BREEDING VALUES CRUCIAL FOR SIRES OF 100-TONNERS The major CRV study into 100-tonners has shown that the sires breeding values are crucial in achieving high lifetime production. Bulls with large numbers of 100-tonners score highest for the main breeding values such as NVI (total merit index), longevity, udder health and conformation. The previous article in this series contains a table of 43 bulls which have produced the most 100-tonners per thousand daughters (starting period ). CRV conducted a major study of hundred-tonners involving over 910,000 cows. This study shows that the sires breeding values are crucial for high lifetime production. Newhouse Ronald leads with 14.7 daughters, followed by Etazon Laurel with 13.2 and Etazon Labelle with 12.2 daughters. Three groups The black-and-white bulls in the study were divided into three groups: ten bulls with the most 100-tonners, ten bulls with the fewest 100-tonners and a middle group of eighteen bulls (see Figure 1). The five red-and-white bulls are mentioned in a separate box in this article. All of these bulls have 99% reliability for all of their breeding values (NVI, production and conformation inheritance and usage traits). The reference date for the breeding values is december On average, these 43 bulls have 34,011 daughters in their breeding values, which makes for extremely reliable figures. Things that stand out If we look, in Figure 1, at the breeding value differences between the ten black-and-white bulls with the most100-tonners (average 11.2) and the group with the fewest 100-tonners (average 2.5) per thousand milking daughters, a number of things stand out. The figure presents a number of aspects such as NVI, longevity, udder health and conformation. The difference in NVI between the top and bottom group is striking, at over 154 points. As is the contrast in longevity, with a 385-day difference between the two groups. The daughters of the better group therefore stay on the farms for longer and produce more milk during that time, judging by the breeding value for milk inheritance in kg (the top group scores kg of milk and the bottom group kg). Lifetime production category during the NRM 2012 dairy show. In the future, there will be more animals with high lifetime production because the breeding values of the current generation of breeding bulls are much higher than those of the bulls from the generation analysed 8 HOLSTEIN Nuusbrief April 2014

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN RED AND BLACK The five red-and-white bulls with the most 100-tonners have the largest average number of milking daughters (25,596) per bull. At the same time, they score low in terms of percentage of 100-tonners compared with the black-and-white bulls. The main reason for this low score is the fact that the breeding value for kg of milk for these bulls is significantly lower than for the black-and-white bulls (average: -1,323 kg of milk) and the average longevity, at -40 days, is significantly lower than for the black-and-whites (+185). Figure 1 - Breeding values of the five R&W bulls (December 2012) bull- NVI kgs milk longevity udder health conformation per mille/ name 1000 daughters Liza 97 s Caveman ,1 Clara s Orkan ,8 Poos Hilltop ,7 Marty ,5 Allure ,9 Udder and udder health Both udder shape and udder health help to determine the longevity of the cow. The top group scored an average breeding value for udder of 99, the middle group (of 18 bulls) scored 97.8 on average and the bottom group 94.5 points: a difference in breeding value of 4.5 points. Regarding udder health, the top group won with a breeding value of 103, while the bottom group, with 100.9, is still just above average. Conformation shows a difference of over three points between the top and bottom groups. The udder makes an important contribution, with 4.5 points, but there is also a difference in terms of legs. The top group, with a breeding value of 100, scores precisely on the average while the bottom group, with 98.1, scores nearly two points lower. The differences for frame and dairy strength between the groups are one point or less. The bottom group s fertility, at 103.1, does appear to be better than that of the top group, which scores just above average with points. Late maturing and persistency are often mentioned, but there is little difference with regard to the former. The top group scored for late maturing, while the bottom group, with points, is still just above the average. The difference for persistency was slightly greater. The better group was around average, with 99.9 points, while the bulls from the bottom group scored 97 points. Reliable breeding values The differences between these large groups of daughters show extremely clearly that the breeding values are very reliable. Housing, nutrition and care are also important of course. But because this study involved over 910,300 animals on a large number of different farms, these factors are not taken into consideration as those conditions also apply to all of their stall mates. The consistent use of allround bulls with high breeding values is therefore very attractive. Etazon Addison picks up the baton The provisional figures for show that Newhouse Ronald s baton has been picked up by Addison, with 15.3 hundred-tonners per thousand daughters born. Etazon Addison has a very strong milk inheritance (+1,937 kg) and his daughters are quick to reach the 100-tonne mark. However, it is not appropriate to include these data in the calculation at this stage because the daughters of the other bulls who pass on slightly lower milk yields are still to show what they have to offer; they just need a bit of time. 14 Enthusiasm I S C O N T A G I O U S! Great udders in the first lactation group exhibited by Bull van Rensburg Champion cow of the event went to this tremendous Matt daughter owned by Lourens and Tula Gildenhuys When I received the first correspondence for the 2014 Eastern Cape Holstein Club s annual herd competition from club chairman, Bull van Rensburg, this line was at the bottom of the page and after a very successful event it proved to be just that, a jam packed 2 days filled with enthusiasm for the Holstein cow. And if you didn t have it when you got there, you certainly left with a hefty dose of Holstein enthusiasm to go home with! The first day was judged in sweltering heat close to 40 degrees Celsius and the second day was cool and rainy like only the Tsitsikamma can be. Extreme weather did not dampen the spirits of the many farmers, sponsors and industry partners that accompanied the event to every farm and with lively discussions, mostly on cows, outside the judging ring everyone attending played their part. There was also very good interaction between judges and spectators and the event proved to be as much educational and thought provoking as it was fun and social. Judges Andrew Masterson and Stephen Mains-Sheard had their work cut out for them as the quality of animals in each herd was outstanding. 7 herds were judged during the 2 days representing a total number of cows of around The competition started with a scorcher of a first day at the herd of Rean van Schoor, Lourens and Tula Gildenhuys and finished off at Daan Landman. The second rainy day started off at Dawfred Ferreira then went on to Vernon Basson, Bull van Rensburg and lastly Heinrich van Rensburg with the prize giving dinner at Joe Fish restaurant in Cape St Francis. Each herd presented the judges with groups of 5 of their first lactation cows, second lactation cows and third lactation or older cows. Also shown on every farm were numerous Judges Andrew Masterson and Stephen Mains-Sheard were very impressed by this third lactation and older group by Heinrich van Rensburg Great attendance in the rain at the herd of Dawfred Ferreira Judge Andrew Masterson discussing some fo the cows at Rean van Schoor The second lactation group at Lourens and Tula Gildenhuys caused lots of discussion 14 HOLSTEIN Nuusbrief April 2014

daughter groups of A.I. sires representing bulls from North America, Europe, Australasia and South Africa and also the current highest producing cow on each farm. Although it was only 7 cows during the whole event that posed as the highest producer on each farm the similarities between these hard working cows were striking! All of these cows were moderate in size with great dairy strength, excellent body capacity and with solid udders and good feet and legs. A great example of what every dairyman wants on his farm. Even though we were in a grazing area every breeder still has his own breeding goals and it was very interesting to see how every farmer is tackling the issues specific to his farm and circumstances. The herd of Vernon Basson walked away with the most points and the judges commented on the exceptional uniformity of all the cows presented by Vernon with dairy strength and body capacity a standout feature of the herd. Every herd however showed groups of cows of exceptional quality and if the Easter Cape breeders that participated in this competition would put together a team of cows to take to shows across the country I believe they would be very hard to beat! There was also recognition given to individual cows and here the honours went to a truly spectacular second lactation Matt daughter owned by Lourens and Tula Gildenhuys as overall champion cow of the event. The reserve champion cow went to a powerful, great uddered cow owned by by Bull van Rensburg. On the cow side the take home message for me was definitely the importance of dairy strength, it was a strong reminder that it is a very important trait not to be overlooked. The cows that had more dairy strength were definitely the ones that handled themselves easier under very demanding conditions. Even in 40 degrees Celsius the cows that had sufficient dairy strength were chewing their cud while others lacking in strength were panting and clearly suffering. The group of high producers were also a clear example of what a long lasting, functional productive cow should look like. Of course we saw great uddered cows too and as a whole the whole competition was characterized by good udder quality all round. We were excited by beautiful first calvers and stood in awe looking at great old cows that had stood the test of time. A cow lovers heaven! On the people side there is a whole lot to be positive about, the enthusiasm with which the event was organized, the number of people attending, the lively discussions on cows and the dairy industry and of course the celebration afterwards is something to be proud of! This event is one not to be missed for many good reasons, make sure you are in attendance next year to be infected with some East Cape Holstein enthusiasm! In the new parlour at Bull van Rensburg where all were treated to a very good lunch as well as good cows Hot afternoon at Daan Landman The judges involved the spectators at Heinrich van Rensburg with some interesting opinions and discussion as a result The high producer at Rean van Schoor is a good example of what these cows looked like throughout the event. Strong, dairy, hard working, profit making! Big crowd with judges wearing raincoats at Vernon Basson, herd with the most points in the competition The group of second lactation cows at Vernon Basson showed lots of dairy strength, body capacity and good udders! 16 HOLSTEIN Nuusbrief April 2014

DO 100-TONNERS HAVE MORE VOLUME THAN AVERAGE? Hundred tonners have more volume than average is a generally accepted claim. Figures from our type classifiers give surprising results, showing that inheritance from the bull has a major influence. But the cows have also grown four cm in ten years. To answer the question of whether 100-tonners have more volume than average, CRV looked at the data from our type classifiers and, in particular, at the score for the trait of volume. Type classifiers assess the animals conformation. The first time, they are assessed as heifers; second or subsequent assessments are voluntary at a later age. Volume is scored on a scale from 1 to 9, with 5 as the average. 1 stands for low volume and 9 for high volume. Not all 100-tonners have a conformation assessment, but eight out of ten do. For our study, we looked at over 12,000 hundred-tonne cows that had all been assessed as heifers by our type classifiers. Two or more assessments were carried out on close to 3,000 cows. The most recent assessments for this group of animals are included in the tables. Table 1 Stature and volume of the 100-tonners from year of first number of size volume calving tonners (cm) (av. is 5.0) Volume and height not linkedtable 2 contains a list, by sire, of averages for height and volume for cows scored both as heifers and at their last inspection. Almost 3,000 of these cows were also inspected later in life and, as expected, their volume had increased. The cows inspected score 5.4 on average as heifers; at their last assessment, the average had risen to 6.6. The table shows that an increase in height is not necessarily accompanied by an increase in volume. The daughter groups are ranked by sire on the score for volume as heifers. Note that the sires who scored an average of 5.4 or lower for volume all scored at least a point higher at their last inspection. The other daughter groups who scored 5.5 or higher as heifers show a smaller increase in volume later in life. Fast yield = high volume Table 3 shows a clear link between the number of days in milk needed to produce a hundred tonnes, and height and the score for volume. Cows that are quick to yield 100,000 kg of milk score above-average for volume. Cows that take much longer score lower for volume. We believe this has a variety of causes. Cows that produce 100 tonnes of milk quickly do need to have the necessary capacity, and hence sufficient volume. Considering the height, the faster 100-tonners also come from the later part of the period However, we do need to be aware that the national milk production recording (MPR) average in 1990 was 6,873 kg of milk! so it is logical that cows from that time should take a lot longer to reach the 100-tonne mark. Coba 47 is a well-known cow in the Netherlands: in 2011, she emerged as the best farmer s cow in the cow elections organised by the dutch Melkvee Magazine. Lava daughter Coba 47 is now over fourteen years old. she is currently dry and due to calve again in mid- April. Lifetime production: 11 lactations 3,817 days 127,813 kg milk 4.37% fat and 3.58% protein, with 10,167 kg fat and protein. Average lactation value: 123. As a heifer, Coba 47 scored 82 for frame, 87 for udder, 80 for legs and 83 for general appearance. Her height is 143 cm and she scored 5 for volume. In November 2011 she was scored again at the age of 13 and found to be 1 cm taller. she also scored an extra point for volume, taking her to six points. Her udder score rose to 91 and leg score to 88. As a result, her general appearance score went up six points to 89. We currently have four generations of Cobas on the farm, and they all score average as regards volume, says Harry. But they do all score above-average for udders and legs and, also as far as production is concerned, we are very happy with this cow family. 18 HOLSTEIN Nuusbrief April 2014

NEWHOUSE RONALD DELIVERS THE MOST 100-TONNERS! Bull choice determines the chance of getting a hundred tonner, according to recent research. The breeding values NVI (total merit index), longevity and udder health are the most important traits. CRV has studied cows that calved for the first time from 1996 to 2000 and later went on to earn the title of hundred tonner. The cows from that time have by now had a chance to produce over 100 tonnes of milk. Because import bulls are often used selectively, they are seen more as an exception so are not included in the selection. The study produced a ranking of 43 bulls (Table 1). The breeding values associated with these bulls are very informative. Once again it appears that the breeding values are right, because the ten bulls with the highest scores on crucial aspects such as NVI, longevity and udder health have much better breeding values than the group with the lowest scores. Time window for younger generation This time window from 1996 to 2000 gives us the younger generation of bulls. This makes for a fairer comparison because the cows breeding values rise every year, so that cows which started in 1985 stand a much lower chance of producing a hundred tonnes than those which started in There are spectacular differences between the 43 bulls which have produced 100-tonners. The top bull is Newhouse Ronald, with 14.7 hundredtonners per thousand daughters born, the Dutch average, which is between one and two 100-tonners per thousand daughters born. This study is based on large numbers of animals. The 43 bulls sired a total of 918,039 milking daughters in that period: an average of 21,349 daughters per bull. Of those, percent (121 daughters) earned the title of 100-tonner. The best-known bulls In the period to 1996, Tops scored the most hundredtonners. In this time window from , Tops and Sunny Boy score in the middle bracket, Cash and Celsius score twice as much as Jabot (3.9), who - after Sunny Boy - was the most popular bull in that period, with 93,086 daughters. The Etazon and Delta programmes score very well, with no fewer than nineteen bulls in the ranking. Etazon Laurel (13.2) and Etazon Labelle (12.2) finish in second and third place respectively. The leader until 2001 was Newhouse Ronald, with as many as 14.7 hundred-tonners per thousand daughters. The bull Newhouse Ronald (sire Aerostar) gave a breeder the best chance of producing a hundredtonner. Ronald is out of Ingrid 66 (sire Secret), one of the first privatelyowned heifers on the Delta test farm in Kollum. At the time, she was the first heifer with 4.03% protein in her first 305 days list. Three of her daughters were later promoted to donor at the test station in Kollum: further evidence of the strength of this special cow family. Breeder Jan Nieuwenhuizen from Zevenhoven has a very productive herd with excellent breeding values. As a secret breeding tactic, he based his breeding strategy on the breeding values with one hard and fast rule: always use bulls with a high Inet AND good udders and legs. When genomic selection came along, we were among the first to place it our faith in it. In our experience, genomic selection is almost a hundred percent effective. HOLSTEIN Newsletter April
