2 News from NATAL: Team Natal did very well at the SA Champs in Cradock. We have the opportunity to showcase the Cape Boerperd at a big show in Natal next year. We have been asked to be involved with other breed societies who will also be hosting their regional championships at Karkloof next year we would be sharing the venue with the Appaloosas, Welsh ponies, S.A. Gerrit Vermeulen en Charlie Brown het weer die Siertuig kom wen op die SA Kampioenskappe. Jeanri Meyer en haar span het hul ook goed van hul taak gekwyd op Cradock. Did lyk tans of ons Kaapse Boerperd klasse op Phillipolis en ten minste nog twee Vrystaat skoue gaan aanbied. Kom ons ondersteun hierdie skoue sodat ons meer klasse kan kry. Nuus uit die Suid Kaap: George skou het van Aug 2012 plaasgevind en n paar van ons lede het die skou ondersteun en dit baie geniet. Kom ons bou hierdie skou ook weer uit tot n voorste Kaapse Boerperd skou. Oos Kaap Nuus: We had a good year without any reported African horse sickness cases. All our new members did well at the shows. Die SA Kampioenskappe is te Cradock aangebied met 104 Kaapse Boerperde wat deelgeneem het. Klasse was goed ondersteun en die gehalte van die perde baie goed. Die OP Boerperd en OP Saalperd subunie het n baie geslaagde gesamentlike prysuitdeling en afsluitings funksie te Port Elizabeth gehou. Perd en ruiter van die jaar toekennings is hier uitgedeel. In 2013 sal die OPBAU die funksie reël en ons moet dink aan n meer sentrale plek. THE CRADOCK SHOW 2012 The Replica Boerperd Stud of Clyde Pringle enjoyed a very successful Cradock Show this year. Three foals by Bey Event (senior breeding stallion) were entered. Majuba a colt owned by D Fetting, was second in the junior stallion championship Kings Memory a colt owned by C Pringle, was third in the junior stallion championship Kit Kat a mare owned by C Pringle, was third in the senior mare championship Results of the riding classes Majuba was first in the under 3 years three gaited Kings Memory was first in the under 5 three gaited In the hotly contested three gaited grand championship Kings Memory was second This is a remarkable feat as he was only sent for training in November 2011 and is still under 3 years of age. The new word on De-worming With new research on parasite control and drug resistance currently taking place at a rapid rate, equine deworming recommendations are also changing.

Different types and life stages of parasites flourish at different types of the year, and there are parasite seasons and off-seasons with huge differences in parasite transmission.

Check with your vet that the drugs you are using are not already showing resistance within your area. Don't treat adult horses during the off-season.

Don't treat the entire herd before moving to new pasture. Anthelmintic resistant eggs develop and are expelled via faeces during, and immediately after, deworming of the entire herd.

The good old "dose and move" advice is no longer recommended. Don't treat pregnant mares just prior to foaling.

Pregnant mares should be treated just like other adult horses; there is no real incentive for additional de-worming around foaling. Don't intentionally under-dose any anthelmintic treatment.

The effectiveness and safety on horses will be unknown and potentially dangerous.

The plasma concentrations of the active ingredient could be altered and the horse may very well be underdosed. Don't use a standard treatment program for all horses in a stable.

Don't treat at fixed interval frequencies year-round. Different types and life stages of parasites flourish at different types of the year, and there are parasite seasons and off-seasons with huge differences in parasite transmission. Don't rotate blindly between drugs. All the research that comes out shows rotation doesn't do much against slowing resistance if the drug used is already showing a resistance. Check with your vet that the drugs you are using are not already showing resistance within your area. Don't treat adult horses during the off-season. Adult horses should be treated during the active parasite season (i.e. grazing season) only. Treating them during winters is an unnecessary use of de-wormers. Don't treat the entire herd before moving to new pasture. Anthelmintic resistant eggs develop and are expelled via faeces during, and immediately after, deworming of the entire herd. If these resistant eggs are deposited in a clean pasture with no nonresistant parasite larvae to dilute the resistant ones, the vast majority of the parasites horses ingest will be drug resistant. While pregnant mares can harbour potentially dangerous parasites for foals, such as ascarids, the main source of parasite infection for young horses is the environment. Pregnant mares should be treated just like other adult horses; there is no real incentive for additional de-worming around foaling. Don't intentionally under-dose any anthelmintic treatment. Essentially, under-dosing only adds to the anthelmintic resistance problem by exposing parasites to a drug, but not at a high enough dose to kill them. Don't use formulations not labeled for horses. The effectiveness and safety on horses will be unknown and potentially dangerous. Products should not be administered in a different manner than intended, such as administering injectable dewormer into an apple and giving it to the horse. The plasma concentrations of the active ingredient could be altered and the horse may very well be underdosed. Don't use a standard treatment program for all horses in a stable. All horses on a specific farm will have different egg counts: some higher and some lower. Do treat individually. For example, a high egg shedder will need more aggressive treatment than a low shedder. Consider implementing fecal egg counts into horses' annual veterinary care to determine just how much de-worming they require. It is suggested that providing a basic treatment foundation for all horses of two yearly treatments with effective de-wormers to suppress a possible resurgence of the Strongylus species and tapeworm. High shedders should be treated more aggressively than low shedders. It was also noted that owners should de-worm younger horses more frequently than adult horses.
