Although the origins of the breed are not clear, Spanish experts adamantly maintain that it is in fact a native of Spain and does not owe one single feature of its makeup to any other breed. 4 Page 4 The Inside Scoop on Dressage & the Spanish Horse Direct from Spain I keep in touch on a regular basis with Kimberly Denahm-Walters. She recently asked some very pointed questions of Victor Alvarez of Girona, Spain and got some really great feedback. Victor and his wife Maya are both international Grand Prix dressage competitors. Below is their conversation, both in English and Spanish. Question 1. The Germans are number one in Classical Dressage. What is the secret to their success? The Germans are the inventors of classical dressage for competition. They are the ones who have spent more time and have developed the bases and the technique, as well as developing the breed that meets the requirements they demand in competitions. Question 2. Which is the philosophy of the German breeders? Do they work with a common objective or do they have an individual objective? German breeders produce according to what the market demands. Today the market demands horses with extraordinary movements, with class and presence. The problem they come up with is that these horses tend to have strong temperaments, which makes them accessible only to professionals. The advantage of the Spanish horses is that they have noble temperaments. What must be done is to select those horses with the best physique and best movements. The question is how to define a good physique and what do we mean by good movements. I think we should inform breeders of both concepts. When we talk about colors, we know there are no good horses with bad colors, but there are quite a few bad horses with colors that are in fashion. To breed for color is a grave mistake. What is important is to take the initiative to increase the breeder's understanding of what is a good horse. Question 3. Comments about the owners who will support the program and their responsibility to improve this breed and its success. It is fine to look for those owners or breeders who are willing to finance a program to improve the breed of the Spanish horse. Only those horses endowed with the proper conditions should be admitted to the program, in order to represent the breed in competitions without loosing dignity. I think it would be wise to evaluate the breeder's products from the moment of birth, so as to select quality movements from the beginning, selecting from that early age the future candidates. Afterwards, those which, apart from being good movers, develop a physique that can put up with the demands of the sport, will be the ones included in the program. Pregunta nº 4 -Entrenadores disciplinados que están bien preparados y que pueden competir caballos Pura Raza German breeders produce according to what the market demands. Today the market demands horses with extraordinary movements, with class and presence. The problem they come up with is that these horses tend to have strong temperaments, which makes them accessible only to professionals. Continued on next page

The program known as revision or valoration designates the approved horses as Apto (approved) as breeding animals. The names of the approved breeding horses are entered in the Spanish stud book which is controlled by a branch of the Spanish government known as In 1988 the Idaho Horse Council commissioned the University of Idaho to conduct and publish a horse census and economic impact statement. The first survey findings published in the 1991 Idaho Agricultural Statistics magazine show just under one billion dollars spent in Idaho on horses, capital equipment, facilities, travel equipment, and related expenses: including farriers, hay, grain, veterinarians, training, insurance, and advertising. The I.H.C. has made a commitment to update the equine census every five years. The survey showed equine-owners in Idaho hold an estimated total $1.6 billion in assets related to their horses and other equine. The horse industry contributed to this state s Española en competiciones de doma. The first step in this process is called inscription. This process will be open for the year 2005 to Spanish horse owners who have not previously presented stock, to enter the program, thus the title Open Inscription. With the 2004 modification of the rules for approval by the Cria, all PRE candidates, regardless of age, must first be inscribed. Inscription is no longer handled by the revision team but is done in a two step printed Idaho Horse Council Commissioned Study economic well-being with an estimated $7.57 million in total sales in 2000 through the ownership and expenses related to owning equine. Equine ownership increased by 23 percent (23%) since the last equine census in Equine in Idaho are an important part of the state s history and culture. Since the contemporary number of total equine in Idaho has grown significantly in recent decades, the relative value of those animals and equine related activities has become a vital economic contribution to the state. Question 4. Comments about well prepared trainers who can ride pure bred Spanish horses in classical dressage competitions. The training program should be lead by a competent Head Trainer who is willing to go on a Page 5 application with verification of the identity assigned to preapproved U.S. veterinarians. The horses that are successfully inscribed in 2005 will then (if they are of age, i.e. at least three years) be eligible for revision examination in the following year, i.e The PRE Commission urges you to begin this process if you plan to show your stock in the Cria approved PRE classes in Ft. Most new state funding for WDFW, DNR and State Park acquisitions also comes from this program In 2005, the Coalition will lobby the legislature for a $60 million appropriations to fund the best of 122 park and habitat grant proposals. They will also try to expand the WWRP grant program by reintroducing legislation to protect and restore land along our rivers and streams, and to conserve precious farmland. One example of the current proposals for funding is the Centennial Trail, Snohomish County. This trail adds 9 miles of paved and equestrian trail from Arlington to the Centennial Trail in Skagit County. It connects with 7 miles of trail between Snohomish and Lake Stevens and 9 miles being built between Lake Stevens and Arlington. Snohomish County seeks $1.75 million so that residents may enjoy the recreational and health benefits of walking, running and riding trails. Despite the success in funding the WWRP projects, our growing population needs more parks and trails and precious habitat for many species is rapidly disappearing. As the price of land, and the size of our population increases, WWRP funding needs to increase, too! Please contact your legislators to support our request. 8 Page 8 OREGON STATE NEWS Man Sentenced in Connection with Video Production Company BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A 45-year-old man has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison after pleading guilty to mail and wire fraud charges in connection with a video production company he ran that targeted horse breeders and ranchers around the country. Bruce Carroll, who recently lived in Oregon, Nevada and Montana, on Thursday was also ordered to pay back clients $162,485. Carroll was indicted by a federal grand jury in September Between 2001 and 2003, he defrauded more than 50 people around the country, including at least two in Vermont, the U.S. attorney's office said. According to court records, Carroll would agree to film and edit a 30-minute video of the client's ranch and arrange to have the video shown on national television in exchange for fees ranging from $1,500 to $7,500. The indictment says Carroll defrauded clients by not appearing to shoot film in some instances and not producing a completed video. Carroll also failed to pay refunds to disappointed clients as he had promised in contracts, according to the indictment. He was also charged with defrauding a client an additional $3027 by promising to obtain a video camera that the client never received. Carroll has been held without bail since November when the court found he had violated the terms of his release and revoked his bail. YOO-HOO OREGONIANS! 9 NWAHA SPRING 2005 NEWSLETTER Page 9 is essential to also consider your mare as a riding horse and build your breeding decision upon what is needed to produce a rideable type in her offspring. The Importance of Interior and Exterior Values By Scott Hassler from Horizons - a Hilltop Farms Publication As breeders of sporthorses, the aim of any breeding combination should be to produce a horse that is of real quality for riding. The typical way of evaluation breeding stock is to consider the conformation, movement and pedigree of each individual. These categories certainly provide information, but there is much more to learn from when you look into the interior/ exterior values of your mare of her offspring. While it is important to judge conformation, movement, and pedigree, it is essential to also consider your mare as a riding horse and build your breeding decision upon what is needed to produce a rideable type in her offspring. Ideally, interior/exterior values are evaluated under saddle, however you can also learn to carefully observe the horse at liberty and by handling. Let s use the trot as an example of the quality of movement. Consider the horse with a 9 trot [based on a judging scale of 1-10, 10 being the best] at the breed show or inspection. Typically, the expression of this trot creates oohs and ahhs among everyone watching. However, when we evaluate this trot by forming questions based on the interior/ exterior values, we start to understand more about this 9 trot. Some of the questions you would want to ask yourself are as follows: Is this trot artificial? Could I ride a half-halt? Would I be comfortable sitting this trot or would I be bouncing out of the saddle? Is the horse s back relaxed or is the tail stiff, or even up in the air? These are ways of looking deeper into what you see. They are the trainability/rideability issue that are part of the Interior Values. We have to be able to ride the horses we produce and upon this standard we need to honestly evaluate them! Very often I see 8 s and 9 s give for a trot, which I can agree with by the judging sheet they have to use. But from a horseman s standpoint, when I ask all of these questions, my answer is often that the 8 or 9 trot is really only a 6. Many times, these horses with a 9 trot are moving out of excitement and are very stiff, therefore the lack suppleness. Suppleness is a major key in rideability and trainability. The next time you need to make a breeding decision, be sure you consider the interior/exterior values of your mare, her offspring, and the stallion. There is much to be gained by focusing on each as a riding horse and appreciating their responsiveness, trainability, and rideability first. INTERIOR VALUES: Mind Energy Reproductive Quality Pedigree/Genetics Consistency in Offspring Character Temperament Trainability/Rideability EXTERIOR VALUES: Sport & Breeding records Conformation Movement Correctness of Gaits Balance Suppleness Acceptance of Aids Eye, Back, Tail, Ears, Mouth and Neck Self Carriage Age

12 Page 12 New Form Requirement from IALHA for PRE (and PSL?) Horses Do you breed PRE horses? Then this information is important to you! This year IALHA and FAB-PRE-USA have agreed to work together on microchipping PRE horses with a chip that fits the requirement of the Cria Caballar. A separate form is available for downloading on the IALHA website ( under the Registry section. The form is entitled Special Form for IALHA Foals Being Inscribed in Foreign Studbooks. The form instructions read : This form must be submitted at the same time as the IALHA Registration Application is submitted or there may be additional fees required. The submission of this form will cause a specific IALHA microchip number to be assigned to this foal. It is the foal owner s responsibility to make sure that the correct microchip is applied to this animal at time of inscription in the foreign studbook. Included with the microchip will be a DNA/PV test hair kit that carrier the specific microchip number for this foal as required by the foreign registries. After reading this information, it may be that the Portuguese horses also need to fill out this new form, but one of you Lusitano folks will have to let me know so I can share the information with the membership. Open Inscription: How to get started Application forms for Issuance of a breeder codigo number for your farm/business are available on the website FAB-PRE-USA is the Federation that oversees Inscription and Revision for the USA. Download one of these forms and submit it, in Spanish if required, to the FAB office in Nashville, TN. The applications are forwarded to Spain monthly, on the last Friday of the month. The application process takes up to three months. Upon receipt of your breeder s codigo # you will be ready to proceed with inscription. Preceding inscription filing, it will be necessary to complete the Service Application or Solicitud de Servicio which must be sent by the breeder to the FAB-PRE- USA office, in Spanish, with a check for required fees. The new breeder must submit this application listing his Spanish breeder s number and current farm information. It is very important that the breeder apply to the IALHA registry for a microchip and DNA hair kit for each horse (if not already completed), so it will be on hand for the veterinar- ian doing the inscription. All rules and regulations are newly revised and posted on the site. It is a step by step process to understand the proper procedures. 20 Page 20 Horse Coat Color 101 from UC Davis website INTRODUCTION The basic coat colors of chestnut, bay, brown and black horses are controlled by the interaction between two genes: Extension (gene symbol E) and Agouti (gene symbol A). The Extension gene (red factor) controls the production of red and black pigment. Agouti controls the distribution of black pigment either to a points pattern (mane, tail, lower legs, ear rims) or uniformly over the body. The effects of approximately 10 other genes may modify these pigments to provide an array of colors in the domestic horse ranging from white to black. The basic colors can be diluted by at least four genes: Cream, Champagne, Dun and Silver. The Cream gene has a dosage effect in that a single copy of Cream produces palominos, buckskins and smoky blacks. Two doses of Cream produce cremellos, perlinos and smoky creams. Champagne, Dun and Silver do not show a dosage effect. There are several genes responsible for white patterns on horses. White spotting patterns on the base coat color are produced by the Dominant White (one big spot), Appaloosa, Tobiano and Overo genes or as mixed white and colored hair patterns produced by the Grey (progressive whitening with age) and Roan genes. Several genes may be involved in the production of white spotting patterns known as overo. Among those, the gene responsible for the frame-overo pattern is associated with a lethal disease of newborn foals called overo lethal white foal syndrome. Most color assignments can be correctly made based on physical appearance or phenotype alone. However, genetic testing may be necessary to define phenotypes that are visually ambiguous, such as bays with flaxen manes and tails or chestnuts with dark manes and tails. The same holds true when it is desirable to know which coat colors can be produced by breeding stock. Researchers at the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory and other institutions are working towards the identification of the specific genes and mutations responsible for coat color traits in the horse. In the future, diagnostic tests may be available for all the major coat color genes. Currently, genetic tests are available for: Extension (Red Factor), Agouti, Cream Dilution and Lethal White Overo. RED FACTOR EXTENSION The Extension gene (red factor) has two alternative states (alleles). The dominant allele E produces black pigment in the coat. The recessive allele e produces red pigment. Red horses (chestnuts, sorrels, palominos and red duns, to name a few) are homozygous, that is they have two alleles, for the recessive red allele ee. Black pigmented horses (black, bay, brown, buckskin and grullo, to name a few) have at least one E allele. They can be homozygous EE or heterozygous Ee. A horse that is homozygous EE will not produce red offspring, regardless of the color of the mate. The DNA diagnostic test for red factor can be used to identify those black horses for which neither pedigree nor breeding records is informative for identifying carriers of the recessive red factor. Since red is inherited as a recessive trait, it is relatively easy to start up a breeding program that will produce only red horses. It has been more difficult to initiate a black breeding program as black Ee horses can produce red foals. Prior to the development of this test, only pedigree or breeding records, not phenotype, could provide information about whether black horses are EE or Ee. The results of the test are reported as: e: Only the red factor detected. The horse can be assumed to be homozygous for red (ee). The basic color is sorrel or chestnut, but depending on genes at other color loci, the horse could be palomino, red dun, gray, cremello, white or any of these colors with the white hair patterns tobiano, overo, roan or appaloosa. Ee: Both black and red factors detected. The horse can be assumed to be heterozygous for the red factor (Ee). It can transmit either E or e to its offspring. The basic color of the horse will be black, bay or brown, but depending on genes at other color loci, the horse may be buckskin, zebra dun, grullo, perlino, gray, white or any of these colors with the white hair patterns tobiano, overo, roan or appaloosa. E: No red factor detected. The horse can be assumed to be homozygous for black pigment (EE). It cannot have red foals, regardless of the color of the mate. The basic color of the horse will be black, bay or brown, but depending on genes at other color loci, the horse may be buckskin, zebra dun, grullo, perlino, gray, white or any of these colors with the white hair patterns tobiano, overo, roan or appaloosa. AGOUTI (BLACK BAY) The Agouti gene controls the distribution of black pigment. The dominant allele A restricts black pigment to the points of the horse (mane, tail, lower legs and ear rims), as seen, for example, in bays and buckskins. The recessive allele a uniformly distributes black pigment over the entire body. Breeders interested in producing black horses need to have breeding stock carrying the a allele, in addition to the E allele of the Extension gene. Using results from the red factor and agouti tests, see table of breeding schemes below to produce black animals. Test results are reported as: A or Aa: Black pigment distributed in point pattern. The basic color of the horse will be bay or brown in the absence of other modifying genes. A has no effect on red pigment (ee). a: Only recessive allele detected. Black pigment distributed uniformly. The basic color of the horse will be black in the absence of other modifying genes. CREAM DILUTION The Cream dilution gene is responsible for the palomino, buckskin, smoky black, cremello, perlino and smoky cream coat colors. There are two alleles: C Cr and C. C Cr is semi-dominant and dilutes red to yellow in single dose (palominos, buckskins, smoky blacks) and to pale cream in double dose (cremellos, perlinos, smoky cream). Cream dilution can have a very subtle effect on black pigment. C is recessive and does not dilute the base color.

21 NWAHA SPRING 2005 NEWSLETTER The results of the test are reported as: N: Non-dilute. Basic colors are chestnut, bay, black or brown in the absence of other modifying genes. N/Cr: Heterozygous, dilute, one copy of the Cream C Cr allele. Chestnut is diluted to palomino; bay is diluted to buckskin and black is diluted to smoky black. These colors can be further modified by the actions of other genes. Cr: Double dilute (two copies of the C Cr allele). Chestnut is diluted to cremello; bay is diluted to perlino and black is diluted to smoky cream. Note: The test offered by VGL is specific for a mutation in exon 2 of the MATP gene that is associated with Cream Dilution. Other dilution genes or mutations that may produce coat colors that phenotypically resemble cream will not be detected by the test. LETHAL WHITE/OVERO Since this issue does not currently affect our breed, it has been omitted here. However, information on this genetic anomaly and testing for it is offered by UC Davis Vet Gen Lab. All information in this article and the table below is from the website Page 21 On this website there is an additional detailed research paper which gets further into the genetics and possible variances. For breeders interested in what color their horses may produce, you can also download and submit a form and hair sample to find out exactly what genetic color make up your horse has and what possible combinations will produce the different colored off spring. 24 Page 24 Diatomaceous Earth: The "Silver Bullet" Not long ago, I started talking about diatomaceous earth [DE] as an insecticide. Boy, was I a genius. This stuff had only been around since near the beginning of time. It's been nature's insecticide since than and its other uses are many. So why haven't the university systems and all the gardening experts been recommending it for years? More recently I started talking about using natural DE as a food supplement for animals. The results are almost too good to believe - even for me, and the question again comes up - why am I the only one recommending this stuff? Seems like the vets should be extolling the virtues of DE from the highest hills. Undaunted (hard headed might be a better choice of words), I wrote about DE in the Dallas Morning News and when I started the gardening show at WBAP, it was the main topic of conversation. So much so that my boss told me that show was getting a little boring from talking about DE every call. I didn't ask the questions - just answered them. Natural diatomaceous earth is Diatoms proliferate by cell division accompanied by a reduction in size. Once the cells reach a certain size, sexual reproduction the remains of microscopic one-celled plants (phytoplankton) called diatoms that lived in the oceans that once covered the western part of the United States and other parts of the world. Huge deposits were left behind when the water receded. They are now mined and have several important uses in toothpaste, beer filtering, and swimming pool filters. DE is approximately 3% magnesium, 86% silicon, 5% sodium, 2% iron and many other trace minerals such as titanium, boron, manganese, copper and zirconium. Natural DE also makes a very effective natural insecticide. The insecticidal quality of DE is due to the razor sharp edges of the diatom remains. When DE comes contact with the insects, the sharp edges lacerate the bugs' waxy exoskeleton and then the powdery DE absorbs the body fluids causing death from dehydration. Said more simply, DE kills insects by drying then up. You'll see how drying DE is if you handle it with bare hands. There is no residual danger of contamination. In fact, DE is actually beneficial to the soil. It's loaded with trace minerals. However, there are a few precautions. Diatomaceous earth is very dusty and can cause lung problems if breathed heavily, so when applying it dry always wear a good dust mask or stand up wind. The second precaution is that DE sold for swimming by Howard Garrett pool filters is ineffective for insect control because it has been heated and chemically treated. It won't kill insects and it is very dangerous to breathe. Finally natural DE will kill beneficial insects too, so use it sparingly to kill problem infestations of harmful insects and don't use it too often. Diatomaceous earth can be applied in a variety of ways. To use for flea and tick control, apply a light dusting over the lawn, in dog runs, around pet bedding or favorite resting spots and sprinkle a little on your pet between baths of a mild herbal soap. Avoid dips and soaps containing chemical insecticides. It's also a good idea to avoid soaps that contain ammonium laurel sulfate. It's used to make good studs but it is a skin irritant. Check out your own soap and tooth paste while you're at it. The best way to apply the dust over a large area is with a light weight apparatus such as Dustin' Mizer, Spritzer or other similar blowers. Applying by hands can be done but wastes a lot of material and will dry your skin. To apply with water, mix 1/4 cup of DE in a gallon The image above is a scanning electron micrograph of Cyclotella stelligera. Diatoms are unicellular algae generally placed in the family Bacillariophyceae. The cell walls of these organisms are made of silica, and the varied shapes and beautiful ornamentation of these walls made the study of the diatoms and related siliceous organisms a favored pursuit of the microscopical pioneers. Diatoms are either symmetric bilaterall, the way humans are, or around a central axis, much like a

To catch the reader's attention, place an interesting sentence or quote from the story here. of water and apply to the lawn and/or shrubs where pest problems exist. It doesn't hurt insects until it dries out. One of the best uses of DE is to add it to animal food - pets or livestock. When used at 1% to 2% of the food volume, it controls internal parasites, increases digestion and provides valuable trace minerals. You will usually see an overall increase in health of any animals fed DE on a regular basis. Here are some of the common questions I get on natural diatomaceous earth: Is DE dangerous to my pets, me or my family? Since DE is dusty and abrasive, it can cause lung damage if breathed heavily. remember, however, that breathing any dusty materials can be dangerous. be sure to wear a dusk mask if applying with a dry blower. Mixing into a water spray eliminates most of these problems. DE will not hurt earthworms or beneficial soil microorganisms. DE is one of the few pesticides in the world classified as non-toxic, although I'm not real comfortable with the classification. I think anything can be toxic if over used or misused. How much DE should I feed my animals? Some of the feeding rations suggested by suppliers and users include: 1-2% by weight of DE in ground, dry feed. 5% by weight in stored grain. 5 ounces (one cup) daily ration for horses. One tablespoon per day for large dogs (over 55 lb.). One teaspoon per day for small dogs, cats and puppies. Does spraying DE in a wet solution work as well as the dry dust? The wet spray method does work but only after the liquid had dried. Mix from 1-4 tablespoons DE per gallon of water and spray on the lawn, shrubs, tree trunks and building foundations. When the mixture dried, it has the same abrasive and dehydrating powers as the original dry dust. When sprayed wet the material covers the foliage and other surfaces better than dusting dry, thus giving better insect control. It seems to last longer when applied wet, but the dry application is usually more effective at killing insects quickly. DE has no insect killing power while it is wet. Can I mix DE with other sprays? Yes, it can be mixed with other organic products such as seaweed, fish emulsion, garlic tea, and biostimulants. It would be silly to mix DE with chemical insecticides. In fact, it's silly to use synthetic toxic pesticides for anything. Is DE registered by the EPA and labeled for insect control? Yes! Some people would have you believe that DE is untested, unlabeled and therefore unsafe for use. That's just one of the feeble arguments left to the organiphobes. DE has been used for years in the food processing industry to treat stored gains to eliminate weevil and other insect infestations. There are currently dozen of registrations of DE with the EPA for various insecticidal and food supplement uses. DE, with and without pyrethrins and piperonyl butoxide, is registered and labeled for fleas, ants, roaches and many other pests. Piperony butoxide (PBO) is a synthetic synergism that is added to increase the killing power of the product. I do not recommend it for any use. Those wanting to avoid it can mix pure pyrethrum and DE together at a 25% -75% ratio. Pyrethrum products that are available include Natural Guard and ECOsafe. There is approximately 1% pyrethrin in natural pyrethrum powder. Pyrethroids are synthetic insecticides. They do not resemble natural pyrethrum and should not be used. (note: ECOsafe was a tradename for Natural Animal) Source: Natural Animal Home & Garden Products The razor sharp edge of an diatom exoskeleton. Added Notes: Be sure the Diatomaceous Earth is FOOD GRADE. There is a lesser quality DE sold for swimming pools. This is NOT the same. Dust it over manure piles or onto the manure spreader.

The award criteria will be available on the premium list for NWAHA s June show. Points will be accumulated at each show, so attending all three shows puts the horse/rider team at a great advantage. Mark your calendar! Carla Shown of Moonstruck Meadows has offered a bronze Andalusian doing the Spanish Walk for an award. And PAALH will be making a donation of another bronze. The bronzes will be mounted on a wood base and will make im Pacific Rim High Point Award pressive trophies. The idea is that the trophies will be perpetual at this time. If donations are made each year to support the award and there is a lot of support for the award, it may be a permanent trophy. It will hopefully become a sought after thing to win and we will be able to find benefactors to make this a big deal each year. This award is still under discussion, but has been well received. The idea is that the award item would travel to all three shows and be on display to generate excitement and then be awarded at the August Show on the last day. 28 Page 28 Celebrity Shania Twain and her Andalusian Dancer From BOP by staff reporter, Susan Denham Shania Twain is riding high on something besides the charts, if excerpts from a recent letter to fans are any indication. In it, she reveals her hidden love for the animal kingdom - most notably, a passion for horses that would make Peter Shaffer blush. The passage from her 1997 letter to fan club members is quoted here in full. We invite you to read between the lines and enjoy the special selection of pictures that we have added for your viewing pleasure. "I was able to squeeze in a personal trip to Saville, Spain in November. It just happened to work out that I could take off for a few days to a horse show that was taking place there. I Farm News Broken Auger Once again my patient husband has suffered through yet another property improvement (that's what I call them, but I believe he refers to them as money pits). We have added a full size outdoor sand dressage arena so I can host dressage schooling shows as well as riding outdoors when the weather is nice. We will be hosting a local schooling show for the Whatcom Dressage and Eventing Association April 2nd and have been busy rearranging fences, pastures and putting in drainage. I am anxiously awaiting my only spring foal out of Nevada St. C. which is due any day now. The rest of my herd continues to grow; not in numbers so much as physical size. Zamora, my imported Brazilian filly (photo in my ad on pg 2) looks like she'll really wanted to go so I was absolutely thrilled when everything fell into place and I was able to get there. I've never seen horses like I saw there in my entire life! They were all Andalusians. Well, was I in horse heaven!" "Two months at this place wouldn't have been enough for me! I learned quite a bit about these horses in the short time that I was there so every chance I've had since I returned, I've been practising and working poor Dancer. I practically jumped on his back the minute I got back from Spain!" "We've been experimenting, (well, I have anyway) with all these new moves that I learned as I also try to remember all the tips I got from the pros. And if easily reach her dams height of 16 hands and I'm hoping the right buyer comes along who will show her in dressage before breeding her. My half-bred Quarteto gelding is 16 hands and growing and he hasn't turned three yet. I hope he tops out soon so he doesn't get too tall for me as I'm hoping he will be my next dressage mount. My six month old stud colt out of my imported mare is proving to be a gorgeous mover and I am anxious for him to grow up so I can have my trainer start showing him. He already thinks he is king of the barn. Hope all of you are enjoying this fabulous spring weather and riding your horses! Looking forward to seeing everyone at the shows. Barbara Daugert I must say so myself, Dancer and I are not doing too badly at all." "My husband says it's becoming an obsession with me but I just tell him it's a passion. There's a difference! He still says though that one of these days, it wouldn't surprise him in the least if he'd wake up in the middle of the night, see I'm not there only to discover that I'm out with the horses. But really, it's not that bad! It just drives me crazy when I don't get the chance to ride for a long time. Then I start getting the 'itch' to ride. I just love my horses and I can't stay away from them. You understand don't you?!" Shania & dancer [Shania] plans to tour with her dog, a German shepherd named Tim, and one of her five horses, an Andalusian purebred named Dancer. Dancer will get his own trailer.

29 NWAHA SPRING 2005 NEWSLETTER Page 29 Calling All Volunteers!! Coming to the shows this summer? Why not join in the fun and volunteer while you're there! I am in the process of compiling a list of people who are willing to help out at the June 24-26th show. As I'm sure you know, the success of such events depends in great part on the active participation of club members and friends, both in the show ring and in supporting roles. We'll need folks to do a variety of things, all three days. If you would be willing to help out, please contact me, Julie Alonzo, (541) or via jalonzo@uoregon.edu) to let me know your availability and the type of help you are most interested in offering. One of our biggest challenges West Nile Virus Continues to Spread In US will be finding a licensed EMT to be on site during the show. If you have any connections in the medical world, please consider asking them if they would be willing to be there 'on call' for all or part of the weekend. Thanks for considering lending a hand; I look forward to meeting more of you in June. --Julie Alonzo West Nile Virus (WNV) has quickly spread throughout the United States. According to the USDA, as of December, 2004 there have been 22 documented equine WNV cases in Idaho, 31 in Oregon and 536 cases in California. Washington has not had a documented case of WNV, but it is only a matter of time. WNV is transmitted via mosquito from infected birds, it is not transmissible from horse to horse or other species. Fortunately the volume of virus a non-avian species carries is not enough to be transmitted to other animals or people via mosquito. Signs of WNV can be confused with other neurological diseases including rabies, EPM and equine encephalitis. You should contact your veterinarian if your horse exhibits any of the following symptoms: Ataxia (stumbling or incoordination) Weakness of limbs Partial paralysis Other neurological signs including head pressing, inability to swallow, depression or lethargy, wandering and circling and sudden impaired vision. It is interesting to note that fever was not often observed in clinical cases. Article from Ask the Vet published in Horses, Inc. Get more info about their publication at There is no specific treatment of WNV, but supportive therapy can help to save horses showing clinical signs. Even with supportive care, 1 out of 3 horses will not survive. Horse owners can take active steps to reduce chances of their horses contracting WNV. The most important is to vaccinate according to manufacturer s guidelines. Two vaccines are currently fully approved for equine use. The killed vaccine manufactured by Ft. Dodge Animal health had been in the sportlight from anxious breeders who were concerned that the vaccine may cause abortions or birth defects. According to the USDA, the vaccine is safe and should be used and that it does not appear that there is a relationship between WNV vaccine and reproductive problems. It is far more cost effective to vaccination than to spend thousands on supportive care and still run the risk of losing the horse. Additionally horse and facility owners can help to control the spread of WNV by eliminating mosquitoes and their breeding areas. Mosquitoes can reproduce in any still or stagnant body or water that is present for more than four days. Items such as tires, barrels, wading pools, unused wheelbarrows and even pool cover are idea breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Birdbaths should be kept clean and ornamental ponds should be aerated or stacked with fish. A simply walk around the property can greatly reduce the mosquito population and help protect your horses.

30 Page 30 Farm News ECV Ranch It s an early spring this year so we are off to a fast start. This month our two dressage performers, El Cid ECV and Prestito ECV will warm up at the Eagle Mt. Dressage Show on March 20 and on April 2, at the dressage schooling show at the Broken Auger Farm.. All of this is in preparation for the Going Baroque show in Boring, OR in June. Marioneta is in the process of a career change and is training Western Pleasure for She looks so relaxed in her new work.look for her in Boring also. In February we welcomed Paul de Fresne, a former NWAHA member from Kelowna, B.C., who stopped in for a look on his way to California. It was good to visit with Paul and he gave some nice compliments to our horses. You will see in this issue a photo ad for the five-year-old Prestigio son, El Cid ECV. He will be standing at stud this season here in the Pacific Northwest. In February he successfully completed his phantom training at Pilchuck Veterinary Center and is ready to go. This young stallion was a NWAHA Champion in 2004 and should make a big splash at the June show. The rest of the horses, including the Shetland pony adopted from the Woodland Park zoo, are fattening on the spring grass. We expect three foals this summer. Two are by Prestigio and one by Kianto from Jackass Mountain Ranch. I predict two colts and one filly. The inimitable Prestigio, our first foal and many time National Champion, is standing at stud at new facility in Los Alamos, CA in the company of Sue and Tammy. It is beautiful place and they treat him as royalty. I visited there in early February to find him looking absolutely magnificent. He is still the one that makes my heart sing. Doc and I are full time at the farm now as my Seattle residence has been sold. We are happy here away from the maddening crowd. Best wishes for a successful foaling season and we hope to see you all in Boring. Patty Jacob
