2 Who we are Founded in 1962 under the motto Horsemanship through Knowledge, the Erie Hunt and Saddle Club has more than 50 acres of riding grounds on the corner of Eureka and Old State Roads in Franklin Center, just outside Erie, Pennsylvania. We are easily accessible from I-90 and I-79. We are the region s premier nonprofit location for equine education, shows, and events. Our riding grounds include three sand show rings, permanent stabling for 110 horses (with running water and electric), an announcer s stand with permanent and portable sound systems, and a clubhouse with a kitchen and seating areas. We have stadium fences, lower-level cross-country schooling fences, and access to a cross-country course. We hold events from May through October. In addition to the shows, we offer equine training and riding clinics throughout the year. We contribute to and work with other area nonprofits, including out local Pony Club and 4H Clubs. We also have general membership meetings throughout the year, including films, social gatherings, demonstrations, and activities related to horses. 10 New for 2018! The Erie Hunt and Saddle Club is excited to introduce several new classes to the show bill for our Open Horse Shows. Classes 19, 20, 21,28, 29 and 30 are devoted to the popular and growing disciple of ranch riding. According to the AQHA Rulebook, a few keys exhibitors need to know in ranch riding: In the AQHA ranch riding class, the horse is shown individually in pattern work and is judged on the precision of the pattern maneuvers and the horse s movements. The horse should simulate a horse riding and working outside the confines of an arena. The horse should execute the maneuvers at a forward ground-covering pace. As for rein length, the rider should have light rein contact. The instructors specifically noted that the horse should not be shown on a draped rein. Additionally, a horse may not be entered in a western pleasure and ranch riding class at the same horse show. This rule applies to all AQHA divisions (youth, amateur, Select and open). A few notes on horse presentation and equipment: Tail extensions are not allowed. The horse s mane cannot be braided or branded. The horse s hooves cannot have black polish. Silver plating on saddles and bridles is discouraged. Clipping the inside of the horse s ear is discouraged. The rulebook encourages the use a breast collar and/or a rear cinch. As for rider presentation, the instructors advised riders that they should not wear any bling on their show clothes. The show clothing should be well-fitted and workmanlike. Chaps are not required for the class. However, chinks are quite popular to wear for the class. Some other notes instructors offered about ranch riding: The rulebook encourages the use of natural logs in the class. The exhibitor may post at the trot. The exhibitor may touch or hold the saddle horn. Tip: the instructors noted that there is a growing trend of riders standing up in their stirrups for the extended trot. Maneuvers to Practice The instructors generally explained that riders will be penalized for having their horse overbridled, draped reins, and being too slow per gait. Transitions are extensive 10

11 in ranch riding, so the riders practiced transitions from the extended lope to extended trot etc., the sidepass and spins, as well as riding over natural logs and practicing the lead change. The lead changes can be flying or simple (in the simple, the lead change must be within three strides or less). Finally, the instructors encouraged the rider to read more about the specific rules for the class by referring to the AQHA Rulebook, so they can be prepared to partake in this exciting class! The Ranch-Type Pleasure and Ranch Riding horse should reflect the versatility, attitude, and movement of a working horse. The horse s performance should simulate a horse riding outside the confines of an arena and that of a working ranch horse. This class should show the horse s ability to work at a forward, working speed while under control by the rider. Light contact rein should be rewarded. Ranch- Type classes are shown at the walk, trot, extended trot, lope, and extended lope. The Ranch Riding class will be judged using one of the AQHA patterns, or a pattern of the judge s choice, as long as the required gait maneuvers and three of the optional maneuvers are included. Optional maneuvers include: side pass, turns of 360 degrees or more, change of lead (simple or flying), walk, trot, or lope over a log(s); or some reasonable combination of maneuvers that would be reasonable for a horse to perform or encounter during ranch work. Overall manners and responsiveness of the horse while performing the maneuver requirements, and the horse s quality of movement are the primary considerations of this division. Questions regarding ranch riding can be directed to: Amy Zgrebnak

55 EHSC Year End Award Rules 1. No horse or pony may accumulate points at any event unless the completed registration form has been received by the Year-End Points Coordinator prior to entering the ring in a class for which the horse/ pony and rider may collect points. 2. A horse/pony may have different riders during the year. Only points collected while horse/pony is registered with the Erie Hunt and Saddle Club count toward year-end awards. If both riders have registered the animal, then points collected under each rider shall be counted. Horse/ pony and rider combinations must remain the same for points to count. 3. Points may be collected at all EHSC Horse shows, Dressage shows, Combined Test, Horse Trials and Hunter Paces. No points will be collected in classes limited to a specific breed or breeds. 4. Horse/Pony will be assigned a number for each show. If someone other than the registered rider is to ride the horse/pony they must use a different number. 5. The name of the registered horse/pony must remain the same for the entire show season. This name must be used when registering for classes and shows. Failure to use same name for entire show season will result in a loss of points, this is the only way to accurately track each horse/pony and rider combination. 6. Rider s age is determined as of Dec. 1 of the previous year. Horse s age is determined as of Jan. 1 of this year. 7. All Walk/Trot points will be forfeited if horse/pony and rider move up to canter classes. 8. Hull Cup: Awarded to a member each year for outstanding service to the club. 55

Points are only calculated to sixth place. 10. Every point counts toward Horse/Pony of the year, except equitation/horsemanship classes. 11. Any type of class that is walk/trot only, counts towards walk/trot award. 12. For Combined Tests, Mini Trial and Horse Trial: the dressage score counts towards Dressage award and the overall score counts towards Event Rider award and Horse/Pony of the Year. 13.
