2 Englewood Farms The John and Joanne Tobe Family Limousin Production Sale Dear Limousin Breeders, Joanne and I would like to invite you to attend this years Values and Vision Sale. We promise you a good time, great cattle and a wonderful atmosphere to visit with others in the Limousin breed. I owe a sincere thanks to the Limousin Breed and many of its producers for partnering with Laura s Lean Beef (Laura s) some 20 years ago. Laura s did not have a defined cattle program when I joined the Company, and a local cattle buyer suggested we try Limousin bulls on commercial females. We started using Limousin cross cattle and the rest is history. My partner and I grew Laura s business from a $1 million to over $160 million in 2007 when we sold the business. During the Laura s years we had sheer tests and taste panel tests done on Laura s steaks from Limousin cross cattle and the results were amazing in that Laura s steaks tested as tender as choice and prime steaks, and more tender than other exotic cattle steaks. I only learned about the Myostatin gene marker F94L in 2007 and since most of our producers used Fullblood bulls the F94L gene marker would have been present in many of our cattle. Englewood Farms will always maintain a herd of Fullblood Limousin cattle. We will continue to improve the genetics in our Fullblood herd and hope to produce more cattle like ENGD Unbridled 832U in the future with above breed average EPD S in growth, milk and rib. When we planned to sell Laura s in 2007, I decided to get more involved in the Limousin seedstock business and invested in a herd of purebred Limousin cattle. John Ethington joined Bob and I as herdsman with a primary focus on building the purebred herd, one at a time, from some great Limousin cattle. I am very pleased with the Purebred herd John selected and the matings he has produced during these three years. Many of the heifers from these matings will be in the female sale this year. I think you will like them. Our initial effort in the purebred cattle was to maintain muscle in these purebreds so when crossed with other breeds they could primarily produce choice grade carcasses and eliminate most yield grade 4 s and 5 s. Another benefit from these thicker purebreds is better feed efficiency for their calves on the feedlots. During the past year we have purchased several Angus and Lim-Flex females that are very high in Marbling. The Lim-Flex cattle produced by these females will add considerably more marbling than our present selection of Limousin cattle. We will offer some Lim-Flex genetics in this year s sale but plan to have many more in the following years. Our goal is to produce and sell the best Limousin Fullbloods, Purebred and Lim-Flex cattle possible. We hope you can join us on sale day to see first hand the sale offerings, the feed efficient bulls just back from the test station and our battery of herd sires.
