5 ATBA Presidents Letter Dear Fellow ATBA Members, Today I greet you as your new President. Being elected to this position is a great honor for me and I hope to meet and exceed all of your expectations while serving the organization in this function. This year the breeding and racing industry in our state will once again face more challenges, yet each of them also presents an opportunity and I strive to give them all a positive direction for the ATBA. It is my highest priority to work toward increased unity, within this organization and among all industry stakeholders, so we as the horse industry in Arizona speak with one voice when addressing legislative and public relations issues. I urge you to support me in this effort by bringing your experiences and suggestions to my attention. We live in a large state which sometimes makes it hard to meet in person, but you will always find an open line of communication by sending me an to president@atba.net. I look forward to hearing from you. Most of you know already that the sale of Yavapai Downs is now final, and on behalf of the entire ATBA I want to extend our heartfelt congratulations Gary Miller. For many years he has been deeply involved in this industry, and as the past president of the Arizona HBPA he has tirelessly worked to advance the cause of horsemen all over the state. In his new role as track owner I have already assured him our organization s full support for turning the huge task that lays ahead of him into a success story. For all breeders, owners, and trainers of Thoroughbreds and Quarterhorses alike, the re-opening of the racetrack in Prescott Valley under Gary Miller s proven leadership - yet most likely under a new name - is the best piece of news for improving Arizona horse racing in the very near future! Looking back, last year brought many changes within the ATBA, and outgoing President Dennis Grenier was leading that transition with admirable energy. I want to take this opportunity to thank him for his hard work and am enormously grateful that he continues to actively support our legislative efforts. In this capacity he is coordinating with our new lobbyist, Susan Stevens, whose legal and regulatory background provides the ATBA with much needed expertise in this area. I also want to thank Elaine Arena for previously representing the ATBA at the state legislature and forging good working relations with members of the House and Senate that we now can build on. Meanwhile, preparations for the Spring Breeders Festival are already in full swing. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend our Annual Membership Meeting and Awards Dinner on Friday, April 26, 2013, followed by an exciting day of racing on Saturday, April 27, During the Membership Meeting and Awards Dinner you will also have the opportunity to meet in person the entire Board, including the two newly elected members: Dennis Miller, serving as Vice President; and Dr. Filippo Santoro. We all look forward to seeing you there! With best wishes for a successful foaling, breeding and racing season. Sincerely Kevin Owens, President president@atba.net January/February/March Arizona Thoroughbred 5

10 Wills for Business and Farm Owners by John Alan Cohan, Attorney at Law One area of concern for people, particularly those who own an ongoing business, ranch or farm, pertains to the continuation of business without interruption in the event a key member of the family or management team should die. Because of complications that can arise, it is important to insure that proper legal procedures are in place--a Will, suitable clauses in a partnership agreement, and other devices to insure that the activity will remain viable despite the circumstances. In most instances, the owner should have a Will which covers the continuation of the business, funding of the activity, and designation of the people who would have a continued role in the enterprise. Attorneys must review numerous tax and nontax considerations with their clients when creating an estate plan in order to obtain the optimum plan. And where the client has time constraints or is declining health, it is always most expedient to implement a Will, for a great deal more paperwork and administrative followed up are required with setting up a living trust. Quite often the implementation of a simple Will is neglected until it is too late to protect one s farm. If you die with a Will, state law determines who gets your estate. If you have no living relatives, the state gets everything you own. Friends, charities and others who are not relatives won t inherit anything if you die without a Will. The only way to sure that your farm or ranch will be transferred on death in accordance with your expectations and will remain in operation, is to have a properly drafted and executed Will or living trust. A Will does not have to be complex, and frequently it can be simple, brief and to the point. Wills constitute the most important yet least costly legal document you may ever have. Living trusts are often favored by ranchers because this procedure avoids probate court and is difficult or impossible for relatives to contest in court. A living trust is a private instrument giving your successor trustee (usually your spouse or key manager or other principal heir) the immediate right to have access to and control over your property. In several states a Statutory Will form is available that provides more choices to the user while simplicity. The form is a simple as possible, and is designed with the understanding that a lawyer would probably not be looking over the user s shoulder to answer question. I was surprised to learn that some attorneys who are inexperienced in estate planning use the form as a guide for themselves. Such forms are available in the larger stationery stores. An alarming number of Wills, however, are legally defective for one reason or another, particularly those are not drafted and executed in the supervision of an attorney. One of the main problems pertain to Wills that are not signed and witnessed correctly, as strict statutory formality must be observed. With a Will or living trust is it essential to name a trusted person as your executor or successor trustee. That person is usually a principal heir. He or she is given very broad rights, and considerable problems could arise if that person turns out to be untrustworthy. Certain items of property, such as a home held in joint tenancy, cannot be disposed of by will. Also, life insurance proceeds normally are distributed automatically pursuant to the beneficiary designation on the policy. For many farmers joint tenancy is not the proper way to own property for various tax and nontax reasons. The entire joint tenancy property can be subject to creditor s claims, alimony payments, child support payments, or tax liens of one joint tenant, tying up the entire property. In most situations is it prudent to have an attorney experienced in estate planning draw up you Will. v John Alan Cohan is an attorney who has served the livestock and horse industries since For consultations, telephone at (310) or at johnalancohan@aol, or visit his web site at 10 Arizona Thoroughbred January/February/March

RED ZEUS S RACE AND (STAKES) RECORD Year Age Starts 1st 2nd 3rd Earned 2012 at (1) 1 2 (1) $37, at $4,877 The colts and geldings division of the Arizona Breeders Futurity attracted a field of nine. Not having enough horses for trial races, these colts/geldings had a few extra weeks to prepare. Red Zeus looked sharp as he entered the saddling paddock for the running of the 2012 Arizona Breeders Futurity (colts & geldings division). The big chestnut colt, by Red Sky s and out of Crimson Cricket is trained by Dan McFarlane and pranced onto the track with business on his mind. Jockey Kelly Bridges rallied three wide on the turn, assumed command past the eighth pole with Red Zeus and drew off by 3 1/2 lengths, to finish handily. Lewiston was the betting favorite, having won the Fall 2012 ATBA Sales Stakes, but weakened in the final furlongs. Final race time: 1: The hope and thrill of winning this race belonged to Dick and Peggy Hopwood. They were very excited to be the owners and breeder of this champion colt. The Hopwood s saw something special about Red Zeus at the ATBA sale, as they bought him back with dreams of winning the Futurity. Congratulations!!! 16 Arizona Thoroughbred January/February/March

18 In Loving Memory of Karl & Stannie Myers Karl passed away on December 7, 2012 in Phoenix. Stannie preceded him in death by 16 days, passing on December 23, After spending 61 wonderful years together, the family felt she died of a broken heart. Together they had 4 beautiful children; Steven, Linda, Michael and Greg. The Myers had 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. They were both hard workers, and together were very successful owners. The Myers owned and operated (many different businesses). As the saying goes, Behind every successful man is a successful women. They made a great team. Karl loved his family more than anything and if there was a horse race close by you would be sure to find him there. Karl spent most of his years as a very successful horse trainer and won 329 races, with career earnings of $2,547,108. He had a keen eye for a good race horse. Karl made many friends among both professions who admired and respected him greatly. He was a business partner of the Grand Canyon scenic mule rides, with his back ground and love for animals this was a job that you couldn t call work. Karl owned and operated Color Country Chevron in Cedar City for over 40 years. Stannie & Karl loved their ranch on Cedar Mountain, watching the cattle graze and spending time with their family and grand kids. He enjoyed hunting with his sons, watching sports especially when his grandchildren were playing. Stannie was a loving mom, sister and grandmother. She devoted her whole life to taking care of her family. She was an immaculate housekeeper and took much pride in her home. She was very conservative she was even known to wash a paper cup or plate. She had more patience than anyone we knew. She enjoyed the race horses and even owned a few herself. The Grand Canyon trail ride was one of her favorite jobs. She truly loved the years they spent out there with all the memories and the friends that they made. She loved the rides they took on Beaver Mountain and supporting her grand kids in their many activities. Stannie married the love of her life. 18 Arizona Thoroughbred January/February/March

With no trial races, she had a good work pattern at Santa Anita preparing her for her first time out at Turf Paradise in the Arizona Breeders Futurity. Trainer Kory Owens had a double entry, in the Futurity with Sallyana and Red Rachel. They both looked like they shipped well to face a field of 8 more fillies. On top of her game, Jockey Vicky Baze placed Sallyana up between horses to vie for the lead. She drew off near the sixteenth pole and took dead aim on the finish line and never lost her focus. When the race was over Sallyana was on top, finishing the 6 furlongs in 1:11:53. Red Rachel finishing second. 24 R y Eikleberry Always Follow knew from a very young age that he wanted to be a Jockey. It was in kindergarten as a matter of fact! Yes, the children were given an assignment to write what they wanted to be when they grew up and Ry s was YEKCOJ. As Ry grew, he thought his riding career would be short-lived, because of his height (5-foot-9), but he never wavered from wanting to be a jockey. At age 14, Ry proclaimed his professional goal and as a fourthgeneration horseman. He is now the first jockey among his immediate family of horse trainers. Quote: You should never tell a child that their dreams are unlikely Few things are more destructive to one s self respect or dignity, and what a tragedy it would be if they believed it! Anonymous 24 Arizona Thoroughbred January/February/March

25 Your Dreams At age 16, Eikleberry applied for an apprentice jockey s license and was soon on his way to accomplishing his dreams. Ry started his riding career in Denver Colorado. The very first Thoroughbred race that he rode had finished third, but that was not a disappointment. The excitement, the speed and danger of riding race horses kept his interest and work habits at a high level. The thrill of riding in a competitive race had cinched his career insights, and Ry found his way to the winner s circle on a horse named Chopins Crescendo (trained by his father). Chopins Crescendo was born and raised on the Eikleberry ranch. Ironically, Ry helped his father deliver this Thoroughbred colt into the world. Destiny has a funny way of presenting itself to us. CONGRATULATIONS 1,000 Thoroughbred Wins! (continued on page 27) January/February/March Arizona Thoroughbred 25

26 Ry s determination helped him cross off another milestone on his achievement list, winning his 1,000 race on November 19, 2012 at Zia Park. In addition to his parents support, Eikleberry credits his wife, Jilique, whom he met at Canterbury Park in They married on August 4, 2012, and Jilique traveled with Ry from racetrack to racetrack, as he became the seasoned professional that his 1,000th win signifies. He won three consecutive leading jockey titles at Turf Paradise in 2009, 2010 and 2011 before riding full-time in New Mexico. After two years at Cactus Shadow High School as a wrestler, Ry learned the invaluable self-discipline of making weight. He believes one of the major turning points in becoming a jockey came when he was cut from his seventh-grade basketball team. He then turned to wrestling, which forced him to keep his weight down. It was probably the best thing that ever happened to me, because wrestling is what made me get strict about my diet and kept me riding he said. 28 BetBuddie Playing the game, go to Introduction There s no argument that the wagering information and terminology used in past performance data is confusing to the novice handicapper and casual racing fan. The goal of the BetBuddie racing game is to teach the novice race-goer all they need to know to better enjoy the racing experience and become a confident handicapper. Betbuddie is a fun and interesting way to accomplish this because players are learning about racing by working with the statistics for actual races they watch after making their selections. Upon completion of the game, they ll be confident that they possess the tools necessary to make educated wagers How it Works BetBuddie uses a system of levels (with multiple stages in each) to introduce the user to the terminology and information they ll encounter in the past performance section of the racing program. Just like popular video games, each level has specific concepts/skills the player must master to proceed to the next; each level introduces more advanced handicapping information and strategies. At all levels, the first thing the player sees is an image of a past performance page; this image highlights the areas of information that have been addressed in previous levels and what is to be covered in the current one. In the initial levels, the data provided to the player is simplified from this Levels of Play Level 1: l basic information including the owner, post position, silks, horse number, jockey and trainer statistics l in the money percentage and win percentage l win, place and show bets. Level 2: past performance information-the finishing position for the last three races and the jockey who rode the horse Level 3: the running line for the horse s past three races Level 4: Surface statistics, purse money earned Level 5: different types of races; Stakes, claiming, etc Level 6: roll over bets; Daily Double, Pick-3 etc Level 7: pedigree analysis Level 8: exacta and trifecta bets, wagering strategies Level 9: comment section, terminology and abbreviations such as blinkers, Salix, etc. Level 10: The final level of the game is the real test for the user; when all the information learned will be put to the test. At the completion of level 10 players will have gained the confidence to jump in and participate by making real wagers and start earning real dollars. 29 Carlos Sanchez Sam Harte Mark Power Sam Harte and Mike Powers both exchange students from Ireland heard about the opportunity to study in the Race Track Industry Program at the University of Arizona, they knew it was one they couldn t turn down. They both had the passion and love of horses. Sam was never to far away from a horse, going fast and high as he could go on his first pony. His keen interest for sport horses as a teenager led him down different avenues, training at various competition yards in both Ireland and England. Mark was a keen race goer from an early age and longed to try his hand at race riding. He began riding on the pony racing circuits, taking out an apprentice jockey s license. After coming to the University of Arizona they meet Carlos Sanchez a native of Guadalajara, Mexico and immigrated to San Luis, Arizona, a small border town near Yuma. His knowledge of game design, opened up a world of different ideas on how to develop games. These three brilliant young men with the help of others started building Apps for the Racing Industry. The class culminates with students presenting their ideas to those in the industry during the 2012 Global Symposium on Racing & Gaming, which was held December 3-6 in Tucson. Students do not have exams and they do not have to write papers. However, they work under strict deadlines and present weekly on progress toward developing an end product. This industry is proud of these students that improve racing coming from the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program. v January/February/March Arizona Thoroughbred 29

38 Diagnosing and Treating Gastric Ulcers in Horses By UC Davis Center for Equine Heath Horse Report A common case of heartburn can bring intense discomfort, even pain, to a person. Imagine your horse trying to perform with a stomach ulcer. Did you know that the clinical signs of ulcers in horses are subtle and nonspecific and might be reflected in a slight attitude change, a decrease in performance, or a reluctance to train? Gastric ulcers are common in horses. Their prevalence has been estimated to be from 50% to 90% depending on populations surveyed and type of athletic activity horses are engaged in. Gastric ulcers can affect any horse at any age. Foals are particularly susceptible because they secrete gastric acid as early as 2 days of age and the acidity of the gastric fluid is high. Foals that have frequent or interrupted feeding, or are recumbent for long periods have been found to have lower gastric fluids ph (aqueous solutions with a ph less than 7 are acidic), suggesting that milk has a protective effect against ulcers and that recumbency increases exposure of the stomach to acid. In adult horses, gastric ulcers occur more frequently in horses that perform athletic activities, with the highest frequency found in Thoroughbred racehorses (80-90%), followed by endurance horses (70%), and show horses (60%). Researchers have found that exercise increases gastric acid production and decreases blood flow to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In addition, when horses exercise, the acidic fluid in the stomach splashes and exposes the upper, more vulnerable potion of the stomach (squamous mucosa) to an acidic ph. Why are gastric ulcers so common in horses? First, the stomach of the horse is smaller compared with the stomach of other species. Because of this, horses cannot handle large amounts of food; rather, they are built to graze and eat frequent, small portions of feed for extended periods of time. 38 Arizona Thoroughbred January/February/March In a natural grazing situation, the horse requires a steady flow of acid for digestion, so a horse s stomach produces acid 24 hours a day, 7 days a week--up to 9 gallon of acidic fluid per day, even when not eating. In a natural, highroughage diet, the acid is buffered by both feed and saliva. Second, understanding the horse s anatomy, it is possible to see how ulcers could be considered a manmade disease. When horses are fed two times per pay, the stomach is subjected to a prolonged period without feed to neutralize the acid. Futhermore, high-grain diets produce volatile fatty acids that can also contribute to the development of ulcers. Other risk factors for developing gastric ulcers physical and environmental stress such as transport stress and stall confinement (intermittent feeding and lack of exposure to other horses). Recent studies have demonstrated that a few hours of transport can induce gastric ulceration in horses that had none prior to departure, as the determined by gastroscopy. Finally, chronic administration of some non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) --such as phenylbutazone, flunixin meglumine or ketoprofen--can decrease the production of the stomach s protective mucus layer, making it more susceptible to ulcers. ANATOMY OF THE HORSE STOMACH The horse s stomach is divided into two distinct regions: the squamous region at the top (considered a continuation of the esophagus lining) and the glandular mucosa at the bottom (similar to the human stomach). The bottom part is glandular and secretes gastric acid. However, this region also produces mucus and bicarbonate, which protect the mucosa from acid exposure. So even though this region is also exposed to acid for several hours a day, it is not a common place for ulcer formation. When ulcers do form in this region of the stomach, they are usually secondary to chronic NASAID administration. The top portion of the stomach is designed for mixing of the contents of the stomach and does not have as much protection from the acid. This is the most common place to find gastric ulcers. The lining of this section of the stomach is very thin and does not have many mechanisms for acid protection. Because the horse s stomach produces gastric acid at all times, even when not eating, the squamous (continued on page 39)

39 mucosa is exposed to acid several hours a day, which can easily erode the lining of this region. CLINICAL SIGNS The majority of horses with gastric ulcers do not show outward clinical signs. They have more subtle signs, such as: Poor appetite; Dullness; Attitude changes; Decreased performance; Reluctance to train; Poor body condition; Poor hair coat; Weight loss; Excessive time spent lying down; Low-grade colic; and Loose feces. More serious cases will show abdominal pain (colic) and/or grinding of the teeth. Some horses are found on their backs, commonly seen in foals, since this position seems to provide some relief from severe gastric ulceration. Others will walk away from food for a period of time as if they experience discomfort when the food first hit the stomach. Clinical signs of ulcers in foals include intermittent colic (after suckling or eating), frequently lying down, intermittent nursing (interrupted nursing due to discomfort), diarrhea, poor appetite, grinding of teeth, and excess salivation. When a foal exhibits clinical signs, the ulcers are likely to be severe and should be diagnosed and treated immediately. Note that horses that look completely healthy can also have gastric ulcers. Approximately half of the horses presented for colic at UC Davis have gastric ulcers and often it is hard to know whether the colic is the result of the ulcers or the other way around. DIAGNOSING ULCERS The only way to definitively diagnose ulcers is through gastric endoscopy, or gastroscopy, which involves placing an endoscope into the stomach and looking at its surface. This procedure is easy to perform, is minimally invasive, and allows us to evaluate the esophagus, squamous and glandular regions of the stomach, and proximal segment of the small intestine in horses. Since feed material can prevent a complete evaluation of the stomach, horses are fasted for a minimum of 12 hours and water is withheld for four hours before examination. To minimize stress, we sedate the horse slightly with a short-acting tranquilizer. We then insert the endoscope through the nostril and down the esophagus into the stomach. The light and camera on the end of the endoscope allow the veterinarian to observe the stomach lining. The procedure is very safe, and a complete evaluation takes from 10 to 20 minutes. Some practitioners will treat a horse for gastric ulcers and look for a change in clinical behavior. This can be helpful but does not answer the question of when to discontinue treatment. Horses that improve with treatment should be scoped prior to discontinuing therapy. PREVENTION AND TREATMENT As always, prevention is preferable to treatment. We have described some common risk factors that can contribute to the formation of gastric ulcers in horses. The following management techniques may assist in preventing ulcers: Feed horses frequently or on a free-choice basis (pasture). This helps to buffer the acid in the stomach and stimulate saliva production, nature s best antacid. Reduce the amount of grain and concentrates and/or add alfalfa hay to the diet. Discuss any feed changes with your veterinarian so that medical conditions can be considered. Avoid or decrease the use of anti-inflammatory drugs. If anti-inflammatory drugs must be given, consider newer ones such as firocoxib, in appropriate. Limit stressful situations such as intense training and frequent transporting. If horses must be stalled, allow them to see and socialize with other horses as well as have access to forage. A common question asked by horse owners is, If the prevalence of gastric ulcers is so high, do I need to treat my horse for the rest of its life? Considering that treatment is expensive and that acid in the stomach is there for a reason, we do not recommend that horses be treated continuously. Antacids are commonly used in humans to buffer or neutralize gastric acid and protect the mucosa. However, in horses, the dose of antacids required to buffer the ph is high and would need to be used several times a day to be effective. If antacids are used for treating gastric ulcers in horses, they should be used in combination with agents that decrease acid production. January/February/March Arizona Thoroughbred 39

40 Acid pump inhibitors such as omeprazoe and pantoprasole stop gastric acid secretion completely. Other effective types of drugs for the treatment of ulcers are the histamine type 2 (H-2) receptor blockers such as cimetidine, ranitidine, and famotidine, which partially block acid production. H-2 receptor blockers work in a similar way to antihista mines used for allergies, except that antihistamines act on type 1 histamine receptors, while the acid blocker acts on type 2 histamine receptors. H-2 receptor blockers are less expensive than acid pump inhibitors, but they need to be administered three times a day and only partially block acid production. Currently, there is only one treatment--omeprazole--approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for gastric ulcers in horses. In 2000, the Federation Equestre Internationale allowed the use of the gastric ulcer medications omeprazole and ranitidine during competition. Omeprazle is available as a paste formulation and it has been very effective in preventing and treating gastric ulceration in all types of horses. Although the commercial paste is expensive, it is very effective and requires administration once a day. Due to the cost of this product, some compounding pharmacies prepare and sell paste or liquid omeprazole at cheaper prices. However, several studies have shown that the amount of active omeprazole in those products is lower than the label. In addition, the ability of those products to inhibit gastric acid production and their ability to resolve gastric ulcers have been variable. At this dose, the omeprazole is less costly and could serve as a good investment in your horse s well being. By Jorge Nieto, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVS-- Reprinted from The Horse Report with permission from the Center for Equine Health, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis (UC Davis). v For All Your Equine Photography Horse owners should be wary of claims for products that are not controlled or regulated by the FDA (compounded products) or evaluated in scientific studies. While those products might be less expensive, they could cost you more in the long run. We recommend treating (1) horses with severe gastric ulceration, (2) horses with clinical signs of gastric ulceration, and (3) horses that are under stressful conditions and at risk of gastric ulceration. Under these circumstances, treatment with a product that is labeled specifically to prevent and/or treat ulcers and approval be the FDA should be used. Treatment should be given for a full month, followed by a recheck endoscopy to confirm complete healing. A preventative dose of omeprazole is commercially available for use around transport or stressful events. Horses with a history of gastric ulceration may benefit from proactive treatment to decrease the chances of ulcer recurrence.
