6 PROGRAM HISTORY The United States Hunter Jumper Association was created in 2004, with the mission of advancing and representing the hunter and jumper disciplines by fostering an educated community of equestrians that promote the welfare of the horse and fairness in competition. The USHJA High Performance Hunter Program was created in 2007 to bring the tradition and art of horsemanship back to the show ring. The USHJA International Hunter Derby classes showcase the High Performance Hunters by providing them with the opportunity to compete over courses and obstacles that highlight the tradition and excitement of the American Hunter Discipline and System and to earn significant prize money in the feature class at many of the country s most prestigious horse shows. The eventual goal is to receive approval of the hunters as an international discipline from the FEI. The mission of the USHJA High Performance Hunter Committee is to advance the sport of show hunters and to bring it to the international level. Committee members are dedicated to preserving: The traditional principles of hunter riding The ideals of brilliance, correct jumping style, and the athletic ability of the show hunter True collaboration of horse and rider at the highest level of training and competition Sportsmanship and the welfare of the show hunter The USHJA International Hunter Derby Demonstrations held during the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games at the Kentucky Horse Park in 2010 proved a huge draw and confirmed a worldwide interest in show hunters. The concept of the Hunter Derby was presented to a large eclectic audience that could potentially assist the USHJA in its mission to receive approval of hunters as an international discipline from the FEI by returning home and initiating the same type of competition in their own countries. The Competition Series saw an ever increasing number of horses and riders participating in 59 USHJA International Hunter Derby classes nationwide that together offered nearly one million dollars in prize money. The USHJA International Hunter Derby is quickly becoming a catalyst to bring people from around the world to our sport. 7 Judging The USHJA International Hunter Derby Hunter Derby classes are judged using accepted judging principles for hunters as well as incorporating a system of bonus points. The different types of fences and more difficult courses are designed to enhance our judging system of rewarding great jumping style, and athletic ability, as well as bold hunter riding. Horses will be judged and numerically scored on quality, movement, jumping style, manners and way of going. Pace and brilliance are to be rewarded. In all rounds of the Hunter Derby there must be four option fences set at 4 0 to 4 3 in height. (Exception: Jump Off Round where there must be a minimum of two option fences set at 4 0 to 4 3 in height). Each judging panel must award an Option Bonus Score of one additional point for EACH of the higher option fences jumped by the rider in each round. The additional one point for each higher option fence jumped must be awarded even if there is a refusal, rail down, or loss of good jumping style at that higher option fence. First Example - If a rider jumps only one higher option fence, but has that rail down, his score would go from a 45 to a 46. Second Example - If a rider jumps only one higher option fence, but jumps it in very poor style, his score would go from a possible score of 65 to a score of 66. Third Example If a rider attempts only one higher option fence but has a refusal, followed by a successful second attempt at the same higher option fence, his score would go from a possible score of 40 to 41. In the Classic Hunter Style Round of the Hunter Derby, each judging panel will give their original score for each horse-and-rider combination based on accepted hunter judging principals. This score and the Option Bonus Score will be announced separately, and then added together to determine the total score of each judging panel for this round. The Handy Hunter Round of the Hunter Derby includes three scoring components. Each judging panel will give their original score for each horse-and-rider combination based on accepted handy hunter judging principles. Then, each judging panel will then be required to give their Option Bonus Score followed by the Handy Bonus Score. The Handy Bonus Score consists of between 0 and 10 points based on each judging panel s opinion of how handily this round was ridden. Riders should be rewarded for making daring choices, difficult turns and working with brilliance and pace. These three scores will be announced separately and then added together to determine the Handy Hunter Round total from each judging panel. The total scores of each horse-and-rider combination from each judging panel are added together to determine that entrant s total score in each round. The total scores of each horse-and-rider combination in each round will be added together to determine their final overall Hunter Derby score. This score will determine the final overall standings of the Hunter Derby class USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals Presented by Dietrich Equine Insurance 5

18 Lifetime Earnings for USHJA International Derby Winners The USHJA International Hunter Derby program was developed in 2007 to bring the heritage and art of horsemanship to the forefront of the show ring. The USHJA Derby classes highlight the high performance hunters by providing them with the opportunity to compete over courses and obstacles that recall the history and excitement of the American Hunter Discipline and System, while earning significant prize money in the feature class at many of the country s most prestigious horse shows. Since the inception of the USHJA International Hunter Derby program more than three million dollars has been awarded to the sport s elite athletes. Prize money earnings have been recorded and tracked since USHJA has now launched a Lifetime Earnings data base on its web site to allow both fans and participants the ability to follow the career winnings of their favorites. The standings, which are broken down into two categories, by money won per rider and money won per horse, include competitions with a start date of December 01, 2007 through competitions in the current series for which USHJA has results. USHJA wishes to recognize the accomplishments of these exceptional competitors. From the beginning of the Derby program one horse has led the charge in collecting prize money- Jersey Boy, owned by SBS Farm of Buffalo, NY, the 10 year-old Hanoverian gelding has amassed an impressive $155,000 in lifetime earnings thus far. Jersey Boy s partner from day one, Jennifer Alfano had a joyous reaction to the news, Good boy! This is great and I m thrilled he s number one. It s really special because I brought him along as a youngster and there were some tough times! He s pretty consistent now, but he thinks his job is keeping me on my toes. I m really happy for him-he deserves this honor. Owner Susan Schoellkopf couldn t agree more, He has been a once in a lifetime horse! He and Jennifer are an amazing combination and a thrill for me to watch! Being at the top of the Lifetime Earnings is amazing!! The popularity and success of the USHJA International Hunter Derby Program continues to grow largely in part to the generous support of sponsors and competition managers throughout the US. One of the goals of the program has always been to receive approval of the hunters as an international discipline of the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI). The program took a big step in the right direction when the USHJA held International Hunter Derby demonstrations during the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games at the Kentucky Horse Park in It proved to be a huge draw and confirmed a worldwide interest in show hunters. Regarding the USHJA International Hunter Derby program and Lifetime Earnings Standings, Schoellkopf said, Love this program! Absolutely a great help being able to track earnings will bring us in line with other sports and acknowledges the top of our sport in the hunters. 53 It was either your horse or my horse. 1 Lyndsey Tait, Hunter Under Saddle, Equitation and ULCERGARD user since That s a risk I wasn t willing to take. The simple truth is that every horse is at risk for stomach ulcers. Including yours. It s time to reduce the risk with ULCERGARD (omeprazole). It s the only medicine approved by the FDA to prevent equine stomach ulcers.* Take action at ulcergard.com. * When administered for 8 or 28 days, ULCERGARD is proven to effectively prevent stomach ulcers in horses exposed to stressful conditions. 1 Mitchell RD. Association for Equine Sports Medicine, September IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: ULCERGARD can be used in horses that weigh at least 600 pounds. 54 Top Hunter Derby Riders Tammy Provost, Jennifer Alfano, Peter Pletcher, Louise Serio & Liza Towell Boyd sport their Making A Difference bracelets to show their support. SHOW YOUR SUPPORT IN Photos by Hunter Messineo This handmade bracelet, made with real horse hair and fine Italian sterling silver accents, retails for $ and has been made available to you at the special price of $ The proceeds from this bracelet directly support the USHJA Foundation and the Horseman s Assistance Program, which provides urgent assistance to horses and equestrians in need. The USHJA Foundation was created to provide funding for educational programs, grants, scholarships, and research, as well as emergency assistance to those in need. This Foundation serves a broad base of equestrians who are members of the United States Hunter Jumper Association. These members include dedicated horsemen and horsewomen, equestrian-related organizations and horses. This year the Foundation has provided urgent relief to several USHJA members including: A long time equestrian with stage 4 lung cancer; an aspiring young professional who broke her back; and a braider unable to work due after receiving life-saving surgery. It s only through donations and fundraising that the Foundation is able to continue its work in supporting those in urgent need and the needs of the industry as a whole. This Foundation is working toward providing research grants, educational scholarships, and support for USHJA programs such as the Emerging Athletes Program which identifies young talent throughout the country and provides them the opportunity to develop their skills. The USHJA Foundation provides philanthropic equestrians and industry supporters with the ability to play an important role in the future of our sport. Each contributor to the Foundation will know they personally made a difference. With 90 cents of every dollar going directly to these important programs, the USHJA Foundation encourages every member, as well as all hunter/jumper enthusiasts, to help support the industry we all love. We ask you to help us in Making A Difference in our sport! To purchase your bracelet, contact the USHJA Foundation at or visit

56 USHJA s First Ever Mobile Application At The Gate Available for free download on your Apple or Android smart phone, tablet or other device. This was a great idea. Long overdue. As a steward, I have taken to carrying a tablet with me to access the rules quickly and have the most recent changes. Many times, I use it to back me up on rule violations. Now no one really has an excuse at the ring, not to know the rules. Everyone carries a smart phone. Susan Blessing Licensed Steward USHJA At The Gate mobile application provides you with on-the-go with training tips, up-to-date rule changes, qualifying information, show standings and so much more, all at your finger tips! Take the information you need, when you need it, to anywhere you go. Marnye Langer of LEGISequine.com, presenting sponsor of At the Gate, also sees the mobile app as a means of supporting the members, specifically trainers. We pride ourselves on being responsive and knowledgeable to our insurance customers. Supporting the USHJA s first mobile app just made sense and reflects our goal of supporting busy professionals and providing them with the products and services they need.
