Because there s not much summer dressage activity in our area due to the heat, I think of the dressage year as two halves. The first half of the year is for setting new goals, moving up a level or correcting training issues. The second half of the year is for getting ready to compete at the end-of-year championship shows and starting to plan the next year s effort. The HDS Board follows a similar cycle. Planning for 2017 is already underway with most 2017 show officials hired. The second half of the year also includes the annual HDS Board election. Half of the Board is up for election every September for two year terms. The following positions need ballot nominations in 2016: President, Vice President, Schooling Shows, Junior/Young Rider, Sponsorships, Awards, Special Events and Historian/IT. If you or someone you know is interested in joining the HDS Board, please get in touch with me. The club has positive momentum and welcomes fresh ideas and energy. The Board is a great way to help grow our sport. Before you know it, 2017 will be here! Enjoy the summer. Leslie Rohrer - HDS President

6 Equine Disease Communication Center Launches Outbreak Alert Service - Owners, trainers, veterinarians and other equine industry participants can be alerted to infectious disease outbreaks and updates through an notification system recently implemented by the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC), an industry-funded hub for efficient communication of information about equine infectious diseases and disease outbreaks. The EDCC s Outbreak Alert service advises subscribers when an infectious disease outbreak is confirmed or an update to a previously reported outbreak is available, such as when a quarantine has been lifted. Each includes a link to the Disease Outbreak Alerts page of the EDCC website for detailed information about the alert. The alerts are available at no charge as a service to the industry; subscribe through the EDCC Mailing List link at Alerts and other information are also posted on the EDCC s social media platforms. Like the EDCC on Facebook at and on Twitter. The EDCC is based in Lexington, KY., at the AAEP s headquarters with website and call center hosting provided by the United States Equestrian Federation. The EDCC is funded entirely through the generosity of organizations, industry stakeholders and horse owners. At the USEF s Mid-Year Board meeting, President-Elect Murray Kessler presented a new Strategic Plan for the Federation. As part of that plan, Kessler identified the need for a Compliance Department and hiring of a CCO. The new department will have three primary responsibilities: ensuring compliance with competition standards, investigating incidents at licensed competitions, and monitoring internal compliance with USEF policies and procedures. USEF President Chrystine Tauber stated, The need for improved compliance is a high priority and the Board unanimously approved the position of Chief Compliance Officer. The creation of this position and department represents a significant change and a major step forward in the USEF s governance process. In appointing Fine to the new position, Moroney said, Matt s experience and credentials make him a logical fit for this position.
