1 Stall Street The Journal Summer 2014 The Official Newsletter of the Alamo Dressage Association The Stall Street Journal is published quarterly by, and for, the members of the Alamo Dressage Association. We are on the web at IN THIS ISSUE From the President, Jennifer Delmer Horse show volunteers Needed! Finally our first issue of Our apologies for the lateness of the issue! So here is an update on a few events that have occurred this spring and summer. New Junior Cash Back Program! The Alamo Dressage Spring Show was a success. We had two full days of rides and both rings were full. Thanks to all who took the time to volunteer and help. Each person s efforts help make the show run a bit more smoothly and we could not hold these shows without your support. Again, thank you for going above and beyond, it is very much appreciated. Horseperson of the Year Nominations Brittany Silvers wins ADA Scholarship Summer s End Show Entry Form RIDE FOR THE CURE! The ADA hosted the final portion of one of the USDF (L) programs at the Spring Show. We are thrilled to announce that two of our local members, Arlene Gaitan (past ADA president) and Eva Oldenbroek are now (L) judge graduates. The (L) program takes a substantial amount of effort, money and traveling to complete the series. Congratulations to these ladies on a job well done and we are proud to have them in our region. I am sure we will be seeing Eva and Arlene at local schooling shows shortly, occupying the judges booth. Smile and wave! Other events this summer include the ADA Summer show held at Russell Equestrian Center on Sunday, June 22nd. Arlene Gaitan donated her judging fee, Karen Peacock was manager, secretary and scorer and the Fiesta Pony Club was onsite selling baked goods. In addition we had a Western Dressage Clinic with Pam Fowler Grace, L. Pam is known best for her Appaloosa Dressage partner, Pay and Go, who performed in New York City at Linda McCartney s funeral. Pay and Go recently passed away. 6 horse and rider combinations worked with Pam on the basics of Western Dressage which has its roots in Classical Dressage. Thanks to Vicki Krebsbach for organizing the event! Pam will be back as a judge at our Summer s End Schooling Show at In the Irons on August 24th! This past spring, our Communications Chair, LaNet Hester, sent out a short membership survey asking questions that will enable us to understand our members personal needs. We are using the answers to this questionnaire to help improve future events. If you have suggestions or thoughts on educational events, please send them to Vikki at kkrebsbach@satx.rr.com Additionally, in the survey it was brought to my attention that members would like more showing options other than what is offered on the NW side of San Antonio. This was discussed in length by the board of directors recently. It is hard to find a low cost or FREE facility for events like In the Irons (who donates their facility) or Russell Equestrian Center (who charges $250). Ft. Sam was also low cost but now they require a health certificate for any equine on their property. If you have a facility in mind, please us and we would be more than happy to explore this option. We want to open up as many possibilities as we can for our members. Alamo Dressage Association is a Group Member Organization of the U.S. Dressage Federation. ADA s members are automatically USDF group members. For USDF Participating Membership, members must apply directly to USDF. Submissions close the 10th of the month prior to publication. Please send submissions to Arlene Gaitan at arlenegaitan@att.net or abgaitan@yahoo.com. ADA can be found at Alamo Dressage Association Quarterly Newsletter Summer 2014 Page 1

4 USDF L Program news Carolyn VandenBerg, Organizer Last year at the ADA September Fall Dressage Competition, ADA began hosting the Part 2 of the USDF L program. This is the final of a series of educational sessions that a person must take in order to become a USDF L graduate. (An L graduate is eligible to judge dressage schooling shows.) In order to enroll in the USEF licensed r dressage judge, one must pass the L program with a rating of distinction. The Part 2 program can only take a maximum of 10 participants, and no auditors. The 10 candidates must bear the cost of the three sessions and pay for them at the first session. ADA had 2 local candidates and 8 from out of state. The candidates are responsible for furnishing their own scribe, however because the 8 flew in, ADA furnished 7 scribes in the first session. The second session was held at the HDS Winter competition in Katy, TX in January. This gave the candidates an opportunity to judge a different set of riders. In April the written exam was held on Friday evening and the ADA spring dressage competition was the candidates final testing. They did the same format as previous sessions, judging the rides with a scribe on Saturday. But on Sunday they sat down one by one with the L faculty and orally judged a ride off of a DVD. I am happy to report all 10 candidates passed and 7 passed with distinction. Our two local newest USDF L graduates to be congratulated are: Arlene Gaitan and Eva Oldenbroek. (Eva passed with distinction.) The success of the program was largely due to the wonderful volunteers who scribed, scored and chauffeured. Thank you. USDF Region 9 Horseperson of the Year Nominations are being accepted for Region 9 Horse Person of the Year for Please see the Region 9 USDF website for criteria at Nomination should include: Name and brief biographical background Current position/activity Description of most significant contribution and/or services to dressage in the region Please submit by August 20th to: Carolyn VandenBerg vandenberg@gvtc.com or 112 Eden Ranch Dr. Canyon Lake, TX Alamo Dressage Association Quarterly Newsletter Summer Page 4

7 Brittany Silvers, Junior Scholarship Award Recipient Congratulations to Brittany Silvers, ADA Junior Scholarship Award Recipient! I began riding in lead line classes at the age of 5 when we lived in Virginia Beach, VA. I stopped for a short period of time when we moved to Texas, but started again when I was 9. I had an off the track quarter horse who I jumped, but I did some dressage as well. When I was 12 I donated my horse, Charlie, to a camp that I was attending and I began training solely dressage. I bought my current horse, Lamington, 3½ years ago. I have trained him through 2nd level and we are currently schooling third level. While training my horse up the levels, this year I showed my mom s horse, Dominic, and earned my USDF Bronze Medal. I look forward to continuing to learn the art of dressage and training horses in the future (Silvers, 2014). Upcoming Events, Clinics & Education Whit Watkins Clinics at Faithful Farm. 8 Show Report for 2014 ITI Schooling Show The March 2014 ADA Schooling Show at In The Irons Equestrian Center was booked with a full day of rides. The day started out beautifully with superb weather, yet mother nature turned the tables to drop the temperature 40 degrees with a wind chill in the low 30s. The majority of the riders pushed through and rode their tests in the questionable conditions. Mother Nature dealt us a few strange occurrences. For instance, flying chairs due to extreme wind gusts and even dressage letters taking off on their own into the arena. Kudos to those who stuck out the conditions, hopefully the next show will prove to be more weather friendly. Thank you to Brenda McCall L (judge), Vikki Krebsbach (scribe) and the numerous show volunteers who helped keep things in order. Alamo Dressage Association Quarterly Newsletter Summer Page 8
