calibrated position. Once the putter is back in the calibration position, TOMI considers it in the address position and plays the camera shutter sound signaling it is waiting for the next swing to start. So as to have accurate alignment at address measurements, slide the putter in towards the camera when coming back to the calibrated position for your next stroke. After all 5 strokes have been captured, review the data with the golfer. See chapter 7 for interpretation of the measurements. 14

15 7. PRINTING REPORTS 7.1. Single report: Click on PRINT and the Print report box will come up. Select the set of strokes you would like to print out from the database and click Print Comparison report: Click on PRINT and the Print report box will come up. Select the set of strokes you would like to compare from the database and click Print. We have created an average tour player stroke (Tour_Player_A) which is always a good selection for comparisons. You could also select a before lesson set and an after lesson set to show improvements achieved by your student.. To reports we recommend using any print to software available on the market. 15

16 8. ANALYSIS You can always double-click on any of the 8 parameter screens to zoom in on them. Once in the zoom view, close the window to get back to the normal view of the 8 parameters. This analysis is under the assumption that the putt is a perfectly straight ten foot putt. (No break) The numbers at the bottom of each screen are the averages of each parameter Alignment at Address: When the system is calibrated before the first stroke, zero becomes the intended target line. The meaning of a positive value In any given stroke, a positive value displayed on the TOMI interface infers that the golfer was aiming right of the intended target line. (same for left handed) The meaning of a negative value In any given stroke, a negative value displayed on the TOMI interface infers that the golfer was aiming left of the intended target line. (same for left handed) The golfer s goal is to execute five strokes in a row with an alignment at address as close as possible to zero, the intended target line Alignment at Impact: The golfer s goal is to execute five strokes in a row with an alignment at impact as close as possible to zero, the intended target line Path at Impact: The impact zone is defined as 4 inches before and 4 inches after impact. The path at impact refers to the direction in which the putter head is traveling through the impact zone. Just like the alignment at address and the alignment at impact, the values in the TOMI interface for the path at impact are directly related to the calibrated target line. The meaning of a positive value: A positive value infers that, in the impact zone, the putter head traveled across the line from inside the line to out of the line. (Opposite for left handed) The meaning of a negative value: A negative value infers that the path of the putter at impact is outside to in. (Opposite for left handed) 16

17 The golfer s goal is to have a stroke path at impact as close as possible to 0 degrees, the intended target line Stroke Path and Rotation: Stroke Path The top view of the stroke path is important to determine whether the golfer brings the putter back to impact on the same path than on the backstroke and to see the ratio of backstroke length to forward stroke length. In order to respect the laws of the pendulum, impact should occur as close as possible to the center of the motion where the putter head is traveling at its top speed. Rotation Just like the alignment at address and the alignment at impact, the values in the TOMI interface for the rotation of the putter head are directly related to the calibrated target line. The tour average of the total rotation during the stroke is 11 degrees for a ten foot putt. i. The rotation at the end of the back stroke (displayed on the right side for each stroke) should be between 4 to 6 degrees, depending on the target distance. ( In left handed display, the back stroke rotation stays on the right side and should be between -4 to -6 degrees.) ii. The rotation at the end of the forward stroke (displayed on the left side for each stroke) should be between - 4 to 6 degrees depending on the target distance. ( In left handed display, the forward stroke rotation stays on the left side and should be between 4 to 6 degrees.) 8.5. Shaft Angle: A value of zero in shaft angle infers that the shaft is vertical in relation to the ground. The meaning of a positive value: A positive value infers that loft was added to the putter. The meaning of a negative value: A negative value infers that loft was taken away from the putter. The golfer s goal should be to consistently add 1.5 degrees of loft at impact in relation to their address position. 17

18 8.6. Impact Spot: The impact spot is given in relation to each address position and given that the ball was addressed in the center of the clubface it should consistently be struck in the center of the clubface from stroke to stroke. If the impact spot is on the toe, the resulting putt will be short and right. If the impact spot is on the heel, the resulting putt will be short and left. The system will display the results accordingly. A putt is deemed struck in the center of the clubface if the impact spot occurred within a half of an inch on either side of the sweet spot of the putter face Speed at Impact: Speed must be consistent from stroke to stroke no matter what the number is. The number will always differ with the different green/carpet speed Stroke Tempo: The golfer should be consistent on all parameters in the following way: Total time from swing start to impact: The bottom number values represent the total time taken to strike the ball from the start of the putt to impact on the ball. Time from swing start to end of backstroke: The bottom value in each column (green) represents the time taken to complete the backstroke. Time from end of backstroke to impact: The top value in each column (yellow) represents the time taken to complete the forward stroke up to the time of impact of the ball. Tempo: The top value, Tempo, represents the ratio of backstroke time against forward stroke time. The tour average of the ratio of backstroke time to forward stroke time is 2. The golfer s goal is to be twice as fast on the forward stroke to impact as the time taken on the backstroke. 18

19 9. TROUBLESHOOTING TOMI 9.1. Hardware troubleshoot The information bar displays No camera. The Camera is not communicating with the computer. Make sure that the USB cable is correctly plugged in the computer. Make sure that the USB cable is correctly plugged in the camera. Make sure that the LED light comes on in front of the camera. The information bar displays No club o Batteries are too weak. The number of cycles for optimal performance depends on the quality of the batteries: o The clip is damaged. The clip could be damaged, open the video and make sure that FOUR LED s are displayed on a black background. If you see less than four LED s and you are sure the batteries are still good, call customer service. o Extraneous light sources. Open the video to make sure that the FOUR LED s are displayed on a BLACK background. If there is anything else you have an extraneous light source in the field of vision of the camera. If there are more than 12 extraneous light sources (usually occurs in an outdoor environment) this will prevent TOMI from recognizing the presence of the clip. o The clip is outside the field of vision of the camera. Review steps 3, 4, 5 of Chapter 4. The information bar displays > 42 The ball position is too far from the camera, review steps 3, 4, and 5 of Chapter 4. The information bar displays < 30 The ball position is too close to the camera, review steps 3, 4, 5 of Chapter 4. 19

20 TOMI was calibrated correctly but no sounds occur during measurement Make sure that the golfer places the club back to the original calibrated position. The position of the putter should be within one cubic inch of the calibrated position for TOMI to recognize a valid address position and start the swing recognition process TOMI is set up correctly but does not capture strokes If the requirements in steps 3, 4, 5 of Chapter 4 are met and TOMI is not capturing strokes, it might be related to the characteristics of the putting stroke of the golfer being measured. Golfer s putting stroke is too long. Pull up the video and ask the golfer to execute a stroke, if the LED s disappear from the screen on either side of the video window, the putting stroke executed is too long in length. Golfer s putting stroke is too short. The putting stroke of a golfer can also be too short. If the backstroke is less than 2 inches long TOMI will not be able to capture the full stroke consistently. Golfer s backstroke is too slow. TOMI measures consistently and accurately in a specific time window. From the start of the swing, the golfer should take no less than.4 seconds and no more than 1.5 seconds to strike the ball. Outside this window TOMI will not capture strokes consistently. Golfer s putting stroke has too much rotation. If the golfer rotates more than 20 degrees on either side of the stroke TOMI will not capture strokes consistently, and upon capturing such strokes, the quality of the readings might be affected TOMI captures strokes but the readings do not seem accurate Extraneous light source TOMI could still measure a stroke if there were less than twelve (and more than 3) light sources picked up by the camera, but the readings might be inaccurate. An example would be if a reflection was picked up in the background. Golfer s putting stroke has too much rotation. In those extreme cases where the golfer rotates more than 20 degrees on either the back or the forward stroke, the loft, impact spot, speed and stroke tempo accuracy might be effected. The lie is too upright Make sure that the lie of your putter at address does not exceed 80 degrees. The batteries are growing weak. Check the strength of the LED light on the face of the clip. A weak red glow will indicate that the batteries have lost their strength. Replace the batteries accordingly. Recheck the position of the clip on the putter shaft. Is it perfectly square to the face of the putter? Recheck the position of the camera in relation to the line of the putt. (see page 13) 20

21 10. Changing TOMI Settings Some of the graphic representations of stroke data on the TOMI system are magnified for clarity while the actual data numbers are exact. Specifically the graph lines in Alignment at Address, Alignment at Impact, Path at Impact and Shaft Angle, are all scaled up in order to differentiate between individual strokes. As it comes stock, the TOMI multiplies the angles in these graphic representations by approximately 5X. If you look in the upper left corner of these panels, you will see the number 8. What this means is that if an alignment line were to point directly at the corner it would indicate an 8 degree alignment, path or shaft angle, not the nearly 45 degree angle that is drawn on the graph. Some TOMI users would prefer to have less magnification of these measurements. This can be accomplished by getting into the program s configuration file. One must have Administrative access to the computer with full control to modify the configuration file. If you do not know how this is done, have an I.T. person do it for you. If you improperly change the configuration file, you may have to reload the TOMI software. (Not the Camera!). Step 1: Get into File Explorer. Step 2: Enter TOMIPCPro in the file search box. Step 3: A list of files will come up. Double click on the file that is in the Users directory. It will be of Type Configuration Settings. Do not change the file that is in the Program Files directory. Step 4. This file will come up on Notepad. Go down to General TOMI Settings, then to Angle Scaling. Change the angle scaling from 660 to 230. (This will change magnification to approximately 2X ). Step 5. Save the file. Step 6. Restart TOMI. The number in the corner should now read 23. If the Access Denied error comes up, then you do not have Administrator access to modify this file. To get this access do the following: 1. In File Explorer, find the TOMIPCpro.ini file and right click on it. Then click on Properties. 2. Click on the Security tab, then Advanced near the bottom. 3. Change the permissions for Administrators to Full Control. 4. Apply and Save 5. Now you should be able to make the changes as described above and save the file. 21
