2 CHAIRMANS ADDRESS Dear Members, After the very cold beginning to the month we are now enjoying a real heat wave; at least we do not need to carry wet weather clothes to the shows but instead need to carry water for the ponies instead! Included with this newsletter are the schedules for the National Shetland Show of Wales on the 1 st July at David Broome s and our Summer Show, which we will again be holding in conjunction with the NPS (Area 28) on Sunday 29 th July at Cothi Bridge Showground. We all very much appreciate your continued support at the Group s Shows and we have tried to keep our costs down wherever possible so that we do not have to increase entry fees etc. We would like any of our Junior Members to contact either Lisa Card or Frankie Currell to pass on suggestions or requests for anything you would like to see included in the Group s Calendar of events; or classes you would like to see included in one of our shows. Likewise any of our Members who have suggestions please contact any of the Committee Members it is your Group and we need your suggestions and feedback. Likewise any of you who would like to put pen to paper and write an article for the Newsletter; maybe how you started in Shetlands; interesting stories of previous horsey experiences or careers whatever you think would be of interest to fellow members we will be glad to hear from you. Advertisements for tack or ponies for sale can be extremely effective and the costs minimal. The Summer Group Show is to be held once again in conjunction with the NPS at the Cothi Bridge Showground in Nantgaredig on the 29 th July 2012 with Judges Mr and Mrs Jones, schedules are included. The popular Welsh National Shetland Show to be held at David Broome s near Chepstow on 1 st July 2012, this fantastic venue will host the huge number of classes of Shetland only fun, with some new coloured/palomino, cream etc Schedules are included. There are a host of national Qualifiers including Olympia, Chaps and NPS., stables are available at 16 and mobile homes at 100. It will be refreshing to have an event like this to look forward to after the hard Winter s gloom. A big thank you goes to Zoe Snape and Sandra for putting so much work into organising the show. We have received wonderful support and sponsorship, both locally and nationally, we do have classes available for sponsorship so please get in touch if you wish to sponsor a class Calling all young riders! Did you know about the S.P.S.B.S. performance awards? If not you are missing out on a brill party at Christmas, where the awards are presented, it is a lovely day with a wonderful buffet, and chance to see friends you only see in the summer. You start by contacting Mrs V Hampton or Mrs S Bearcroft. You get a set of cards per pony, you get points for everything you and your pony do, there are classes to include everyone from the very competitive to lead rein riders and even a class for those who can only do a few events there are also awards for dressage, showing, WHP, open M+M, first ridden and Pony Club to name a few. Also if you are thinking, you may like to have a go at the Shetland Grand National you need to be in the scheme for a year before you can have a go. Also you should try to come to the Performance Show at Malvern, a two day show with lots of fun classes to ride in, see the society website for details. Our heartfelt Congratulations on the marriage of Lara Stevens to Matt Joslin at St Cennydd's Church, Llangennith on Saturday the 12th May; the reception was held at the picturesque Weobley Castle afterwards. We wish the newly married couple every happiness for the future.

She had all ready taken part in theatre productions and pantomime. She appeared on stage with her owner the late Diana Grasby in Stratford Upon Avon, Bristol The Royal Opera Convent Garden. Seagull was photograph with Dame Margot Fonteyn. Seagull retired well in to her twenty s in Her part was then taken over by her daughter Ashorne Lisa who not only appeared in the ballet but took part in the Lord Mayor s Show in London. 12 The Age Of A Horse To tell the age of any horse Inspect the lower jaw, of course. The six front teeth the tale will tell, And every doubt and fear dispel. Two middle nippers you behold Before the colt is two weeks old. Before eight weeks two more will come; Eight months the corners cut the gum. The outside grooves will disappear From middle two in just one year; In two years from the second pair; In three years corners too, are bare. At two the middle nippers drop. At three the second pair can t stop. When four years old the third pair goes. At five a full new set he shows. The deep black spots will pass from view At six years from the middle two; The second pair at seven years; At eight the spot each corner clears. From middle nippers upper jaw At nine the black spots will withdraw. The second pair at ten are bright; Eleven finds the corners light. 13 THE WELLS STUD HISTORY The late Mr John P Sleigh at St John s Wells, Fyvie, founded the Wells Shetland Pony Stud in 1901 with the first Wells stud book entry in John Sleigh was a great Clydesdale breeder and had won many championships at local and national level and also won outright the renown Cawdor Cup at the Highland Show. He then went into Shetland ponies and continued the success. He was also twice president of the Shetland Pony Society and contributed a lot to the breed. The stud then continued to expand under the late Harry P Sleigh from 1947 with his original mares, Wells Saide, the dam of Wells Superb, Wells Elaine, the start of the Wells E line and Wells Vasha, the dam of numerous champions including the renown Wells Vijay, one of the most successful Shetland ponies bred, with 3 Royal Highland Show and 1 Royal Show championship. He continues, to leave his mark in the breed in Britain and abroad, even after his death at the age of 36 years in The stud continued to flourish during the 1950s and 1960s with around 2000 ponies being exported to America and numerous others sold to Australia, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, France Denmark and throughout Great Britain, providing the foundation stock for many studs. Harry Sleigh, in partnership with the late John Smith of Berry Farm, Shetland in the 1950 s bought and collected ponies from all over Britain and shipped them from Glasgow by Anchor shipping in boat loads of 250 to America, where they were in great demand. Mostly blacks were shipped with the notable Wells Trueform, whom was 1 st prizewinning stallion at Royal Highland Show being sold. Many of those exported ponies have won or produced champions in their new countries. Wells Rising Star, exported to George Barrett in Australia, has won several Shetland Pony championships at Sydney Show and various local shows. Wells Remarkable, sold to Australia to George Vyner and Wells Vintage sold to Lesley Kidd have also proved themselves in the show ring and in their breeding stock. Harry presented a trophy on behalf of the Sleigh family to the Sydney Show for the champion Shetland pony and the competition to win this is very high with classes of 30 ponies. Harry was a very sought after judge, who had the eye for picking out quality stock and he also had a passion for showing and would travel the length and breath of Great Britain showing with great success at numerous local and national level including the Royal Show, Royal Highland Show, the Great Yorkshire show and the Bath and West Show to name but a few. The stud s first Royal Highland Show championship was won in 1950 by Wells Prefect and now stands at a total of 30 Royal Highland and 16 Royal English to date. No other of today s studs has won the Royal Highland championship more than 4 times. The Stud is now growing with continuing success under Harry, Ann and Susan Sleigh, which consist of over 45 ponies. Based at St John s Wells and part of a 1200 acre farming enterprise, consisting of sheep, cattle and crops, the stud still continues to show, breed and export ponies. Wells Final Command, four times Royal Highland Show champion and Royal English was exported to France in 1990 for a record price in the breed, also five ponies were sold to France in 2000, which

14 have won numerous prizes at top level shows. With a successful show season this year, winning the Royal Northern Show at Thainstone, Champion and Reserve champion, the Reserve Overall Heavy Horse champion and also taking the converted St John s Wells Trophy for the best pair by the same sire at the Royal Highland Show this year. The stud was also overall Horse and Pony champion at Echt Show and at Turriff Show, which is the second largest show in Scotland, consisting of 140 Shetland ponies, mostly black, with top quality horses and ponies travelling from all over Scotland to win the championships. Wells Highlight II by Wells Vijay typifies the Shetland pony breed and remains unbeaten in his 9 year show career, winning the Royal Highland 4 times and the overall heavy horse championship, also the Royal Show and numerous local shows and now has produced strong youngsters who are now showing their potential. At the moment the stud has 4 breeding stallions who have all proved themselves in the ring and producing prize winning stock: Wells Rising Tide 3 times Royal Highland Show champion and Royal Show champion Wells Royal Command Reserve Royal Highland Show champion Wells Highlight II 4 times Royal Highland Show Champion, Overall Heavy Horse Champion at Highland Show, Royal Show champion, Overall Champion Royal Northern Show, twice Reserve Overall Horse and Pony champion at Turriff Show Wells Extra Special Junior Champion at Royal Highland Show The main breeding mares are: Wells Peach has produced top quality male and female lines Wells Paula - RHAS champion and Overall Champion Heavy Horse Wells Valerie has produced 7 registered, licensed stallions Wells Patience RHAS Junior champion The stud continues to expand, with many top quality ponies and youngsters coming up with Wells Masterclass, 2 year old colt by Wells Royal Command out of Wells Peach who has been unbeaten in his classes and will be put forward for his stallion assessment next year, Wells Royal Rebel, a yearling colt by Wells Rising Tide out of Wells Varlerie who has great promise and also a selection of top quality mares and fillies with showing and breeding potential who will hopefully carry the stud through another 100 years.

15 You should set up a regular 6 weekly worming programme for all your ponies, as worm infestation can be the cause of ill health. The symptoms include a potbelly a harsh staring coat and a generally listless appearance. Worms may retard the growth of your foals and may even lead to permanent stunting. Foals should be wormed from about 4 weeks old and then monthly after that until about 9 months old. The mare should be wormed at the same time. If at all possible your foal should have clean grazing that is grazing that has not been used by other ponies that year. This reduces the risk of it picking up worm larvae. Try and alternate wormers to avoid worms building up a tolerance to the drug and picking up manure from paddocks is also important. As with all medication you should consult your vet before initiating your worming programme. THERE ARE MANY TYPES OF WORMS THAT AFFECT YOUR PONIES:- Intestinal threadworms: can affect foals and may cause severe diarrhoea. The first wormer you give your foal should be effective against them. Ascarid worms: - can affect young ponies and may lead to blockages. Red worms: - can affect ponies of all ages and can cause a variety of symptoms from mild unthriftiness Right up to fatal colic. Pin worms: - or seat worms can cause anal irritation. Lungworms:- can cause severe coughing and are contracted when ponies graze with donkeys. Tapeworms: - can cause colic symptoms and most regular wormers do not kill tapeworms. Bots:- are generally thought to cause little problem and are picked up when bot flies lay their small white eggs on the ponies fur during the Summer months. They are then licked by the pony and make their way to the stomach Lice Lice infestations are very common in late winter and early spring, particularly in horses and ponies with plenty of hair. They are almost always associated with intense itchiness. Affected horses often rub off large patches of hair and can traumatise the skin to leave sores. The worst affected areas are usually the mane, forelock, lower neck and base of tail, although badly affected horses may have lice all over. Diagnosis Any horses showing intense itchiness in winter and early spring are quite likely to have lice. The lice are just big enough to be seen with the naked eye and can often be seen moving around. Louse eggs may also be seen as small white eggs attached to the hair shafts. There are different types of lice which can be identified by taking brushings Treatment Recommended products include those containing pyrethrum, which will kill the lice rather than just repel them. Most louse powders are merely repellents and are rarely enough to cure a chronic infestation. The easiest way to apply a pyrethrum product is in the form of a pour-on. This should be applied weekly for 4 weeks so any larvae hatching out of the Eggs are killed as well. If there are several horses to treat, it may be easier using a Barricade Spray. Powders can be applied to in contact horses to reduce the risk of infestation Transferring to them. Rugs should be washed or treated with powder or spray. Lice are Contagious to other horses so try to keep affected horses isolated if possible and monitor Other horses for signs of infestation. The louse species affecting horses cannon be passed On to humans but it is not impossible for them to give an occasion
