NEWS April 2018 As the resident tax nerd, it s ironic that my turn to write for the newsletter falls on the month of April. Sometimes when the horse expenses are piling up I think to myself, It sure would be nice to deduct these on my tax return! Unfortunately, for those of us not in the horse business, there are no tax deductions for our fourlegged money pits! And for those in the horse business, be very careful the IRS HATES horses. Another rant for another day! With The Fork coming up, we ll all be watching the professionals whiz around the cross country course and dance through the dressage tests. In addition to being mesmerized by the athletic talent, I ll also be wondering how many states these competitors show in and hoping they have a good CPA! Did you know that most cities and states levy a jock tax on any income earned by athletes while working in that city? There s a lot of fine print and different rules, but you get the point. Food for thought next time you re watching Saturday Night Lights. Natalie Schembra - Treasurer

FRC March Seminar: Equine Dentistry Presented by Dr. Jaime Ashbrook of Freer Equine On March 21, 2018 the Foothills Riding Club hosted their second Educational Seminar for 2018 at FENCE. There were almost 50 people in attendance. AT each FRC seminar, members are given a free raffle ticket for a chance to win a unique prize. The winner of March s raffle is Johanna Meek, congratulations! This event sponsored local non-profit, TROT (Therapeutic Riding of Tryon). Dr. Ashbrook donated her $100 presenter s honorarium and members raised $83 to add to a total donation of $183, which was presented to TROT s Director, Allison Rhyne. Dr. Ashbrook began by discussing the role of dentistry for our horses and what it really means when applied in real life situations. We all know that we should get our horse s teeth floated every year, but equine dentistry really encompasses so much more than that. By definition, Equine Dentistry is the diagnosis and treatment of ailments affecting a horse s mouth, teeth and head, including the sinuses. Many horse owners do not make the connection that dental health complications can affect a horse s entire body, and are often over-looked when trying to decipher how and why your horse is hurting. From a veterinary point of view, the goals of equine dentistry are to improve mastication (ability to chew), general health, and longevity. The general disciplines within equine dentistry include endodontics, oral surgery and orthodontics, which can include correcting misalignment. Dr. Ashbrook s focus was on preventive care, and how to keep your horse from getting to the point they will need something like orthodontic intervention. The anatomy of the equine tooth was discussed to help participants better understand which parts will contribute to certain problems and overall dental health - the cementum, enamel, dentin and the pulp cavity. The anatomy of equine teeth is what make their upkeep so unique. The upper and lower jaw are constructed VERY differently, but need to work together to chew food efficiently. We have all heard of the points on our horse s teeth, but how do these occur? Dr. Ashbrook explained how the motions of the horse chewing naturally creates enamel points on the outside top and inside bottom of the dental line.

Horses have what is called Hypsodont teeth, these are high crowned teeth which continue to erupt throughout their life. They do not grow but rather they erupt - the entire tooth is in the horse s mouth from youth and simply begins to erupt or become visible over time. Horses teeth, like humans have two sets of teeth: infant teeth and adult teeth. Baby teeth may start at birth and the timing of the eruption of new teeth varies depending on the type of tooth. Generally, the first permanent teeth are the foremost molars and typically are the first to expire as the horse ages due to their early eruption. EOTRH, or Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis, is a relatively new discovery or name for an old situation. In the case of EOTRH the teeth start to resorb and deteriorate instead of erupting normally. In terms of preventive care, younger horses need their teeth examined and treated more often than adults because of the degree of change in a horse s mouth during the first few years of life. Dr. Ashbrook showed information about how often horses should have their teeth assessed based on their age. A proper dental assessment includes discussion of a horse s history, lifestyle & workload, veterinarian observations of behavior/attitude, and general health exam for body score. The dental evaluation also includes a physical exam, head examination including inspection of the sinuses and bony protrusions of the face and skull. Dr. Ashbrook also showed tools used during an exam and diagnostic equipment utilized for further diagnosis or exploration, then went on to explain how the findings are documented in a dental chart. Participants viewed a variety of photos of different types of edges and hooks as well as other dental anomalies. Dr. Ashbrook provided great visuals of the mouth and what is and is not normal. It is good for owners to know what vets are looking for and how they can treat it. Examples included waves, hooks and steps as well as retained baby caps, fractures, and missing teeth. Owners & caretakers need to be able to recognize dental problems and how those will manifest themselves. Some of the exhibited behaviors are head tilting, head tossing, tongue rolling, excess salivation, loss of body condition, swellings, foul smell from the mouth and nasal discharge. Early detection is key to preventing dental problems from getting out of hand. The discussion closed with an examination of how attitudes have changed around equine dental work, just like most aspects of horse health care. New technology has helped us to better understand the mechanics and physiology behind the structure and function of the horse s teeth and all the parts of their system that they influence. A huge thanks to Dr. Ashbrook for presenting and everyone who joined us to learn more about equine dental health! Please join us on April 18 th at FENCE for our next Seminar. Jim and Dana Zygmont will be presenting about Truck and Trailer Maintenance and Repair!

FRC Scholarship Reminder One of the perks of being an FRC member, is that you are eligible to apply for one of the four $250 Member Scholarships that we award each year. Scholarships can be used in a variety of ways. In the past, they have been used for riders to defer the cost of going to events such as championship competitions, rare educational opportunities, or clinics applicable to your discipline. There are only a few requirements to be considered for a scholarship. You must be a member at the time of your application, and you also must be willing to share the knowledge you gained through your scholarship experience with the club in some way (ideas must be approved by the scholarship committee). This could be a short presentation at one of our seminars, info table or infographic at shows, newsletter report, etc. Want to apply for a scholarship, but not sure if your endeavor would be approved- don t worry! The application is short, sweet and to the point. If there happens to be an influx of applicants at any deadline, volunteer service to the FRC in the current and preceding membership year will be considered when awarding scholarships. Application deadlines are April 1 st, July 1 st, October 1 st, and January 1 st depending on the date of the event. Any member is eligible to apply! First FRC Scholarship Recipient of 2018 Congratulations to FRC Member Hailey Morris, who was awarded the first Scholarship of 2018! Hailey is the captain of the UNCA Equestrian Team and a very talented rider. She has qualified for Regionals in Novice Fences and Flat for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. Hailey will be using the $250 FRC Scholarship to defer the costs of attending the regional competition. Every scholarship recipient is required to give back to the club in a way that will show case their experiences. Hailey plans to organize a photo seminar to detail her journey to regionals! FRC is proud to be able to award four scholarships annually. In order to qualify for an FRC Scholarship, you must be a current FRC member at the time of your application. Additionally, your request must be for a rare educational opportunity or clinic or a championship competition purpose directly related to your riding discipline. In exchange, scholarship recipients must give back to the club in some tangible way. Please don t hesitate to apply!

Spotlight On Our Members FRC Member of the Month: Jennifer Dowdney Our April FRC Member of the Month is Jennifer Dowdney, of Fletcher, NC. She was nominated by her stable-mates for several reasons, but mainly because her presence at the barn is fun and inspiring. You can always turn to Jennifer for advice or a calming presence when you are in a tizzy about an abscess. Her horse, Tigger, is just as lovely as she is! Jennifer and Tigger are just starting their second year as FRC members and plan to show later in the season. Jennifer and her family have lived in Asheville for five years this month! She and her husband visited Asheville for their honeymoon, and started to think of moving there. After their daughter was born, the three of them visited Asheville for family vacations every chance they could. About six years ago, it was the right time to move, and they left coastal South Carolina to head for the mountains and haven t looked back! Jennifer first heard of FRC when she had just moved here, but didn t actually become a member until she got her current horse, Tigger, about three years ago. Jennifer did not grow up riding. At 12, she worked as a junior counselor at a day camp in her hometown in central Tennessee. The camp offered horse rides. She loved the horses but was a little scared of them in the beginning. Soon, Jennifer asked her parents if she could start riding lessons and they agreed. She still remembers going to school in 7th grade and counting the minutes until 3 p.m. when she would get to go to her riding lesson. She kept with it and got a wonderful large pony named Sugar Daddy. They participated in pony club events and went to clinics and rallies though her middle school and high school years. In college, she did not ride, but Jennifer kept her saddle because she kept thinking she would return to it eventually. A few jobs and cities later, she still had the saddle and would take riding lessons sporadically just to be around horses. About twelve years ago, Jennifer began riding regularly again. She had two horses before her current one, and although they were fun, they were not the perfect fit. When she went shopping for a horse this last time, Jennifer took a

trainer with her and really knew what she wanted. They traveled to Alpharetta, GA to try a Morgan-Friesian cross and the second she got on him, she knew. Jenifer recalls, I thought I haven t been this calm since my first horse Sugar Daddy! Tigger was the perfect fit! Only two weeks later, she and her new horse Tigger, aka A Frosty Knight, competed in FRC s Summer Sizzler. She was really nervous because she had not shown since she was 17, but everyone there was so helpful and professional. They persevered though the show and were excited to find a horse show scene where they felt really at home. She had always loved Dressage, even in Pony Club years ago, and knew Dressage was what she wanted to focus on with Tigger. Tigger acted like a champ at that first show, and it s just gotten better. He really likes hacking and trail rides too. For Jennifer, beginning to ride again helped her reconnect with that little kid inside who adored riding and being around horses. When she is not at the barn Jennifer loves spending time with her husband and daughter. They like to travel and this past Christmas, their family took a wonderful trip to Turks and Caicos, where they were able to ride horses on the beach and in the ocean. Adding equestrian activities that the whole family can enjoy is always a highlight for her. Be on the lookout for Jennifer and Tigger at FRC events this summer!
