3 By Steve Andersen DRF.COM/BREEDING DAILY RACING FORM Saturday, January 24, 2015 PAGE 3 HORSE OF THE YEAR IS CALIFORNIA S AMBASSADOR Emily Shields Horse of the Year California Chrome is attracting numerous fans just to see him. ARCADIA, Calif. The horse with the ideal name has become the perfect ambassador for California Thoroughbred breeding. When the immensely popular California Chrome was named 2014 Horse of the Year on Jan. 17, he gave California breeding a much-needed boost in recognition after several years of declining foal crops in one of the nation s most important racing regions. As California Chrome nears his first scheduled start of 2015, in the $500,000 San Antonio Stakes at Santa Anita on Feb. 7, racetrack executives and leading breeders in the state are hoping that public awareness of the colt will lead to greater interest in horse racing in general and a higher investment in owning and breeding Thoroughbreds. You know where he s from when you see his name, said Doug Burge, the executive director of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association. We ve been trying to capitalize on his success all year. The Horse of the Year title has been an exclamation point. Burge has worked for the CTBA since the mid-1990s. In recent years, he has witnessed a decline in foal crops that coincided with the recession. In 2002, California s foal crop was 3,823, a figure that fell to 1,998 in 2010 and 1,582 in 2013, according to statistics compiled by The Jockey Club. The number of foals rose in 2014 to 1,629. According to Jockey Club statistics, the number of mares bred in California rose from 2,332 in 2013 to 2,472 in Burge thinks that further growth is possible in the 2015 breeding season, thanks in part to California Chrome. From 2006 to the last couple of years, we were trying to stabilize and keep things going, he said. Now, we re showing some growth. We have a lot more optimism. This horse has greatly assisted. People that were out of the breeding industry, or on the fence, they see what happened to him and they believe they can do it themselves. It s got people more willing to invest in breeding. Burge said that investment has included California-based owners and breeders acquiring in-foal mares at recent sales outside of the state and making plans to bring the mares to California to foal and to be bred back to stallions in the state in coming months. The new mares add much-needed livestock to the state s broodmare population. There is a hope that new breeding farms can be developed. In the last decade, prominent breeding farms such as River Edge Farm in Buellton, and Pepper Oaks Farm in Santa Ynez, have closed. Replacing them is not easy with suitable land at a premium. We saw a big consolidation in the number of farms in the last several years, Burge said. Those that have remained are doing well. The training tracks are full. At the same time, I ve had several conversations and meetings with potential new farm owners that are looking at various places now. I m hopeful they ll commit to something by the middle of this year, and they can be part of the breeding industry next year. California Chrome, who races for breeders Steve Coburn and Perry Martin, has won 9 of 16 starts and earned $4,222,650. Before reaching national prominence last spring with wins in the Santa Anita Derby, Kentucky Derby, and Preakness Stakes, California Chrome ran in four races in the second half of 2013 and early 2014 that are part of the Golden State series of stakes administered by the CTBA and racetracks. Launched for the 2012 racing season, the 37-race series, worth more than $5.5 million in 2015, incorporated existing stakes with new events to provide yearlong opportunities for statebreds throughout the state. The 2015 series begins on Saturday with five stakes on the California Cup program at Santa Anita. Last year, California Chrome won the California Cup Derby. From there, to go and do what he did, it really validates the whole Cal-bred program, Burge said. It s very gratifying. California Chrome is by Lucky Pulpit, who stands at Harris Farms, and was the state s leading stallion by progeny earnings in Lucky Pulpit stood for $2,500 in 2014, a fee hiked to $10,000 for Farm officials hope to attract a book of 100 mares this year. California Chrome was raised at Harris Farms and was back on the property for several weeks last summer for a freshening following the Triple Crown. Farm owner John Harris said raising California Continued on page 4

4 PAGE 4 Saturday, January 24, 2015 DAILY RACING FORM DRF.COM/BREEDING Continued from page 3 Chrome at Harris Farms is an honor. To have him raised on the farm, it verifies we must know what we re doing, Harris said, laughing. He s been such a Cinderella horse. It s a team effort. Everything has to come together. Harris said the popularity of California Chrome will resonate with racing fans, but has benefits much deeper in the game with breeders. I think it gives us more respect on the national and international scene, he said. California has always been a good place to raise horses. Over the next few months, that could lead to more activity from mare owners, though Harris thinks the gains will be limited. I m not that optimistic that we ll see dramatic growth, but I think it will stabilize, he said. Owner and breeder Madeline Auerbach is a member of the California Horse Racing Board and a former member of the board of directors of the Thoroughbred Owners of California. Auerbach is the owner of Unusual Heat, the state s leading stallion by progeny earnings from and an active stallion this year. From her perspective, the presence of California Chrome offers California racing a rare opportunity to educate the general public about the nuances of the game, especially sports fans who may not be familiar with racing. It is an opportunity that cannot be wasted, she said. I d love to see the tracks do a lot more promotion, Auerbach said. Maybe I m not following enough social media, watching enough television, reading enough. What it boils all down to we re just still not very welcoming. In my opinion, it s very intimidating for people go to the racetrack. I wish we d reach out to people and let them come and learn about our game. The track challenged with that assignment at this time of year is Santa Anita. The presence of California Chrome in the San Antonio is a race promoter s dream, and could be the only opportunity to see the 4-year-old in the state in coming months. Trainer Art Sherman said last weekend that there is a possibility that California Chrome will start in the $10 million Dubai World Cup in the Middle East on March 28. If that occurs, California Chrome will need time to recover from that trip in the spring and may not race again until the summertime, at Santa Anita or Del Mar. Nate Newby, Santa Anita s director of marketing, estimates California Chrome could draw an additional 5,000 customers to the track. He said the typical crowd for a Saturday at Santa Anita is 7,000 to 8,000 people. If he could draw 5,000, that gets us to 13,000. Do I think he could add 12,000 to 13,000? That s a lot to ask. There is always the chance the figure could soar with additional media coverage approaching the race. Much like Zenyatta five years ago, California Chrome is a horse becoming a household name. Last weekend, Newby said Santa Anita officials were finalizing its promotional campaign that will largely focus on advertising through print, radio, and digital media. We re planning on it being a big day, and we re spending money, he said. We re excited to have a big February event. For promoters of California racing and breeding, the attention cannot come at a better time.

Lucky Pulpit checked in significantly below that, with just 73 representatives on the track in But when one of those runners is California Chrome, numbers don t matter. Fueled by the exploits of his dual classicwinning Horse of the Year, who bankrolled just over $4 million, Lucky Pulpit finished 2014 with $5,149,180 in progeny earnings. That was enough for the 14-year-old Pulpit horse, who stands at Harris Farms in Coalinga, Calif., to edge out the late Tribal Rule, with $5,047,047 in progeny earnings, to top the charts. Lucky Pulpit had 32 winners in 2014, led by multiple stakes winners California Chrome and Floating Feather. California Chrome ripped off six stakes victories, including Grade 1 triumphs in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, Santa Anita Derby, and Hollywood Derby. The California-bred colt, who also finished third in the Breeders Cup Classic, has a career bankroll of $4,222,650. Running at a considerably lower level, Floating Feather was also consistent, winning 5 of 7 starts while not missing the board during his 6-year-old campaign. The gelding captured four stakes at Les Bois Park in Boise, Idaho, taking the Ron Yanke Memorial Stakes, Les Bois Park Stakes, Idaho Cup Classic Stakes, and I.T.A. Willy Fiddle Stakes. Another of Lucky Pulpit s standouts is Rousing Sermon, a stakes winner and Grade 1-placed as a juvenile in The horse went winless in 2014 but did finish second in a pair of stakes in California, pushing his career earnings to $756,342. Lucky Pulpit also was represented last season by stakes-placed winners Lucky LEADING CALIFORNIA GENERAL SIRES BY 2014 PROGENY EARNINGS RANK NAME (BORN, SIRE) 2015 FARM 2015 STUD FEE RNRS WNRS 2014 EARNINGS 1 Lucky Pulpit (2001, Pulpit) Harris Farms $10, $5,149,180 2 Tribal Rule (1996, Storm Cat) Died ,047,047 3 Bluegrass Cat (2003, Storm Cat) Ballena Vista Farm 6, ,943,116 4 Unusual Heat (1990, Nureyev) Harris Farms 20, ,164,699 5 Eddington (2001, Unbridled) Ballena Vista Farm 3, ,210,201 Cotton, Lawly s Goal, Hey Lucky, and Pulmarack. Overall, from his first five crops of racing age excluding newly turned juveniles Lucky Pulpit is represented by 67 winners from 100 starters for earnings of $8,739,748 through Jan. 18. His progeny average earnings are a healthy $87,397. Lucky Pulpit raced as a homebred for Idaho-based owners Larry and Marianne Williams, who purchased his dam, the winning Cozzene mare Lucky Soph, for $200,000 carrying the colt at the 2000 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. Grade 3-placed on turf as a juvenile, Lucky Pulpit was briefly on the classics trail the following spring, finishing second in the Grade 2 Santa Catalina at 1 1/16 miles before running unplaced in the San Rafael and the Santa Anita Derby. He returned to turf that summer and spent the majority of his remaining racing career on it, including a victory in the 2005 Smile Stakes going five furlongs at Arlington Park. In all, he won or placed in seven stakes, bankrolling $209,928. Lucky Pulpit entered stud at John Harris s Harris Farms for the 2007 season, and his pedigree lent itself well to his second career. His dam, Lucky Soph, is out of the multiple Grade 3-winning Lucky Mel mare Lucky Spell, and Lucky Soph is a half-sister to Trolley Song, dam of the late Unbridled s Song, a multiple Grade 1 winner and very successful sire. Lucky Soph is also the dam of another useful regional sire, Drewman, who stands at Breakway Farm in Dillsboro, Ind., and is represented by runners such as Grade 3 winner Cigar Man. Lucky Pulpit got off to a fast start at stud, being California s leading freshman sire of Following his breakout season in 2014, the stallion s stud fee for this year is quadrupling, to $10,000. The horse began last season at an advertised fee of $2,500, and was later listed as private as California Chrome s star began to rise. Lucky Pulpit is one of two stallions among California s top 10 leading general sires for Harris Farms, which also stands stalwart Unusual Heat, fourth on the list after reigning as the state s leading sire from 2008 to Unusual Heat, who owns California s single-season progeny earnings record, did finish as the year s leading turf sire. Sires standing at Ballena Vista Farm of Ramona, Calif., dominated the top 10, with the late Tribal Rule finishing second by earnings; newcomer Bluegrass Cat, the state s leading returning juvenile sire, third; Eddington fifth; pensioned Benchmark eighth; and the late Bertrando ninth. Red Outlaw, who won five straight races, including four stakes, to begin his season, was the top earner in 2014 for Tribal Rule, who died in May. Tribal Rule was also the state s leading synthetic surface sire of the year.

The colt did not miss the board in four outings on dirt in 2014, his only unplaced efforts coming in a pair of graded stakes on a synthetic surface. His most successful foal was London Legacy, who was winless in four starts, finished second three times, and earned $39,400. It was still good enough for the freshman stallion title. He kind of backed into it, didn t he? stallion owner Terry Lovingier said. Lovingier considered Grace Upon Grace s 2-year-olds of 2014 to be a test crop, and is hopeful the 2015 season can show the stallion s ability. Supporting his argument, a Grace Upon Grace yearling colt was purchased for $50,000 by trainer Jeff Bonde at the 2014 Northern California yearling sale. Grace Upon Grace stands for $2,000 at Lovingier s Lovacres Ranch in Warner Springs, Calif. Grace Upon Grace had 13 named 2-year-olds in The year-olds will have a greater presence, Lovingier insists. He s going to do really well, Lovingier predicted recently. I ve bred more to him. He s got some really nice babies. His best years are still to come. Grace Upon Grace s progeny earnings for 2014 were the lowest in recent memory for a leading freshman stallion. In the last decade, the leading freshman stallion who came closest to Grace Upon Grace s figure was Royal Cat, who had progeny earnings of $121,971 in By comparison, Square Eddie led the 2013 freshman list with progeny earnings of $473,045, ranking 10th on the national list. In 2012, Heatseeker led the California list with earnings of $415,412, LEADING CALIFORNIA FRESHMAN SIRES BY 2014 PROGENY EARNINGS RANK NAME (BORN, SIRE) 2015 FARM 2015 STUD FEE RNRS WNRS 2014 EARNINGS 1 Grace Upon Grace (2007, Rio Verde) Lovacres Ranch $2, $81,872 2 The Pamplemousse (2006, Kafwain) Rancho San Miguel 2, ,906 3 Elusive Warning (2004, Elusive Quality) 2, ,825 Madera Thoroughbreds 4 Sundarban (2006, A.P. Grace Upon Grace was 37th on the national list in In 2014, The Pamplemousse finished second on the California freshman list, with progeny earnings of $68,906. The Pamplemousse had six runners, including one winner. He stands for $2,500 at Rancho San Miguel in San Miguel, Calif. Only four freshman sires in California sired winners in 2014 Elusive Warning with three, and Many Rivers, Mesa Thunder, and The Pamplemousse with one each. This was the second time in four years that Lovacres Ranch had the leading freshman sire in the state. In 2011, Awesome Gambler led first year-stallions with progeny earnings of $287,862. Awesome Gambler, who stands for $5,000 at Lovacres this year, ranked 44th on California s general sire list in 2014 with progeny earnings of $461,909. Grace Upon Grace, by the Nureyev stallion Rio Verde, won 3 of 12 starts and earned $162,646 in a two-year career in After beating maidens in his debut at Hollywood Park, Grace Upon Grace ran in five consecutive stakes from June through September of his 2-year-old season in He was second in two stakes during that span, the Willard L. Proctor Memorial Stakes against open company at Hollywood Park and the Graduation Stakes against Californiabreds at Del Mar. As a 3-year-old, Grace Upon Grace won twice, an optional claimer at Hollywood Park on turf and a $40,000 claimer at Del Mar, both in sprints. Lovingier said that a bowed tendon compromised Grace Upon Grace s racing career. Grace Upon Grace entered stud in 2011 at an advertised fee of $2,000. Lovingier bred and raced Grace Upon Grace, who is out of stakes winner Chasing Wind, the dam of three stakes winners. Chasing Wind s most notable foal is Rgirldoesn tbluff, a fourtime stakes winner at Calder, and the runner-up in the Grade 3 First Lady Handicap at Gulfstream Park in Rgirldoesn tbluff earned $214,270. He s got a fantastic pedigree on the bottom side, Lovingier said. Lovingier said he is ready to lead by example, investing in better mares for the stallions at his farm. The expenditure is what is needed to support Grace Upon Grace. I m raising the quality of the mares for all my stallions, he said. I m kind of excited about it.

14 PAGE 14 Saturday, January 24, 2015 DAILY RACING FORM DRF.COM/BREEDING 2014 CALIFORNIA STALLION HONORS UNUSUAL HEAT Leading California turf sire by earnings Dark Bay or Brown Horse Foaled Jan. 1, 1990 in Kentucky Nureyev 77 Rossard 80 Northern Dancer 61 Special 69 Glacial 66 Peas-Blossom 68 Nearctic 54 Natalma 57 Forli 63 Thong 64 Pardal 47 Glacis 58 Midsummer Night 57 Fan Light 56 Barbara D. Livingston By Joe Nevills Through all the changes in California racing over the past 17 years shuttering tracks, shuffling of racing dates, new surfaces, and new leadership one of the state s pillars of consistency has been Unusual Heat. The 25-year-old son of Nureyev has been a fixture in the Golden State since entering stud in 1998, and that enduring success has helped him become the all-time leading sire by California-bred earnings. Unusual Heat reigned as California s leading sire by turf earnings for an 11th straight year in 2014, with 34 winners from 84 starters on grass and earnings of $2,864,232. His turf earnings doubled that of the second-leading sire, the late Tribal Rule, who finished with $1,416,001 in progeny earnings. The only drawback of the stallion s 2014 record, it seems, is that he did not finish the year as the state s leading general sire, ending a run that began in In his defense, most years don t produce a California-sired dual classic winner. It was a productive year, definitely not his best year, said Harris Auerbach, managing partner of the stallion s ownership, M. Auerbach LLC and The Unusual Heat Syndicate. Our expectations are really high, and sometimes you can get jaded by the success, but he had a real solid year, especially on the turf. Unusual Heat will stand the 2015 breeding season at Harris Farms in Coalinga, Calif., for a fee of $20,000. Unusual Heat was represented by 128 Northern Hemisphere runners in 2014, with 59 horses winning 106 races for a combined $4,164,699. All five of his stakes winners came on turf, led by Bettys Bambino, winner of the Grade 3 Daytona LEADING CALIFORNIA TURF SIRES BY 2014 PROGENY EARNINGS RANK NAME (BORN, SIRE) 2015 FARM 2015 STUD FEE RNRS WNRS 2014 EARNINGS 1 Unusual Heat (1990, Nureyev) Harris Farms $20, $2,864,232 2 Tribal Rule (1996, Storm Cat) Died ,416,001 3 Decarchy (1997, Distant View) Magali Farms 3, ,182,044 4 Bluegrass Cat (2003, Storm Cat) Ballena Vista Farm 6, ,006,527 5 Heatseeker (2003, Giant s Causeway) Harris Farms 5, ,058 Stakes at Santa Anita. He also sired Grade 3-placed stakes winner Lakerville, stakes winners Boozer, Heat Du Jour, and Unusual Heatwave, and Grade 2-placed Starspangled Heat. Unusual Heat s ability to sire grass runners should have been apparent based on his pedigree and race record. He is by noted turf sire Nureyev and out of the Danish-bred Rossard, who was a champion in Scandinavia before becoming a Grade 1 winner on turf in the United States. On the track, Unusual Heat was a threetime stakes winner in Ireland on turf before finishing his career in North America. Unusual Heat s leading runners have included Acclamation, the champion older male of 2011 and a five-time Grade 1 winner on turf, as well as Grade 1 turf winners The Usual Q. T. and Unusual Suspect and maintrack Grade 1 winner Golden Doc A. As Unusual Heat got into his 20s, Auerbach said that careful management of the stallion has paid dividends, and the plan will stay in place going forward, with an expected book of 35 to 40 mares. The first thing is, and credit to [co-owners] Madeline Auerbach and Barry Abrams, none of us over-bred him, Auerbach said. We just gave him whatever work he had, and we never tried to shuttle him or book over 100 mares, but once he got popular, we just tried to get quality mares and do what was right by him. Also, a big credit to his longevity now goes to the people at Harris Farms, who have really in the last four or five years done a yeoman s job with him. He s 25 years old, so we are being very cautious, he continued. We made an initial limit of 35 [mares], and we ll see how he does. If we can add a few more later in the year, great, and if we can t, he doesn t owe us anything at this point. While Unusual Heat s position among California s top sires doesn t appear to changing anytime soon, he will soon face competition from a platoon of his own sons. Four of Unusual Heat s sons will enter stud in California during the 2015 breeding season. Lakerville will stand beside his sire at Harris Farms, while Gervinho and Unusual Heatwave will stand at Tommy Town Thoroughbreds and He Be Fire N Ice will debut at Rancho San Miguel. That quartet will join Acclamation, who began stud duty at Old English Rancho in It s sort of been the last piece of the puzzle with him, Auerbach said. In terms of being a sire of sires, he s gotten a late start. There s now five of them standing in California and one in Australia. Unusual Suspect just got started this last season down there. We already know he s a pretty good broodmare sire from the limited sample, and we think he has a chance to be a really good sire of sires.

16 PAGE 16 Saturday, January 24, 2015 DAILY RACING FORM DRF.COM/BREEDING BARRETTS KICKS OFF YEAR OF GROWTH, TRANSITION Benoit & Associates The sales pavilion for Barretts in Pomona (above) will not be used after February, with all Barretts auctions moving to Del Mar. By Steve Andersen A season of transition for the Barretts sales company in Pomona, Calif., begins on Monday with a familiar launch the January mixed sale that has started the California auction season for more than two decades. Monday s sale of breeding stock, 2-yearolds, yearlings, and horses of racing age will be the second-to-last sale at the Barretts facility on the Los Angeles county fairgrounds. Following the select sale of 2-year-olds in training on Feb. 23, no further sales will be held at that site. The company will permanently shift its sales events to Del Mar, beginning with a 2-year-olds in training sale in May, a paddock sale of race-ready horses in July, a select yearling sale in August, and an open yearling and horses of racing age sale in October. In the first months of 2016, the January mixed sale and select sale of 2-year-olds in training also will be held at Del Mar. We think that will serve the needs of the industry, Barretts general manager Kim Lloyd said. In its first year of establishing a presence at Del Mar, Barretts will have one of its busiest sales calendars in some time. The 2015 calendar has one more sale than Barretts has conducted in recent years when a yearling sale was conducted in October, but the company did not hold a yearling sale in August. The California Thoroughbred Breeders Association holds a yearling sale in Northern California at Pleasanton each August. The October horses of racing age sale this year will be new for Barretts. The sale was proposed for 2014 but implementation was postponed a year. The July paddock sale at Del Mar has become a fixture on the opening weekend of the race meeting in recent years, but the yearling sale there will be the first time that horses of that age have been sold at that venue by any company since Lloyd said the Barretts calendar for 2015 could change in the future, depending on results and feedback from participants. We ll try to do what we think is best, Lloyd said. We can adjust as we see different needs. We feel Barretts is an important part of the game to recruit new owners and give breeders a chance to do business. Monday s January mixed sale begins at 11 a.m. Pacific and has a catalog of 371 horses, which includes a supplemental catalog of 37 horses. Last year, the January sale had 224 horses sell for a total of $1,944,900, an average price of $8,683 and a median price of $5,350. Those were the highest figures for number sold since 2011 when 256 were purchased. The gross was highest since 2010 when 275 horses sold for $2,013,000. The average and median prices were highest since 2007 when the sale averaged $9,539 and had a median of $4,500. The average reached $7,320 in 2010 but fell to $5,310 in The average price has risen each year since then. It s been a vibrant sale the last few years, Lloyd said. It helps to move horses along. We have a larger catalog than we ve had. The 2007 sale was highlighted by the dispersal of Granja Vista Del Rio Stable. The most expensive horse in that sale was the mare Selvatica, who sold for $560,000. In 2014, a yearling colt by Midnight Lute and a 2-year-old colt by Majestic Warrior shared the highest price of $70,000 at the January mixed sale. The Majestic Warrior colt, now named Sunset Sparkle, has had a series of recorded workouts for trainer Dan Hendricks at Santa Anita since mid- November. Monday s sale includes 18 horses owned by Karen and Mickey Taylor, co-owners of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew. The Taylors are conducting a complete dispersal, through Rick Taylor s Special T Thoroughbreds, that includes the 13-yearold stallion Council Member. There are seven racing prospects and three yearlings by Council Member that are part of the dispersal.
