3 FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello everyone, Fall is here, the holidays will soon be upon us and 2010 is almost over. December is the month for holidays. It is also time to send in your FAHR Stallion reports. December is also the time of year to renew your 2011 memberships. FAHR memberships run from January 1 to December 31. Please renew your membership for We launched our new website but the web designer is trying to resolve a problem on the Forum. The On Line Shopping is not activated because we are working on getting our account approved. The Horse Registry has most of the horses updated. Currently working on corrections and transfers. If the information is not correct please me and let me know. I also need good jpeg photos of your horses to put in the Horse Registry. The Flickr area has slots for 6 horses these images come from the Registry. When you click on a horse you have the possibility to see 3 different images and also a pedigree. Send jpeg photos to: johnhess@mtco.com The annual membership meeting was Saturday October 16 in Shipshewana, Indiana. I stopped at Rob & Dawns around noon on Friday. Rob and I visited some local businesses and I did some shopping. We stopped at Peter Stone Horses and talked about the costs of having a production run of a Foundation type Appaloosa. I showed them a picture of one of my leopard mares and asked about a custom hand painted one of a kind order. They showed me one they had just finished. Every spot, halo, face and leg markings was hand painted to match the horses picture. The level of detail and craftsmanship was unbelievable. After checking into the host hotel went back to Rob & Dawn s for supper and a get together, socializing around a bonfire. On Saturday morning nine of us had breakfast at the 6 Mile Café. Then back to Shipshewana and pre meeting setup. At the meeting we went over all the agenda items. There was an interest in having a Stallion directory for We discussed horses for the 2012 Mug and it was decided to do Apache F730 if we can find a good color picture if not then we will go with Bear Paw F1376. FAHR is going to place several ads and classifieds in several magazines in We are going to utilize our new website and our presence on Facebook more. We will have more news and events, sell the Featured Horse spots, classifieds, and more affiliate marketing. We spent a lot of time discussing the new website, policies for Foals and Classified sections. To order FAHR Decals, T-shirts, mugs, jackets, belt buckles and calendars that is in the Tidings send your order and payment to FAHR Inc, P.O. Box 1134 Middlebury, IN FAHR is happy to be affiliated with Wearhaus Designs. Wearhaus Designs did all the embroidery and silk screens of our Logos that you see on our T-shirts and jackets. They have They have many different options to offer you with the FAHR Logo on their apparel. Go to the FAHR website and click on the Wearhaus Design image vi ew their apparel and to place an order. They offer woven shirts, T-shirts, caps, outerwear, work wear and more. You have different options to chose with the FAHR Logo like embroidery Logo for caps, Double Appliqué, Reverse Appliqué, and etching. There are five different FAHR logos to choose from. Towards the end of the meeting we had a question and answer period and it was brought up about having more fun along with the business side of FAHR. Like having get togethers to just relax and visit. They could be held at different times and places during the year, maybe weekend trail rides, and suggest more opportunities to socialize besides just at the annual meeting. I know from the experience that sitting around a campfire can make for an awesome and memorable get together. Local area businesses donated items for our silent auction and the total value of the items donated were just under $ Proceeds from the meeting were as follows: Auction items $289, Merchandise $34, Membership $55 and Donations $139. After the meeting most of us went to eat at the Frontier Restaurant then to Rob & Dawns for good old fun around a bonfire. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all. John Hess

4 FROM THE REGISTRAR FROM THE EDITOR Greetings to you all! Another FAHR annual meeting has come and gone. What a great time I had. A few new people and visiting with friends. If you have never attended a meeting you really should try. The town of Shipshewana is beautiful, especially in the fall. This year I actually had time to shop down town and discover shops that I didn t even know about. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our President, John Hess, for his hard work on keeping this organization together. The countless hours he has spent working on our NEW website is remarkable. If you haven t seen it yet, check it out. It is wonderful. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Rob and Dawn Bates for all of the hard work they do in preparation for this event, soliciting local merchants for gifts to add to our silent auction, not to mention opening up their home to all of us to enjoy. They are also happy to show off their beautiful appaloosa s, if fact they have a young stallion right now that is gorgeous, give Rob a call and talk to him about this fine horse, oh yes, did I mention that he is for sale? Saturday evening dinner was a delight, homemade soup and chili, cheese and crackers brought by the Anderson s and Kris s homemade pumpkin fudge, to die for! It was wonderful to see Tom and Linda Taylor again. I had a wonderful visit with Xen and his wife Kris, who by the way makes beautiful embroidered blankets and pillows with native and Appaloosa themes. This year she was working on ear warmers. Xen is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to our horses. If you have never had the pleasure of visiting with him, you should! I hope that you all can mark your calendars for next years meeting and try to make it. You do have a voice and the annual meeting is the place to let it be heard. Must have a minimum of 1GB RAM, 80 GB Hard drive with Windows XP operating system. johnhess@mtco.com 4 As we enter the last remaining months of the year 2010 and enter into the second decade of the millennium I think it only fitting to stop and reflect on the events, changes and accomplishments for the Foundation bred FAHR Appaloosa. We are still very much a small organization and even though we are closing in on the 1000 horse registered FAHR had hoped to be further along in the growth of membership as well as horses registered. The first ten years we ve witnessed the passing of long-time respected breeders, such as Palmer Wagner, Alice Pratt, and Frank Scripter. Also the loss of Foundation Stallions Toby K s Shadow, M&S Butch Cassidy a grandson of Foundation stallion Dutch Eagle, National Champion GA Sundance Image, and the last known son of Chief Chelsea, Dun Roven Chelsea. We have been along for the ride of FAHR #280 Eagles Thunderntoby as he earned his endurance medallion under the training and guidance of FAHR Vice President Bill Wicklund. We watched and cheered him on as he went to the ApHC Championship World show in both 2007 and again in One of the highlights of this decade was watching many FAHR horses compete and place in show. FAHR #402, DREA Storm CL Patchy went to the ApHC Championship World Show as a top reining horse. The FAHR horse has developed from a third and fourth generation to many in the registry being five generation and even a handful of sixes should see the first seventh generations. There have been memberships and horses entered into the registry from Europe in this first decade of the century. Sales of FAHR horses to Puerto Viarta, Mexico, Malaga Spain, and France. A FAHR stallion #907, CTA Kiamichi Red and mare FAHR# 516 RA Wagtails Shyanne were sold as a pair to Sir Paul McCartney s breeding program in England as well. FAHR has developed a Saddle log and Distance program for it s members as well as a Performance program. Although many of us who are involved with the day to day running of FAHR had hoped to be further along it is quite remarkable what FAHR has accomplished in this first ten years.

5 Presidents Report 12 th Annual General Membership Meeting 16 th October, 2010 Good afternoon and welcome to the 2010 Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry, Inc. 12 th Annual membership Meeting. It is hard to believe that another year has passed. These last 4 years that I have been President of FAHR have been both a challenging and rewarding. I want to thank you for the opportunity to serve as your President it is an experience like none other. The challenges we are witnessing are unlike any we have seen before. These challenging economic times are affecting everyone in the equine industry with declining numbers of memberships, registrations, mares bred, and advertising revenue. We can be assured that we have plenty of challenges ahead and that each breed group is having serious conversations about what the future could and should be like. Questions are being asked about programs, services, and activities that may not survive. Worldwide marketing opportunities do exist for our Foundation bred Appaloosa horses. As was proven by the sale of several of our FAHR registered horses to Sir Paul McCartney, East Sussex, England to enhance his breeding program. Last years annual meeting it was decided that a new website would be our #1 goal and priority for I knew the new site was going to have to be built using XHTML and CSS and was a Content Management System. The Horse Registry database was going to have to be built using PHP and MYSQL. I put the word out on several sites on the internet and received hundreds of inquires. Most I discarded. I was also looking at various horse organization websites for ideas and to see who built their websites. I liked the Palomino Breeders of America website design and look and saw it was built by Green Speak Media. I contacted them. We have a new website that looks awesome, has a cool and functional design. I believe this is the premier horse website out there. Other accomplishments are the FAHR Performance Point Program which is designed to reward those who compete with their FAHR Foundation bred Appaloosas in approved or sponsored shows excelling in all breed competitions. FAHR provided brochures, literature, history, posters and pictures of F # horses to youth for school and 4H projects. We provide material and our kit to various Equine Fairs. FAHR also has a new director Deanna Brown. Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry can be found on Facebook. We are also in partnership with Wearhaus Designs and I am working on a partnership with Green Speak Media. The time to provide ideas and recommendations on where we need to go is now. The synergy between this website and our social network presence on Facebook will make possible a whole new world of possibilities. I will always be grateful to the breeders, owners, exhibitors and riders who love the Foundation bred Appaloosa as much as I do. As always I wish you health, happiness, and much success! Thank you

6 Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry, Inc Unofficial Minutes General Membership Meeting October 16, 2010 President, John Hess, called the General Membership Meeting to order at 1:00 p.m. EST A roll call of the board showed those directors present were: Kathy Conklin, John Hess, Vicki Grant and Rob Bates. Absent: Arita Harwood, Bill Wicklund, Craig Wells, Tom Leahy, Eddie Street, and Deanna Brown. Members of the 2010 FAHR Board of Directors are: John Hess, Bill Wicklund, Kathy Conklin, Vicki Grant, Arita Harwood, Eddie Street, Craig Wells, Tom Leahy, Rob Bates and Deanna Brown. The minutes from the 11 th annual meeting October 17, 2009, were read. A motion to approve the minutes as read was made by Xen Anderson, Seconded by Kaye Phelps. The Treasurer s report was read. A motion to accept the Treasurer s report subject to audit was made by Dale Muyskens, Seconded by Steve Karns. President s report was given by John Hess. There was no Vice Presidents report. There were no Committee Reports. The following was read to the membership: If a quorum of the membership is not in attendance, those proposed Bylaw amendments which do not limit the rights of a member, will be decided by the majority vote of the Board of Directors, in accordance with Bylaw, Article XI, Section 2, C. The members in attendance will have the opportunity to discuss these issues prior to the vote of the Board. There was no quorum at this meeting. No old business. No New business: Discussed programs and events which enhance and encourage FAHR ownership, participation, and enjoyment. The Programs FAHR has are Distance, Saddle Log, Performance Point Program, Stallion Barn and Stallion Directory. Ginger Karns voiced a concern about the Performance Point Program burning horses out just for points. Discussed using Facebook effectively to introduce the younger generation to horses and to use Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry s presence on Facebook effectively. Continue to supply 4-H groups and school projects with FAHR brochures and materials and to also include the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. A break was taken and the meeting continued at 3:13. The website and use to its fullest with the news and events. Policies need to be developed for the Foals & Classifieds. Discussed the possibility of selling Featured Horses spots in the Horse Registry. Adding Google adsense and more affiliate marketing. Talked about Tidings goals, guidelines and expectations in place. Distributation date or dates members can expect to see the Tidings. Discussed the FAHR Printer, it s recent problems and that we have had that printer for at least 8 years. Investigate end of year model clearances and sales of commercial printers with the same or better specifications than our pre-

7 sent printer. Decided to use up our extra printer cartridges then sell printer on ebay. Horse Registration Proposal Guidelines for the adoption of or amendments to the rules of registrations was introduced by John Hess. In which a case study would have to be performed and presented to the BOD for consideration showing what the impact this would have on FAHR and horse registrations before proposal would be accepted. Question about Director eligibility requirements Article VII Section 4 A & B was brought up. Member of FAHR in good standing and have been a member for not less than 1 year prior to the election date of May 1 st of the election year. Question a member for not less than 1 year prior to is this time period concurrent or can it be broken up, Example member from 2000 to 2005 quit then asked in October of 2009 if became a member could fill a vacant director slot. Question about Vice President being an officer and not a director could that person assume the duties of the President if that office was vacated? Decided since the President has to be a Director than the Vice President would also have to be a Director. Discussed raising the fee of lost/replacement registrations and decided to leave the current fee ($5.00) as is. 1. John Hess presented a proposal for change to Registration Requirements Article XIII, Section 1 (A) and Section 1 (A)(1)(b)(c) too be as follows: (1) Applicant Horse will have no non-appaloosa ancestors thru the fourth Generation, and must be 75% ( contain only four [4] non-appaloosa ancestors) in the 5 th generation. (1)(b) All horses whose ApHC number contains an F preceding the number is considered to be a purebred Appaloosa. Therefore, for eligibility purposes, the purebred individual is given a numeric weight of being 100% Appaloosa, and its ancestors are then not counted against the number of crosses allowed, regardless of the generation in which it appears. (1)(c) A horse conceived from the mating of a FAHR registered mare and a FAHR registered Stallion may be eligible for registration in FAHR as long as the registration and eligibility requirements are met. The idea of having a Stallion Directory for 2011 was brought up. The general consensus was it was a good idea. Horse for the 2012 mug would be Apache F730 unless we do not have a good photo then the horse will be Bear Paw F1376. Advertisements in 2011 contact ApHC UK and ApHCC see if they will swap advertisements with us in there Quarterly magazine. Also place several ads in the classifieds of several magazines. Priorities and goals for 2011 is to utilize FAHR s social network on Facebook and the website with more news and events. Area businesses that donated items for our auction had a total value of just under $600. Results of the Raffles and Silent Auction were announced and breakdown is as follows: Auction items $289.00, Merchandise $341.00, Membership $55.00, Donations $ Nominations for President and Vice president and confirmation of Financial Secretary/Treasure, Secretary and Editor were made. Ginger Karns made a motion to adjourn the meeting, Xen Anderson seconded. The 12 th annual membership meeting was adjourned October 16, 2010 at 3:50 p.m. EST.

9 Website Referral Program Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry Overview This is a website referral program for Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry and Green Speak Media in order to give the FAHR's member a great opportunity to get a world class website built for a discount while also giving an equitable payback to the FAHR. Website Options Green Speak Media has created a program to get FAHR members a great website. Although this program is designed to be all inclusive to create a website from start to finish it does not include a custom website design. It is simple a popular package. This feedoes not begin until the website launches. $20 Grand Total $1,685 Fee Schedule One half of total project fee is due upon contract acceptance with remainder due upon project completion. Terms and Conditions Once project fee is paid in full to Green Speak Media any elements of text, graphics, photos, contents, trademarks, or other artwork furnished to Client for inclusion in website are owned by Client. Green Speak Media assumes Client has permission from the rightful owner to use any images or design elements that are provided by Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry for inclusion in the website, and will hold harmless, protect, and defend Green Speak Media from any claim or suit arising from the use of such elements. Green Speak Media retains the right to display graphics and other Web content elements as examples of their work in their portfolio and as content features in other projects. Green Speak Media also retains the right to place a text link on the bottom of every page. This agreement becomes effective only when signed by agents of Client and Green Speak Media. Regardless of the place of signing of this agreement, Client agrees that for purposes of venue, this contract was entered into in Oklahoma and any dispute will be litigated or arbitrated in Oklahoma. The agreement contained in this contract constitutes the sole agreement between Client and the Green Speak Media regarding all items included in this agreement. 11 FAHR ANNUAL MEETING 2010 It was a glorious fall weekend in northern Indiana, and a perfect setting for the 2010 annual FAHR meeting! Besides the meeting itself, which was both informative and interesting, there were plenty of other opportunities to socialize with other FAHR members. Friday night, those of us who had come to Shipshewana a day early, went to the home of Rob and Dawn Bates for dinner and some good conversation around a bonfire. President John Hess talked about the new FAHR website, and the things we would be able to do with it, once it is complete. We all House for dinner after the meeting, and enjoyed an excellent meat. What I will always remember, though, is the long line of Amish buggies parked at the hitch rail! There were at least 15 of them. It just seemed so unreal, like being on another planet! Rob and Dawn invited everyone over for another bonfire, but I was tired and opted to go back to the hotel. I'm sure more good conversations were had around the fire that night! Before heading for home on Sunday, I again visited Rob and Dawn. Many thanks to them for their hos- Saturday morning, many of us gathered at a local restaurant for breakfast. Tom and Linda Taylor joined us, and it was a delight to have them present for the day! After breakfast, we had some free time before heading to the convention center at noon, where we got to see all the great things that were donated for the silent auction. The new FAHR mugs and calendars also were available for purchase. The FAHR meeting began promptly at one o'clock. A good many topics were discussed. Director/Registrar, Kathy Conklin thanked him for the huge effort he put forth to get this up and running. I am certain it will educate people and will attract new members. The main details of the meeting will appear in the minutes, but I'd like to say here that several members had very good ideas for promoting our breed, and I came away from the session with a lot to think about. ~ We headed to the Frontier Steak Beautiful hand-crafted blanket made and donated by Kris Anderson. pitality and for the hard work they put forth in getting ready for this meeting! 13 Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry PERFORMANCE POINT PROGRAM Do you enjoy promoting your Foundation bred Appaloosa in open competition or ApHC or ApHCC approved/sanctioned shows and all-breed events including competitions hosted by national organizations? Do you compete in local open shows hosted by local clubs, saddle clubs, other breed organizations? If so the Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry would like to present to you and the FAHR registered horse you compete with the opportunity to receive recognition and awards for excelling in competitions against Appaloosas and all horse breeds. The FAHR- Performance Point Program will accept most types of activities as long as the competition is sponsored by an organization or club that keeps official records for at least one year on the performance of all horses entered in the event and have a show manager at the event who will sign a verification form presented by the exhibitor/competitor. Eligibility - All applicant horses must be registered with the Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry. Owner(s) must be a current active FAHR member in good standing. Fees and Entry - An enrollment form must be completed annually for each horse competing in this program. The annual enrollment fee is $15.00 per horse. Point year runs from January 1st thru December 31. Awards and Recognition - Any open, ApHC or ApHCC approved/sanctioned show or all-breed events hosted by a national organization is eligible to earn recognition and awards based on the number of points they accumulated during the point year. Approved Categories - Category 2 (Games) limited to one-person events, team events are not included. If the owner competes in an event not included in one of these categories, you may request that your event be added by writing to the Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry. If your request is approved the event will not be added until the following year. Category 1: pleasure, equitation (English & Western), hunter, trail, reining, jumping, driving & buckboard Category 2: barrels, pole bending, stumps, stakes race, flag picking, ring race, keyhole and mounted cowboy shooting. Team events not included. Category 3: Roping, cutting, steer daubing, team penning, sorting etc. How to report your success - Complete and have signed your Exhibitor s Report Form, Attach copy of show bill and return the report form to the Foundation Appaloosa Horse Registry within 30 days of the event. The FAHR Horse in each category with the most points will be named the High Point Versatility. The FAHR Horse who has accumulated the most number of points overall will be named the Performance Supreme Champion. 22 By Bill Wicklund On the morning of August 30 th, 2010, I got up about 6 AM. I fed the dogs, let the chickens out, fed the cats. I fed the goats. Finally, I fed the horses. The truck and trailer were packed. I had gassed up the truck the night before. After I finished the chores, I had breakfast, bacon, eggs, and toast. I checked my s. Thunder s leg wraps weren t rolled yet. I hadn t packed and loaded the people food. Eagle s ThunderNToby s, feed, hay, and water were all packed Thursday evening. But, my stomach felt queasy and unsettled, so I went into the bedroom to lie down, rest and get well. This was at 8 o clock. At 10:00, I felt better, got up and rolled Thunder s wraps, filled my 2 coolers and loaded them. With the leg wraps ready, I filled 3 hay bags and tied them in the trailer, with one up front so Thunder would have something to keep him busy on the trip. Then I went out to his lot and got Thunder. As I was wrapping his legs the flies were bothering him. I sprayed him with fly spray and he hopped in when I asked him. We left for Stillwater, OK and the Hotter Than Hell Endurance Ride a little after 11. After an uneventful trip, we rolled into Lake Carl Blackwell Park shortly after 3:15 PM. I drove into a nice shady spot and unloaded Thunder. I put out his water bucket, a hay bag, fed him his beet pulp, oats and electrolytes and tied him to the trailer. I unwrapped his legs while he was eating, and unhooked the truck. With Thunder taken care of, I went to check in. I checked us in with the number 1, The ride manager, Gail Kimory, a 30 year friend, assured me that her main goal was to see that I finished the ride. Thunder s initial Vet Check at the before the ride. The initial vet check began about 5 PM. Dr. Becky, one of the top veterinarians in Oklahoma was the ride vet. She is VERY GOOD. Nothing gets past Dr. Becky. Thunder checked in with all A s on his card, as usual. I took him back to the trailer and hung him there with 2 hay bags, one on each side and fixed me a ham and swiss sandwich. I drank water and Gatorade, fueling up for the ride the next day. Ride meeting was held about 8 PM. Gail went over the trail minutely for the riders, told us Dr. Becky s metabolic parameters, 64 beats per minute for heart rate, and 56 per minute for respiration. In Endurance riding, respiration is routinely ignored, but Dr. Becky felt that the extreme heat and high humidity expected required tighter controls. We were to ride the same loop 3 times for a total of 50 miles. After the first loop, you have to check in with the timer, then the horse has 30 minutes to recover to the vet s criterion, in this case, 64 and 56. Once the horse reaches criterion, the mandatory hold begins, 45 minutes after the first loop and one hour after the second loop. As soon as your horse comes to criterion, he must pass the vet check, including mucus membranes, capillary refill, jugular refill, skin tenting, gut sounds, anal tone, muscle tone, back and withers, tack galls, wounds, gait, impulsion, attitude, and overall vet impression. And after each vet check the horse has to be fit to continue. Gail told us we would start at 4 AM to avoid as much of the really oppressive heat as possible. She had marked the entire trail with white paper pie plates and we had a full moon to start. I left the meeting and fed Thunder again, beet pulp, oats, and electrolytes, which he would get after each loop, with alfalfa cubes added the day of the ride. I braided his yellow ribbon into his tail, required because he is an 11 year old stallion. All stallions need yellow ribbon in their tail, as well as one on their halter. I set up my cot and pillow, alarm clock set for 3, took a spit bath with cool water, and went to sleep, after making sure I had 8 or 9 water bottles on ice in my 2 coolers. Bed about 10. The night was short. Three o clock came all too early. First things first, hop up and feed Thunder, adding his Diamond M electrolytes to his feed. I set up my fluids, one bottle with ½ Gator-

23 ade, ½ water, one bottle of water to put on Thunder as we move, to keep him cool. Also, one water bottle in my fanny pack and a flashlight to use till it got light, also, 5 packets of GU Energy, human electrolyte, in the fanny pack for me. As I readied us for the ride, I sat my sponge, tied to a 6- foot leather shoestring, on the pickup bed rail with my fanny pack and the 2 water bottles. I brushed Thunder and saddled him in the moonlight. His bright pink #1 showed up very well on his white blanket. I put on his splint boots. Then finished dressing myself, fanny pack, tie the sponge to my belt, duck into my water bottle, then Thunder s and last my persuader, a one foot long strip of leather, used to remind Thunder that I have it, and to kill horse flies that make the fatal mistake of landing on him where I can see them. On goes my helmet. Last, I drink a bottle of 5 hour energy, and suck out one packet of GU Energy, with half of a water bottle, not one I am wearing. Time to start the ball rolling, about 10 to 4. I bridle Thunder, unhook his lead, check the cinch, and lead him up beside my chair, from which I can step into the stirrup. We have 10 minutes to check in our number with the timer, and warm up Thunder. Thunder is an old hand at this and knows what is coming. We walk and trot around till the timer announces the trail is open. We watch the hot shoes leave, then the main body, and then Thunder and I leave. As usual, when we are about a quarter of a mile down the trail, 2 ladies on gray Arabs pass us on the left. Another quarter mile along, and the trail takes a u-turn and comes around to the right. For the next 4 miles the trail skirts several large meadows, making a large semicircle to the left. Thunder is feeling good, and we follow Susan and friend with about an eighth of a mile spacing. This first 4 miles Thunder pops up into a canter from time to time and we rock along. At the 4 mile mark, there is a good watering place on the lake. I take advantage of it, using my sponge to cool Thunder. I have been using my flashlight quite often to be sure we stay on the trail. The white pie plates make it easy. We are off at a trot again. As we leave the lake water hole, we come up over a small hill and over a ridge down to the common trail, making a loop to the right, then back to common trail and on to the right, following a trail into a set of tanks. This is the Las Vegas intersection, complete with a sign and arrow saying that Las Vegas is 2000 miles West. It is still dark here, but time for another GU Energy, which I take with some of my water. Here we start south on a trail that parallels a gravel road on our right. A couple of more miles or 3 and we come to the new wooden bridge, about 10 feet wide by 8 feet long. Just before the bridge, is a straight stretch, through the trees and a little downhill. We trot on the level and walk downhill till we get to the bridge. Thunder walks right across. Then less than a quarter mile further, we come to a creek crossing with about 8-12 inches of cool water. I sponge Thunder, but he is not thirsty yet, just taking a couple of sips. We trot on. The trail has turned east at the wooden bridge and we are paralleling Highway 51 for the next couple of miles. About halfway through this section we come to the dirt bridge we have been told about at the briefing. Thunder jogs right over it, no problem. As we wind through the trees in this more convoluted part of the trail, it is still dark and we walk much of this section. As we reach the turn to the North, now parallel to the road into the park, I know that there are water tanks a short distance along this trail. We have passed the halfway mark on the loop. Thunder is not thirsty at the tanks, and we walk on downhill here. As we loop around to the left and head back to the creek crossing, Thunder picks up the trot on his own. It is starting to get light. When we reach the creek crossing again, Thunder is not thirsty yet but hesitates while I sponge him from the saddle. Then we are off again, across the wooden bridge and about 3 and ½ miles from camp. We soon pass the 2 miles to camp sign. And trot on. When we reach the end of the trail, we cross the blacktop carefully and walk on into camp. I ride up to the timer, announce number one is in, and dismount to cool Thunder. Instantly there are 2 or 3 people helping me sponge. Bruce Burton is there, (his wife and daughter are riding), Gail is there, asking how I feel. I feel pretty good, it s 6:34, and we have maintained 6 mph for the first loop. I am psyched! Thunder is down to criterion in less than 5 minutes. We head for Bill and Thunder heading in after first loop. our vet check, still last on the trail. As we enter Dr. Becky s area, I call for young legs, for someone younger than my 67 years, to trot out Thunder for the vet. While Dr. Becky is checking Thunder, Gail, (both nurse and attorney), is asking what I need. The thing I need most is a crew. Approaching the 15 or 20 vet students from Oklahoma State University, here top learn, Gail asks who has extensive knowledge of horses and would not be afraid of working with a stallion. Eight or ten hands went up. Gail pointed to 3 of them

24 and said, You 3 are this man s crew. You will do whatever he needs done when he is here in camp. Looking at me, she uttered, now you have a crew, and proceeded to pull me to her camper to push a couple of bananas on me and some trail mix. Thunder passed his vet check with all A s, as usual, and I led my new crew to the trailer. As I rested, my crew fed Thunder, filled his water bucket, made me a sandwich, refilled my fanny pack, refilled my Gatorade bottle and Thunder s water bottle. The major and largest benefit of having a crew is that the rider can rest and refuel while someone takes care of his horse. I make sure to replenish my GU Energy packets and eat my sandwich and Gail s banana. Checking the time, seeing that Thunder has his splint boots back on, I tighten the cinch, put on his bridle, climb on my chair, step into the stirrup, and we leave camp on the second loop at Starting out on the second loop. 7:24. I was rested. I felt good. Thunder felt good. We settled into his working trot and my cowboy 2- point position and rolled into the water stop at 4 miles out. Thunder was thirsty, but was leery of the waves coming in off the lake. He did drink, though not as much as I would have liked. I cooled him pretty good with the sponge and we boogied on. When we came to the tanks at the Las Vegas crossroads, 3 men were there putting covers on the tanks to keep the water cooler for the horses. Nice guys, one of them refilled Thunder s water bottle for me, so that I didn t have to dismount and remount. I continued sucking down my GU Energy each hour and kept pouring more water and Gatorade down my throat. I was also keeping Thunder as wet as I could. When we reached the creek we were still on schedule for 6 mph. Here we saw John Nowell, the ride photographer. John really likes Thunder. He took our picture and provided good conversation for the couple of minutes we took to sponge and cool the both of us. Now that it was light, we could move faster through the more technical trail on this section. As we came up to the entrance road to the park, I saw a car drive up and stop at these tanks. It was John again, stopping to turn back the covers on these tanks, so Thunder could drink, and John take his picture again. Then he stayed and covered the tanks to save me from another dismount. What a GREAT GUY! We headed back North to loop around to the left and return to the creek. Thunder kept up a good pace, not needing much direction from me. When he stopped, it was for a potty break or to have me kill some of the dozen or so horse flies harassing him. When we got to Blue Creek again, we soaked up the cool water. I was so glad to see Thunder thirsty. He drank and drank and I sponged and sponged. At this second creek crossing I knew we had around 4 miles to go to camp. As soon as Thunder was ready, he started up the bank and we were back into his working trot. We soon passed the 2 miles to camp sign and continued on into camp. As we walked the last quarter mile to the timer, I saw my crew coming to meet us. We arrived at 9:49, still on schedule for 6 mph. Thunder was kind of wondering where all the people came from. With Bruce Burton and 3 college girls cooling him, he was down to criterion at 9:54, his usual short recovery. I went with the crew to the vet check. Thunder was good, all A s. Now back to the trailer for rest and refreshment. This second hold was an hour. It is starting Heading for the Vet Check. to get hotter. I need to get Thunder cared for, eat a sandwich, a banana, refill all my bottles, and my fanny pack. WOW! This is all so much easier with a crew. These girls are good. I get an hour s rest while Thunder gets fed and brushed again. While he is not used to all these people roaming around, cooling and brushing, he takes it all in stride. We leave for the third loop about 5 till 11. While Thunder is still willing, I am beginning to tire. I still keep up with the GU Energy packets and drink lots of water and Gatorade. Thunder drinks more at the lake water stop while I sponge. When we come to the Las Vegas tanks, we meet a couple of pleasure riders on quarter horses. Thunder drinks good and we zip on South. As hot as it is, we are both very grateful to reach Blue Creek. Thunder sighs as I sponge and he drinks. I soak him and them soak me. The heat is clamping down harder. Coming out of the creek, I meet Susan Young, who is about an hour ahead of me. I ask her to tell the crew in camp that I have slowed a bit, but still plan to finish. She assures me that she will. Thunder and I travel on. On this technical part of the trail, Thunder walks more, but picks up his working trot on the straight stretches. As we make this big loop and come back to Blue Creek, we run out of water. My 2 water bottles in the fanny pack and my Gatorade bottle are empty. Thunder s bottle is empty. We stop in the creek to cool. I sponge Thunder copiously and then soak me pretty good. We are

25 now on the last few miles of the last loop. We continue to zip along, but I can tell Thunder is tiring, his black coat is a solar collector. When we get to the last mile, I let Thunder pick the pace for that last mile. He wants to walk, so we walk. When we pass the finish line, a quarter mile from camp, I check my watch, 1:55. This might be a personal best for us. We continue walking on into camp. No one was at the finish line, so I inform them of my finishing time. Janine is still there. All the other vet students have left, but Janine was on each of my crews at the end of each loop and has stayed to crew for me once more. Dedicated crew member, Janine, trots Thunder out on the last leg of the ride. I dismount and sit down. Gail s husband, Rob, is right there with ice water and cold Gatorade for me. Two or three people are cooling Thunder while I recover. Thunder meets criterion at 2:09. Janine and I take him to the final vet check. She has bonded well enough with him that he trots out pretty good for her. Gail comes over to ask how I am. I m good. I feel pretty good. Thunder is sound and has just finished a 50 miler in good time with his ears up and feeling good. Janine stays and leads Thunder to the trailer and cares for him. She even unsaddles him while I sit, relax, and recover. Thunder gets more feed, his water bucket filled. Janine even carries my chair up to the pavilion for the Thunder getting his last Vet check upon completion of the ride. awards ceremony. Rob hands me another cold bottle of water. Of 16 starters in this very hot endurance ride, 12 have fi n- ished. Thunder and I win the turtle award for being last on the trail. Having a crew was what kept us going. Thunder and I benefited because I could rest and refuel at the mandatory stops while someone else cared for my horse. Having a crew made all the difference. Thunder and I finished this endurance ride in terribly oppressive heat, thanks to my crew. Thanks to Gail, Rob, and all my friends that gathered round and encouraged us after each loop. About 4 I started to pack up, wrapped Thunder s legs, and loaded up to drive home. After a hot but uneventful trip home, we arrived about 9:15 or so, just after dark. I unwrapped Thunder s legs, turned him out into his lot with another feed of beet pulp and oats and his feeder full of hay. When I went into the house, all I wanted was a shower, a sandwich, and a bed. My day had started at 3 AM and the weekend at 6 the morning before. Now I could relax and get well from that upset stomach of Friday morning. Thunder and I had gone to Stillwater and conquered the trail, conquered the heat, and with a LOT of help from our friends come home winners, To Finish Is To Win. 26 Q: I recently bought a mare who has five generations of Appaloosa to Appaloosa breeding. She is not eligible for FAHR because she has a blue chip in one eye. I was told by the registrar that she was not eligible even though both sire and dam are registered and one full sibling is registered but that as long as her foals showed no blue eye they would be eligible The reason being given was that a blue chip/eye is indicative of paint breeding. If that is the case then why does her sibling and pare nts get to keep their papers if paint breeding is suspected? A: Your mare more than qualified by Pedigree for the FAHR, however the FAHR also has guidelines of acceptable characteristics. Although blue eyes/blue chip can be a paint characteristic it is not the only genetic marker for this anomaly. Blue eyes are often a trait of splash, which can cause big white blazes that often appear wider in the middle of the face, can cause white faces and sometimes appear to slide off the side of the face on one side. Splash can cause degrees of blueness in the eye (a partially blue eye, or flecks of blue in an otherwise brown eye) just as it causes different degrees of white markings. Splash white has many levels of expression, can be as maximum as a bald face, white legs and white tail, or as minimal as a blue chip in the eye. Equine geneticist and coat -color specialist D. Phillip Sponenberg, DVM, PhD, a professor of pathology and genetics at the Virginia- Maryland Regional School of Veterinary Medicine in Blacksburg, Va., sums up what little is understood about blue eye inheritance in horses this way: "You expect to see them on cremellos and perlinos. Sometimes they occur with white spotting (coat color), and sometimes they occur on darkcolored horses." Blue eyes are created by pigmentation, or more correctly, lack of pigmentation. The color reflected from the iris, or plural irides, comes from pigmentation, specifically the patterning of melanin. Pigment, by definition, is a material that reflects certain wavelengths of light and thereby shows color. Melanin is a brown or dark pigment that creates color in skin and eyes. "If the pigment is only on the back of the eye, then the light scatters and the eye is blue rather than dark," Sponenberg explains. The more melanin in the front of the eye, the darker the eye appears. More specifically, blue eyes are seen in horses with distinct overo patterning or combinations of the different overo markings. "The splashes, frames, and sometimes even sabinos will have blue eyes," Sponenberg says. "The white is usually on the lower part of the body," says Sponenberg. The blaze is often bottom-heavy, starting wide and circling around the muzzle and lips and narrowing toward the forehead. Or the splash blaze can cover the face and eyes, resulting in what's described as a bald or apron face with blue eyes. the frame and splash genes that cause blue eyes are also known for causing white body markings at their higher expressions that make a horse eligible (depending on bloodlines of course) for full registry with the Paint and/or Pinto registries. But splash and frame can and do exist in primarily 'solid' breeds as well-- mostly at minimal expressions of face and leg white, sometimes a blue eye or nothing that would be enough to call that horse as a pinto/ paint. Occasionally when these apparent 'horses' are bred, a fully pinto marked offspring will result (especially possible if both parents show clues of having minimally expressed splash and/or frame). This doesn't mean that the horse has Pinto or Paint ancestry--as in, ancestry that has full body spotting, or that

27 is registered with either Pinto or Paint registries It just means that the genes to make those potential markings existed in their ancestry and happened to combine with each other/ just the right modifiers/etc. to have white patterning that is more highly expressed in that particular individual than it was in the parents and possibly any other known ancestor prior FAHR FOAL SHOWCASE **************************************** Q: The FAHR rule Article XIII, Section 2, clause F states no pony allowed. Why then does FAHR allow POA s to be included in the registry? A: When the FAHR was first incepted there was an exclusion rule to all ponies in the registry guidelines that included the POA, that is correct. Around the rule was modified to include some POA registered horses to be registered also with the FAHR. The original POA was under 14 hands tall. When the guidelines for the ApHC changed to include horses as small as 14 hands and the guidelines for the POA changed to include horses as large as 14 hands it opened a door for owners and breeders to dual register their horses. So although FAHR does include some dual registered POA s into the registry they must first and foremost hold legitimate papers with the ApHC. Although we have many FAHR horses that reach in height from 15 to 16+ hands there are just as many that are 14 to 14 2 hands. This lends to the possibility that some FAHR horses may also be registered with the POA association, which is the owner/breeders perogative. To Washington, D.C. By Freeman Green On a day in late summer of 1946 while I was at a little country store at Lake Kegona, near Stoughton, Wisconsin, I was amazed to see three cowboys with their horses and pack horses, led by an Appaloosa mare, coming down busy U. S. highway 51. The inscription on the saddle read "Tacoma, Washington, to Washington, D. C." I made their acquaintance and the owner of the Appaloosa mare, Ned Kennedy of Tacoma, said a friend of his bet him $500 that his horse coul d- n't make the trip cross country from Tacoma to D. C., and he was out to' prove it. Accompanied by two friends and their horses, they started out in the spring of 1946 on their long journey. While going through the mountains one of the packhorses was frightened by a bear, and fell down the mountainside and was killed. Mr. Kennedy bought a mule to replace it. When they arrived in Stoughton, Wis., they turned off the highway on to a road along the river, where they spent several days giving their horses and themselves a much needed rest.

29 FORMER NATIONAL CHAMPION DIES TRAIL S END White House, Washington, D.C. February 11th, 1947 Enroute, they stopped at schools along the way and gave talks to the children, telling them about their experiences. Two of Mr. Kennedy's men left him in Chicago, where 'One of them was married. Cecil Cary of Tacoma joined Mr. Kennedy then, and the two of them made the trip to Washington, D. C., as you can see by the enclosed pictures, arriving an Feb. 11, They had quite a time getting through the gates at the White House, but the picture shows them being greeted by President Truman 'On the White House steps. So an Appaloosa mare made an historic trip in fine style. After their meeting with President Truman, Mr. Kennedy and Mr. Cary went to a hotel seeking accommodations for a few days, but were turned down because of their cowboy attire. So they went to another hotel and when the management heard about their trip they were given a royal welcome, and were guests at many functions and made several radio appearances during their stay in Was hington. This was at a time when cars were hard to get so they went on the radio, appealing for a car and trailer so they could make the trip home. Their appeal was answered, and they purchased a station wagon and trailer, and the Appaloosa mare and her companion horse rode home in style. They spent a night at our house on their return trip home, and we enjoyed hearing about their many experiences on their trip. By Ysabel Fetterman Mister Blue, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gerhardt, Riverside, Calif., and former Co-World Champion Appaloosa Performance Horse (1963), died Sept. 22, 1972, of a ruptured stomach. Mister Blue was the son of American Eagle and Little Dutchess. In his youth he won many halter classes and he and his sister May Day Jay and full brot h- ers Dutch Eagle, Blue Admiral and Blue Chip won many get of sire and produce of dam classes on "home ground" as well as at national shows. With Phil Wright in the saddle, Blue became a performance horse to beat. In 1962, at the 15th National Appaloosa Show in Springfield, Ill., he won the hackamore class. At the 16th National in Boise, Idaho, he was first in English pleasure and second in Western pleasure. That same year he became Co-World Champion Appaloosa Performance Horse, hol d- ing the title jointly with Tok -A-Run. Blue took first in trail and first in Western pleasure. At the time of his death he was retired, taking an occasional trail ride and standing at the Riverside, Calif., Gerhardt home. He was truly a credit to the breed and to the Red Eagle foundation stock from whence he came. National Champion Mr. Blue

30 Hin-ma-toe Ya-lu-kiht, aka Chief Joseph By Dr. Francis Haines, Club Historian On October 5, 1877, Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce was surrounded with the remnants of his people in the open prairie about six miles north of the Bear Paw Mountains. Knowing his position to be hopeless, he called his people together in a final council during a short truce period. He gave his speech in his own language to his own people. At the council was Captain John, a Nez Perce interpreter for General O. O. Howard, who then went back to the army officers and delivered his version of the speech, translated into English. This is the only version of the surrender speech now in print, which can be considered authentic. By this time the snow had stopped falling, the sun had come out, and the wet snow was melting rapidly. The following is quoted from an eye witness. "Then old Captain John brought this reply (and his lips quivered and his eyes filled with tears as he delivered the words of his chief): "'Tell General Howard I know his heart. What he told me before I have in my heart. I am tired of fighting. Our chiefs are killed. Looking Glass is dead. Toohoolhoolzote is dead. The old men are all dead. It is the young men who say yes and no. He who led on the young men is dead. It is cold and we have no blankets. The little 30 children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills and have no blankets, no food; no one knows where they are - perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children and see how many I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me, my chiefs. I am tired. My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever." No person has any right to say he is quoting this speech, and then give his own revised version of it. Surely we should allow the words of this fine Nez Perce leader to stand as he gave them that tragic day so long ago. Appaloosa New s~july, 1962

31 NEWS BEAT ApHC National Champion Halter Weanling Is Sired By An APHA Stallion. In June of 2010 during the ApHC Nationals it was discovered by many members of the Appaloosa Community that the ApHC registered colt You Can t Be Serious was the offspring of a registered APHA stallion. First thing that comes to mind is how did this weanling happen to be accepted for registration in the ApHC when rule 205.B reads; No horse shall be registered with the ApHC that has draft, pony, pinto or paint breeding. According to the information available it seems the foal was the result of incorrectly shipped semen. It was discovered after the foal was born that the parentage was questionable due to the foals coloring (Palomino) and a DNA was ordered with the subsequent corrected stallion report being filed with the APHA/AQHA registered stallion Seriously Secure" listed as sire. Now whether or not the breeder was unaware of the fact that an APHA stallion was not an approved cross by Appaloosa rules, the information regarding his APHA dual registration was not stated at the time of the filing for the stallion report nor was this information forthcoming during registration of this colt. The reason being cited was that the current ApHC stallion report and registration forms do not ask if the horse is dual registered. The fact of the matter is although this stallion is in fact registered with the AQHA which is an approved cross, his initial registration was with the APHA and the dual registration came into play two years later after the AQHA revised the mis-placed white ruling. Upon contacting my ApHC Director I was informed that there are several of the BOD who are concerned about this colt s registration and that they are working on this issue at this time and it is on the agenda for the March 2011 meeting. You Can t Be Serious was shown in the Nationals where he became an ApHC weanling Champion. He was shown at the ApHC World show also, this after he was discovered to be sired by an APHA stallion. With this in mind it is a very real possibility that the ApHC will allow this colt to hold his papers as is with full breeding and showing rights as any legally and correctly registered Appaloosa. If you find this to be outrageous please contact every member of the ApHC BOD and voice your concerns. To allow this horse to remain in the registry is an insult to all Appaloosa breeders past and present who have abided by the rules set in place.

33 FAHR SADDLE LOG PROGRAM The Saddle Log Program is a great way for you to earn awards for any time you spend in the saddle on an Appaloosa. We have a program for adults and a program for youth. This program recognizes the need for personal achievement for the individual who daily or weekly enjoys the benefits gained from riding. Whether you ride out on the trail, train and compete in shows, ride in parades, perform ranch work, or whatever your pleasure, those hours will count towards earning great awards. Qualifications for the Saddle Log Program: 1. Credit for saddle log hours will not be given nor will records of hours completed be kept on any eligible person until he or she is enrolled in the saddle log program. To enroll, a program application must be completed and returned to FAHR along with the annual filing fee of $15 for adults and a one time filing fee of $20 for youth. Your FAHR membership fees must also be paid for each qualifying year. 2. For adults, saddle log eligibility is for one year, with each riding season starting on December 1 st (preceding year) and running through November 30 th of that ride year. For youth, eligibility begins with the riding year in which FAHR receives your application and runs until you are over the age of 18 as of December 1 st of the up coming ride season. 3. All Appaloosas used must be registered with FAHR. Horses used need not be owned by the rider logging the hours. 4. Logged hours must be recorded on official forms provided by and available from FAHR. 5. Inactive records will only be kept for maximum of five years. After such time records will be deactivated. One of the reasonings behind the thought that the leopard pattern came in at a later date is the fact the western artist Charles M Russell never depicted a leopard Appaloosa in his paintings. These pictures were taken during the years that C.M. Russell was painting. Clearly the leopard pattern Appaloosa existed during that time period. What are your thoughts on this?
