2 Committee News Call for committee roles - Your club needs you! We are still looking for committee members to help us run the club. We hope to have a new website up and running soon so any techy folk out there who could help to keep it updated as events are organised would be great or if you would just like to come and share some of the load there's always something to do! We always welcome fresh input and it is not as demanding as you think it is! Emma Winter Dressage The Winter Dressage Series is now on hold until 4 th February when it will be held indoors at Thornton House so please come along and have ago or come along and help out to see what it s like and get inspired for the summer series. The schedule and entry form can be found at the end of the newsletter Flatwork Clinics Heidi Hutchinson Flatwork Clinics For those that have attended the Heidi Flatwork Clinics at the Club field over the last year, we have decided to move to Heidi's yard for these lessons in Heidi is based in Copmanthorpe, Post Code is YO23 3TL, which is easy to get to and is only about 5 mins off the A64. She has a 20 x 60 arena with mirrors across one end and there is also a heated teaching hut next to the arena so spectators can make coffee and keep warm - BIG advantage in this weather! The cost of these lessons will be the same as when held at the Club Field, i.e. 20 for 30 mins and 30 for 45 mins. The dates are Sunday 7th January; Sunday 28th January; Sunday 25th February; Sunday 25th March. All commencing at 10:00 am. We sre also hoping to organise some grid work lessons at Askham Bryan in March, more details will follow once the dates are agreed, Sarah

3 Area 4 Jumping AREA 4 INDOOR SHOWJUMPING NOVICE & INTERMEDIATE QUALIFIER Bishop Burton College, York Road, Bishop Burton, Beverley, HU17 8BG Saturday 24 th February 100/110 + (these classes may run on Sunday if entries low) Sunday 25 th February 80/90 This event is open to Senior and Junior members, the 80cm is for teams only, all other classes are teams & individuals. Riders jump two rounds. The second round is timed and these times are used to determine minor placing s when faults cannot do this. If there is equality for first place after the second round then there will be a jump off against the clock. The best three scores in each round will count for the total score. Horses/ponies must be 5 years and over. Max Height (1 st round) Max Width (1 st round) Max Width Triple Bar (1 st round) NOVICE 80cm 85cm 100cm 85cm INTERMEDIATE 90cm 95cm 115cm 95cm Max Height (2 nd Round) INTERMEDIATE 100cm 105cm 130cm 105cm INTERMEDIATE 110cm 115cm 145cm 115cm If you qualify then you will be need to be able to go to the championships. The Intermediate Winter Championships will take place on April 2018 at Bury Farm Equestrian Village, Bedfordshire, The Novice Winter Championships will take place April 2018 Arena UK, Lincolnshire Horses/ponies vaccinations must be up to date and correct on their passports (flu vac checker is on the BRC website). Hats will need to be checked and tagged at the competition. (Details of current standards on the BRC website). Entry form at the end of the newsletter Representing club at area competitions: As we about to start a run of area qualifiers I thought it worth giving members an insight behind the scenes into what is involved in putting teams forward for area qualifiers, some of you may know already whilst others who didn't attend the AGM maybe unaware. Entries are still incredibly manual, lots of form filling and numerous s between committee, competitors and area 4 entries secretary, throw in the added complication of checking vaccination certificates are correct and up to date it

4 Area 4 Tips makes for an huge administrative undertaking. On top of the entry fee that riders pay to enter (which goes directly to area 4 to help cover cost of running qualifier) there is also something called a prelim fee (this goes straight the BRC HQ to pay for rosettes at area qualifiers and the cost of running the corresponding championships). This prelim fee used to be discretionary for the clubs to pay and usually only paid for those teams or individuals who were likely to qualify but at the Area 4 AGM in July it was decided that no area entries would be accepted if the prelim fee had not been paid, so it is now compulsory for all rider/teams put forward which means it now costs the club to send riders to area qualifiers regardless of numbers, experience or capability. This prelim fee varies between per team and per individual depending on the qualifier discipline and is not refunded for withdrawals after close of entries. Some other clubs in our area pass this cost on their riders to pay on top of the entry fee, we do not want to end up in this position. We also subsidised some training for the recent winter dressage qualifier which was well received and this is a theme we hope to continue for other qualifiers so please do support events and activities we run as a club as this all goes in to the pot to pay for things such as this to benefit you as a members. All we ask is our riders reciprocate the same level of commitment the club has, area qualifiers are great competitions and entry fees are very reasonable for the standard of competition so we hope to see lots of you come forward to represent the club over the next year, Kind regards Emma Representing the Riding Club at Area Qualifier Events For those of you who have not represented the Club at Area Qualifiers before, it may be helpful to point you in the direction of some guidelines/tips to help you. The BRC Rulebook is a rather large document (a mere 260 pages!) but certain parts of it are especially relevant when representing the Club. It covers horse and rider eligibility, permitted rider dress (e.g. hats, body protectors, spurs) and permitted horse dress (e.g. martingales, bits etc.). The Rulebook is available at: It is relevant to note that the BRC Rulebook says "Making an entry for any official BRC Competition constitutes acceptance of these rules. It is the responsibility of competitors, team managers, stewards and officials to ensure that they are fully conversant with these rules". Please read in particular the following sections of the Rulebook: Section G7: Equine Influenza (all about flu vaccinations) (page 13) Section G20.2: Working In (page 22) Section C: Codes of Conduct (page 27) There are particular rules relating to the discipline in which you want to compete e.g. permitted tack, length of spurs. Please look into these too.

5 We look forward to welcoming lots more members to represent the Club at this year s Area Qualifiers. It is a step outside the Club events and a chance to compete elsewhere Bishop Burton, Richmond, Breckenbrough, at a fraction of the cost of an affiliated discipline s entry fee. Swapping rosettes for cups of tea or coffee The Club provides the catering for the Summer Season competitions held at the Club field. It can therefore offer a deal to rosette winners, who can trade in a rosette they have just won for a cup of tea or coffee instead. This swap makes a small saving for the Club funds and we are looking after the pennies
