FROM THE PRESIDENT FROM THE EDITOR Dear Fellow FAHR Members, I would like to welcome the new members and thank those who have renewed their memberships for Spring is on its way, it has been a long and cold winter. It's the time to deeply reflect on what we've achieved during the warmer months. It's also the perfect time to ponder where we're headed in life, as we'll feel more inclined to put our plans into action in the Spring. In today s continued downturn economy and the politics of the ApHC two conflicting notions are battling it out in my head. The Dream of owning Foundation Bred Appaloosas and the dawning irony of not being able to breed or sell them. I ve come to the conclusion that the cavalry is not coming and that it s up to each one of us to Git er done. When I was elected FAHR president, I had a list of goals I wanted to accomplish during my term in office. I was determined to keep trying and to keep pushing. Doing my best with the hand that I have and not to give up the fight. The horse industry in the nation is a little-recognized giant. The business generated by horses totals BILLIONS of dollars. The Billion- Dollar Facts Horses are a major segment American agriculture. Horses rank as the fourth largest source of recreation in the United States. Horses also mean entertainment. Spectators attend a wide variety of equine sporting events. Horses play an important role in the personal development of young and old alike. Management and proper care of horses teach responsibility and appreciation for humane care of living things. Horses play a vital role in therapeutic programs, such as riding for the handicapped and care programs in juvenile homes. Defying economic analysis, horses are an enduring link to the simpler times gone by. The attraction between man and horse has withstood millions of years and economic changes. Newborn foals frolicking in a spring pasture, horse-drawn carriages carrying newlyweds down a city street, draft horses plowing an Amish field and the look on a child s face as she trots along on her first pony are priceless sights and will endure as long as there are horses and people. Public horse trails help to preserve natural areas which otherwise may be developed for commercial purposes. The outlook for the horse industry is bright following very encouraging data based upon its market research. One in three U.S. households wants to own or ride a horse! 2.2% of American households currently own horses. 7.9% are current riders. 4.9% of Americans are interested in owning a horse. 13.3% are interested in riding a horse. The outlook for the horse industry is bright it can and will be advanced by the Horsemen s Council and also in cooperation with other horse organizations representing all facets of this immense and important industry. Sincerely, John Hess John Hess FAHR President Hello, I saw a small group of Robins yesterday and Spring is definitely on the way. I keep telling myself that as I shut down the barns at night and drain the water pipes so they don t freeze. It has been a very cold and wet winter and I for one am eager for some warmer, dryer weather. In these last weeks of winter I am going to take the opportunity of being housebound to clean all my tack. My saddles could use a good cleaning and polishing as well as my headstalls. I have a veritable mountain of horse tack needing to be washed as well, from lead lines to halters and horse blankets. You know the saying The only way to end of with 10 horse blankets in good condition after a winter is to start out with 30, well that s where I m at right now. This winter has been hard on my farm as well. I lost two sections of my rail fence due to falling branches and I have several roofs on the barns and out buildings that are going to need repair. I started painting the barns last fall and that is a project that is going to need to be finished as soon as the weather changes. I was able to plow two sections of pasture for reseeding next month and as long as the rain doesn t wash out the seed I should have two nice fields for some light grazing come June. During one wind storm the neighbors 12 ft. metal building came flying through several of my pastures taking out fencing as it came. This too will need to be repaired, as well as numerous gates, stall doors, feed boxes, etc. After reading the list of things I have to do when the weather improves it leaves we scratching my head wondering if maybe winter isn t such a bad time of year after all. Eddie Street Editor 3

FAHR BUSINESS SADDLE LOG NEWS Congratulations to Vickie Grant who has over 500 hours. Vickie is the winner on hours in the saddle for the FAHR Saddle Log Program. Ginger Karns is right behind Vickie with over 400 hours. Bill Wicklund last year alone, has over 100 hrs. Nell Weber, Dawn Bates and Rachel Bates are keeping us in suspense - I hope their surprise to us are many hours in the saddle. Rachel has done well showing her horse I know she s had to put in hours of practice. Jean Adelson thought she was going to win the award again this year for having the least number of hours riding. Your FAHR Saddle Log Director, Deanna Brown, actually came in under Jean for hours ridden (10 hours for the year- yuck). I hope I never have those kind of numbers again! Get some credit and give yourself a goal for hours in the saddle - JOIN THE FAHR SADDLE LOG PROGRAM. FAHR would like to take this opportunity to welcome new members Suzanne Landreville Ancienne-Lorette Qc,Ca G2E-3J7 Claudia & Christian Glunk Switzerland, CH-5062 Maury Lawson Williamstown, MA Larry and Lori Colley & family Dusty, Cary, James, Theresa, Colton Terlton, OK FAHR appreciates your support in our effort to preserve, protect, and promote the Foundation Appaloosa Breed Horse. ********************************* Hello, I really admire the Foundation Appaloosa and I think my mare is eligible for FAHR but I don t know how to figure the percentages. I know the ApHC FPD uses a different scale then FAHR so where do I go to find out how to figure the Appaloosa in my horse. (Editor s note) This is actually a two issue inquiry. A small graph on how to figure the Appaloosa blood is on page 35 of this issue. I hope to have our President answer the second portion of this letter in the Questions and Answers section of the Spring newsletter. As spring and summer are just around the corner so again is the problem of flies. Over the years I have tried several home remedies, some which have worked to a degree but with other accompanying problems. In the past I have tried slathering copious amounts of a popular bath product all over my horses bodies because a friend said it would keep the flies off. I m not really sure if it was what detracted the flies or the abnormal amount of dirt It s my wife s coffee...it kills flies like crazy. now stuck to my horses skin from the oil based product. haven t tried this one yet because I am at a quandary as to how I could place these cloves without the barn cats or horses getting into them. Next we tried feeding brewers yeast in the hopes it would be a deterrent. That was rather unsuccessful as I could not get the horses to eat the grain after I dumped the yeast into it, so I m not sure if that works or not. One home remedy we tried was spraying the horse down with a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water. This was somewhat effective but the whole time I was in the barn the overwhelming smell of vinegar was more than I could take. I never was a big pickle fan. Another home remedy suggested placing large quantities of cloves in and around the stalls. Flies supposedly do not care for the smell of cloves and will leave the area. I My last attempt at fly removal came about with the advice of a friend who told me to hang a bag of water in the midway of the barn by each stall window and outside in the stall doorway. I felt foolish doing this but if it would work... unfortunately the only thing that worked was me putting up these bags of water. If you know of any remedy to safely deter flies I would love to hear it. I am very reluctant to use any pesticides so any ideas must be a natural substance. Please send your estreet@cco.net. ideas to 17

Going The Extra Mile! The Foundation Appaloosa stallion Shavano has been inducted into the Appaloosa Horse Club s Hall of Fame in large part due to the efforts of Bonnie Newitt, President of the Sundance 500 International organization and it s members. What sparked Bonnie s passion to have Shavano inducted into the Hall Of Fame was an article written by Sherry Byrd, long-time Appaloosa enthusiast, for the Sundance Newsletter. Bonnie, Sherry and Sandy Dean then went to work and collected every magazine article printed about Shavano, all of the known photos and ads as well as Sherry s article and submitted this to the Appaloosa Horse Club along with his nomination for induction. Below is a copy of the first letter sent to the ApHC, and it is of great interest that this process started nearly eight years ago. These three tenacious women continued year after year to submit for nomination Shavano F-1679 for the Appaloosa Hall of Fame. Finally this fine Foundation stallion has been inducted into the 2010 ApHC Hall of Fame. A remarkable accomplishment, almost as remarkable as the horse himself. For more information on Shavano, go to the FAHR Tidings archives, the fourth quarter issue of October 1, 2003 Appaloosa Horse Club Inc. Hall of Fame Coordinator 2720 W. 21 Ben Johnson s Rocky Mountain High By Stella Byrd Appaloosa News~July, One of the best Western artists of our time, George Phippen remarked, "Get to work, you've got talent." This comment was directed to Ben Johnson after Phippen had seen a few wood carvings of his lying around. Unfortunately Ben was too involved with his large Appaloosa breeding program and putting the children through school, to start another project. But the encouragement of Phippen remained in his mind for quite some time... Driving through what seemed to be the Sahara Desert, an oasis appeared about 45 miles east of Colorado Springs. Just outisde of Yoder is the home of Ben Johnson, national director for the ApHC. With a perfect view of Pike's Peak and miles and miles of wide open spaces, it seems to be an ideal place to rest, relax and create bronze sculptures, according to Ben. For three years Ben has been sculpting Western bronze statues. Having dealt with Appaloosa horses for quite some time, you can bet he has some spotted bronzes. Ben was born July 13, 1916 on a homestead 13 miles from Provost, Alberta, Canada. His family moved to Lamar, Colo., in 1918 in order to retain their U.S. citizenship. Ben's father farmed and raised livestock, always close to cattle ranches. In 1928 the Johnsons moved to the Grand Junction area on the Western slope of Colorado. After Ben graduated from high school he traveled around the United States working his way by doing various odd jobs. He washed dishes, waited tables and even picked cotton. In his spare time he would carve plaques from wood. In 1941 Ben married Dorothy Eastman and they settled down to raising cattle, Appaloosa horses and kids no time for carving. Speaking of raising Appaloosas, Ben has been quite successful at his venture. Ben rode and trained Patchy F-416 to National Champion Performance Horse. He rode Patchy in 1950 at the Nationals and took 2nd in the calf roping and 3rd in cow cutting. Ben trained My Ole Still, setting world records at the track; Happiness

Bunch Quitter - phot o by Doug Ford Some of the most tedious work is done by the sculpters hands Is, setting an Appaloosa world record for 1/2 mile at the Colorado State Fair; and Dawndee, also setting an Appaloosa race record. Ben made something out of most of the horses he had anything to do with. He sold many of the horses that he owned and they have also gone on to make a name for themselves. This all couldn't be just luck. According to Ben, "Talent helps, but to be successful it has to be applied by determination, continuous study and hard work." It is pretty obvious if one were to look at his list of winnings with Patchy F-416, Sunshine, (1953 National Grand Champion Mare), Blossom, Patchy Jr., (many times winner at the Nationals), Patchy Jr.'s Shaun Tonga, (National Grand Champion Stallion), Keeko, (National Champion Produce of Dam), My Ole Still (race winner), and Happiness Is (race winner). Ben also pastured brood mares on some of the larger ranches in the Bookcliff and Pinon Mesa area; In return he rode spring and fall roundup and branding. By 1973 his three children, Jerry, Linda and Claire, were married and Ben had curtailed his Appaloosa program. With George Phippen's encouragement still in his mind, he dug out the clay George had given him and decided to see what he could do. He squeezed, rolled, fumed, fussed, and through trial and error finally came up with a small piece that he called "The Challenge." Ben took it to The Phippen Bronze Foundry in Prescott, Ariz., and Ernie Phippen took one look and said, "cast it." It was set for an edition of twelve and all were sold. Since then, he's done quite a few more - mostly with a Western theme. Most of them are at the EI Prado Gallery in Sedona, Ariz. He claims that was a bit easier than bronze statues, but the challenge isn't the same. Ben has made several contributions to the Appaloosa Horse Club and one in particular was organizing the first regional club of which he was president. This was the Mountain and Plains ApHC of Colorado. Ben and his wife spend a lot of time redoing antique furniture and collec ting Western art, which is displayed throughout their home. They are in the process of moving to a new location in Yoder as they are just leasing their present home. "Hopefully I'll have more time for my bronze work when we get settled," Ben said. It's no wonder I had a difficult time reaching Ben, but after my visit to Yoder I discovered why. Ben's a busy man. Ben Working in his Temporary Studio Even Steven 22

Mendal s Law Applies To Horses Too. Accentuate Appaloosa in Your Breeding Program And Improve Your Foal s Chances For Color By Ken Blevin & Palmer Wagner History shows that all domestic animals are, in the main, the result of planned matings. Most of the great bloodlines were plotted before their development, and chance or accident was a minor factor. Successful breeders are those who have developed an eye for congeniality - and that means compatible genes and know-how to use these compatible traits to a given goal. Whatever the desired end product may be, whether for breeding, racing, or extra substance, it is more quickly and certainly achieved if the desirable traits are conserved and concentrated by re-blending known genetic quantities. The alternative to this is the dispersion of what is desirable, since it may easily be outweighed by other factors introduced into the programs that can lower the probability of the desired response. The successful "nicks" we often hear of many times turn out to be responses in a mating of individuals who go back to the same or related reference sires. If pedigrees are studied sufficiently. the outcome is often predictable and is in no sense mysterious. The blending of several bloodlines often does not yield the same potency as the doubling up and concentrating the genes within a bloodline. In the former case, you often get a conglomerate that is actually less dominant because many of the desired traits stand alone in smaller ratios and are thus indi vidually less effective in outweighing factors that could otherwise be kept reces sive. In the case of horses, the pedigrees of many great sires show frequent re-concentration High quality stallions, such as these, can be produced from Appaloosa sire and dam with, the authors say, a better chance of achieving color when mated to Appaloosa mares. and re-blending. It takes a good horse to begin with, to stand such concentration without detriment, but the resulting potency carries on for generations against seemingly great odds and is often worth the gamble. Such a pedigree appears on page 36 of the January 1972 Appaloosa News, and details the genealogy of the Starbuck Leopard. It is to be noted that the horse San Rafael appears on both sides, and The King of the Mountain no less than four times within five generations. This was simply a case where 21 out of the 23 horses listed in the pedigree were high-colored- Appaloosas. There was very little else for this sire to contribute. It is plain to see why he was a potent sire. and there is something to be said for the way he was bred. This is the manner, as the pedigree shows, to fix dominants, but it is often not necessary to use so many generations or the same horse so many times, when others of the same makeup, distantly related, can be used with greater safety. Many people look at an Appaloosa, or his pedigree, and still have no concept of the probabilities involved that brought him into being as he is seen, or of his value as a consistent progenitor of his visible traits. Where some may quite successfully predict what they produce, others doubt the causes of what is seen and even verbally deny the laws of nature they do not understand which acted to produce what stands before 23

them. It is practice of a theory, continued research, and experiment that supply the evidence of what is seen. It only takes cattle one year less to mature than horses, and cattlemen have been very successful in producing potent sires. This is because their registries require complete records, and because they do not register hybrids. There is no reason some horse breeders cannot do the same, especially Appaloosa breeders, since this horse lends itself well to genetic studies. It has only been 100 years since the experiments of Gregor Mendel proved the proportionate expressions of dominant genes in succes sive generations. The concept of mathematical values being applied to traits in animals and even to the science of botany was not immediately grasped, and is too little known even today. The laws of heredity are known and are immutable, and disregarding the odds over a period of time in a volume program is not wise. Thus the unbiased keeping of complete production records would portend what economics may later enforce. The consistency of purebred genetic response is best underscored by the proportionate proliferation of traits over successive generations in deliberate hybri d- ized matings. This was Mendel's method. His results, over 100 years ago, bear out recent findings that there is a universality in the genetic code of all living matter. It is possible to transfer DNA replicating material from a human abdomen into that regenerating rabbit hemoglobin without interfering with the function or distorting the product of the latter, thus showing that the replicating codes are identical in humans and rabbits. These codes are residual in the chromosomes of the cell nuclei of all living matter, and there is little left to guess about when the same truly replicating types are mated with each other, or become adulterated with other known quantities or variations. The first of two simple examples is the blue-eye, brown-eye response in humans. Where a brown-eyed father having sufficient generations of brown eyes in his family to be considered a "purebredbrown" (without recent infusion of blue genes) marries a woman having the same strength of blue in her genes, all their children will be brown-eyed. When these brown-eyed children find mates with a similar inheritance, 75% will be browneyed and 25% blue-eyed with the same genetic strength as the origi nal blue-eyed grandmother. These, when mating with similar blue, will only produce blue. Of the 75% of brown-eyed, 1/3 or 25% of the total of blues and brown will breed true, brown with brown, as do the blues among themselves. The other 2/3 of the browns, or 50% of the total, when mating with browns of the same genetic mix, will produce both brown and blue eyes. Translating thes e codes in the second example to horses, and to Appaloosas in particular, experience tends strongly to confirm that the dominant color gene of a prepotent sire can come through in a variety of matings, including those with mares of other breeds, in strength in the first generation. With two dominant genotype Appaloosa parents with little or no recent infusion of outside blood, you can begin to think of approac hing 100% results of visible Appaloosa characteristics in the offspring. However, the progeny from crosses with other breeds when mated with ani mals of a similar inheritance cannot produce more than 75% color, leaving 25% solid. This latter percentage may be even higher where the color factors are sex linked. Of the 75% showing some color, only 1/3 or 25% of the total will approach the potency of the dominant sire. The rest of the colored, or 50% of the total will, even among themselves, produce a variety or gradation of color ranging from well-marked phenotypes to solids. When these colored animals are again deliberately mated to solids, the color production will fall even lower and eventually disappear if this course is continued. With that 50% that are colored phenotypes, your expectancy of solid offspring is greater than it was in their own generation. Of those animals showing no characteristics in the first and second generations, you can expect no color at all if they are mated with their equals, no matter how long you continue it among them. The above projections are based on not one, ten, or even a hundred matings, but according to The four mares above were produced in a breeding program designed to concentrate the presence of the Appaloosa color gene without sacrificing other desirable qualities. 24

the probabilities of the law of large numbers which the genetic code of the dominants will express. The actual experience with only a few animals is not a true reflection of either expected or actual experience with large numbers which truly reflect the chromosomal genetic mix of the animals being proven. Thus, you do not necessarily have a 50% chance of getting an Appaloosa on each trial with these phenotypes because it is not a simple two-sided "coin flip" situation since there are more than two facets involved here. Most simply stated, everyone seems to understand that if you mate Herefords and Shorthorns, you have a hybrid showing much greater continuing variety in conformation and coloring than either parent. We also seem to understand that if you mate Appaloosas and Pintos, we have produced horses with hybrid character whose progeny in later generations can eclipse or adulterate the color character of both. Because of the manner of registering several different breeds of horses, few seem to comprehend that if you mate Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses, you also have a hybrid, even though they are not so designated, as you do if you mate Appaloosas with other breeds. The fact that strong Appaloosa character may dominate in the first generation does not mean that the latent genes from outside which are not evident to the eye are no longer present, and will not assert themselves again without being changed whenever the first balanced opportunity presents itself. The Arabian Horse Club Registry has followed a policy of awareness of these matters, and the consistency of their breed, without lauding or criticizing it, attests to that fact. In contrast to this, registries which are open allow various infusions of out side blood, on a continuing basis, that translates eventually into an apparent conflict of types. A judge may thus have more problems than an exhibitor whenever these variations appear side by side. The Knabstrupper registry in Europe is an excellent check on expression of what we recognize as the Appaloosa color gene. These horses breed true as to color, the only exceptions being where solid foals appear within a few generations after previously mating with a solidcolored animal. There is, then, a case for selective breeding within the breed. It is possible to upgrade in all respects, color included, by judicious re-concentration and line breeding, and no reason at all why we cannot develop strains that breed true, even selecting for preferred patterns, if we will simply take the time to make those matings, keep the required records, and weed out the phenotypes regardless of their appearance. By the same token, those genotypes who meet color standards but are otherwise weak should also be rejected. The photos which accompany this article are of related mares produced in such programs that have already approached "stallion color response." Even they are not yet an end product breeding abs o- lutely true, but still require genetic weighting for future generations. The stallion photos illustrate a type pos sible to produce from Appaloosa sire and dam, that can be effectively used along with such mares. Where the Appaloosa registry has probably 100,000 living animals, the need to "go out for quality" should by now be diminished to the vanishing point. There are many animals being marketed today as breeding stock, having been produced from potent sires and solid mares with no Appaloosa character. The real measure of such a program is what your customers will be saying about you when they have tried to produce color in equal strength for the next two or three generations. This practice will continue, but the breeder and the buyer should be aware of the probabilities and what it will cost both in the end in producing ID or grade animals in ever increasing numbers. There will always be out crossing to put Appaloosa color on horses of other popular conformations or breeds having more speed for the racing enthusiast, but these are end products for a given purpose and cannot perform outside their specialty as breeding stock with those whose potency and genotypical character has been preserved, along with their improvement. This improvement also includes the retention of a respectable disposition. We can observe what has happened to breeders who set forth their stock with the statement, "These are good mares in spite of the fact that they are Appaloosa;" or the promotion of a marginally colored Appaloosa stallion with the legend that "this horse has never been bred to an Appaloosa mare". This is an excellent time for serious breeders to initiate long term programs to both preserve the identity of the breed while improving it from within, and continue to supply superior breeding to assist those whose major interest is to produce specialty products for specialized uses. While we should not say all the truth has been discovered, we can say some truth has not only been discovered but supported by scientific research and documentation. Whatever our purpose in breeding the horses we like may be, prejudice should be laid aside if it conflicts with natural law that is the governing force in these matters since long before there were horses or horse breeders. Appaloosa News~June,

Q: So, here's a question that was discussed this evening. Why does FAHR HAVE to be tied directly to ApHC. Why couldn't FAHR, once a horse is registered with them and they have the pedigree established, not do their own registration certificates on their get from that point on? And when a new horse is registered w/ pedigree just take it from there without involving ApHC. A: There are several reasons for FAHR s requirement for horses to be eligible for registration they must first and foremost be registered with the ApHC. Article XIII, Registration Rules and Regulations, section C and D reads as follows; C) Applicant horse must be currently registered with the Appaloosa Horse Club, Inc. of USA or with Appaloosa Horse Club of Canada. D) This section and subsection is in force for the duration of the life of the corporation. These two rulings state that for the perpetuity of FAHR all horses for registrations must be also registered with the Appaloosa Horse Club. The original Founders of the Foun- dation Appaloosa Horse Registry when forming the laws of incorporations took this issue into consideration giving it extensive study and thought. One of the realistic aspects for the Founders to consider was the what if factor. FAHR s Founders were a very impassioned and dedicated group, but they also realized that this venture was going to take a lot of hard work and effort to not only get off the ground but to keep growing and progressing. In order to insure that the people who had faith in them and what FAHR stood for they thought it only wise for these people to continue to register their stock with the ApHC to protect against their horses becoming grade in the event that the FAHR was not to remain solvent. The Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry is not now nor never has been anti-aphc. Many of the Founders are long-time members of the Appaloosa Horse Club. The FAHR was not founded on the basis of disregarding the ApHC. One other important reason for this ruling is the very horses we as FAHR members value, run to the Appaloosa Horse Club s stud books. What horse more fitting should be registered with this club than the descendents of the original F# horses? Q: I thought this was The Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry, dedicated to the protection, preservation, perpetuation and promotion of the true bloodlines of the Appaloosa horse? Why so much talk of the ApHC? A: Although the FAHR is an entity on it's own, our rules require that all the horses that are registered with FAHR, first need to be registered with the ApHC. They hold the book! THEE ONLY BOOK! The Foundation Horses we protect, preserve, perpetuate, and promote are in that book. The FAHR is not anti ApHC, so when something is happening that is so blatantly in disregard for the Appaloosa breed horse you can bet you are going to see some discussion from the FAHR camp. FAHR does not discriminate against bloodlines. We have rules against high white, blue eyes, bald, apron or wide blazes and no Hyyp or Herda is allowed. ( editor s note:) These two questions were taken from the FAHR Facebook page. The second question was in regards to a discussion having to do with the registration of a stud colt who is sired by an APHA stallion. 26

He counts as 100% in his generation. 100% Generation two is the Dam and Sire and count for 50% per Appaloosas. 50% 50% Generation three count for 25 %. 25 % 25 % 25 % 25 % Generation four 12 1/2 12 1/2% 12 1/2% 12 1/2% 12 1/2% 12 1/2% 12 1/2% 12 1/2% 12 1/2% The fifth & sixth generation would be the value of 6 1/4% and 3 1/8th% per Appaloosa in these generations. In each column add the total of percentages. Then add the entire five or six generation you determined. In other words if in the fifth generation you had 16 Appaloosas and 16 Non-Appaloosa or un-reg, unknown then your horse would be 50% in that generation. Add the number of generations you calculated and divide into the total of all generations percentages. 35
