The Gold Coast club recently devised a submission form/questionnaire and the GRA received 65 of these. But we also received another eight individual submissions commenting on different aspects of the grading policy. Of the 65 submissions, 28 believe their should be no changes to the current system, 31 want Novice races introduced and the 600m event at Albion Park to become a distance race, while six agreed with the proposed changes put forward by the Board. One of those six believed if your dog is good enough to beat the grader, you should be entitled to. The eight other submissions included suggestions such as: three non-consecutive unplaced runs to drop a grade introducing the Victorian system non-penalty events similar to those run in Victoria mid-week on city tracks for reduced prizemoney The Board, at its next meeting, will consider the submissions and make a decision on what changes, if any, will be made to the current grading policy. LADY TRAINER Has vacancies for performed or maiden dogs - reasonable rates. Ph Glenda Dart (02) The (March, 2006) Journal Page 2 THERE was much controversy over the lack of a trophy presentation for the winning connections of the recent Young Guns series at Albion Park. It is disappointing that the leading club is not able to provide a trophy for a feature series which is worth $10,000 to the winner. All other clubs which conduct Young Guns series make a trophy presentation to the winner, at their own expense. It was claimed after this recent Albion Park Young Guns that the series is funded and put on by the GRA, so the GRA should be responsible for the trophy. Firstly I would like to point out that 98 percent of prizemoney paid out by the Brisbane Club is funded by the GRA through the Product Co distribution. To me the claim the GRA should provide a trophy for the Young Guns is disappointing. If the GRA provides 98% of the Brisbane Club s prizemoney, why then does the club provide trophies for all its other feature races? It is hoped management at the Brisbane Club will see fit to provide a trophy and presentation to fit the occasion of such a feature race. OWNERS and trainers should take note... from March 1 the summer dress standard regulations cease. Handlers will be required to adhere to normal post-summer dress standards as per GRA policy. IT is with regret that the Board recently accepted the resignation of steward Bob Watkins. Bob has been with the GRA for the past 13 years and has commanded the respect of both the GRA and the industry in his capacity as a steward. We wish Bob and his wife Margaret all the best in the future and thank Bob for the input he made to this industry and his position

I d like to answer some questions presented to the Board in recent times. Firstly, the GRA is a Statutory Authority answerable to the Queensland Government and bound by legislation including the following Acts of Parliament: * Racing Act 2002 * Financial Administration & Audit Act 1977 * Financial Management Standard 1997 * Statutory Authorities Financial Arrangements Act In addition, the Authority is bound by various arrangement and agreements, such as the Product & Program Agreement, the Intercode Agreement and various arrangements with Sky Racing and UNiTAB. The Authority cannot therefore act outside its charter and is required to consult and seek authority to carry out some functions. In the period 2001 to 2005, the annual distribution received has increased by $1,687, or 18.1% whereas the annual prizemoney distributed by the SEQ Clubs increased by $1,830, or 37.3%. The number of races would have remained basically static. Administration The board is very conscious of containing costs, but it is necessary to employ staff and to incur costs to carry out necessary functions such as ensuring the integrity of the racing product, the safety and well-being of the racing animals and participants, the viability of the racing clubs and the fair distribution of prize money to participants. There are five racing clubs situated outside the South East Queensland area and their needs also must be considered. One third of the participants and greyhounds are serviced by clubs in the north and more than $1.3 million is directly expended by the Authority on those clubs. The income of the Authority is primarily earned from distributions from Queensland Race Product Company Limited. The GRA s share is 9.5% of the distribution irrespective of the market share it commands. I have for many years been pointing out to the industry the current distribution formula severely disadvantages the Queensland greyhound industry. Prizemoney In 2004 we did increase prizemoney for placegetters and introduce prizemoney for fourth placegetters on the TAB tracks and a few years before that when there were substantial increases in the prizemoney paid to the winners. The board formed the view the differential between winners and placegetters was out of balance, and hence the boost to placegetters in early Campad Electronics and Seltronics Services 26 Keith Street Capalaba 4157 Phil Bennett The introduction of fourth prizemoney arose from the extension of First Four betting on TAB meetings and recognised that the connections of the fourth placegetter were providing a contribution to the Queensland racing industry. The Board resisted the payment of unplaced prizemoney until the cost of fuel rose to such an extent there was concern some trainers may not travel to meetings. As we are bound by agreements to provide the contracted race meetings and obliged to maximise turnover, it was felt the reduction of winner s prizemoney to pay an unplaced runners fee was justified. The GRA is keeping records of the number of races where there are not full fields and the clubs will be requested to ensure these funds not paid out as a result will be used for prizemoney purposes in other races. The Queensland industry needs to be competitive with the rest of Australia. It is difficult for Queensland to compete with Victoria in the prizemoney stakes as they receive about three times the distribution of Queensland. They receive Government support and a share of the poker machine turnover in that State. Prizemoney The Board took over the payment of prizemoney to reduce the administrative costs of the Clubs. It also ensured the GST deductions were made, where necessary. It is conceded there is slightly higher costs associated with the processing of the payment of unplaced prizemoney but this is not significant. The making of the payments by the Clubs would cause administrative disruptions to them and result additional paperwork for the clubs and trainers. Sub-Committees The board believes it needs input from a number of sources in relation to some matters. We have recently established two sub- Committees, one on greyhound welfare and the other for promotion. The welfare sub-committee is canvassing the views of vets, people involved in GAP, GRA Chair the Investigative Steward and owners and trainers who have assisted in formulating earlier welfare policy documents. The promotional committee is gaining the views of persons involved in the media to look at opportunities to further promote the code and tweak race programming to increase turnover and greyhound exposure. Race dates cannot just be changed on a whim. The Product and Program Agreement to which the three racing codes are signatories sets out the timeslots that the racing bodies must provide product for. They can be altered but require the approval of the three control bodies, UNiTAB and most importantly Sky Racing. Sunday twilight has been considered but there are penalty rates payable to staff which make the exercise more expensive and the racing turnover on the meetings that we have held at this time is not as great as one would expect and would not justify the additional weekly costs. For many years we have been endeavouring to obtain a Friday or Saturday night timeslot but Sky advise that none are currently available. Statistics I will concede there have been people leaving the industry for a variety of reasons and there is a decline in the number of greyhounds being bred and these are a concern to the GRA. By the same token there have been in recent years a number of trainers from interstate relocating to Queensland and bringing teams to Queensland. I am informed by GRA NSW there are numerous trainers in that State relocating to the northern part of NSW which may impact on the greyhounds available to the industry. We are endeavouring to attract new owners to the industry by making it easier to become an owner or to form a syndicate. The registration cost of a syndicate in NSW is $250 whereas it is free in Queensland. Unfortunately, the advertising of syndicates may breach the Corporations Act and require persons in the business of promoting such to hold a Securities Dealers License (such as the large racehorse syndicaters) Sarah Pringle (07) at COCKATOO LODGE presents... 4 Members of the Broncos, Buster Seymour, Shaun Berrigan, Toni Carroll and Barry Berrigan turned up at Mick and Kay Thrupp's Samford property to check out the Elite State-Call Collect pups that are up for sale. All proceeds from the sale of the pups will go to charity. Charity pups - Make an offer FOUR of the Broncos rugby league team are chasing an Elite State-Call Collect pup from the charity litter. Barry and Shaun Berrigan, Toni Carroll and Buster Seymour have formed a syndicate to chase one of the pups. Breeders Kay and Mick Thrupp donated their champion broodbitch Call Collect for a mating to Elite State. The result was one dog and three bitch pups. The Thrupps have retained the male but the three bitches are for sale with all proceeds going to charity. The Thrupps will even consider selling the dog pup if the offer is right. Offers must be made by phoning Mick Thrupp on (07) The best offers for the pups will buy them. The offers close in mid-march and the Broncos have already put in their offer for one of the pups. They made the offer after visiting the Thrupp s Samford property recently. Call Collect s first litter, which includes Varoom, Delicate Lee, Tool Of Trade, Collective Lee, Intense Lee and Non Blonde, have earned more than $190,000 in stakes. Call Collect was No 3 on the Brisbane Club s dam of the year standings in The pups were whelped on November 23 last year. Part five in this series looks at extra uses for old favourites, Recharge and Neutradex. Extra uses, tips and handy hits - Recharge Recharge, the oral dehydration concentrate for greyhounds, is one of the most successful specific greyhound products worldwide. Recharge, is the only palatable sports drink specifically formulated for greyhounds to rapidly replace fluid and body salt losses after travelling and racing. It lives up to its name in providing a rapid restoration of fluid and vitality after stress periods. As most trainers are aware of the routine use of Recharge, the following information relating to its benefits, extra uses and handy hints will still be of value. Please note: The Get the Facts electrolyte brochure mentioned earlier describes electrolytes in detail, including Recharge, and is available at no charge by calling freecall number Information and benefits Recharge for horses is not the same as Recharge for greyhounds. The formulations are totally different, so please do not use the horse formulation which contains extra salt. Recharge for greyhounds is normally well accepted when given as a 10mL dose in a 250mL (1cup) of cool water as a made-up drink. However, some greyhounds may not accept it initially in water. In this case, try mixing milk/water to improve acceptance, or in pure milk if necessary - bear in mind excess milk in a greyhound not used to it can cause bowel intolerance to lactose and result in low grade diarrhoea and a risk of further dehydration. Recharge concentrate can also be administered over the tongue by syringe. This is the most commonly method given in the prerace period and after racing prior to returning home, particularly during hot weather. Please note: When administering in this way do not exceed 10mL at a single dose and always provide fresh cool water, or milky water for the greyhound to replenish fluids. Recharge will increase the thirst response and fluid must be available immediately after dosage. However, avoid providing an excessive volume of fluid to drink prior to racing, as the race weight limit may be exceeded. Standard doses Before travelling: 5mL Recharge in half a cup (125mL) of water. During travelling: In hot weather for excitable greyhounds - 5mL Recharge in half a cup of water every 1 1/2-2 hours. At kennelling: Ensure bodyweight is not outside the greyhound s weight limit. Non-dehydrated, quiet kennel greyhounds: Give 5mL Recharge in half a cup of water. Dehydrated, nervous, excitable greyhounds: Give10 ml Recharge in one cup full of water (limit amount to avoid exceeding weight limit). After racing: Give free access to 10mL Recharge in one cup of water prior to return travelling. ADVERTISEMENT MONEY SAVING IDEAS FOR GREYHOUND OWNERS Part 5 Cramping greyhounds - dehydrated or excitable greyhounds As well as 100 IU White E daily, 3g Beta-Cel daily, and 10g Calci-D daily in feed, give 10mL Recharge in one cup of water morning and evening. Provide a bowl of made up Recharge and a bowl of fresh water as a choice in the kennel. Nursing bitches - hot weather, large litters Provide 40mL Recharge in a 1 litre bowl of water at all times, with a bowl of fresh water as a choice to replace fluids and electrolytes depleted by milk production. Pre-race dehydration - hot weather Most trainers know when a greyhound is dehydrated. The slow skin return, the sunken eyes, the tucked up gut are all indicators of dehydration. When this is the case, give 10mL Recharge over the tongue in the morning and evening for 2 days prior to racing, provide fluid to drink and moisten dry food by soaking for at least 15 to 20 minutes before feeding. Judicious use of Recharge provides rapid restoration of fluid and vitality and helps greyhounds stay at the top. Extra uses, tips and handy hints for Neutradex Neutradex, the cream of the crop, is a mild diuretic and acid neutralizing syrup and is another innovative Vetsearch product developed over 30 years ago. It helps to combat the effects of acidosis and dehydration in greyhounds, particularly after fast work. Neutradex contains sodium acid citrate in a highly palatable (caramel flavoured) sugar syrup formulation. Neutradex is a buffering agent, added to the mild neutralizing power of alkaline salts, but providing strong neutralizing or buffering activity against acid salts, or build up of acid in the blood or urine. It acts to stimulate the thirst, provide additional alkaline reserves for fast work. It also helps to flush the kidneys, particularly after trialing or racing. Flushing increases the action of the kidneys in clearing toxic wastes produced during hard exercise. Please note: Neutradex should not be given within hours prior to racing, although it may be given after the last trial or hard gallop before a race. This is because alkalinisation of the urine may increase the outflow of potassium and the flushing effect may eliminate other prerace supplements of iron or B group vitamins, so as to reduce their retention time in the body. Routine use Neutradex is recommended as a routine kidney tonic after hard racing. It is not recommended for every day use because of its potential to increase the excretion of potassium by alkalinizing of the urine (see above). The standard dose rate is 6mL mixed into the morning milk (or given by syringe over the tongue) for at least the first morning after a race, and preferably for two mornings following a hard race. Trainers should remember that although Neutradex is helpful in counteracting dehydration by stimulating the desire to drink, it is not as effective as Recharge in meeting electrolyte needs and promoting fluid replacement and electrolyte balance after travelling or racing. Beta-Cel, Beta-K, Recharge and Neutradex complement each other and may be used in conjunction as the occasion arises. Poor appetite after racing Greyhounds not fit enough for the distance or speed of a race often develop low grade acidosis in their back and hind limb muscles which causes them to blow up and swell in the muscles within 30 minutes to 6 hours after racing. This results in discomfort, soreness and loss of appetite. Note: This degree of sore muscles is not the severe form of exertional rhabdomolysis or muscle acidosis syndrome that develops within hours after racing, where the animal rapidly dehydrates and loses body weight. In these more severe cases, immediate veterinary therapy with intravenous fluids and anti-inflammatory agents is required. A dose of 6mL of Neutradex given with 2 Rebound tablets over the tongue on the morning after a hard, fast race, will help neutralize the discomfort and stimulate the animals desire to eat. In severe cases, a follow-up combination on the second day, may help re-establish the appetite and encourage recovery after racing. More money saving ideas in part six of this series. 5 LEFT: A youthful Ash Williams with Faust's Legend. RIGHT: Swimming daily is part of the training routine for the Williams team. BELOW: Williams with kennel star Wiedersehen. Ash produces a Legend or two By DAVID BRASCH ANYONE who knows Ashleigh Williams can vouch for the fact he s a pretty good judge. And why wouldn t he be, because Ash has been around racing stables and kennels since he was 20, handling horses and greyhounds that rank among the best. Now 60, he has a 28-acre property at Woongoolba where he continues to churn out winners and high-class gallopers. Born in Brisbane, Ash s family came from the Esk area. His father Arnold worked on the docks and Ash remembers heading off to the races just about every Saturday when he was a little fella. Ash went to Camp Hill High and playing centre or five-eighth was part of the only open premiership side the school has won. By the time he was 15, Ash was ready to quit school and take up an apprenticeship as a carpenter. But when he had turned 20 he needed a sea change and decided to give strapping racehorses a try. I worked for the late, great Harry Hatten at Ascot who at the time was training such top class horses as Prunda, Basalt and Sister Wastle, Ash told The Journal. He stayed there for 18 months before being coaxed away by then premier Brisbane trainer Fred Best. Because I had worked as a carpenter, the trainers loved to have me around to help fix things for them, he said. I even had a stint with Jim Griffiths who had flying machines like Emborne at the same time. Those battles between Emborne and Basalt were something to see. All this time Ash continued to play football. He played for Easts until he was Under 20, went to Beenleigh for a couple of years and at this time met Peter Bellamy who was playing in the same league side. I spent four years in the stables before going back to building and even had a stint on Thursday Island as captain coach of the local side and won the premiership with them, he said. Ash didn t give football away until he was 32. While working in the stables in his early 20s, Ash, like most other stable workers, was always on the lookout for a tip. One day we ended up at Beenleigh dogs because a guy we knew had a couple of dogs in and he said they would win, one of them for sure, he said. We went to Beenleigh for a bet, the first one landed a good bet, and then the second one won as well. We thought this was pretty easy, so my cousin Greg Eaton suggested we get a greyhound or two ourselves. So Ash bought two pups, three months old, from Mick O Callaghan then one of the stalwarts of the industry in Queensland. We knew nothing about training greyhounds, so Mick gave us a crash course on what to do, he said. How often does it happen? Those two dogs, Alpine Ruler and Fine Embrace, were outstanding. Alpine Ruler won 12 races and was just one-tenth outside the track record at Lawnton, and Fine Embrace won 14 races, said Ash. We sold Alpine Ruler for 500 pounds. It was at this time Ash met up with Kevin McDonald who taught me everything I know about muscle work. It was also a time when Ash ran foul of officialdom in greyhound racing. It was a silly thing but the stewards were going to give Fine Embrace a ticket for failing to chase after she had WON a race, he said. I got pretty irate at the inquiry and touched one of the stewards. I got life. An appeal to a new Control Board six months later saw the ban lifted. In the early 80s Ash and wife Tess and stepson Jason Strauss headed off to Sydney for work. There was more work in Sydney and a lot of work for builders so we moved there in 1982, he said. Ash was not meant to train greyhounds during his stint in NSW, but happened to get back into the industry by accident. I was working at Windsor and a guy called Graham O Keeffe said he had a mate with a dog that couldn t win a race, said Ash. Cosmo Commisso sent that dog to Ash to train and it started to win. Big spending Cosmo said he would buy a good dog for Ash to train. That dog was Faust s Legend. He s won two races at Bulli when we spotted him and Cosmo bought him for $12,000, said Ash. In all Faust s Legend started 68 times for 29 wins, 27 seconds and seven thirds. In 1988 he downed Rich Marzipan and City Skopos to win a semi-final of the Australian Cup at Olympic Park and Cosmo collected $100,000 in winning bets. He was a fantastic dog and made the finals of the Australian Cup, Adelaide Cup and Perth Cup, said Ash. I met Brian Kutner in Melbourne that year. He was there with Daisy Clover who also made the Australian Cup final. While Faust s Legend was easily the best money dog from the Williams kennel, he rates Clover Metre the best he has trained. He won 12 at the Gabba from 558m to 704m, said Ash. Adios Prince was another good dog we had in the early days and he finished second to Top Simbi plenty of times. Ash brought his family back to Brisbane in 1992 and has pottered about with a few dogs ever since. But two and a half years ago he decided to get serious about greyhound racing again and bought his present 28-acre property at Woongoolba. It was a harness horse property that has plenty of natural water, he said. Ash has since put in a huge kennel block, a 400m straight track that is the equal to any, and has plenty of room to gallop pups. Since the move, the winners have flowed freely. Jason picked out Brother Ron from Tasmania, bought him north and Ash produced him to win 17 races and up to top grade at Albion Park. Brother Jay, In Mode, Unravel and the brilliant bitch Wiedersehen have been carrying the flag in recent times. We ve got Surf Lorian and Lomond pups to go on with, as well as those in training now, said Ash who has given up the building work to concentrate on his greyhound training. For such a small kennel, Ash Williams lands plenty of city winners. But then he s had a great background in racing to prepare him for such success. The (March, 2006) Journal Page 5

Jimbooma Jet By OWEN EDMONDS I was talking to this dog today, regards his races won He told me in a greyhound s way, why he loves to run How he loves the car ride in, on race days or to trial Why he tries so hard to win, to watch his owner smile One sixty flamin starts I ve had, and plenty more to come I m still as fit and fiery now as the day that I first run Even though a few months back I cracked a bloody hock The treatment Barry gave me would fix an ironstone rock I didn t need no six months off to mend a tiny crack Just a few short weeks, a coupla trials and presto I was back That young bloke that handles me, I try to keep him straight That s young Josh, Barry s boy. Well, we are sorta mates He claims he s getting giddy just watching me go round But he s probably high on ego handling such a hound And when he dyes his hair reds and greens and blues It s done to match the boxes, but I ve stuffed him in the two Just think of how I ve helped him keeping fit and trim But really I m just showing Josh what it s like to win Yes, by first start was Capalaba at Christmas in O Three From box eight I won first-up, how easy can it be Then idled round for three short months before I won again In that time, getting fit was probably my main aim Back in November year O Four, I struck a purple patch Brisbane, Lismore and Tweed Heads, a couple on each track In the money twelve times straight, boy was I feeling cute Seven wins, four place cheques and a pair of fours to boot Yes, I ve done my best for Barry in the money stakes Rising thirty seven grand in the Sunshine State Plus the other bit I ve earned across the Queensland border I feel I ve earned a crack at stud. I m sure I won t fire water Twenty one wins, twenty four twos, thirty in the three A damn good bread and butter hound, full of chase, that s me Some say I d chase through bricks walls, or up a shaky ladder Any thing that moves at speed, I ll chase, it really doesn t matter So I ll probably keep on racing for as long as it may take To show that I m a candidate for the Queensland (iron dog) stakes Liz Murray Registrar As from 1 January 2006, the Authority will no longer use the word Confederacy to indicate a registration classification. All Confederacies will be renamed Syndicates. Syndicates can now have a maximum of 19 members. Any member of a Syndicate is now entitled to train greyhounds owned by the Syndicate as long as they have a Class 1, Class 2 or Class 3 Trainer s licence. I have received a few phone calls regarding the changes in relation to the old Owner/ Trainer registration and the new Class 3 Trainer s licence. The change is a positive, not a negative. The Class 3 Trainer s licence now allows you to train greyhounds that you own or part own and also allows you to train greyhounds for family members residing with you, without the need to apply for a higher classification. There is no increase in fees and no extra forms to complete. Again I bring your attention to the change in the Stud Dog Statistics printed in this Journal. Due the number of services by artificial insemination with breeding units it has been decided to publish all services undertaken in Queensland and also the services by Interstate Stud Dogs to Queensland owned bitches. The stats will indicate if the service was natural, AI, AI with chilled semen or AI with frozen semen. We would greatly appreciate your assistance by completing all the questions on application forms. We do our best to ensure that our application forms are user friendly and only ask the necessary questions. Incomplete application forms delay processing and also increase costs for the Authority. 7 ABOVE: Postman's Mail crashes across the field from box five to set up a Young Guns lead, and goes on to beat Karma Stanley (below) at Albion Park. Trainer Tony Brett is more than pleased with the result (far right). Young Guns (520m) Albion Park 1 POSTMAN S MAIL $2.90 (Just The Best-Miss Corleone) Owner Yvonne Kutner Trainer: Tony Brett 2 KARMA STANLEY $5 (Go Wild Teddy-Hanson Pip) 3 COMPLIANT $31 (Token Prince-Must Obey) Others: 4 Back In Ten $11, 5 Farmor Assassin $12, 6 Yatala Zappa $17, 7 Barrio Blade $2.90, 8 Bush Honey $3.80. Time: The Right Mail THE esteem Brian and Yvonne Kutner have for Postman s Mail can be judged by a few factors. The first is that when Tony Brett offered to buy the dog on behalf of a kennel client, there was no prying the Just The Best-Miss Corleone dog from the Kutners. The second is, when his older half sister Texas Woman came on season the same day as the recent Albion Park Young Guns final won by Postman s Mail, the Kutners immediately booked the bitch into Just The Best. It s a great cross and already proven by this litter, said Brian Kutner. Postman s Mail had finished a close second to Berella Electra in a Young Guns final at the Gold Coast a month before. 8 Ryan aims to be better than the Hoi Poloi By DAVID BRASCH PETER Roy jokes that his nephew Ryan Ayre was so keen on greyhounds from a young age that he even applied with his school to do work experience with Roy as a prospective trainer. Roy s sister Fay is Ryan s mum. I don t know if the family was too happy with me getting Ryan involved in greyhound racing, but the kid loves the game and he s got a flare for it, said Roy who has long had his own flare for getting a greyhound to win races. Ryan, now 26, was hooked from about grade seven when he went as Pups For Sale 40 acre property provides... * Spacious galloping paddocks with dams and shade * Quality feeding and worming program * Pups taught to lead at an early age and handled regularly * All pups kennelled before breaking in * Excellent facilities available for whelping litters often as he could to Uncle Pete s kennels at Arana Hills. He also couldn t wait to get working so he could afford the greyhounds he Z ammit's Rearing and Spelling Farm 'If you want your puppy to have good nutrition, plenty of galloping and constant care, take advantage of years of experience within the industry and give it the best start in life on our farm' GEORGE ZAMMIT For any information, pedigrees, faxes, s or photos Contact George Zammit (07) wanted and picked up an apprenticeship as a carpenter. I bought my first dog for $1000 when I was 18, Ryan told The Journal. It was Royston Magic (Travelling Ghost-Magic Mittens) which he bought at an Ipswich Auction and proceeded to win five races with including his one and only Thursday night win at Albion Park on March 11, But at 18 I decided to move out of home and into a house with some mates, so greyhounds took a back seat for a short time, said Ryan. Royston Magic joined Roy s kennels and won 10 more races. But it wasn t that successful a start for Ryan. Royston Magic had eight starts and didn t run a place, but then won a maiden heat and final at Capalaba, two races at Ipswich and then the Thursday night win at Albion Park, he said. Ryan and his mates parted ways six years ago when he met Samantha and the pair have been together since, marrying in September last year. We bought a place at Wavell Heights together in 2001 and straight away I got a few more dogs, said Ryan. Peter Roy had great success with Royston Raider (Worthy Reward-Una s Revenge) who set a track record over 630m at Ipswich. Peter and Ryan shared ownership in Royston Mist a daughter of Arelem and Una s Revenge. We put Royston Mist to Shape Shifter and I got four of the litter, Game Over, Amigo Fast, Raid The Gold and Enshape and they all won races for me, said Ryan. Game Over was the best winning nine but he had very little early pace. Enshape finished fourth at Albion Park in a National Distance state final. In all the four won 22 races for Ryan. Only a few months ago Ryan and Youthful trainer Ryan Ayre with promising youngster Hoi Poloi. Samantha bought Les Lewis Burpengary greyhound property. We d had a few problems with the council over the dogs at Wavell Heights, so when this property came up, we jumped at the chance, said Ryan. We ve got kennels, pup yards and a straight track all on three acres. It s perfect for the six dogs I ve got. Ryan keeps himself busy. He has just been appointed a supervisor for Craft Building. He s up at 4am to work his dogs and home in the afternoon to go racing. His team includes highly promising Hoi Poloi in who he shares ownership with Peter Roy. He also has two Surf Lorian-Bogie Benz pups at seven months old which he shares ownership with Col Hollywood Hamilton. Ryan came to train Hoi Poloi, winner of her first five starts, by accident. Peter decided to sell up his Arana Hills home and move to Kallangur so I got the dogs while he was setting up his new home, said Ryan. Hoi Poloi has continued to improve and is targeting the Ipswich Auction series. Ryan has a plan to stay in greyhound racing for good. I m looking at getting bitches to train and breed myself a future in this industry, he said. Samantha loves the dogs and helps out a lot with the GAP program. I ll keep my team to a manageable number. Ryan is managing them to perfection. A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself The (March, 2006) Journal Page 8

Heat stress hits Whisky JOURNEY Park Stud and Terry Hines, owner of Whisky Assassin, have announced the son of Awesome Assassin-Princess Whisky has suffered heat stress recently which has had a shortterm impact on his sperm production. During December/January, Sydney suffered 40-degree temperatures. Journey Park Stud consulted with a number of leading independent vets and the University of NSW was engaged and a series of tests undertaken. The tests confirmed Whisky Assassin suffered heat stress and will require six weeks rehabilitation to allow his sperm levels to return to normal. We have been reassured by the experts that the condition is a common one for young stud dogs and they assured us he will be able to return to full stud duties during the March quarter, a stud spokesman said. Both the well being of Whisky Assassin and the protection of breeders are at the forefront of Journey Park s decision making. The dog is booked out until the new quarter starting March 1. 10 Craig builds smart team By DAVID BRASCH CRAIG Chandler admits his love affair with greyhound racing has been an on again, off again affair. At the moment... he s in love. Craig, 44, has a small, but everexpanding team of dogs at his Buccan property including the promising Sir Cyrus a recent Gold Coast, Capalaba and Ipswich winner in fast times. Craig s love of the industry was instilled in him by his dad Roy. Dad and a bunch of mates got a few dogs years ago, said Craig. One of those was Agricola Lass who was trained by Darryl Heck and went from fifth grade to FFA class at the Gabba, specially over 704 metres. Everyone had a good time with her. As is the usual case, one dog led to another, which led to another. The boys bred with Agricola Lass and it went from there, said Craig. By then 19 years old and wanting to get into the swing of things in greyhound racing, Craig and his father bought a dog from Melbourne called Tivoli Tootsie who eventually won five or six at the old Gold Coast track. And we bred from Tivoli Toostsie, he said. Got five pups and kept them all including Tivoli Gamble who was a Lawnton specialist winning 18 of her 54 starts. Craig was training by this time, dad was left to finance the venture. Saturday (night) April 1 Heats Golden Easter Egg (520m) Best 80 plus reserves. Noms close March 28 10am. As anyone in greyhound racing would know, the finances were stretched. My wife Sharon and I were renting a place at Wynnum at the time and after the lack of success with that litter, I decided to have a spell from dogs for a few years. Those few years turned out to be almost six. We focussed on other things and started a family. They have two children Brooke, 10, and Nathan, 8. A few years ago Craig was getting the itch to get a dog again. I saw an advert for a Just The Best bitch from a damline Jim Galloway had, he said. Eventually the couple bought a bitch called Dancing Danica and gave her to Claude Dacey to train. There was trouble with the bitch and eventually she came home to us, said Craig. I bought a set of kennels and suddenly I was back training. But Dancing Danica was trouble. Eventually Warren Scanella got her to turn the corner and at her next race start Dancing Danica won at Albion Park by nine lengths in She won a few for us after that but eventually tore an Achilles tendon. It wasn t long after that Craig had bought another dog, Dancing Danica was Letter to the Editor The Chandler family was all on hand when Sir Cyrus won recently at Ipswich. put into pup but was bitten by a snake and died when she was five weeks into the pregnancy. I lost interest after that and thought that would be the end of me training, he said. It wasn t. Only a few years ago he and Sharon bought five acres at Buccan. The property has a 25-dog license and Craig set about stocking it with racing dogs. He bought a Brett Lee-Hypo Havoc bitch and put her into pup to Surf Lorian and plans on taking her to Lindale Blue next. He has Sir Cyrus winning now and while he rates him handy, says his box manners need work. I ve got three in work and three young ones now 14 months old, he said. I m working on a straight track now and reckon it will be 12 months to get the property fully established. Craig s dad Ray is 75 now and utilises a walker to get around. But he still comes to the dogs with us every time we are racing and loves coming, said Craig. In fact, dad is part of the RC Syndicate that races the dogs. And he comes out to the property as much as he can. Craig Chandler is putting into place the basis of a successful greyhound racing operation. His dad has seen to that. Dear Sir, I am replying to Phil Bennett s comments regarding the perception that the participants think the Authority does not consider their submissions. I would like to rectify the word perception to FACT. I have sent submissions to the Authority over the years and not only were they not considered, it never was acknowledged that they even received them. A courteous letter thanking a licensee for their time would have sufficed. I came to the conclusion, like many others no doubt, that the decisions were already made and they were only going through the beaurocratic process of consultation. I would like to give another example of the customer friendliness the GRA are to their participants. Recently, my wife was paid some prizemoney by mistake. A common occurrence, I believe. We only train one dog at the moment and he won his next two races. We assumed they would adjust on the next payment. No. The money had to be paid back separately. My wife paid the money into the local office before Christmas. We resume racing in the New Year and here is my wife s Wanted Dead or Alive photo on office wall as a Defaulter. Everyone got a laugh but when she went to nominate the next week she was refused as she was a defaulter. I wonder why no one wants to race dogs in Queensland with a big brother attitude like this. 11 By DAVID BRASCH A GROUP of enthusiasts is behind a push for drag lure coursing to be introduced at Capalaba. Di O Donnell, well know to the greyhound racing industry as chief of DinkyDi Web Designs, was sitting at home watching Sky s Catching Pen one Sunday. I spotted a segment on drag lure coursing and was fascinated, made a few inquiries and here we are, she told The Journal. Here we are is to the stage where the Capalaba Club has got behind the idea with an approach to the GRA Board and a series of exhibition races are being planned, before a full scale drag lure coursing calendar is introduced. Drag Lure Coursing is just like live hare coursing, but on a straight track, behind a drag lure of course, with two dogs slipped just like it is still done in Ireland. Di and Capalaba recently hosted Judi Hurley, the secretary and racing manager of the GBOTA Coursing Club in South Australia, to give the Queenslanders some guidance etc on drag lure coursing. The South Australian club has 12 dates each year and has a home track at Virginia, 35 minutes from Adelaide but in the middle of the greyhound population in that state. The season runs from April to October, a winter sport because of the fact greyhounds race sometimes up to three times a day. South Australia was the last state to stop live hare coursing, back in the mid-80s. Drag lure coursing is a great alternative for some dogs, specially those who have difficulty getting around corners on oval racetracks, or cannot run 500 metres, Judi told The Journal. Judi said her club has about 130 members and the feature event each year is the Waterloo Cup worth $3000 to the winner. The running of that time-honoured event alternates between the GBOTA Coursing club and the Mt Gambier club each year. The Waterloo Cup is five rounds, with one of a Saturday and four to win the final on the Sunday. The distance of each slip is about 325 metres from slips to the catching pen, said Grafton Carnival Grafton Easter carnival is fast approaching with heats of the Easter Maiden on Saturday April 8 with the final to be held on Saturday April 15, which will also see the running of the Grafton Derby and Oaks. Thanks to Sam Cauchi of Rocky Ridge Farm, Brian Kutner jnr (Black Enforcer) and Jim Osborn (Elite State) free services to Elite State, Black Enforcer and Cyrus The Virus will be provided to the winners of the Easter Maiden, Derby and oaks. The Easter Maiden will be sponsored by NSW GBOTA. The Derby and Oaks will be sponsored by Sam Cauchi s Rocky Ridge Farm, Brian Kutner jnr and Jim Osborn. Racing is on a big, safe, loam surface. Country grading applies, see add in this issue. Judi. The actual race distance is about 300 metres. Capalaba s drag lure coursing distances would be about the same. The benefits of drag lure coursing are many, as I have already mentioned, said Judi. But because the slip is against only one other dog, it also benefits field shy dogs, those that may be hopeless out of the starting boxes, youngsters needing a big confidence booster, dogs coming back from injury, and even those jaded by a lot of circle track racing. The current star of drag lure coursing is Toora Tiger a Victorian dog and a winner around Sandown. He was put out at Sandown for fighting but in three months coursing he has won $13,000 and was the first to win the Victorian and South Australian Waterloo Cups. South Australia runs a Derby and Oaks, worth $800 to the respective winners, the Committee Cup and the Rising Star Stakes. The latter is open to 16 dogs and is completed on the same day. We have a bookie fielding on the coursing and in years gone by he would turn over $40,000 on the day, but that has dwindled to about $2000 these days, said Judi. People love to go coursing. Dogs are not kenneled, it s a more relaxed day. Fee $660 Stud fee includes progesterone testing and surgical insemination by Dr Christine Kidd. LEFT: Di O'Donnell, Judi Hurley and Board deputy chair Kerry Watson were at Capalaba putting some touches onto the drag lure coursing idea. RIGHT: Drag Lure Coursing in action. Qld push for In Queensland it is expected dogs would be kennelled simply because of the weather conditions. We are hoping to run some exhibition races between events at Capalaba in the next few months, said Di. Bob Patching has got involved with the push for this form of racing and has been a great help. We believe it would be easy to adopt the South Australian rules here and are hopeful we could get underway sometime drag lure coursing Studmaster: Pat Hennessy Ph (02) cheechville@optusnet.com.,au (Awesome Assassin-Highland Bride) Flying Scott this year. The recent Irish live hare coursing Derby, Oaks and Champion Stakes attracted almost 50,000 to the three consecutive days at Powerstown Park in Clonmel. Coursing is a tradition in Ireland, the home of greyhound racing. A few dedicated Queenslanders hope to bring a little piece of that tradition to Capalaba in the not too distant future. It was Lincoln Stanley who was raced by Lynne Ivanovic and trained by Shayne Parker at Coominya. Back in March last year Lynne was at Capalaba to see Lincoln Stanley race in a maiden, said Ted. She was thinking of buying the dog and went along to see him race. Unfortunately Lynne didn t get to see the dog race. She suffered a stroke at the track and was rushed to hospital. Dogs are 24/7 and Joy and I had decided we would like to go out with a winner, having some fun, instead of carting slow dogs around, he said. Ted also puts a lot of the success of Lincoln Stanley down to the fact he has changed his feeding routine for the dog. I split feed him, he gets the same amount, but half in the morning and the other half at night, he said. It has settled him down at night. While the track record at Capalaba was his highlight, Lincoln Stanley has also won in at the Gold Coast, not far off Surf Lorian s track record of Ted says Gyprock Bob was as good a dog as he has trained, but Lincoln Stanley has given him the greatest thrills. Joy and I are on cloud nine, he said. The phone hasn t stopped ringing, Reg Kay, John Murray, Edna Stafford... and plenty others have rung to congratulate us. Ted is in no hurry with his dog. He ll continue to run him through his grades and eventually head to Albion Park when he feels he s ready. Joy and I get up at 3.45am every morning to walk the dogs, and head to Capalaba a couple of times a week to gallop... and it s a pleasure to do it, he said. From the time he was a teenager, he, his dad Alfred and brother Jim all of us a bit of a punter went greyhound racing six days a week in Victoria. Our routine was, Olympic Park on Monday, Geelong on Tuesday, Traralgon on Wednesday, Sandown Thursday, Warragul on Friday and on Saturday we went to Cranbourne, John told The Journal. Sunday was a day of rest... in those days there was no Sunday racing to attract the Hutchison family. By 18, Jim and I had bought our first greyhound, a pup we bought from one of the trade papers of the time, but it was no good, said John. So the boys decided to do their homework, got a pile of Australian Stud Books and researched the best damlines about. We spotted that Best Betsy had been a huge influence, found that the Maxwells in Swan Hill had plenty of pups that traced back to her so headed up to see them. From those initial purchases came some high class gallopers. About this time I met my wife Wendy and she and I soon left the dogs to Jim to race, said John. Jim was never a breeder so he gave the bitches back to the Maxwells and so many of them became influential in pedigrees, bitches like Sweet Akii, Mush Husky and Red Akii. The Hutchisons were married in 1978 and John decided to concentrate on a family and work commitments. Wendy has always been involved in showing dogs, Samoids initially and Bichon Three NEW models to choose from... John and Wendy Hutchison with handy sprinter Alexander Allen. Fuse in more recent times, said John. In 1986 we were in England for the famous Cruffs Dog Show and while there we noticed the product Eukanuba and couldn t help but be impressed with the way dogs improved when fed the product. John and Wendy decided Australia was ready for Eukanuba. The parent company was in the US and we even had to get legislation re-written to get the product into the country, said John. From 1989, when Eukanuba first went on the market, until 1999 the Hutchisons built the production and sale of this alternative feeding product into a $15 million business. Because of John s long-time interest in greyhound racing, he felt that industry was ready for Eukanuba as well. We became the biggest sponsors of greyhound racing in Australia, he said. At one time we sponsored such races as the Brisbane Cup, Easter Egg, cups at Warragul, Geelong and Ballarat, the Laurels and Silver Chief, the Nationals and the Derby and Oaks in South Australia. Our yearly sponsorship budget was $500,000. But like all good things, it came to an end. The parent company in the States, IAMS, decided to take control of the outlets all over the world, said John. So we looked around form, in our opinion, an even better version and developed Nutrience. But by 2002, after two years building up the business they decided retirement was the best option for them, sold up and retired. Because of John and Wendy s close relationship with greyhound racing, and the many friends they had in the industry, they decided to get involved in ownership, and the winners came thick and fast. They paid $4500 for Keen To Run and he won $16,000 both here and eventually in NZ. He was a flying machine who set a track record at Geelong over 347m in the early 90s. We even got a frozen semen straw from him and have just mated a bitch of ours called Westar Whisper, said John. Good friends Gavin and Robina Fitzpatrick suggested the Hutchisons drop in an visit famous UK breeder-trainer Nick Savva on a trip to the UK. Gavin told us there was a bitch Nick had that would suit Australia and he might be willing to sell her, so we headed off to tempt Nick top part with Westar Dance a daughter of Curryhills Gara and the Irish Derby winning bitch The Other Toss, said John. It was at that time that John and Wendy saw the fastest dog they have ever seen race. It was at Walthamstow and we were guests of Nick who had a young dog called The (March, 2006) Journal Page 14

John's come back to greyhounds... the Qld way Larkhill Jo racing that night at either his first or second race start, said John. He won by 15 lengths and ran just.05 off the track record. I tried to buy him, but Nick was not parting with him. He became a superstar and a really great sire. When John and Wendy got home to Melbourne, Savva rang back and said they could buy Westar Dance. She came to Australia and when trained by Robbie Britton won several races. At stud she was a goldmine, producing three litters with some outstanding dogs from her litter by Just The Best. Westar Return ran a track record at Cannington, Westar Sparkle and Westar Supreme were all top class. The bitches from Westar Dance now form the basis of John and Wendy s greyhound racing future. But along the way they have not been frightened to buy a smart dog. Renzo Ferrari was bought from Sarah Pringle and developed into a top grader at The Meadows. I even offered $45,000 for Big Smig when he was a youngster with the idea of sending him to Ireland to contest their Derby, said John. He would have been a sensation over there. About 14 months ago, John and Wendy decided they d had enough of the cold in Victoria and moved to Pallara on Brisbane s outskirts, buying a four acre property previously owned by Mick Lindsay. We brought a lot of average grade five dogs from Melbourne up with us and quickly realized they were average grade five dogs up here as well, he said. The depth of fields in Victoria are better, six of the eight runners having great chances, but in Queensland it is more like three or four of the eight runners with chances. John left behind a stint of four years on the committee at The Meadows, two of those as vice-chairman. The Meadows is one of the most prestigious clubs in Australia and are extremely progressive, he said. The move to Saturday night racing has been wonderfully successful. The club spent plenty of money, employed its own chef and now the place is packed for dinner every Saturday night. John is proud of the fact he helped revamp the Australian Cup carnival with the inclusion of such feature events at The Temlee, Rookie Rebel etc. And for two years he helped produce the successful radio program At The Boxes on Sport 927 which involved The Meadows popular CEO Marg Long and Geoff Collins. It s something that is long overdue in Queensland, said Hutchison. We found it gave owners and trainers a profile they had not been able to achieve before that. It lifted the profile of the sport. Hutchison has been in Brisbane since March last year and knows there are a myriad of ways to improve the industry here, specially at Albion Park. Everyone seems to have given up at Albion Park, he said. They obviously believe they can t get people there so why try. Hutchison reeled off a number of simple ideas he had to counter this. And one thing I have noticed in the industry in Queensland, there is no young people coming through with dogs. It s something we have to do something about and quickly, he said. Greyhound racing, with the exception of Melbourne and Perth, seems to have lost a generation or two in all states. He sees the urgent need for a young committee at Albion Park. It costs $25 to become a member at The Meadows each year and for that each member FOR SALE GREYHOUND PROPERTY (New, never been lived in) Upstairs: large bedroom, built-in robe, toilet and shower, carpeted. 17 ABOVE: Hndler Steve Boody and smart Townsville bitch Gorgas. LEFT: Ken and Steve Boody and owner Brett Oliver after a recent victory by Gorgas. Cairns Post pics. Gorgas heads Boody plan for A COUPLE of years ago then Mackay based Ken Boody, his dad Steve, and his workmate Brett Oliver decided to get a greyhound together. The initial venture wasn t much good, so they went looking for a pup. It was hard to go past a South Australian-bred Token Prince-True Angel bitch they saw advertised in a southern newspaper. The dam had already produced two finalists in Group races, and the breeder wanted only $2500 for her and included delivery to Brisbane. She was 12 weeks old and her dam had won 17 of her first 19 race starts, said Boody. And two of her previous litter had been Group finalists. Cathy Gordon reared the white and fawn bitch at Coominya Lodge and she then headed over to Boody family friend Tom Noble to be educated. Tom had her for six months and even brought her up north when he was on his annual Cup carnival trip late last year, said Ken. But the bitch did not race, Noble deciding to educate her around the northern tracks. Now named Gorgas, she had broken in well and he thought she would develop into a handy galloper. We had her in one night at Ipswich but two races before her race, the lure broke down and the rest of the meeting was called off, said Ken Boody. We decided to bring her up north for some low grade races. Gorgas has since become one of the most promising young gallopers in the north having already won a 410m Young Guns series in Cairns and putting together an impressive strike rate. The Boodys have been a racing family for many years. Dad had greyhounds on and off for 20 years, said Ken. I started only about six years ago. Last year the Boodys decided to sell up in Mackay and move to a 23-acre property at Black River near Townsville. It has registered kennels, a straight track and bull ring and suits us perfectly, said Ken. It s so tough to train dogs properly from a house block. Ken now has eight in training and Gorgas is easily the best, so much so that she is already earmarked for a trip back to Tom Noble in the future for a campaign in the south. Gorgas was named by Steve Boody after Sir William Gorgas who found a cure for yellow fever. Dad reasoned that Sir William Gorgas did great things, so this bitch might follow him, said Ken. Steve does most of the work with the Boody team at Black River while Ken works during the day. Gorgas is already destined for a breeding future. She s so well bred, said Ken. And her breeder Ben Murphy has been keeping a close watch on her progress up here. He recently rang and asked to buy some bitches out of her when she goes to stud. This litter had only two pups a dog and this bitch. Gorgas is from the famed South Leaders for the past 16 years in the Collection, Storage and Insemination of Frozen Semen to the Greyhound Racing Industry Manly Road Vet Phone (07) Australian damline of True Shadow. 20 Bruce Teague COPYRIGHT OR COPYWRONG? RACING NSW CEO, Peter V landys, rambunctious as ever, is now hell-bent on using copyright laws to restrict access to thoroughbred race fields. That would cut out what V Landys calls pirates and plunderers in the form of the Northern Territory corporate bookmakers, as well as Betfair. He reasons that would force their customers back to their traditional hunting grounds on racetracks and in TAB outlets. No doubt the lawyers will profit from the forthcoming debates, including a threatened defamation case from NT bookie Mark Read, just as they have in the SKY v TVN squabble, also generated on V Landys watch (see July 2005 Journal). But will it help racing? One of several possibilities is that the establishment could win the battle but lose the war. A Sydney Morning Herald article (Dec 29) made some telling points about copyright history. First, the installation of photocopiers in libraries in the 1960s and 1970s led to a lot more copying of copyrighted material. Publishers of serious or academic journals were especially dismayed. But later studies revealed the new service also led to much greater sales of those same journals. Those most sought after were those that were copied the most. Then in the 1980s Hollywood warned that the unfettered use of those newfangled VCRs would be the death of the film industry. Today, despite piracy problems, film producers make more money from sales of videos and DVDs than they ever did from selling cinema tickets. Just the other day I heard singer Janis Ian tell ABC radio she started offering free music on her website because she wanted more people to hear what she does. That move generated even greater purchases of other items so she now makes more money. More generally, a succession of expensive and over-complex Microsoft programs has attracted criticism and prompted a great deal of piracy. This is partly why computer software has moved towards free or open-source products, at least at the entry level (internet browsers and Adobe Acrobat Reader, for example). The SMH article was primarily about book publishers taking the wealthy Google organisation to court because it s now in the process of copying every book on the planet and making them available on its website. If history is any guide that will help booksellers and authors, not hinder them. That s still up for debate but, personally, I have found it hard to curl up on the couch with a good computer. Meanwhile, I would have thought the best way to promote racing would be to make it as easy as possible to learn more about it. And just imagine how racing might have profited if all the energy put into battling rebellious bookies had gone instead into chasing new customers. Keeping secrets is hard to do in the Internet age. Sensibly, four greyhound States now make fields and at least basic form details freely available. NSW (again!) is the major holdout but it is thinking about it. To misquote Samuel Johnson - copyright is becoming the last refuge of the scoundrel. PRINCIPLE OR DOGMA? Hong Kong, that bastion of competition and private enterprise, even under communist rule, is not quite so free and easy when it comes to horse racing. Apart from controlling who works where and for how long, the Hong Kong Jockey Club is also in charge of all betting and it vehemently opposes Betfair. Virtual Formguide/AAP reports it fears backing a horse to lose... threatens the whole principle of the sport. But what principle is that? The logic of this mantra has always escaped me. In the days when there were a few more bookies around it was common for a friend to supply a grand or two to one with whom he had a good relationship - nominating a runner to lay at a bit over the odds. What you will still hear today are different bookies coming up with different opinions on a horse or dog. Newspapers regularly quote their favourite bookmaker s lay of the day. Some bookies will let you back the field against the favourite, which obviously means you expect it to lose. In other words, backing a runner to lose is routine. Bookies themselves do it every day when they take on a big punter. Two blokes in the street do it when they have a side bet on a football match. So does anyone betting on a sporting event at the TAB. The logic has also escaped British The (March, 2006) Journal Page 20 The most powerful argument countering the critics of betting exchanges is that the product offered is appealing to and demanded by consumers. Betting exchanges are successful primarily because they offer an innovative, secure and high-value gambling product. Even the most vocal critics of betting exchanges concede this point. The Allen Consulting Group report to the Commonwealth Government authorities who can inspect a local website offering to tip you the greyhound lays of the day. They have also welcomed Betfair s ability to provide betting audit trails, something the TABs can t do but which thoroughbred stewards in Victoria have tried unsuccessfully to latch on to (Betfair refused them as Racing Victoria would not sign a privacy agreement). The commercial value of Betfair is another subject but the integrity argument being pounded out by the Hong Kong club and by Australian gallops chiefs is so phoney you wonder how they think they can get away with it. Unfortunately, many casual readers believe that stuff. Not so The Allen Consulting Group, in an independent report to the Commonwealth for the review of interactive gambling in 2003, where it stated such activities (as backing a runner to lose) have been possible to varying degrees for a long time, particularly in horse racing. Back in Hong Kong, the clincher comes when you find that following a drop in turnover the club has temporarily reduced its takeout from the usual 17.5% down to 10% for win-place-quinella bets. Apparently illegal operators have been pinching too much business and HKJC wants to get it back. However, there s no change to the whopping 25% it takes from more complex bet types because the illegal people don t have the practical means of offering them. Authorities in Australia and Hong Kong are avoiding the real problem. In mature markets, effective takeout rates of 16% to 25% for various bet types, on top of a never-ending string of rules and regulations, have two effects. First, they make it difficult for genuine punters to make profits and instead force racing to rely more on mug gamblers who don t know the odds. Second, they make low-takeout options like Betfair, sports betting, poker machines and even on-line poker games look much more attractive. Racing has made a rod for its own back. That s why wagering has experienced a long and continuing loss of market share in both Hong Kong and Australia. This phenomenon is not limited to racing. The same thing happened to many of the world s oldest airlines, several retail chains and a string of car manufacturers, including the once-mighty General Motors, now desperately trying to avoid bankruptcy - they got too expensive, they offered the wrong products and they did not move with the times. Now they have either disappeared or they are in big trouble.

By DAVID BRASCH IT S been more than 30 years since Joe Cavanagh trained a greyhound... but in the meantime he s had some of the best dogs seen in the state. How can that be, you may ask. Joe, who is 61 this year, got his first dog in 1969 and at one stage soon after was training a team of 12. But since 1973, Joe has left the training of the dogs he has owned to someone else... usually his great friend John Reimer. And the combination of Cavanagh-Reimer has produced more than its fair share of top flight gallopers. But Joe is back training. He has bred a litter, and has three of them in work. And as he nears retirement, he admits he s loving every minute as a trainer. Cavanagh has lived most of his life in the Ipswich area. In 1969 he bought a bitch called Joely s Choice from top local greyhound man Ross Spencer. She didn t win a race, but unfortunately for me I had the choice of two from the litter, and the other one, a dog called Big Magic, held a track record at the old Capalaba track and started hot favourite for a Lawnton Cup, Joe told The Journal. I can t remember if he won or finished second in the Cup. It was pretty obvious Joe Cavanagh would get involved in greyhound racing. Right from a kid, I can remember helping out Bill Maguire with his dogs. He lived over the back fence from my family. Joely s Choice might not have won a race but she ran a few placings and got Joe hooked in the industry. I took up training and at one stage had up to 12 dogs in work based at Booval, at the back of Bundamba racecourse, he said. Guys like Graham Heaton and Viv Illingsworth had dogs in the area at the time. Racing in those days was at Lawnton, Beenleigh, Capalaba on the old track and at Tweed. When night racing started up, Joe reckons the industry here was not forward enough to benefit from it. Dogs in Queensland were bred for sheer speed, and not to run 558 metres, he said. And trainers here never had to prepare their dogs for constant 558m racing. The bloodlines of the local dogs did not cater for such racing. Joe reckons that, more than anything, was why southerners could easily come north with second raters and win at the Gabba. The Gabba totally changed greyhound racing in this state. While the Gabba started in 1972, Joe was retired from training by I went into business in the takeaway food and catering business and eventually by 1985 I was managing hotels, firstly at Peak Crossing and then Nobby on the Downs, he Walloon, Ipswich Where good rearing doesn t cost, it pays. By 1991 he went nursing at Wolston Park psychiatric hospital, switched back to the pubs again, but has been back at the hospital, now called The Park, as unit manager. But in the meantime, he has not for a day been without a greyhound at home mostly as pets, but more often than not rearing pups of his own to head down to John Reimer s kennel. In 1985 while at Nobby, he formed a syndicate of mates and bought a pup that raced as Royal Venture. By Royal Rumpus from Melbourne Cup winner Rustic Venture, she was to be a breeding goldmine. Ted O Connell and I were in the syndicate and eventually we put her to Bogenfel and from that litter got Haylewie Miss, Our Blue Chip, Bogan Venture, Keeping Royal and Purga Peak Miss, said Joe. Purga Peak Miss raced for Joe. I trained her for a very short time in 1990, but asked John Reimer to take her over and he got her to the final of the 1991 Coca-Cola Cup at the Gabba, he said. She s also the last winner I have trained. Purga Peak Miss, under Reimer s guidance, won a host of races at the Gabba and was successful when racing switched to Albion Park. Unfortunately she dropped a back muscle. She was a perfect broodbitch replacement for Royal Venture. In the meantime Joe and his mate Peter Smith raced Lucky Gordon together and he was a prolific winner but had the misfortune to run into Flying Amy more often than not. When Purga Peak Miss went to stud her first litter was to import Balligari* and Joe ended up with the brilliant Vergari. One of the fastest sprinters of her time, she was a prolific Albion Park winner for the Cavanagh/Reimer connection. Upon retirement Joe was looking forward to many great litters from the bitch. But Joe stayed with greyhound racing. He bought Private Label and Reimer won 19 races with the bitch including 17 at Albion Park. From Our Blue Chip came Sheena s Gold, winner of 13 races with 11 of those at Albion Park. It keepd Joe going. Of course I ve had a heap that didn t even make the track, but mostly we ve been lucky, he said. Those that won t make it here go to my mate John McNamara at Proserpine. 22 Gary Clark New South Wales THE Entertainer is no more. Townsville trainer Evelyn Gough s long-time favourite greyhound Downtown Dixie died recently after a race and performing career that spanned 13 years. She was a high class provincial galloper who won Versatility Series in Mackay and Ayr as well as races at most country centres along the Queensland coast., 16 wins in all. But upon retirement, Dixie became an entertainer. Evelyn would dress her in party attire and she would entertain at provincial tracks on Cup nights and specially at Christmas. It wasn t long after she retired that I tried a Santa hat on her and she made no fuss, said Evelyn. One more piece of attire and eventually Dixie was in costume, eventually dressing as a reindeer, antlers an all, and pulling a sleigh at Christmas celebrations at many of the north Queensland tracks. We could do anything with her, said Evelyn. She loved it, loved the attention and specially loved the kids who flocked to her at these times. Dixie was raced by Jim and Jan Green of Rockhampton, but she lived with Evelyn all her career, both on and off the track. 40 acres at Churchable Rearing Spelling Education available Galloping paddocks 2 x 5 acres 3 x 3 acres Holding yards 40m x 40m Whelping Pens Puppy Yards Spelling Yards A top grade dog has come from every litter we have reared FROM the coastal setting of Nowra to the inner town of Coombell near Casino may not seem the ideal move but it is one NSW trainer Brett Hastie had to make. After 10 years of racing greyhounds, Hastie was going nowhere on the South Coast and the attraction to get closer to Queensland was a temptation he could not resist. Out in the back of nowhere is how Hastie describes Coombell, but his property is perfect for greyhounds. He has been there eight months with the plan intention to develop the complex into a professional outfit, rearing pups, training racing dogs and standing stud dogs. I have spent $60,000 on a new kennel block which I have only just finished and the past few weeks have been a nightmare, Hastie said. I have lost three pups due to tiger snakes and believe it or not I killed 15 snakes in one day. He had a neighbor problem back on the South Coast, which is a regular story in greyhound racing and elected to move north to also have the chance to race more in Queensland due to the better grading system. I have a number of youngsters that are well bred but keep breaking down while I have 12 beautiful History Lesson puppies, he said. Hastie s first winner came back in 1995 at Nowra with Hannan Banner who went onto to win five races and his first as a trainer was at Cowra with Silver Nedra. His best dog so far has been top sprinter Heaps Better. Hastie is full of praise for muscle man Gary Barnsley who he misses greatly. If only I could bring him up here, he was a large part of my success, he said. And how did he learn the trade... full praise to Victorian trainer Darren McDonald. You can talk to him like a bloke in the street, always helpful and full of knowledge, Hastie explained. His property, named Canyon Kennels, Noble Park Now run by Mick and Amber Boody Ph (07) or BRETT HASTIE currently stands three stud dogs, J s Jon Henry, Nailed and Paua Machine with a likely addition soon. He was given both Nailed and J s John Henry from previous studs while friend, Steve White who raced Paua Machine, offered Hastie the opportunity in the dog s first year. Paua Machine is a litter brother to Paua To Burn, a dual Group 1 winner. Paua Machine broke the Nowra track record, ran a near record at Richmond, and is being offered for FREE for a short time. Nailed is a proven sire with winners in three states including Kinda Devilish, Realon Blue and Kinda Tempting. While J s John Henry, the American sire, has had recent matings with the brilliant but unpredictable, Brilliant Style, Vipers View, Dr Lowball, a classic finalist, and Dr Jessica. It s a big gamble to set up a racing complex in a new area but Hastie has the right stock from youngsters to stud dogs. Don t accept your dog s admiration as conclusive evidence that you are wonderful The (March, 2006) Journal Page 22

Andrew Thomson Victoria Letter to the Editor Dear Sir, BALLARAT owner Darren Murray and trainer Cameron Taylor are enjoying the ride of their lives. The dynamic duo have Melbourne Cup winner Closing Argument and Warragul Cup victor Vapour Whirl firing in the leadup to the Australian Cup. Vapour Whirl won the Warragul Cup in a sensational and has picked up 15 wins from 25 starts. His other best winning times include the Meadows 29.74, Geelong 25.60, Healesville 18.61, Horsham 27.13, Warrnambool and he finished third in the Cranbourne Cup behind Pororoca in track record time. Murray rates Vapour Whirl the quicker of his kennel stars. I ve had a lot of good dogs over the years but never had two in the kennel this quick at the one time, he said. It s also interesting that both sprinters are not by highly fashionable sired, Closing Argument by Exceptional and Vapour Whirl by Ashigga. Murray said Closing Argument trialled between races at Ballarat in the lead- up to the Australian Cup. The chances of one of them winning the Australian Cup would have to be enormous, he said. They can both break at the Meadows and there s not that many who can do that. "Vapour Whirl is faster than any dog I ve had but Closing Argument is a better race dog because he just begins every time. Murray said Taylor only had 10 greyhounds in work with about 15 pups coming through. He said he believed the key to the Exceptional pups were letting them mature before they were broken-in. I ve got a few more coming through who are going all right and they ll win races, he said. You have to give them time to grow up or you can break them down. I think an awful lot of them haven t been given the opportunities they needed to show their best. You need to leave them until they re at least 15 or 16 months. Murray said Vapour Whirl was out of a sister to former smart sprinter Jimmy Neutron while Closing Argument went back to Queensland s Sheza Nightmare line. Murray previously trained Brayden Shiraz which briefly held the Sale track record before later breaking both hocks. Closing Argument is out of a sister to Brayden Shiraz, he said. She raced in Darwin and I managed to get her back. She won a dozen races and I thought on her breeding she was worth a try. "Sheza Nightmare just knocked up throwing winners and that line is continuing on now, he said. In reference to the article in the February Journal on James Heddles, I would like to point out the situation with regards to Hareeba Ghost. I owned the greyhound and leased the dog to Heddles. The dog later was the subject of a stewards inquiry and stewards ordered the lease be cancelled. Hareeba Ghost returned to my kennels and then won four more races for us and was placed a number of times. Yours faithfully Rex Marshall The (March, 2006) Journal Page 23

The Quick FIX!!! The past few months have consistently seen the Gold Coast, Albion Park and Ipswich clubs having to extend the normal nomination closing times in an endeavor to fill their programs. The simple answer as to why this is happening is that there is a smaller pool of dogs available to fill the clubs programs. Why, you may ask, is there a smaller pool of dogs available? The answer lies within the historical decisions made by the industry over the years. Ray Burman GBOTA News 1 Closure of Lawnton. The closure of Lawnton killed off a large percentage of the northside trainers. 2 Closure of Toowoomba. The closure of this track killed off a large percentage of the Toowoomba trainers. 3 Closure of Beenleigh. Once again the closure of this track killed off a large percentage of the trainers in this area. 4 Cancellation of QBIS. The breeding industry is, by best reports, down 30%. This can be primarily attributed to the abandonment of the Breeding Scheme. The situation can be fixed if there is willingness by the administration to work with the industry to put a plan in place for its survival. The administration cannot fix the industry without the licensees and likewise the licensees cannot fix the industry without the administration. It must be a TEAM effort. I challenge the GRA to meet with the licensees in a structured open forum to outline their plans for the industry and get some feedback from the licensees for the survival of the industry. Marketing Committee The introduction of the earlier treble races and the Monday night maiden races being put back to races nine and 10 does not appear to be working at this stage, although it is still early days yet. This association is particularly concerned at the maiden races being programmed so late and questions why they could not be programmed as races five and six as is the case at Ipswich. It is hoped the suggestion of one of the members of the Marketing Committee to close down the industry for a month will not be adopted by the GRA. I would think the owners and trainers who rely on the industry for an income would not be too pleased with this suggestion. Zukked Connections of Zuko must have been disappointed they were wrongly graded as a 5th grade dog and then disqualified after winning. The disappointments would have turned to smiles after the GRA did the only honorable thing and paid the connections the first prizemoney. The rules should be changed to ensure this never happens again. Trainers should be allowed to protest the grading of a dog, however, this should only be allowed prior to the race and not after the race is run. Beenleigh The trial track at Beenleigh closed at the end of January. Efforts to keep the track open by this Association have not been successful. The cost of repairs, maintenance, water and Public Liability insurance would exceed the income from trials by a large amount. It would not be a viable concern to keep the track open without the financial support of Kirsty O'Brien the GRA. Vale Beenleigh. Next Meeting The next meeting of the QGBOTA will be held at Albion Park on March 6 starting at 6pm. Membership The membership of the Association continues to grow. We now have well over 100 members. We need your support to get a bigger say in the direction of the industry. Membership costs are $15 for family membership and $10 for single membership. It was Sam, or better known under his racing name of You Idiot (below with Kirsty). To racegoers he was the dog who won 24 of his 63 race starts and raised more than $30,000 for a cancer charity in Victoria. He was adopted by the AFL Footy Show and all Victoria followed his race career. But Sam was much more than a racing greyhound. At three and a half years old he was given to Kirsty O Brien for all the help she had given the Greyhound Adoption Program in Victoria. Sam joined Kirsty a few years ago when she came north as GAP coordinator in Queensland. Sam was far from a couch potato. I taught him obedience and agility and he was by my side at just about every greyhound.racing and GAP promotion I ve been to since, said Kirsty. And that was one promotion in just about every two weeks since I got him in That tallies to more than 150 public appearances for Sam. He had the perfect temperament. Two-year-olds would climb all over him, he tolerated all other dog breeds and for a long time shared his home with a cat, said Kirsty. Sam was diagnosed with a tumor in his chest recently and vet advice was that he should not suffer. He was humanely put down. As we said, greyhound racing, the GAP program, but especially Kirsty O Brien, have lost one of their foremost ambassadors. The (March, 2006) Journal Page 24

Secretary's Notes MACKAY THE club will resume racing on March 23 after a three-week break due to maintenance on the track and lures. This will see greyhound racing every week now until the end of May with an extra on Monday April 10 to make up for meetings that were postponed. There will be a twilight meeting on Easter Saturday (April 15), to coincide with the gallops (Doncaster) and the Golden Easter Egg on Saturday night. Mackay has programmed the Presidents Cup for the twilight meeting for the Best 8 over 541m. This will be followed by the heats of the Maiden 1000 and Mackay Cup on April 22 and then the Final of both on April 29. The Mackay Cup this year will be over 541m. Then in May we will see the heats and final of the North Qld Intercity Challenge over 456m with the grand final being held in Rockhampton on May 25. This race is sponsored by the The Brook Group and GRA and is in its second year. IPSWICH Owners and Trainers with graduates from the 2004 Puppy Auction you are reminded that nominations for both rounds of heats for race one of the two series close on March 30 with the GRA. The scheduling of both rounds of heats will depend on the number of nominations received. When nominating trainers are ask to indicate their preferred heat night. Further details relating to the series can be found in our advertisement in this Journal or by contacting the club. By the time this is published, the final of Australia s richest maiden series would have been run and won. In the heats and semi finals a number of future potential stars were unearthed. This continues the reputation of the race as Australia s nursery of Stars. Thank you to our sponsors, Highland Smash Repair, for their continued support. If you need any repairs to your vehicles remember to give them the opportunity. We encourage industry to support businesses who support us. A major industry issue is the dramatic increase in short course racing compared to 520 metre racing. Is it a breeding issue, training techniques, race programming or a convenience issue? We would be interested in your comments. Feel free to write, or discuss this issue with a committee member. CAPALABA We are progressing slowly with the plan to have exhibition drag lure coursing events. Paul Felgate will be schooling some greyhounds and eventually theses will be involved in exhibition gallops at Capalaba on race days. These exhibitions will be advertised when we are ready to start. The John Klose Retravision Series continues to be successful and will be expanded to 8 heats and 8 finals if nominations allow. Now that the cooler months will be upon us soon it is hoped that we can return to the large quantity of nominations we enjoyed at a similar time last year. The club will run a best 16 Easter Bunny Girl series over Easter. It will be for the best 16 bitches in any grade and will carry good prizemoney for the heats and finals. Townsville-based Olsen always thought bones would be an ideal part of a greyhounds diet. He approached the boys at his local butchers and asked to buy the bone dust that gathers around the saw blade when butchers cut meat. The boys call it bone dust, but it includes fat and meat as well as the dust from cutting through the bones, Olsen told The Journal. Health regulations prevent a butcher selling the bone dust, but Danny Mittereger and Jamie Dimitrievski from Wulgura Meat Mart get around that by giving it to Olsen for nothing. The fact I drop up there once a month and leave a carton of beer is appreciated at the butcher shop, he said. So while rearing the November Fury- Absolute Chaos litter, one of the pups, a fawn dog, was reared on a quarter of a pound of roo meat, a pound of bone dust and his normal kibble. The others in the litter got only a few ounces of the bone dust, said Olsen. That fawn pup grew into a magnificent 36.5kg dog of explosive speed. And his racing name naturally had to be Bone Dust. To time of writing, Bone Dust has started 12 times for 10 wins and a recent impressive Young Guns victory at Townsville stamped him the most exciting young galloper in the north. Since being put into work, Olsen has cut the bone dust in the dog s diet back to just a few ounces. It s been an experiment that worked wonders. And who were the greatest broodbitch sires? Undoubtedly the same name will come up... BYAMEE. Coursing was the original greyhound sport... two dogs slipped together in pursuit of a hare. In every state the highlight of the coursing season was the running of the Waterloo Cup. The Victorian Waterloo Cup had a long history going back to In the years before 1953 only six greyhounds had been able to win the event twice. All were considered champions, Rhodanthe (1883 and 85), Bloomer (1893 and 94), Ella Goldsmith (1908 and 10), Brown Hawk (1916 and 17), Father s Footsteps (1930 and 31) and Kreuger (1934 and 35). Byamee was to win the Victorian Waterloo Cup a record three times! In 1953, as a puppy, he divided the Victorian St Leger with his sister Rarcamba and then took on the older dogs in the Waterloo Cup at Bendigo. He performed brilliantly through the event and defeated True Scamper in the final. The following year the Cup was conducted at Tynong. Once again Byamee dominated and won the final against Gallant Plume. In 1955 the Cup was staged at Maryborough and a large crowd gathered to see if Byamee could create history. He didn t disappoint, completing a unique hat-trick with victory over Wanalta Chief in the final. Byamee s owner, Ray Herbert, was a legend in sport. His wins included six Victorian Waterloo Cups, three NSW Waterloo Cups, three Victorian Derbies and three NSW Oaks. Apart from Byamee, his most famous greyhounds were Silver Chief, Some Laddie, Orion, Ariki, Ever Dandy, Karween, Coonega, Yarloop, Menang and Tarryhere. Byamee (Yarloop-Tarryhere, by Silver Chief) had a very interesting pedigree and one that is testament to the great influence Ray Herbert had on the breed. Herbert owned both his sire Yarloop and his dam dam Tarryhere. He also owned Yarloop s sire, Menang and dam Moonshine Maid as well as Moonshine Maid s parents Grey Friar and My Lady. Herbert bred Grey Friar (Kreuger-Silvermane), a half brother to his champion, Silver Chief (by Pharminda) who also appears in Byamee s pedigree as the maternal grand-sire. The most striking aspect of Byamee s pedigree is that linebreeding to Silvermane and Pharminda, both 4x3 crosses. Silvermane s brother Cliff s Pride also appears in the top half of the pedigree giving a 5x5x4 cross to both parents, Cubby and Shady Burn. It is probably one of the best examples of the Rasmussen Factor at work. i.e. linebreeding to a bitch, or in this case two bitches, Silvermane and Shady Burn. There was a lot of quality in Byamee s damline. His mother Tarryhere (Silver Chief- Lassalla) was an outstanding coursing bitch winning the 1949 Victorian Waterloo Cup and dividing the 1948 NSW Waterloo Cup. She was also the dam of the influential broodbitches Luckyhere and Rarcamba. Luckyhere was the dam of champion courser Merrileigh Prince (1959 Victorian Derby, 1960 Victorian Waterloo Cup) and Oakleigh Here who divided the 1956 SA Oaks. Oakleigh Here bred on and can be found behind many fine performers such as Sonny s Windfall, Chukka Khan, Swanston Roi, Condominium, Cool It Pop and Melmade Gazza. She also appears in the damline of Suemara, a line which has been very successful for Neville Robson with representatives like He s Allegro, Spirited Copy, Genuine Scandal, Go Series, Blue Series, Kapalga, True Boy, Allegro Jet, Blue Pisces, Cadency King, Hot Treasure, Cruz Pro and Sottie Allover. Rarcamba s daughter Trail View made a mark on South Australia s coursing classics with the success of progeny such as Civic Bev, Civic Topsy, Civic View, Proud Paddy and Civic Sunbeam. Tarryhere s mother Lassalla (Quanialla- Percyton Lass) also produced Okere (1949 NSW Oaks) and the good performer Nerinyerie who bobs up in some good pedigrees through his daughters, e.g. China Lane (grand-dam of Thunder Lane). Lassalla was a sister to some top class greyhounds including Percyton Lad (1943 SA Derby) who became one of the most successful coursing sires in the history of the sport. Byamee s sire Yarloop (Menang- Moonshine Maid) was best known for winning the Melbourne Cup on the speed coursing track at Napier Park. Although probably considered just a handy sire overall, Yarloop also sired the outstanding bitch Karween who the 1950 NSW Waterloo Cup, 1948 NSW Coursing Oaks, 1949 Woodstock Cup, divided the 1948 Victorian Waterloo Cup and ran up in that same event in At the time Byamee was retired to stud, mechanical lure racing was about to begin in Victoria. Byamee had been a great champion on the coursing fields but there was a query over whether his pups would adapt to the mechanical lure or if they would be just coursing greyhounds. Consequently he didn t receive as many bitches as he might have in an earlier era and was represented by just 102 litters. At stud Byamee sired Copeland (1961 Australian Cup at North Melbourne), Dalemee (1961 Ballarat Cup), My Riant (1956 Victorian Coursing Oaks), Slippermee (1959 Bendigo Cup), The Jink, Bogamee, Gay Gambler and Cheetham Lad. It was a fair return but it gave no indication of the impact that Byamee would have when the progeny of his daughters appeared on the track. The most famous of Byamee s daughters was Byam Rose, one of Australia s greatest broodbitches. Her progeny included Saskaview (1963 Melbourne Cup (Spk), 1963 Anniversary Hdcp (Opk), 1963 Sandown 500, TR Wentworth Park 580y, Olympic Park 560m), The Stripper (1964 Australian C ship (Hpk),1963 Holiday Hdcp (Spk), TR Sandown Park 565y), Sungari (1960 and 1961 Sandown 500, TR North Melbourne 425y), Saskagay (1962 Melbourne Cup (Spk)), Pine Mulga (1960 Puppy C ship at North Melbourne, TR Sandown Park 565y), Harem Belle (1965 Wangaratta Cup, TR Harold Park 500y), Fast Talk (TR Sandown Park 785y) and the classy sprinter Bandar Prince who sired the champion, The Smoother. Saskaview, The Stripper, Sungari and Pine Mulga all had success at stud although they weren t represented by large numbers of litters. The Byam Rose damline has continued to breed on. Stars like Pretty Fearless, Lord Tegimi, Hot Spell, Worth Backing and Ding s Wonder were from this line while recently Traction Control, Jennev, Rare Aussie and Mr Faithful have kept the flag flying. Bylane (Byamee-Belinda Jane) was the dam of the outstanding sprinter Fawn Nulla The (March, 2006) Journal Page 26

Spotlight on Breeding (who won the 1967 Australian Cup and twice ran record time over the 560y at Olympic Park), Spartan Prince (1967 Silver Chief (Opk) and Nulla View (TR Olympic Park 560y, 800y). Vanadium, Marajax, Tashina Boy and Gyprock Bob are among the many good dogs who trace back to Bylane. Byasta (Byamee-Rocket City) was the dam of Bybrae (1961 Melbourne Cup), Amasta (1965 Geelong Cup), Chacile (1965 Spring Tphy (Wpk)) and Rookon who the 1960 Christmas Gift at North Melbourne. This line has been quiet in recent years but produced the Victorian Greyhound Of The Year, Leader s Jester. Mee Do (Byamee-Crescent Lass) was the dam of Worthing (1965 Australian Cup, TR Olympic Park 560y), Chief Anama (1965 Bendigo Cup) and Glenda Gale (TR Sandown Park 555m). Worthing became the sire of champions, Half Your Luck and He s Some Boy while Glenda Gale was the dam of Plunder Road (by Nulla View), winner of the 1969 Silver Chief (Opk), 1969 Charity Sprint C ship (Opk), 1970 Hobart Thousand and the 1969 Victorian St Leger, a coursing classic. His pedigree contained a 3x3 cross of Byamee. Mee Do can be found behind Ultravana, Serious Girl, Daring Coup, Striving Dream, Tasben Star and One More Squeeze. Gay Gambler (Byamee-Tiny City) was the dam of Bristol Fashion who won the1967 ANZGA Cup and Gambling King who divided the same event in Their sister Gambler s Glow can be found in the damline behind many of South Australia s top greyhounds such as True To Do and Wotta Wizard. Makino (Byamee-Magenta) was best known as the dam of Secretly who the 1965 Dapto Silver Collar and became famous as a broodbitch. She was the dam of Gemini Todd, Sandy Shane, Secret Tiv, Shantony and William Todd and can be found behind many outstanding dogs such as Dusty Rapid, Little Blade, Pretty Short, Rustic Venture, Kim s Monaro, Bjorn, Haylewie Miss, etc. Another good producing daughter of Makino was Princess Johnbarr, who appears in the damline of Little Vaino, Michael s Gift and Raging Rajah. Gay Harbor (Byamee-Tiny City) was the dam of Favourite Girl, the 1965 Farrells Tphy winner at Bulli who became the mother of Harold Park star, Sammie Sparrow (1968 Vic Peters Memorial, 1968 Dave Alexander, 1969 Christmas Gift). Lady Kapeen (Byamee-Kapeen) was the dam of Siyar (1964 Holiday Hdcp (Spk) and Misspelt, the mother of Sue Narila (1968 Hobart Thousand, 1967 Dapto Thousand) who became the dam of Thunder Sue (1973 Ladies Bracelet (Hpk), 1973 Surf Life Savers Greyhound Data Greyhound breeders should be aware of the value of the fantastic website produced by Gunnar von Boehn in Stuttgart, Germany. Gay Cope (Byamee-Blue Cope) was the dam of New Chan (1965 Holiday Hdcp (Spk)) while Dalemee (Byamee-Armadale) was the mother of Pablo Star who saluted in the 1964 running of the Holiday Hdcp. Beatnik (Byamee-Tiny City) was the dam of the broodbitches Young Cinnamon and Sun City. Young Cinnamon s line has been to the fore recently through some top class progeny out of Miss Gypsy including Amaroo Gift, Our Barney, Jay Aye Mick, Junior s Gypsy, Regal Bazz and Regal Tiger. The Sun City line has thrown some outstanding greyhounds such as The Little Gent, Friendly Flyer, Jenny s Legacy, Mandarin Girl, Bogie Leigh, Awesome Assassin, Isa Brown, Tarmoor Eagle, Dashing Disco, Gerard The Gent, Fritz Mactavish and Shelley O Reilly. Phillorna (Byamee-Rocket City) was the dam of Lady Cecelia who was the mother of Kewin (1965 Winter Stake (Hpk), 1965 Sunkist Cup (Opk), 1966 New Year Hdcp (Spk)). This line continues through Joint Mission (1995 Sir John Dillon Memorial (Spk)) whose progeny includes Better Than Best and Samette. Philaurie (Byamee-Rocket City) was the dam of Romany Royal who was the mother of the brilliant Princess Kerry (1968 National Sprint C ship (Spk), 1968 Holiday Stake (Spk), 1968 Olympic Park C ship). Princess Kerry (by Saskaview) had a 3x3 cross of Byamee. She was also a top broodbitch with progeny likecount d Argent, Flying Claude, August Night, Miller s Jester and Monaco Prince. By Express (Byamee-L eau Riant) was the dam of Lurex who appears behind Chevron Lass, Plain Winnie, My Chief s Rusty, Robert, National Vain, Supreme Vain, Dakota Emily and Kayla Dakota. Triplight (Byamee-Lillico) was the dam of Cullya Miss who threw Silent Retreat (1969 Winter Stak, TR Temora 500y) and Banner Maid who appears behind many of the outstanding Pringle breed of the past 30 years such as Tara Flash, Carnival Melody, Promises Free, West Cape, Amerigo Man, Miss Limit, Eat Your Words, etc. Penna Mee (Byamee-Gof Harbour) was the dam of Byamenang who appears behind Mum s Ruby, New Julie, Lauraville, Pixieville and Hay Dinney. One of the most interesting aspects of the success of Byamee as a broodbitch sire was the amazing affinity they had with Sunview bloodlines. He sired two litters out of Byam Rose which contained stars such as Pine Mulga, Sungari, Saskagay and Saskaview. Sunview s son Shan s View was also mated to Byam Rose producing The Stripper, Harem Belle, Fast Talk and Bandar Prince. Grafton Derby 407m Best 8 Dogs April 15 1st $1000 and free service to Black Enforcer 2nd $300 3rd $150 Shan s View over Bylane gave us Fawn Nulla, Nulla View and Spartan Prince. Shan s View-Gay Cope produced New Chan. To Dalemee, he got Pablo Star and to Byasta, he sired Amasta. Byasta was also mated with Sunview s brother, Rookie Rebel, resulting in Bybrae, Chacile and Rookon. This Sunview over Byamee nick is one of the most successful ever seen and responsible for most of the best greyhounds from Byamee bitches. The only really other oustanding litter was the Chief Zephyr-Mee Do which produced Worthing, Chief Anama and Glenda Gale. Surprisingly he didn t appear to click particularly well with Black Top (arguably the leading stud dog of that era) although he got a more than useful litter out of Gay Gambler containing Gambling King and Bristol Fashion and also sired Favourite Girl out of Gay Harbor. It is doubtful if there has been a broodbitch sire who could match the deeds of Byamee, particularly considering he only sired 102 litters. One only has to browse through the pedigrees of our major Cup winners to see the mark he made on breeding just as he did on the coursing fields all those years ago. 28 Trainer Allen Shines with hurdle champ Windsor Charm. MURRAY and Ruth Mingins don t go greyhound racing much these days even though the track at Rockhampton isn t far from their home. Ruth is kept busy working at the Rockhampton Base Hospital and Murray, a former jockey, is a contractor and kept just as occupied. But there was a day when the pair, for a few years in the early to mid-70s, hardly missed a race meeting. They part-owned one of Australia s most famous hurdlers, Victorian star Windsor Charm (Chariot Charm-Princess Kerry). Windsor Charm raced in the era of champion hurdler Moon Venture and beat him often, including one notable victory in the Sandown Hurdle Championship in He was one of only two greyhounds Renzo Park (Formerly known as Simpson's Spelling Kennels) Spelling - Rearing - Pre-training Offering you and your valuable greyhounds a LIFETIME OF EXPERIENCE in the industry! A real charmer Murray and Ruth have owned. I was riding at the time and a mate and I were returning from the races one afternoon in 1970, Murray Mingins told The Journal. My mate wanted to stop at the home of breeder Claude Skipworth who had just bred a litter of pups by Chariot Charm out of his National Sprint champion Princess Kerry. Skipworth had the rest of the litter separated from this one pup saying the pup was too aggressive and kept attacking the others. He told me he was going to get rid of the pup. Murray jumped in to save the pup offering to buy him for $500 a good price for any pup in those days. Claude was a cunning old devil and agreed to sell me half the pup who would be raced by my wife Ruth and Claude s daughter Glenda. That s how Windsor Charm came to be. Initially the dog was trained by Bob Pywell at Frankston and while the dog won races for Pywell, eventually Glenda Skipworth sold out of the dog. Ellen Shines, whose husband Allen was one of the great personalities of greyhound racing in Victoria, bought Glenda s half share in the dog and it was to be a great move to Allen s kennel, said Murray. The Shines had a lot of dogs on their property but Windsor Charm lived in their house with them, said Murray. When Allen Shines took over the dog s training, he produced him 27 times for 18 wins breaking a number of hurdle track records and winning the Sandown Park Hurdle title. He hated other dogs, but loved people, said Murray. The reason he was switched to hurdle racing was because he had plenty of ability on the flat but would dwell in the boxes. And just about every week he raced over hurdles, he would meet the same opposition with the exception of maybe one or two new dogs. And he was better than most of them. Cheerful Chariot Which Chariot* Which Side Chariot Charm Sunview That s Sunny That s Fine WINDSOR CHARM Sunview Saskaview Byam Rose Princess Kerry Dasher s Bow Romany Royal Philaurie Unfortunately Windsor Charm collapsed and died after a trial, but not before winning a hurdle exhibition at Wentworth Park and thrashing top class opposition in Hobart and Launceston during a working holiday the Shines had. Murray Mingins has been in racing all his life. He started riding in his home country of New Zealand, came to Australia to work for Pat Murray, of Tails fame, and even rode that great galloper in trackwork. He was like a Rolls Royce, he said. Murray and Ruth moved to Rockhampton in 1982 following Ruth s parents who had been there for a few years. We ve been to the dogs in Rocky a few times, and I even drove the mobile barrier for the trot meetings up here for a couple of years, he said. The couple still retain their Windsor Charm memorabilia. In all, the dog raced 69 times for 26 wins. He was one of the greats over hurdles in a time when hurdle racing was exciting and competitive in Victoria. He ll be remembered by the Mingins forever. Daniel didn't have a choice DANIEL Miles didn t have much say in the matter. He was destined to be a greyhound trainer from the first few months of his life. Daniel s mum, recently elected Townsville Club president Kate Miles, remembers taking a then few weeks old Daniel greyhound racing in Cairns. But Kate and her husband Gary has a similar history in racing. Gary s mum Beryl, now 76, has been a long-time stalwart of greyhound racing in the north. Beryl was one of the first with a greyhound when racing started in Townsville all those years ago, said Kate. Kate Miles has had a long history of involvement in the running of greyhound racing in the Townsville area. She was president of the local owners and trainers association for two years, has been a member for as long as she can remember and is still on the committee, She has also served on the Townsville club committee for some years, spent a time as vice-chairman and is now president. I m there to help, always have been, she said. I want to keep things moving at the club, keep racing rolling along. This is the leading greyhound racing centre outside the south-east. The Miles have a small team in training, with Daniel, 23, holding the reins. Most are from a Scottish Express-Lighthouse Girl litter and include recent Cairns Maiden 1000 winner Bally Rattler and littermate Tears Of Delight. Dam Lighthouse Girl was bought as a maiden from the south by Daniel s grandmother Beryl and headed north to win eight or 10 races. It is the bitch s first litter. Beryl has won a lot of races in the many years she s been training, said Kate. And she s always had a dog in two in training. Daniel has followed in the footsteps of his family. Right from the time he was little he would come walking the dogs with us, but by the time he was in high school he really got interested, said Kate. Daniel too is a member of the Townsville Club committee. Kate s plans for the club centre on its success. I believe our push for TAB coverage of greyhound racing in Townsville must continue, she said. We ve been after this for the past 10 years and will keep pushing for it. Townsville is a major racing centre. We always get trainers from Cairns, and often from Mackay and Rockhampton racing here. And they keep coming back, she said. Kate works for a local transport company but jokes she doesn t let that interfere with her obligations to the greyhound industry. It runs in the family. Kennel of Dreams back bigger than ever Could you be the ultimate fantasy greyhound trainer? Greyhound Racing Victoria s inaugural on-line virtual competition Kennel of Dreams, launched last October, has returned bigger and better in Building on the success of Kennel of Dreams that was conducted throughout the 2005 Superdogs Series, this time around races and greyhounds from right across Australia will be involved. Beginning with the AJS Australia Cup at The Meadows on March 4, Kennel of Dreams participants will need to select a team of greyhounds that will score them points across 19 other major group races (including six Group 1 s), finishing with the Maturity Classic at The Meadows on May 20. As with last year, participants will have the opportunity to compete against every other player in the competition, as well as competing just against friends in your own private league. This year will also see participants able to go head to head with a celebrity expert tipster, and see how your greyhound knowledge really stacks up. Entries into the Kennel of Dreams close at midnight on Friday 3 March, ready for competition to begin with the AJS Australian Cup the following night. Participants will be able to change their kennel of greyhounds throughout the competition, in one of the four designated official trade periods. Choose wisely though, as only six trades for the duration of the competition will be allowed. Minor prizes of $100 cash will be on offer for the winner of each round of races (5 in total), with the person lucky enough to have selected a truly dream kennel, a prize of $2500 cash awaits them after the conclusion of the Maturity Classic on may 20. Lowe pleaded guilty and was suspended for two months and find $250. Skye Royale was disqualified under Rule 108. Lowe was read his rights of appeal. FEBRUARY 2 Stewards present: DM Ryan (chairman), G Thorsby (steward). Stewards opened an inquiry under ARR 11 (1) in relation to an objection lodged by Mr J Hutchison of Pallara. The objection surrounded the eligibility of Zuko which won race 5, a fifth grade at Albion Park on January 26. Stewards took submissions from Hutchison, the trainer of second placegetter Alexander Allen, and Mr R Giltinan, trainer of Zuko. Stewards also considered a written submission from chief Grader Mr E Litter and three written exhibits concerning the lifetime performances of Zuko. Stewards accepted Little s view that Zuko was mistakenly graded and ineligible for the event he was drawn, subsequently competed in and won. Stewards applied ARR 84 which states: Where a steward in charge of the meeting is satisfied upon investigation a greyhound was ineligible to compete in an event, such greyhound shall be disqualified from the event and the stewards shall amend the placings accordingly. Giltinan accepted Zuko was a fourth grade greyhound, however, he indicated the owner would initiate further discussion with the Board with regard to the loss of prizemoney. The result of the race was amended to read: 1 Alexander Allen, 2 Liams Smile, 3 Look Down Wendy. FEBRUARY 9 Stewards present: S McGrath (acting chairman), C McLune (steward). Stewards opened and inquiry in relation to a complaint lodged by trainer John Hutchison against Mr Robert Giltinan in relation to an incident after a stewards inquiry on February 2. Stewards took evidence from Hutchison and Giltinan as well as steward Gail Thorsby. After hearing evidence Giltinan was charged under ARR 125 (1) (q) which states: Any person (including an official) who commits or omits to do any act or engages in conduct which is in any way detrimental or prejudicial to the interest, welfare, image, control or promotion of greyhound racing. He pleaded not guilty, was found guilty and fined $100. He was read his rights of appeal. FEBRUARY 15 The greyhound Rhythmic Affair was a late scratching from the Vince Curry Maiden qualifying trials at Ipswich on February 11 after it was found to have differing ear brands to that shown on its registration papers. The brand in the dog presented read Q G, while the registration papers showed Q B. Stewards noted the greyhound presented was red brindle and not brindle as recorded. On February 13, stewards visited the kennels of Mr Paul Felgate of Alberton. Upon inspection of several greyhounds, it was discovered the ear brand for Rhythmic Affair had been recorded on the registration certificate for the greyhound known as Superlative. The ear brand for Superlative Q B was recorded on the registration certificate of Rhythmic Affair. Stewards noted they were from the same litter and had very similar markings. In discovering the mix-up in certificates, it would appear stewards and club officials incorrectly identified Superlative, which competed in Vince Curry qualifying trial 19, at kenneling, prior to the trial and at the conclusion of the trial. The ear brand recorded on the registration certificate of Superlative was Q B with the brand in the greyhound s ear reading Q G. Stewards noted both greyhounds had been cleared to start by a GRA marking up official. Stewards are not satisfied the greyhound known as Superlative did compete in trial 19. Stewards acting under GAR R11 (28) disqualified Superlative from the event. Stewards ordered new registration papers be produced for each greyhound. No further action will be taken. The amended placings in heat 19 are: 1 Westar Invader, 2 Time To Give, 3 Doc Jamieson Win. The (March, 2006) Journal Page 34

Time: The (March, 2006) Journal Page 36 Olsens have north in Chaos Young Guns... Judy Olsen with April Fury (Cairns winner) and husband Robert with Bone Dust (Townsville winner). IT S not often Tom Noble makes mistakes with dogs, but he almost did a couple of years ago when it came to breeding with smart shortcourser Absolute Chaos. Noble had raced the Cry Havoc-They Need Me bitch with great success. Absolute Chaos won 15 races during her 38-start career for the Noble kennel. She s from the damline made famous by Fifi She s Not and her daughter Pretty Wanderer but she was a pretty fair sprinter herself. She did a lot of racing in the north and at one time won six in a row at Ipswich over 431m, running as quick as 25.20secs. She also won three in Townsville, two in Cairns and one in Ayr as well as her nine at Ipswich. Tom was not going to breed with her, so I asked him to have her for breeding, said Townsville s Robert Olsen. Tom was happy to do so, but wanted a couple from the litter. I picked out History Lesson as her first mate, but right at the last minute, we switched and went to November fury, said Olsen. Lucky for Olsen he did. The litter is exceptional and while only winning short course events to this stage, they could not be more impressive and includes recent 544m Cairns Young Guns winner April Fury, as well as boom Townsville speedster Bone Dust. April Fury downed littermate Saltwater Pete to win the Young Guns final. Tom wasn t going to breed with the bitch, but Tom also doesn t want to miss out on anything, that s why he took a few pups from this litter, said Robert, whose wife Judy owns and trains April Fury. Tom got two of the November Fury- Absolute Chaos litter and one races as brilliant sprinter Absolute Fury already a winner at Albion Park. He s also got two that qualified for the second round of the Vince Curry, said Robert. One of Tom s pups hurt a toe when he was a baby, so we sent him another one on a half share. Absolute Chaos has since gone back to Noble for her second litter, by Big Daddy Cool of which the Olsens have two. She will head back north for her next mating and this time Robert plans to send her to Bombastic Shiraz to continue the Black Shiraz sireline. Of April Fury, Robert says no-one wanted the dog as a pup because he was the runt of the litter. We got stuck with him, but he has really come on and looks to be the one that will run distance, he said. While the rest of the litter, specially Bone Dust, were winning over 380m at Townsville, he was already up to the 498 metres. But he really blossomed when we stepped up his distances. The Olsens have prolific winner Owey racing in the Noble kennel at Albion Park but plan to bring him home when the rich country cups circuit gets underway midyear. But dogs like April Fury will be great for those races as well, he said. Bone Dust is the star of the litter having won 10 of 12 starts (to time of writing). But April Fury will get 600m and might even run further, said Olsen.
