ADVERTISEMENT Illegal Doping Meets Its Match Trainers Praise natural alternative By: Mark Hansen The pressure to win is so enormous that many horsemen resort to whatever it takes to get a piece of the purse or a decent sale even if it means putting their horses lives in mortal danger by doping them with illegal synthetic erythropoietin (EPO) drugs to boost endurance. Veterinarian Gary Smith said, It s a problem all over the industry. There is no way horses should be put on (synthetic) EPO. So how do racers win? How do you gain a competitive edge without harming your horses or risking your livelihood? The answer may be found in a safe all-natural horse supplement that supports natural EPO function. Why is EPO boosting so critical? Just like in people, a horse s muscles require oxygen for fuel. Red blood cells are the body s oxygen-carrying cells. A higher red blood cell count = more oxygen = more muscle energy. Elevated muscle energy helps the horse perform harder, faster and longer during endurance events. All horses naturally produce EPO in their kidneys to stimulate production of new red blood cells from bone marrow. In short, EPO is a natural blood builder. With EPO doping, trainers try to boost the EPO effect to get a winning performance every time. They use a synthetic EPO (recombinant human EPO), even though the side effects can harm the horse. That s one reason why it s illegal. Fortunately there s another option. EPO-Equine is a safe, highly effective natural dietary supplement scientifically engineered for performance horses. A Kentucky trainer who refused to give out his name, said, I don t want my competition to know about this. He found EPO-Equine to be so effective that he s dead set against disclosing who he is, who his horses are, or even where he trains and races. He first started ordering a single jar of EPO-Equine once a month. Now he s ordering several CASES each month. And he won t tell BRL exactly why. He said respectfully, Sorry no way. Bioengineers at U.S. based Biomedical Research Laboratories (BRL), first discovered a completely natural EPO-booster for human athletes (and it s working miracles for top athletes and amateurs around the world). Seeing these results, horse trainers contacted BRL and asked about using this natural formula for their animals. That s when the BRL team dug deeper and discovered a proprietary, horse-friendly strain of a common herb that promotes optimal blood-building results. EPO-Equine is based on the blood-boosting abilities of a certain strain of Echinacea that s astounding researchers and trainers alike. (It s not a strain you can find at the local health store.) Veterinarians at the Equine Research Centre in Ontario, Canada ran a double-blind trial investigating the blood building properties of the active ingredient in EPO-Equine in healthy horses. For 42 days, one group of horses was supplemented with the active ingredient in EPO-Equine and another group of horses was given a placebo. The supplement delivered significant blood building results, increasing red blood cell count and hemoglobin levels. Researchers also observed improved blood quality and increased oxygen transport in the supplemented horses. Improved blood levels leads to elevated exercise physiology and performance. The patent-pending formula in EPO-Equine contains a dozen different herbs, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory components combined to promote natural red blood cell production for remarkable speed, strength and stamina right out of the gate. Trainers find it easy to add just 1 scoop (3.2 grams) of EPO-Equine to the horse s daily feeding routine in the barn or on the road. Within a few weeks of daily use, you can expect to see increased red blood cell levels with no undesirable side effects. An increase in red blood cell levels can improve muscle performance, supercharge endurance, and enhance recovery after hard exercise. Nothing else is scientifically proven to deliver these benefits in a completely safe and natural formula. Compared to the cost of veterinarians, drugs, icing, tapping the knees, and putting the horse on Bute; or even the consequences of being banned for synthetic doping, EPO-Equine is very affordable at the low price of just $59.95 per jar. Or save $180 if you are ready to commit to a larger trial of 12-jar case for just $ with FREE shipping. EPO-Equine can be ordered at or , and comes with a 100% money-back satisfaction guarantee.

drf BREEdInG Sunday, July 28, 2013 PAGE 3 Lure lives on through Orpen JOHN P. SPARKMAN The list of candidates for the title of best American racehorse never to earn a championship can be as long as one s racing memory. The author s personal list will always start with Gallant Man, who split eight meetings with 1957 Horse of the Year Bold Ruler and beat 1958 Horse of the Year Round Table in their only three meetings but never won the right race to nail down a championship against that epochal crop of racehorses. Some stars of the past like Native Diver and Best Pal have been denied championships partly by geography, but the case for dual Breeders Cup Mile winner Lure is somewhat different. Lure s first Mile win in 1992 was something of a surprise at the end of an up-anddown 3-year-old season, but his second, his sixth win in eight starts at 4, was simply a case of bad timing. Kotashaan clinched Horse of the Year honors later that same day with a victory in the Breeders Cup Turf, and Lure was left without an Eclipse statuette again. Lure s luck in the breeding shed was even worse. Retired to his birthplace, Claiborne Farm, in 1995, he proved to be subfertile, and Claiborne was forced to cash in fertility insurance after one season at stud. Purchased by John Magnier s Coolmore Stud from the insurance company, Lure sired only 133 foals in nine crops. Naturally, breeders sent few good mares to Lure after that first season, but his Grade 1 winner England s Legend, from his first Coolmore season, and Group 1 winner Orpen, from his only Claiborne crop, showed just how tragic his subfertility was for the breeding industry. Bred and raced by Magnier, Orpen won the Group 1 Prix Morny in 1998 and has become an important international sire, most recently through the exploits of his 2-year-old daughter Vorda, who captured the Group 2 Prix Robert Papin on July 21 at Maisons-Laffitte in Paris. By Danzig out of Grade 1 winner Endear, an Alydar half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Tiller and two other stakes winners from an outstanding family, Lure won the first of his three starts at 2. Pointed toward the Kentucky Derby early at 3, he dead-heated for the win with Devil His Due in the Grade 2 Gotham Stakes but was not entered in the Derby after defeat in the Grade 2, 1 1/16-mile Lexington Stakes. Lure ran once more on dirt before trainer Shug McGaughey switched him to turf, where he immediately romped by 10 1/4 lengths in an allowance race at Belmont. Beaten in the Grade 3 Kelso Handicap on soft turf he never handled well, Lure got the firm course he needed at Gulfstream Park at the Breeders Cup. Blazing away on the front end, he kept right on going to the wire, setting a course and Breeders Cup record of 1:32.90 for the mile. At 4, Lure won six races at a mile to 1 1/8 miles but was second in both attempts at longer distances. His Breeders Cup Mile win at Santa Anita was another tour de Michael J. Marten Lure, who won the Breeders Cup Mile for the second straight year in 1993, is part of this year s Racing Hall of Fame class. force, as he led all the way to win by 2 1/4 lengths in 1: Lure was almost as good at 5 until his final race, winning three graded stakes, including the 1 3/16-mile, Grade 1 Caesars International, and finishing second in three others before failing to fire as the 9-10 favorite for a third Breeders Cup Mile win, finishing ninth. Orpen showed flashes of Lure s brilliance at 2, winning his first start at Goodwood, then traveling to France for a comfortable victory in the Morny, running the 1,200 meters (5.96 furlongs) in a snappy 1: At 3, however, Orpen showed signs of temperament. He refused to settle when favored in England s 2000 Guineas but showed at least a modicum of his ability in the Irish equivalent, finishing third behind stablemate Saffron Walden. After another disappointing display at Royal Ascot, trainer Aidan O Brien tried Orpen in blinkers for the Prix Maurice de Gheest but to no avail. Orpen appeared to have fallen out of love with racing. Few horses could have boasted a better stallion s pedigree than Orpen when he went to stud at Coolmore in His older half-brother Jules, by Forty Niner, had won the Grade 3 Nashua Stakes and later became a periodically successful sire in Florida and Brazil. Orpen has developed into yet another leading sire from the fabulous family descending from his fourth dam, Almahmoud, by Mahmoud. Shuttling between various locations in the Southern Hemisphere and Europe, Orpen has sired 76 stakes winners from 1,838 foals ages 3 and up (4.1 percent), which is not an outstanding strike rate. He has been a star in Argentina, however, where he led the sire list in Orpen s best son, Lingote de Oro (out of Laika, by Old Trieste), earned Argentine horse of the year honors in 2011 after winning the Argentine Breeders Cup Classic equivalent, the Group 1 Estrellas Classic. Orpen sired two more Argentine champions the following year in La Laguna Azul (La Laguna Verde, by Candy Stripes) and Dona Ley (Dona Polenta, by Candy Stripes) and is responsible for the Argentine-bred South African champion 2-year-old male Rocks Off (Lava Gold, by Java Gold). lure 89 OrPen Bay Horse Foaled May 20, 1996 Bonita Francita 87 danzig 77 Endear 82 devil s Bag 81 Raise the Standard 78 Orpen has not been quite as successful in other venues, but his Australianbred star War Artist (Royal Solitaire, by Brocco) won group races in South Africa, France, Germany, and Dubai, and he has sired four highweights in Italy, where he has spent his European seasons in recent years. Vorda is the second foal out of Velda, by Observatory, a winning daughter of Viavigoni, by Mark of Esteem. Viavigoni produced nothing of note but was a halfsister to Italian Group 3 winner Verardi, by Mill Reef. Vorda s third dam, Val d Erica, by Ashmore, was a much better filly, winning both the Group 1 Italian Oaks and the Italian 1000 Guineas and running second in the Group 1 French Oaks. The champion filly of her generation in Italy, Val d Erica descends from the great family founded by her seventh dam, Pretty Polly, still widely considered the best filly ever to race in England. Though she is unbeaten in her two starts to date, Vorda is unlikely to match the record of Pretty Polly, who won 22 of 24 starts from and founded a family that includes such turf luminaries as Brigadier Gerard, Donatello, Nearctic, Luthier, St. Paddy, Northern Taste, and, more recently, 2010 Breeders Cup Ladies Classic winner Unrivaled Belle, 2012 Travers winner Alpha, and 2013 French classic winner Style Vendome. Lure s record of 11 wins and six seconds from 18 starts on turf is far better than that of many grass champions, and he will be rewarded with induction into the Racing Hall of Fame on Aug. 9 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. His fertility issues blighted an otherwise-promising stud career, but his best son, Orpen, has ensured that Lure s genetic legacy will live on for a few more generations.

drf BREEdInG Sunday, July 28, 2013 PAGE 5 hot sire: majestic warrior a star for first-crop sire By Patrick reed Princess of Sylmar s 38-1 win over a quality field of 3-year-old fillies in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks on May 3 sent many handicappers and fans back to the Daily Racing Form and pedigree books to more closely examine her past performances and lineage. The win also generated a lot of anticipation for the next start for Ed Stanco s homebred, since it would give the filly a chance to prove that her upset win at Churchill Downs was not a fluke. On July 20, after a 2 1/2-month rest, Princess of Sylmar returned in the 1 1/8-mile Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga and impressively took her second consecutive Grade 1 race, overpowering four opponents with a strong early-stretch move under Javier Castellano to record a widening six-length victory. The filly has won six of eight career starts and emerged as the clear leader of her division. Trainer Todd Pletcher said after the CCA Oaks that Princess of Sylmar would be pointed to the 1 1/4-mile, Grade 1 Alabama Stakes at the Spa on Aug. 17. Based on the way she handled 1 1/8 miles in both the Kentucky Oaks and the CCA Oaks, the added furlong in the Alabama would appear to be well within her scope. Stanco, who became involved in the Thoroughbred sport as an owner and breeder more than a decade ago and with partners campaigned multiple Grade 2 winner Capeside Lady, initially planned to breed his stakes-placed Catienus mare Storm Dixie to Grand Slam, a successful sire at Coolmore Stud s Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky. Grand Slam was reported to have suffered a minor injury the day before the scheduled breeding date, however, and Ashford s first-year sire Majestic Warrior became the choice instead. As a racehorse, Majestic Warrior excelled right off the bat for the late owner and breeder and New York Yankees kingpin George Steinbrenner, who operated the Florida-based Kinsman Stable. Majestic Warrior, a son of A.P. Indy, emerged in the competitive 2-year-old world of Saratoga in 2007 to win his 6 1/2-furlong debut by 3 1/2 lengths, and in his subsequent start, he rallied to take the seven-furlong, Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes by 2 1/4 lengths. Majestic Warrior went postward in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park that fall as the favorite but finished a well-beaten sixth, and things never were the same for him. Trainer Bill Mott kept Majestic Warrior out of the Breeders Cup Juvenile after finding a separation in the colt s left front hoof wall and gave him a long break before bringing him back for a 3-year-old campaign. Majestic Warrior never was able to recapture his early form in 2008, finishing no better than fourth in his four starts, all stakes. The Coolmore-affiliated Michael Tabor, BarBara D. livingston Princess of Sylmar (left), under Javier Castellano, wins the Coaching Club American Oaks on July 20 for her second Grade 1 win. Derrick Smith, and Susan Magnier had bought an interest in the colt after his Hopeful win, and Majestic Warrior was retired to the breeding operation s Ashford Stud in the fall. Despite his abbreviated racing career, Majestic Warrior had shown enough talent to draw a lot of interest from breeders, aided by an excellent pedigree. By Horse of the Year and leading sire A.P. Majestic Warrior boasted a 3x4 cross to Secretariat, a 4x4 cross to Buckpasser, and a 4x5x5 cross to Bold Ruler in his pedigree. Although he never won beyond seven furlongs, his pedigree suggested he would be able to sire horses who could win at longer distances. Princess of Sylmar is one of 114 registered foals in Majestic Warrior s first Northern Hemisphere crop born in 2010 (he also shuttled to La Mission in Argentina for the breeding season). She easily is the best of that group to date, but Majestic Warrior also is the sire of Declan s Warrior, a dual stakes winner this year whose triumphs include the Grade 3 Bay Shore Stakes, and Japanese Group 3 winner Best Warrior. Majestic Warrior also has two other 2013 U.S. stakes winners from his first crop, Ante Up Annie and Rienzi, and another talented runner whose best may be yet to come in Majestic Hussar. That colt, a Joseph Witek homebred who tired to finish fourth in the 1 1/16-mile, Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes in February after leading through a sub-46-second half-mile, has resumed training for Eddie Kenneally in New York. Majestic Warrior finished 2012 ranked fourth on the freshman sire list by earnings but first by number of winners. With Princess of Sylmar leading the way, he now is second in progeny earnings behind Midnight Lute on the second-crop sire list through last Monday with more than $2.6 million. The young sire has been popular at yearling and juvenile auctions with progeny averages in the $50,000-to-$60,000 range for yearlings in 2012 and 2-year-olds sold at auction this year and was bred to 167 mares last year, sixth-most among North America-based stallions. Ashford Stud manager Dermot Ryan said earlier this year that he expected Majestic Warrior s courtesy of ashford StuD Majestic Warrior is second among North American second-crop sires with $2.63 million in progeny earnings through Monday. progeny to improve with age and distance and that is exactly what is happening. Princess of Sylmar s dam, Storm Dixie, won her debut at 1 1/16 miles on turf, and in 10 career starts, she placed in the Crockadore Stakes on turf at Belmont at the same distance. Golden Wave Band, Princess of Sylmar s second dam, was a three-time stakes winner in New Mexico. The Dixieland Band mare produced 2000 Dubai Duty Free winner Rhythm Band and the Grade 3-placed Musical. The aforementioned Spinning Round, Majestic Warrior s second dam, also is by Dixieland Band, giving Princess of Sylmar a 4x3 cross to the late Lane s End stallion, who was the leading broodmare sire of 2004.

drf BREEdInG Sunday, July 28, 2013 PAGE 9 Catching up with serena s song fire still BUrning Bright By nicole russo The fire that made Serena s Song one of the most remarkable racemares of her generation hasn t faded over the years. Her biggest idiosyncrasy is she s very protective of her foals when they re first born, said Craig Bandoroff, who, along with his wife, Holly, owns Denali Stud in Paris, Ky., where the Racing Hall of Fame member now calls home. You ve really got to give her a few days just to let them be by themselves. Obviously, we go in and do what we have to do, but she s very, very protective when they re first born, and then she settles down. That s the interesting quirk about Serena and, of course, other mares are that way. Way back when and I should have known better I was going into her stall, and I dropped a mint or something, and I bent to pick it up, and she came after me. I should have known better, I knew her well enough. Eclipse Award winner Serena s Song won 17 graded stakes races, including 11 Grade 1 events, and placed in another 14 while tackling males multiple times in top-level competition, including a victory in the 1995 Haskell Invitational. Boarded at Denali since the conclusion of her racing career, the Rahy mare, now 21, is in foal to Medaglia d Oro. She s doing great, Bandoroff said. She s aging well. She gets some pretty tender, loving care. We treat her accordingly. I mean, she doesn t quite carry the weight she used to carry, but she does well, and she s in foal. She s like every good racemare she s not a pussycat; she s not a pet, although she can be sweet. She s got a very sweet tooth for peppermints. That s the way you get to Serena s heart. [Trainer D.] Wayne Lukas trained her well on that, Bandoroff said with a laugh. She ll let you know when she s had enough, but she s good. You can do anything with her. She ll pin her ears and let you know, I ve had enough. She s a woman with her own mind. Serena s Song, bred in Kentucky by Dr. Howard Baker, was purchased for $150,000 by the late Robert Lewis and his wife, Beverly, at the 1993 Keeneland July yearling sale. She fell through the cracks, but I remember at the time Wayne sort of punched me and said, You just bought one of the most athletic yearlings I ve ever seen, and he was right, Bob Lewis Sara Fagan/Denali StuD Hall of Famer Serena s Song, seen at Denali Stud in April 2012, won 17 graded stakes and earned $3.28 million at the track. told the Los Angeles Times in He said he felt she was strong enough right then to run against the 2-year-olds... I tell people we ve been fortunate to have two sons and a daughter, but I almost feel as though we have two daughters when you count Serena s Song. We realize how fortunate we are to have her. She s the epitome of a racehorse. She just flows. It took Serena s Song three tries to win her maiden, but when she did, she did so in style, romping by 10 lengths at Hollywood Park. She would compete exclusively in graded stakes for the rest of her career, taking two Grade 1 events as a juvenile and finishing second by a head to Flanders in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies. Serena s Song began her sophomore campaign in 1995 with four straight victories, including a score in the Grade 2 Jim Beam, in which she trounced males Tejano Run and Mecke. Favored in the Kentucky Derby along with entrymate Timber Country, Serena s Song set swift early fractions but tired to finish 16th as another Lukas-trained horse, Thunder Gulch, took the roses. Wins in the Black-Eyed Susan and Mother Goose stakes and a second in the Coaching Club American Oaks sent Serena s Song to Monmouth Park and the Haskell, where, with Gary Stevens aboard, the filly delivered one of her best performances in outlasting Pyramid Peak by three-quarters of a length. Indy), for $1.5 million, and Serena s Tune for $1 million. Generally, when we ve taken them to auction, they re well received not just because of their pedigrees, but physically, Bandoroff said. Two daughters of Serena s Song are stakes producers in their own right, with their daughters appearing to be poised to carry the family s success into another generation. In a brief career as a broodmare, Serena s Tune, who died in 2006, produced Irish Group 3 winner Vocalized as well as the stakes winner Serena s Cat, who in turn produced recent Grade 2 winner Noble Tune. Sophisticat is the dam of French stakes winner Sefroua, who was Grade 3-placed in the United States, and the English Group 1-placed Pursuit of Glory. She also is the dam of the stakes producer Suppose. Four sons of Serena s Song Arbitrate, Grand Reward, Harlington, and Schramsberg also have embarked on stud careers. Not only has she [been successful as a broodmare], but there s a family being built around her, Bandoroff said of Serena s Song. That s more than you ever ask for. For her daughters [to continue the family], that s really something special, bloodline-wise.

drf BREEdInG Sunday, July 28, 2013 PAGE 11 Yearling insurance protects owners investments Fall-of-hammer coverage recommended for auction purchases By nicole russo Hope springs eternal in the Thoroughbred business particularly during yearling sales season, as potential owners arrive on the auction grounds with checkbooks at the ready, scrutinizing prospects in the hopes of spotting racing s next superstar. But hand-in-hand with the pursuit of reward comes risk, particularly with young horses constantly exposed to new environments and experiences. And thus, many owners seek out insurance to protect themselves and their new purchases. The purpose of buying insurance on Thoroughbreds is to protect your investment, said Anya Sheckley, who runs Hammertown Insurance out of Pine Plains, N.Y. Many people have experienced the unfortunate situation of buying a horse, often for a substantial amount of money, and then losing that horse to an unexpected injury or illness. Insurance pays you back for the value of the horse you have lost. Purchasing yearling insurance on a 12-month plan can prove economical during the first year of ownership. Rates for horses of racing age are more expensive. If a colt purchased at the Keeneland September yearling sale makes his first start in June of his 2-year-old season, his first three months as a racehorse still would be covered under his yearling rate. It would be wise to insure a yearling out of the sale because you re first going to be transferring the yearling to a training facility, said Joe Browne Nicholson, owner of Nicholson Insurance Agency in Lexington, Ky. [The policy] includes the transportation, the breaking of the yearling, and training as a 2-year-old. It s the most economical premium rate there is... The premium rate for a yearling is about two-thirds the rate of a racehorse. If you buy full mortality coverage on a yearling, possibly a racehorse, and that horse begins racing before September of 2014, then you re enjoying the benefits of the policy at a much-reduced rate. Owners who intend to buy at public auction may consider securing a fall of hammer policy before the sale that is, a policy that takes effect as soon as the hammer falls on a winning bid. Since your ownership in a yearling purchased at a yearling sale takes place at the fall of the hammer, coverage to protect your risk should take place then too, Sheckley said. For existing clients with active policies, the yearling purchases are usually automatically covered at the fall of the hammer. For new clients looking to purchase and insure yearlings, we recommend speaking to an agent prior to the sale to set up the fall-of-hammer coverage. It will not be necessary to reveal the details of the horses you intend to purchase. [Stating] that you intend to purchase horses at a particular sale and for a general range of value is usually enough information for an agent to assure a client that coverage will be in effect with the fall of the hammer. Nicholson also advises fall-of-hammer coverage, particularly considering the hectic environment of a sale. Definitely, that s the best way to do it, he said. It takes the element of question out of the process, so the buyer doesn t have to look around for me at the sale or call the office later. God forbid if something were to happen [to the horse] between the sale pavilion and the barn. Typical yearling insurance plans are full mortality policies, covering losses due to accidental injury, illness, or disease, although some owners opt for noncomprehensive coverage addressing specific risks, such as fire or transportation. Plans also may include coverage for colic surgery or other emergencies. The value of the horse for the purpose of the policy typically is based upon the sale price. Horses purchased at public auction are usually assigned a value of the purchase price or RNA price, Sheckley said. Horses purchased privately are generally insured for the sale price... It is always acceptable to insure for less than the full value of a horse but never acceptable to insure for more than the horse is worth... Not all policies are equal. In any insurance policy, it is important that the insurance company values the horses based on agreed value, not fair market value, Sheckley added. This means that the amount you will be paid in the event of a loss is the amount showing as the value on the declarations page. Additionally, it is important to be educated to any exclusions in the policy and any special requirements regarding vaccinations and care. The process of valuing a homebred is based upon different criteria. We use stud-fee multiples usually, two times the stud fee is a good rule of thumb, Nicholson said. It also depends upon the siblings. We could go higher [if siblings are racing well]. Maybe if the conformation is exceptional, we could go higher also. But two times the stud fee is a good rule of thumb. While a horse purchased at public sale will have already undergone an extensive veterinary analysis, an exam and additional health documentation typically are necessary when insuring a homebred or private purchase. For private purchases, health documentation will be necessary in order to bind coverage on the horse, Sheckley said. Depending on the value of the animal and prior history of injury or illness, either a veterinary certificate a standard insurance exam done by a veterinarian or a Declaration of Health a health statement provided by the owner, boarding farm, or trainer of the horse will be needed. Generally speaking, horses acquired at public auction will not need any additional health documentation. Ultimately, decisions on insurance coverage must be made by owners on a caseby-case basis, weighing the risks they are willing to take, the amount they intend to spend, and the potential losses they are able to absorb. Although most people insure for 100 percent of what they pay for the horse, that s not mandatory, Nicholson said. They could insure for half the value or three-quarters of the value if they wanted to save premium dollars. But at the same time, they would be taking that risk. A person should ask how they would feel, financially and emotionally, if something were to happen to that horse and that horse was not insured. Would they shrug it off, or would they be financially harmed beyond what they are willing to endure? It s a personal decision.
