1 R O C K I N G H A M F O R E S T NEWSLETTER February 2017 Chairman s Chat Welcome to the February newsletter. I recently attended the first training of year (as a spectator) on Sunday 22 nd January. This was in preparation for the Area Indoor Showjumping qualifier and was held at Red Piece Stables. The instructor was John Thelwall. It was a very informative afternoon and from the rider feedback I received all had a very good time. My thanks to Antonia and Sophie for providing the venue and John for giving up his time. Although not compulsory I would urge anyone taking part in a riding club team to join in as it really is a good way to meet others in your team and receive very good instruction. Don t forget to come along and support your riding club. The Showjumping qualifier is on Sunday 12 th February at Houghton Hall and the dressage on Sunday 26 th February at Keysoe. Further details can be obtained from the riding club website. Hope to see you there. Tony

5 Club Training & Social Events The most talked about subject must surely be the weather, I must say it is so very changeable now, one day thermals and woolly hats, and might I add the RFRC ones are brilliant and very good value, and the next day thinking wistfully of summer garden furniture. Ah, well, I don't fancy living anywhere else, especially as we have so much to look forward to this year. During this month, our social evening with Carol Brady was most informative. There was about a dozen of us congregated at the Friar, numbers a little low, I felt but a jolly evening was had by all. Food was delicious as usual, had I known the quantity I would have missed dinner. The dressage writers job is ultimately to write for the judge but also to make the job stress free. Unfortunately, it doesn't help the riders at all, as there were a lot of green faces at the following Sunday's competition. We were told it's a must to fill in all relevant information at the top of the sheet, also not to panic if you get a little behind, but the marks always come first before the comment and are the most important, the judge can then recap on the test. Some spelling mistakes can be ignored but clear writing is a must. We went through most abbreviations which was most helpful as there never seems to be enough space on the sheet. It is also the writers job to ensure that the riders and their numbers tally with those on the list, so to those of you who do compete in this discipline it is a good idea to give your number to the writer before the judge rings the bell. I have been asked if we will run another evening for writing. Yes, if enough of you ring and say you would like one. The dressage competition the following Sunday went off very well although it was later. The times didn't suit everyone but for others it did. Kelly has done the results, so well done everyone. Also, I have the guidelines for dressage writers as drawn up by BD if anyone would like one. Forthcoming events Friday February 10 sees our yearly Team training talk. The venue, at Cranford Village Hall, starts at 7.30 and will be hosted by your Team leaders of Antonia for Juniors and Sophie for Seniors. Roger and Rose who are usually on hand with queries for hats, tagging and flu vacs will be attending if available. This meeting is open to all who would like to be in a Team for the Club regardless of whether you have done so before, or that you may be a new member or that you may be interested in the future. Please go and give these hard-working ladies your support. Sunday Feb 12th dressage competition at Moulton Sunday March 12th dressage competition at Moulton Saturday March 18th sees the first of our training sessions at Alley Farm, Lowick. This is for flat work, schooling and running in to dressage later. The instructor for this afternoon is Di Strickland who many of you will remember from last year. These sessions start at 2pm and again at 3pm and 4pm. Come and enjoy meeting other Club members and gaining knowledge and, of course, you are welcome to bring a friend. Don't forget that this year the Club is subsidising all training sessions, so members will only be charged 15 but non-members will still be charged 23. I have a few bookings already so don't forget to ring me first and get a time. Payment on the day. Sunday March 29 - show jumping competition at Glebe Farm, Bozeat. Friday 24th March another of our social and instructional evenings, again at the Old Friar Twywell, Pete and Katy are very accommodating, 7.30pm for 8pm, fence judge training with Roger and Rose Batten. 'Singing off the same hymn sheet' as we always put it. All the rules and regulations, does and don'ts of fence judging at a hunter trial, the first one of ours is in May. As you will probably know we need two persons at each fence when we put on this event so we would love to

6 see you at this evening to explain what we do. There is no charge for this evening and we put on table snacks for those who haven't had time to eat beforehand. Hope to see you there. Forthcoming in April we start our training in earnest, 3 disciplines and a demo by your Chairman plus one of our honorary members and judges. Today I had a meeting with Andrew Baker of the Wildlife Trust and between us agreed on the new permissive bridle path in Hills and Dales at Cranford. This path will now join two public bridleways, one from Twywell/Slipton Corner and one from Cranford. This will now allow riders to ride either way in safety and/or a circular route from either end. I am assured that this work will start within the next few weeks, so by the time spring arrives, those of us in this vicinity and others that like hacking elsewhere, will be able to enjoy this very pretty route once again. See you all soon Hazel Tel: mob: or text A huge thank you to Horseware House LTD for sponsoring our teams with our lovely new saddle cloths

12 Rockingham Forest Riding Club is run by a committee of volunteers. We run competitions to raise funds in order to subsidise the training and social events we provide. We know you are all busy, but these events are being organised for you and WE REALLY DO NEED YOU so PLEASE find a bit of time to give the faithful few some help. Whenever we organize an event, we always need lots of helpers. We are dependent on our parents, friends and connections to provide that help as without it the events simply cannot happen. We ask that each member s family/friends volunteer to help at a minimum of one event each year. we do keep a list of those who have helped!! The more people who volunteer as helpers, the less the onus falls on the faithful few, so please put your name forward to help in some capacity. Don t underestimate yourself we desperately need people to do a wide range of jobs and you don t need to be an expert you just need to be willing! We will give you any instruction/training you may need so don t worry if you think you haven t a clue we can help! Quite apart from anything else, helping at events is good fun, sociable and gets you away from the daily humdrum for a while! The following gives you an idea of the sort of help we need:- Catering, Fence Judging, Stewarding, Tack checking, Lorry park stewards, Score collectors, Scorers, Show-jumping poll pickers, putting up show-jumps and taking them down at the end of the day, flagging cross-country course, Maintenance of equipment, Storage and transport of equipment, Dressage writers, Taking round refreshments etc. etc. etc. We often need some professional help at our events, i.e. doctor, vet, farriery, paramedic, etc. so again, please let us know if you would be prepared to help in a professional capacity. Thank you. Please contact Kelly Bellham rfrc@hotmail.co.uk Phone/Text:

16 I m a Rider Psychology Coach, specialising in helping riders overcome competition nerves at RC and grassroots level upwards across eventing, dressage and Showjumping. I m running a talk at The College EC Keysoe on Thursday 2 March. It s called Compete with Confidence In 2017 and is aimed at riders who get nervous and want to learn how to overcome competition nerves. It s ideal for RC members, particularly those who compete in the RC teams. I m currently running a special offer on tickets. The standard price is 20 per ticket, but I m currently offering tickets at 12 each or 2 for 20. Here s the link for more information and to book: leadpages.co/compete- confidence keysoe/ If you think this would be of interest to your Rockingham Forest RC members, it would be great if you could share it with them. I m launching this series of talks for 2017 across a number of RC areas following the success of my 2016 talks, which were attended by a total of 300 riders. Here is a link to a testimonial on my website from one rider who attended one of my 2016 talks and found it helped her overcome nerves following a fall from her horse: ng.co.uk/project/emily/ My talk is focused on the application of sports psychology in equestrian sport and is designed to provide practical and simple steps for riders to help them overcome nerves and build their confidence. If you d like to enquire about organising a talk for Rockingham Forest RC then please feel free to get in touch and I d be happy to discuss this with you. Best wishes Helen Helen Rennie Rider Psychology Coach Mobile ADVERT DIY Livery available for 2 geldings from mid-february in Woodford. 17 Book Corner The evenings are beginning to get longer and even the weather has warmed up a bit, great news. I have now read my new book called Soldier, Spy by Tom Marcus. A biographical look at what MI5 gets up to. It really is very exciting as he describes various operations they get involved with and how they leave not a trace. It is quite comforting to know that they are on our streets keeping us as safe as possible in these trying times. Another book that I have been given and am looking forward to reading is called Cows in Trees. A memoir by a retired vet called Julian Earl. It is full of funny stories of what animals get up to when they try to avoid the vet! I will keep you posted. Jenny Can any of you recommend a book? If so, please let me know and I will include it in a future Newsletter. Just include title, author and publisher plus a short critique. RFRC Committee Meetings The Committee meets usually on the first Monday of the month at Stanwick Working Men s Club, Stanwick. If any of you have issues, complaints, praises for the Riding Club, then please do contact one of the Committee members beforehand so that it can be brought up at the following meeting. The dates for 2017 are as follows: Monday, 6 th March, 3 rd April, 8 th May, 5 th June, 3 rd July, 7 th August, 4th September, 2 nd October, 6 th November, 4 th December.
