3 Harness Racing at the Crookwell Show Harness horse racing was in existence in the Crookwell district well before our first show in 1878 with the Grabben Gullen Trotting Club being the main body. As many local families were participating in this sport, it seemed only natural that the Crookwell show should also conduct a trotting program along with a ploughing competition. The Grabben Gullen Trotting Club then became known as the Crookwell Trotting Club. To celebrate local harness racing it was decided to conduct a special two day trotting program at the Centenary Show in In all, twelve races were on the program. Goff Hewitt was the chief steward, supported by Peter Hewitt and Tom Hewitt as stewards. The broadcaster was Jack Spackman, with Peter Hewitt as his assistant. Garry Heffernan was the starter with Tas Gay as his assistant. The judges were Greg Heffernan and Wal Pratten. The time keepers were Des Spackman and Greg Leary. The secretary was Anasty Hewitt and the clerk of the course was Peter Blouse. The program comprised twelve races with race one to six run on the Saturday and the remaining six run on the Sunday. Each race followed several heats: 1. Campbell Bros Memorial 2. Hewitt Bros Memorial 3. Price Bros Memorial 4. J Kelleher Memorial 5. J A H Reeves Memorial 6. Selby Lannan Memorial 7. E A Abbey Memorial 8. Gymkhana Race 9. T J Glanville and Late Patrick Glanville 10. Harold Stephenson Memorial Trophy 11. F Spackman and A Gorman Memorial 12. N Churchill and J Smith Memorial There was also a Special by J Shepherd of $100 for the first horse to run 2.10 or better in any race on the programme, winning performances only. The total prize money for these events was $2,000. The present day track was built by members of the Crookwell Trotting Association under the guidance of Frank Hewitt with the approval of the Crookwell A P & H Society. The value of the work was estimated at 400 ($800), no mean amount in those days. It was a tremendous effort and the track stands as a monument to Frank Hewitt and his team
