1 View this in your browser Welcome to the AQHA UK Autumn Newsletter! Autumn is well and truly upon us now, with nights drawing in but still some beautiful warm days. Horse owners are to be seen running in and out of fields taking rugs off or putting them on, depending on the weather! This newsletter is once again 'western-led' as we have no news on the quarter horses that are out there doing other disciplines. Please send us news of your horse doing dressage, show jumping or whatever; we know they're out there but rely on owners to send in pictures, stories and articles. Hope to hear from you soon. The Breed Show news is just a snippet - they'll be a whole lot more with full results

Class entry lists and times etc are on the DQHA website and you can watch live by clicking here: Breed Show 2016 Congratulations to all competitors for their fantastic achievements at the Breed Show. Also thanks go to all those who worked on the event. And finally a huge thank you to Lita Pocock and her team at Oakridge for hosting the show and making sure everyone felt very welcome over the four days.

5 Please come along and visit us on our stand! AQHA UK - Council of Management Just what is our Council of Management or Council and what exactly should it be doing? Our Articles of Association determine that the business of the Association must be managed by a Council, made up of members (minimum of 4, maximum of 7) who provide their time and services on an entirely voluntary basis. Individuals are elected or co-opted for a set period of time and in law are both Trustees of a national charity, and Directors of a public limited company, namely the Association. Council members have specific powers and responsibilities, for example: making rules and regulations for the management of the Association managing the registration of animals in the stud book imposing on members fines for breaches of Association rules expelling members from the Association statutory responsibilities linked to our status as a charity and private company Overall, Council is responsible for making sure the Association runs in accordance with its stated aims, in a professional, efficient and effective manner as well as satisfying its responsibilities as an affiliate of AQHA in America.

6 Currently Council has 7 definitive roles - these are roles which are designed not only to fill its responsibilities, but also to help generate and implement the changes required to modernise the Association. In addition, Council contract out the formal Company Secretary role to our Accountants. Nick Mason (Chair AQHA UK) said: "Our priority over the last couple of months has been to fill the current vacancies on Council; we were down to the minimum permitted number to operate and needed to establish some consistency so that we could move forward. Thankfully over the last couple of weeks we have received a number of expressions of interest and are in the process of appointing people to roles. I have indicated previously my intention for AQHA UK Council to draw a line under the past difficulties and focus its energy on improving the Association for its members. We need a fully operating Council to be able to do this. It looks like we may finally be turning a corner. Our efforts over the Autumn and Winter will be to greatly improve the operations of AQHA UK. I will be presenting to our AGM in the spring details of what has been done, and what is planned for Of course, at that AGM members will have the opportunity to either support the current Council s approach, or vote for something else". AQHA UK Council is currently operating with 7 distinct roles: Chair / Financial Director Administration Director International Director Breed / Technical Director Membership Director Event / Show Director Youth Director In next months issue, Nick will report on who now sits on Council, as well as giving an update on each of these 7 areas of its work. 7 Huge CONGRATULATIONS to Henrietta Campbell and her lovely mare, Aviv. Together they have achieved the 1000hr in the Saddle award and will receive a Montana Silversmith Buckle. Such a fantastic achievement and very well deserved! The GOAR latest standings and achievements are on the website.

8 BHS Riding and Road Safety Test Taken by more than 4,000 candidates a year, the BHS Riding and Road Safety Test helps educate riders in road safety, in order to minimise the risk involved when riding on the roads. The test is available to all riders from 12 years of age and is supported by the Department for Transport. It is probably the only test that any rider will undertake that has the potential to save not only their own life, but that of their horse and other road users as well. Go to the website to find out about taking the test, hosting a training event at your venue or becoming an assessor. British Horse Society. The BHS teamed up with researchers from Nottingham University to alert horse owners to the early signs of Colic. Calling the vet out in the early stages is essential to the recovery of the horse. They used the acronym REACT to help: R Restless or agitated E Eating less or droppings reduced A Abdominal pain C Clinical changes T Tired or lethargic For more information go to the BHS Website and watch the video. If you are an AQHA UK member and you and your horse have achieved something this year (and it doesn't need to be "western"), let us know, send us a photo, write us a little article - even just a paragraph to accompany a photo. We want to include as many of you as possible in the Journal/Year Book as it is YOUR association. BUT, if you don't let us know, we can't include you! We are sure there are lots of you who are doing lots of different things with your horses, Endurance, Trec, Show Jumping, Pleasure Rides, Hacking, Cross Country, Dressage etc, so why not send us a photo and some words? us here - deadlines very soon!

A full report by Debi Bell will be in included in the next AQHA UK Journal but in brief the Saturday clinic with Juergan Von Bistram was a great success for both participants and spectators. For Sunday s show the morning was held outdoors before rain forced the afternoon classes indoors. As a novice show and with the All Breed classes it was great to see some new riders take part. The Hi- point winners were - AQHA Level 1 Hi Point - Doreen Allison and Step Up and Shine Thistle Hi Point - Victoria MacLachlan and Bostons Tea Party A huge thank to the management team, volunteers, sponsors and competitors, you all helped to make the show a success! 12 Fenland Quarter Horse Shows Fenland Quarter Horse Shows would like to congratulate all our Fenland Circuit Champions of 2016, in particular Avril Wilson, riding RS Hermes Olena, who won the Novice Amateur High Point Ranch holiday and the Amateur High Point Trophy saddle. A special mention must go to Gill Parker, riding Gregory Pep

13 who kept Avril on her toes throughout the competition, finishing one point behind her for the Amateur High Point award. There is still all to play for with one more Trophy saddle to be won, which will be presented at our last Sovereign All Breeds show at the end of this year. Kate s Yorkshire Challenge Kate West is currently nearing the end of her month s Yorkshire challenge riding up to 20 miles a day to raise funds for Charity.

14 Kate s Yorkshire Challenge Kate West is currently nearing the end of her month s Yorkshire challenge riding up to 20 miles a day to raise funds for Charity. She was going to be doing it on her lovely Quarter Horse Dougal, but unfortunately had an unexpected lameness and couldn t take part. Luckily Sarah Hood of Double S Criollo Horses, who was helping Kate with the challenge loaned her a lovely horse for the charity fundraiser. So why is Kate doing this? Well, she is a remarkable lady who is diabetic and has undergone two kidney transplants, receiving organs from her mother, and her brother. Kate has also been registered blind for the past 15 years. She keeps Dougal at Sovereign Quarter Horses in March, and rides there when she can, although she lives in Liverpool and works at the World Museum. Kate truly is an example to us all; she s raising money for Guide Dogs for the Blind, she has a guide dog called Daisy, and for the British Kidney Patient Association. Arrangements are underway for next year's AQHA Horsemanship Camp. This year it was held in Yorkshire and was very well attended; the three day clinic was followed by an unaffiliated show.

There are plans to hold the Camp in the South West of England in response to members who asked that events are held around the country. No dates are confirmed as yet but if you wish to register your interest please and you will be contacted as soon as all details are finalised. Newsletter! We want to increase the content of the newsletter and would like to include articles from those in the western and English community who have quarter horses.
