Spring Trail Ride Coming Soon Spring Trail ride will be held on May 18 th at Salamonie on the less known primitive Dam side. This area has a few more ups and downs on the hills, is more scenic, and not just a one way trail. Lunch will be carry your own on the ride. Directions and more information on Page 12. Attention, Southern Indiana! We are looking for someone in our southern area to host a club event so we can start to spread them around the state! Events can include anything from a trail ride, open barn or even just a backyard BBQ! However you get Morgan people together it s always a good time! Contact Kim Dollard at boldayr4@sbcglobal.net if you are interested in being our next host! Good Homes Wanted We sadly reported in the last newsletter that Charles Troyer, one of our club members, passed away in December. His family is still trying to place the last two of his horses. The first, Casey is a 3 year old stallion who is said to be sweet and easy to handle. He is probably near pony size. The second is a mare who is approximately 14.2, 10 years old, and has been ridden some. If you are interested in more information, please contact Loretta Schafer. Like Us on Facebook! Visit the Indiana Morgan Horse Club Facebook page and Like us and encourage your friends to as well! We will be actively posting club event updates, equine interest pieces and horse photos. Our goal is to keep everyone in the loop and excited about what our club is doing as well as draw new members and Morgan enthusiasts! On the Cover: Winter at Mistylane Morgans! Thanks to Linda Laud for sharing this lovely scene. Volunteers Needed at HHF This year, the IMHC will not have a booth in the commercial section of the show. We will instead be distributing literature and spreading our love of Morgans from our stall display in the Breed Demonstration barn. The club will still need help with setup and tear down as well as manning the area throughout the weekend and particularly while our breed demonstration horses are performing. Contact Bill Jacobsen at or jcbsnwll@aol.com to volunteer! More HHF information on Page 5.

4 The IMHC Spring meeting was held on Saturday, March 2, We started the day at Conley and Koontz Equine Hospital, Inc. The practice founded by Dr. Ron Conley and Dr. Rob Koontz is a premier medical facility for the treatment of horses in Northeast Indiana along with the talents of Dr. Ryan Rothenbuhler. Their hospital provides surgical, diagnostic, and treatment options formerly unavailable in Fort Wayne and surrounding areas. Dr. Ryan provided a tour of the clinic and answered questions along the way. He showed us their stall ward, discussed the sterilization and isolation procedure, and introduced us to some of the current equine residents. He explained how a horse undergoing surgery would travel from the padded ready room into surgery and back into the padded recovery room with the assistance of a large ceiling mounted track/lift. He didn t think any of us wanted to demonstrate the equipment like he usually does with kids on a tour :) Last, we checked out the new technology in xrays and ultrasound equipment with some images from recent cases. Dr Ryan finished up the day by sharing several interesting cases complete with real-life props. Who knew an enterolith could get so large and so heavy? If you missed out, you can follow them on Facebook to see lots of interesting cases! INDIANA MORGAN HORSE CLUB NEWSLETTER INDIANA MORGAN HORSE CLUB PAGE 3 SPRING MEETING After thanking them for the tour, the group headed to Crossroads for lunch. Vicki and Travis played videos of Dutch Harness horses, a promotional video of Cindy Weist s Saddlebred stallion Pentagon, and a slideshow of 50 years of Gold Cup. The Gold Cup video sparked lots of reminiscing! Bundled up for the barn, we then headed to JVT Stables. Vicki arranged demonstrations by two of her Morgans riding and long lining, a jumping demonstration (Quarter Horse), a huntseat demonstration (Arabian) and in hand/liberty meet and greet with the kind and beautiful Pentagon. Vicki s son, Travis of Higgins Stables in Michigan answered questions throughout the day on training and general horse topics. Thank you to everyone who attended, to Dr. Rothenbuhler for the tour, Vicki and Travis for hosting this fun event!

West of Indianapolis! This fantastic facility contains over 500 stalls, Warm Up Ring, Show Ring, and all vendors in one all-enclosed building! Visit for more information. Excerpt From Publisher s Description: A hundred years ago, the most famous athlete in America was a horse. But Dan Patch was more than a sports star; he was a cultural icon in the days before the automobile. Born crippled and unable to stand, he was nearly euthanized. For a while, he pulled the grocer's wagon in his hometown of Oxford, Indiana. But when he was entered in a race at the county fair, he won -- and he kept on winning. Harness racing was the top sport in America at the time, and Dan, a pacer, set the world record for the mile. He eventually lowered the mark by four seconds, an unheard-of achievement that would not be surpassed for decades... His achievements have faded, but throughout the years, a faithful few kept alive the legend of Dan Patch, and in Crazy Good, Charles Leerhsen travels through their world to bring back to life this fascinating story of triumph and treachery in small-town America and big-city racetracks. NOTE: Club Member Cheryl Royer tells us that the 44th Annual Dan Patch Days Festival is Sept. 6-8, 2013 in Oxford, Indiana at Rommel Park. Check it out for great food, music, Dan Patch memorabilia contests, and other activities!

12 INDIANA MORGAN HORSE CLUB NEWSLETTER PAGE 11 USDA Adopts Animal Disease Traceability Program (AHC NEWS Winter 2013) Reprinted from American Horse Council Website - 01/23/ :38 In a move that many thought would never happen, the U.S. Department of Agriculture instituted its Animal Disease Traceability Program on January 9, The system, which will become effective March 11, is intended to improve USDA s and state authorities ability to trace livestock, including horses, in the event of a disease outbreak. The new system applies to all livestock moving interstate. Under the new federal regulations, horses moving interstate must be identified and accompanied by an Interstate Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (ICVI), commonly called a health certificate. The new system is built on methods of identification and movement documentation that are already employed in the horse industry, e.g., written descriptions, digital photographs, brands, tattoos, electronic identification methods, and interstate certificates of veterinary inspection. The person or entity responsible for moving the horse interstate must ensure that it has an ICVI or other document required by the new rule, said Jay Hickey, president of the American Horse Council. The ADTP will be administered by the states with federal support. The new rules also apply to movements to and from a Tribal area. In those cases, the Tribal authorities are involved in the system. The horse industry has been dramatically affected by serious disease outbreaks in the last ten years, which have halted or restricted the movement of horses and the commerce surrounding the horses. The new program is intended to help the Department, state authorities and the horse industry better deal with such disease outbreaks and to minimize disease effects on horses and economic effects on owners and the industry. This new rule is based on the previous National Animal Identification System (NAIS), which was the original voluntary system proposed by USDA to deal with disease outbreaks and traceability. The NAIS was not supported by much of the livestock industry, requiring USDA to reconsider its approach. This more limited and simpler system just adopted is the result. The new system does not require the registration of premises housing livestock or the specific reporting of individual movements of horses, noted Hickey. The new rules will be effective March 11, We expect that there will be a transition period during which USDA will not enforce the new rule. This is to give livestock owners time to understand the rules and make any changes necessary to comply. We don t know how long that period might be, said Hickey. Under the new regulations, horses moving interstate must be identified and accompanied by a health certificate or other state-approved document, such as an EIA test chart or equine passport approved by the animal health officials in the sending and receiving states. Horses may be identified by methods currently used in the horse community, such as a description sufficient to identify the individual horse including, name, age, breed, color, gender, distinctive markings, and unique and permanent forms of identification, such as brands, tattoos, scars, cowlicks, blemishes, or biometric measurements. Electronic identification may also be used as may digital photographs. All states now require an ICVI to accompany any horse entering their state. This should make for a smooth transition to the new traceability rule since most horse owners moving their horses interstate for breeding, racing, showing, sale, etc. should already be in compliance with the provisions of the new rule, noted Hickey. In the event of a disease outbreak, these documents will be used to trace horses that are or have been at the site of the outbreak and horses that have come into contact with them. The full language of the new rule can be viewed via the AHC website. The AHC recommends that any horse owner moving horses interstate or involved in that process review the new requirements to ensure they are complying with them.

13 INDIANA MORGAN HORSE CLUB NEWSLETTER PAGE 12 IMHC Spring Trail Ride at Salamonie River State Forest The Spring May 18 th Trail ride is going to be a scenic ride in a less well known State Park. We are going to visit Salamonie River State Forest this year for our trail ride. Please do NOT look up the directions on the internet because I have not been able to find accurate ones yet. Even the address on the IN.Gov site will not get you there. You will get directions but they will take you to the more traveled, less interesting side of the park. The state forest will give us some great scenic rides along ridges and along the Salamonie Reservoir. We will also ride through a walnut grove and can ride to the lower side of the dam. There is a waterfall and lots of shade. The trails can be rocky but are safe. Shoes are recommended if your horse has tender feet. However, only a few of our horses will be shod. Horse tags will be needed which will last for the year. These are $10 per horse and I can purchase in advance if you plan on coming (everything is based on an honor system as they do not sell tags there). Please pack a meal and beverages to drink along the way. Pack snacks to share. We will have two sets of arrival times. For the early birds, plan on arriving around 8:30am. For those who have a further drive, plan on arriving around 10:30am. I will meet both groups at camp and if we have enough riders, will split into groups for those who like a slower more enjoyable ride and for those who like the adrenaline rush (kids). Coming from the North: Start out going South on SR 13. Take a left on SR24 and travel 2 miles. You will see a sign indicating Lagro. Turn right onto 524 and go 2 mi to reach Lagro. The day camp is behind the regular camping where you follow the loop, park at the end and join the rest of us for a super fun ride! For the Google Addicted, if you must google Lagro, Indiana to follow my directions and use the search engine provided or the directions won t show correctly. If you are coming, please call in advance so that I can get horse tags if you need tags and to watch for you as the reception can be bad in this area. I look forward to a fun and exciting ride!
