The eastern States face challenging times and as a result, bull sale prices will no doubt ease. We ve seen the cycle before and know that whilst it s tough just focusing on the daily management of cattle and feeding, this year provides you with the perfect window to upgrade your sire power and invest in new genetics. The very real genetic gain that Palgrove bulls offer year after year is supported by genuine feedback: Palgrove sired progeny boost the returns of our stud clients at their bull sales (see story at Lot 18) Commercial weaners sired by Palgrove bulls command a premium at major sales. Agents, processors and feedlotters report is that there is genuine demand for Palgrove blood cattle right across the value chain. Palgrove genetics are bred with true balance across all the profit traits. You ll see it across this catalogue. Whether you re seeking faster early weight gain; a boost to your herd s fertility; carcase (eye muscle; fat cover and marbling) or looking for sire that will get you to a range of markets more efficiently - we guarantee that you will find one of our sale bulls to fit your requirements. We undertake actual measurements and submit more trait (fertility, weight and carcase) information to Breedplan than any other Charolais breeder in the country. This means with Palgrove EBVs, you don t have to rely on approximates, calculated simply on pedigree-based information. Make 2018 the Year that you invest in Palgrove Sire Power! It s an honour to present the 107 Charolais and 65 Ultrablack bulls to our long term and first-time clients. Hope to see you on Friday 14th September for our Palgrove Annual Sale at Strathgarve. David, Prue and the Palgrove team. stop press! It has just been announced at the Brisbane Ekka that Palgrove is the Overall Winner (100 Day) of the Paddock to Palate competition. Details on the back page of this catalogue!

2 2018 RNA PADDOCK TO PALATE WIN FOR PALGROVE The recent announcement that Palgrove had been awarded top honours in one of Australia s most prestigious commercial cattle competitions rates as of our proudest business achievements. Palgrove was named the Overall Winner (100 Day) in the blue ribbon Paddock to Palate competition at the Brisbane Ekka The purebred Charolais steers also won Reserve Champion Carcase (100 Days). Some of Australia s best producers participate in what is the country s richest cattle competition. It provides us with opportunity to test our steers against the best and validate the commercial production focus we place on our genetics. Now in its nineteenth year, the event attracts the nation s top beef producers and saw 644 steers entered from 92 exhibitors. It is part of the Brisbane RNA s commitment to celebrate and champion agriculture by recognising industry excellence and encouraging consumer promotion. The Paddock to Palate competition consists of three phases. The Overall Winner is awarded on the best aggregate points for a) weight gain in the feedlot b) a carcass appraisal and finishes with c) the MSA eating quality competition. Palgrove was fortunate to have been named Runner Up Overall Winner in the 2017 event, so this year s top award is a real honour. In 2016, Palgrove also won the Highest Weight Gain phase of the competition. For 34 years, Palgrove successfully showed stud cattle, holding the record for more Interbreed wins than any other stud. Once we made the decision not to continue showing, it seemed a natural progression to enter commercial steer competitions such as the Paddock to Palate. We firmly believe that when a producer invests in a bull, that bull should add value to the whole industry through weight gain, optimum carcase and eating quality. These attributes should be part of his DNA and should be balanced. We congratulate the RNA cattle committee, Mort & Co and JBS for the foresight to organise this prestigious and industry relevant event. Presentation at the Brisbane Ekka in August 2018

Palgrove Stud: The Palgrove stud is based near Warwick QLD, with the majority of the female herd running on our Ben Lomond and Dalveen properties. Bull depots are located at our Emerald and Drillham properties. For over 47 years, we ve adapted our Charolais genetics through a commitment to research, education, new technologies and a common sense cattleman s eye to suit clients environmental and management conditions. We ve grown the stud to a size where it ranks as the largest Charolais stud in Australia and by all accounts, the second largest in the world. In 2009, we started developing our Ultrablack bull breeding program. We re positive that they offer another profitable option to our clients production and target markets. Our Ultrablack female herd is now around 700 breeders and we are still selectively growing our numbers to ultimately reach 1,000 cows. The Sale Bulls: Our policy has always been to prepare our sale bulls on pasture and oats, so that they remain structurally and reproductively sound. This means that the sale weight of our bulls may be slightly less than bulls at other sales that have been fully prepared on a high grain ration. A bull s career begins rather than ends on sale day - so be cautious about comparing bull weights and fat scans between the various sales. Comparison of bulls in a contemporary group is a far more reliable indicator. It is in your best interests to purchase bulls that have had a moderate long term feed ration rather than one that has been pumped up for sale day. Our Approach: Even though the scale of the registered herd has increased substantially since we took over the stud in 1990, our breeding objectives haven t waivered. We aim to be the leaders in genetic improvement and customer satisfaction. Palgrove buyers expect the best from our cattle - whether it s a one stud sire or a draft of 100 commercial bulls. Our job is to deliver the cattle and the service that is beyond our clients expectations. New Generation Genetics: Since the early beginnings of the Palgrove stud, we have been using raw data and Breedplan information to measure the genetic improvement in our cattle in terms of the three main beef industry profit drivers. a) Fertility b) Growth and Weight Gain c) Carcass Merit It has been a systematic and carefully designed selection process over time with Palgrove producing the largest and most comprehensive Charolais EBV data in the country. Our commercial clients need genetics that are versatile enough to target a wide range of markets. Progeny need good growth combined with the right maturity pattern and an ability to adapt to difficult environmental conditions to finish easily off available nutrition.

5 PERFORMANCE INFORMATION In this sale, there are two separate BREEDPLAN figures presented: a) Charolais Group Breedplan b) Angus MBR Breedplan Each breed runs a separate BREEDPLAN evaluation. As the genetic base for each breed is different, only EBVs for animals within a particular breed can be directly compared. Putting this in practical terms, a 600 day weight EBV of +41 on an Ultrablack bull is not equivalent to a 600 day weight EBV of +41 on a Charolais bull. Our Ultrablack bull EBVs are provided to us as registered animals on the Angus Multi Breed Register (MBR). Only pure Angus cattle are recorded on HBR/APR registers. We have not included the $Indices on our Ultrablack bulls as they are only relevant for purebred Angus genetic comparisons. Perhaps we may even live long enough to see breed societies produce one single Breedplan report for all breeds. When assessing cattle performance it is essential to always compare apples with apples. Therefore, we suggest you use the Angus Society EBV information provided in this catalogue to assess the Ultrablack bulls as a contemporary group only (ie. compare Palgrove bull to Palgrove bull within this sale). We set out to achieve this without compromising the Palgrove growth and carcass traits that have been bred into our herd over many years. First and foremost the profit traits should decide breeding selections. There has been a push to promote cattle that are homozygous polled as superior to other polled cattle. Be careful when making bull selections on this single description and remember that homozygous polled is not a performance trait! Whilst it s tempting to blanket join our females to homozygous polled bulls, we ve taken the long road to polling our herd in order to maintain the integrity of our breeding principles. This means that the Palgrove key profit traits of fertility; weight gain; carcase and temperament are not compromised in our genetics. We thank you for your patience - the results will be a better polled product for you, as we hope you will see in this year s bull draft.

51 ULTRABLACK BULLS LOTS We ve been breeding Angus bulls since 1989 and in 2009 began breeding Ultrablack in response to client requests for a suitable third breed to use over replacement females in a Charolais X breeding programme. We knew that our clients needed clean sheaths; sleek coats; growth and carcase quality, so we focused our genetic design on these when selecting for both phenotype and objective data. We have been careful to select predictable Brangus and Angus breeding sires from commercially focused herds with high accuracy Breedplan data. Performance data: We see the most sustainable genetic gain being achieved by using practical, commonsense physical selection alongside objective performance data to ensure the best bulls are produced for the next generation. Our Ultrablack bull EBVs are provided to us as registered animals on the Angus Multi Breed Register (MBR). Only pure Angus cattle are recorded on HBR/ APR registers. When assessing cattle performance it is essential to always compare apples with apples. Therefore, we suggest you use the MBR Angus EBV PALGROVE ULTRABLACK: information provided in this catalogue to assess the Ultrablack bulls as a contemporary group only (ie. compare bull to bull within this sale). Note: If required, any of our bulls can be registered on the Brangus Society s Enrolment Register. Palgrove is fast becoming a leading supplier of Ultrablack genetics in Australia. We now sell over 300 bulls a year with production continuing to expand annually. Our Ultrablack breeding programme continues to develop, and we now have a larger percentage of generationally bred Ultrablacks (UB2 s). Reports from our clients have been overwhelmingly positive - the heifer progeny mature at an earlier age and fertility percentages have risen markedly. Also, the UB steers are weighing heavier earlier than our purebred Angus and we are able to sell them into the same markets, at the same rate And this... the Ultrablacks are outperforming any other tropical cross cattle we ve trialled at all points of our supply chain - weaners, background and feedlot weights as well as in the feedlot. PALGROVE - GENETRUST ALLIANCE Earlier this year, Palgrove announced the formation of a genetic alliance with GENETRUST, a large-scale USA based seedstock cattle company. GENETRUST is the leading supplier of Brangus and Ultrablack genetics in the US and is consistently ranked among the top 20 seedstock suppliers. The company markets over 700 bulls annually. They are the breed leader in registrations with the International Brangus Breeder s Association, and this influence continues worldwide as their semen and embryo sales have stretched throughout South America, Africa and Australia. We re excited about the potential of the new alliance, having identified Genetrust as producers with a shared breeding philosophy to Palgrove. We are both focused on producing phenotypically correct cattle that fit their environment maternally and structurally, while still maintaining the performance and carcase merit that the marketplace requires. The alliance will enable Palgrove first access to Genetrust genetics for exclusive use in their extensive stud and commercial herds. It will enable Palgrove to evaluate the suitability of the progeny for Australian conditions and markets. The result will be that Australian Brangus and Ultrablack breeders will have a direct evaluation of a sire s impact on breeding outcomes. Suitability of type and constitution can t be accurately evaluated by producers simply by looking at a photo or objective data in a semen catalogue. Through this alliance, we will to be able to provide verification of bulls and identify genetics that best fit conditions here in Australia. It will also provide a platform for performance data to be shared with Genetrust to enhance USA EPD weight and carcase information in the future.
