We are on the web at IN THIS ISSUE Schooling Show photos Cash Back for Education Saddle fit tips Bits and Pieces Instructor Workshop ADA June Board Meeting Minutes End of Year Award Information Advertisements 2010 ADA Calendar Happy July!! The June show was a great success. You can view the results on our web page at The weather cooperated and despite the heat a breeze blessed us every now and then. Lolly and Bill Perry were wonderful hosts; their farm was a beautiful setting and Bill's burgers were a hit! Brenda McCall was our judge and was friendly and great to work with. We had two winners of the wacky tie contest, Erin Brewer and a friend won the Spurs folding chair, BBQ apron and flashlight. A big thanks to our volunteers: Bill Eash, Jody Carlson, Doug Christiansen, Karen and Kassidy Peacock, Jamyn Rosser, Gaby Perkins, Cel Cox and Cheryl and Rebecca Harlin. Without volunteers the show would not be possible! Thanks also to Laurie Virkstis who came to take photos. There are some great shots from the show. Check them out at her website Don't forget about the July show at Ft. Sam Houston! June 11, Closing date is July 5th so get your entries in now! Leigh Olejer has volunteered to be our show manager and I will secretary again. We NEED volunteers so let us know if you can spare some time. 3 Alamo A D A B r i n g s B a c k C a s h B a c k f o r E d u c a t i o n Great news for ADA members! Your ADA board voted to bring back the "cash back for education" program, beginning April 1, This program encourages ADA members to further their dressage education by offering $50 "cash back" to subsidize their costs for clinic and symposiums. ADA will set aside $1,500 to finance this program. When this money is spent, applications will be reviewed by the board on a case by case basis. Members may apply one time in the calendar year for a $50 education reimbursement. This cash back program helps members cover the cost of riding or auditing with new clinicians. ADA events and symposiums where members already receive a discount are not eligible for this program. This is a great opportunity for members to gain exposure and experience with new or unfamiliar clinicians. The clinician cannot be someone the reimbursed member rides with on a regular basis ("regular basis" is defined as follows: a clinician the member has ridden with twice in the past 12 months). To apply for this "cash back" reimbursement, members must fill out the designated form and give it to the Education chair NO LATER than 14 days after the event. Members must initially pay for the event and will be reimbursed pending approval. To be eligible for this program the member must have been an ADA member for more than 60 days prior to the date of the event. H o w t o G e t Y o u r " C a s h B a c k " C a s h B a c k 1. Members may apply for a $50 "cash back" reimbursement for any clinics or symposiums they attend to dressage education. 2. Members may receive only one $50 "cash back" for the 2010 calendar year. 3. ADA will allot $1500 for the "cash back" program. 4. Members will be reimbursed for qualified applications on a first come first serve basis. 5. If the $1500 is spent, members will be considered on a case-by-case basis. However, at this time, ADA makes no commitment past the allotted $ Who is eligible: Members who have been ADA members in good standing for at least 60 days prior to the event for which they seek "cash back" reimbursement. Clinics and symposiums held by clinicians/trainers the member does not ride with on a regular basis. This means, you cannot have ridden with the clinician more than two times in the past 12 months. In other words, you may not be reimbursed for attending a clinic given by your trainer or by a visiting clinician with which you have ridden with more than twice a month. 7. "Cash Back" forms must be returned to the Education Chair within 14 days AFTER the event. 8. "Cash Back" forms may be obtained from Liz Moser at ebmsr@yahoo.com. For more information, contact Director of Education, Liz Moser, ebmsr@yahoo.com. 4 Saddle Fit Tip #1 - Balance (in a series of 9 short videos) Are you struggling with your position? Is your horse lacking in its performance? Balance: Too High in Front Do you feel you are struggling to get balanced in the saddle and are feeling tipped back? Are you struggling with getting your horse engaged or is it experiencing back issues? If your saddle is too high off the horse's withers or too low in the back, this will cause a lot of excess uneven pressure on the horse's loins. It will not only put you in the wrong position, but it will be very difficult for your horse to engage as it will be unable to come through with its back and step underneath itself into a correctly engaged frame. Continued on Page 5 Printed courtesy of Schleese Saddlery We are a growing non-profit organization whose goal is to improve the sport of dressage in South Texas. We offer clinics, horse shows, newsletters, and miscellaneous other activities for our members. We donate a portion of our proceeds to therapeutic riding activities to help disabled people exercise and sometimes regain mobility. Some of the current beneficiaries are war veterans. (Next show is our Fall Dressage I and II, August 28th & 29th.) Alamo Dressage Association Monthly ewsletter March
5 Balance: Too Low in Front Do you feel tipped forward in the saddle? Is your horse resisting? If your saddle is too low in front, it will pinch the horse's shoulder - which is very restrictive for your horse! In this situation, your saddle may be too wide in the front or too high in the back. Not only will this cause discomfort for your horse but you will also be forcing yourself to sit in an unnatural position that may affect your riding or strain the discs in your lower back! Steps to check Saddle Balance: 1. Remove your saddle pad and irons. Place your saddle over the withers and slide it right back behind the shoulder blade. On a dressage saddle, the cantle should be a little higher than the pommel. 2. Take a small round object (like a pencil) that will roll. Place it on the seat of the saddle and observe. If the saddle is balanced the pencil should rest in the center of the seat. If it rolls too far forward the pommel is too low (cantle too high). If it rolls too far back, the saddle is too low in the cantle (pommel too high). It will be very difficult in either of these situations for both horse and rider to balance properly!
