Violet Hills Charolais 8th Annual On Property Sale Lot 3: Violet Hills Magnificent (P) Sale Date: Thursday 3rd May 2018, 1pm

LOT 2: VIOLET HILLS MAURICE (P/S) All of us at Violet Hills extend a warm welcome and invitation to attend our 8th Annual on property sale. We are once again pleased to present a very good, even line, of young bulls of a unique type that we have been developing for years. All of the bulls have been drenched for liver fluke and worms on the 12/1/2018 as well as a 7:1 booster. They have also been vaccinated for pink eye, pestivirus and vibriosis. At Violet Hills we have paid particular attention to producing easy doing, easy care Charolais with excellent carcase characteristics. We have also put a strong emphasis on producing genuinely early maturing animals that can be finished at a young age, either on grass or in a feed lot. While most of our bulls go into crossbreeding operations they have performed equally well in pure bred herds. Our pure bred steers have performed with distinction in the Australian National Field Day steer and carcase trials over the years having been the winning teams in 2011 and 2015 and taking out the major awards for carcase quality and carcase yield most of the other years. LOT 4: VIOLET HILLS MAYNARD (P/S) Our clients have demonstrated that the premium for their Charolais sired calves will exceed $100 for weaner steers and $200 for yearling steers when compared to British Breed calves. With heifer calves the premium is even greater. Our Charolais herd of over 300 breeding cows is one of the most extensively recorded Charolais herds in Australia. While the majority of the cows are polled we have had to use some horned bulls like Flambeau, to maintain the quality and conformation that we require. We are slowly building a pool of home bred polled sires that we a happy with. This will enable us to move away from using horned bulls. Of course horned bulls are fine over polled breeds like Angus as all of the progeny will be polled. Both Sean and Daryl will be more than happy to answer any questions regarding the bulls. Our motto is We will not be beaten on quality Best Wishes, Daryl, Kaye, Sean and Kirsty Daryl: Sean: violethills@bigpond.com

SALE NOTES AuctionsPlus: Online bidding will be available through AuctionsPlus. Scanning and Weighing: All bulls will be scanned and weighed prior to the sale on the 17th of April so that the EBV s can be updated. A supplementary sheet will be available when that occurs. Health: Violet Hills is a jbas 7 accredited property and all bulls have been properly vaccinated for clostridium diseases, leptosporosis, vibriosis, pestivirus and pink eye. All have been drenched for fluke and worms. At Violet Hills it is our policy to NOT trim hooves. Any animal that exhibits problems with their hoof structure is culled. This includes all cows as well as the bulls. All bulls are available for inspection prior to the sale (by appointment) as well as the morning of the sale from 10am. Breeding Guarantee: All bulls are guaranteed breeders. Any claim against the breeding ability of a purchased animal should be made in writing, within 6 months, and accompanied by a veterinary certificate stating that the bull is infertile or incapable of natural service, and that, in his/her opinion, the bull has not suffered any injury or maltreatment, which could have affected its breeding ability, since delivery to the purchaser. Any animal failing to breed may be either replaced with a similar animal or have the purchase price refunded on the return of the animal to Violet Hills. This guarantee does not include interest, expenses, costs or damages this process may involve. All costs incurred for this process, will be at the purchaser s expense. This guarantee does not include problems caused by accident, disease or management after the fall of the hammer. Foot Guarantee: Having a good hoof structure is important for the working life of the bull. We are very conscious of this and cull any animal that has foot abnormalities that may be of genetic origin. We do not trim feet or offer bulls for sale that we feel may have a foot problem. Many things, such as injury, disease, nutrition to name a few, can cause hoof abnormalities during the life of the bull. Our foot guarantee is for the first 12 months after the purchase of the bull. We will credit the purchase price of the bull, minus the salvage value of the bull, on receipt of a veterinary certificate that certifies that the bull is INCAPABLE of natural service and this is not the result of injury, disease or mismanagement. This guarantee only applies to the actual state of the animal s hooves in the first 12 months after purchase. All costs associated with any claim against the bull are to be borne by the purchaser. Inspection: We encourage prospective buyers to inspect the cattle prior to the sale. This enables us to give a more personalised response to any questions. The animals will be available for inspection from 10am on sale day. Buyer Registration: All prospective buyers please register before the auction as a card system will be used. All care of the stock will be taken during holding but no responsibility will be accepted for injury or loss during this period. Ownership of the stock will pass to the successful purchaser on the fall of the hammer. A representative of Elders will be present to insure the cattle. Violet Hills may be able to assist with delivery of the bulls and a freight subsidy may apply. Please make arrangements with either Daryl or Sean. If you wish for us to deliver the bull(s) we will do so at a capped fee of $ per head to NSW and VIC destinations. The delivery fee will be added to the account sales. All care and no responsibility will be taken while awaiting delivery and during delivery. Caring for your new bull: When taking your young bull home, it is a good idea to have a welcoming group of cows or steers to help him settle into his new environment. His preparation will enable him to go to work as soon as needed. As he is still growing he should be kept on good quality feed, before, during and after being with your cows. We strongly advise against running your new bull with older bulls during joining. Your young bull will run the risk of being injured. He will also get very few calves as he will be dominated by the older bulls. PLEASE NOTE: It is unethical for anyone to promote, advertise or arrange the sale of any cattle, other than those in the sale, on the sale premises. IMPORTANT NOTICES: While all care is taken in compiling the catalogue, the vendors give no guarantee to the accuracy of the information contained in it. All persons who attend the sale do so entirely at their own risk and the Selling Agent, its members, subsidiary or related corporations, officers, agents, employees and its principals for themselves and for those for whom they act, do not assume or accept any responsibility or liability of whatever nature for any injury or damage whatsoever which may occur. Bring gumboots, a jumper and coat. The sale ring is undercover, however the cattle are in the open and the weather can be unpredictable.

Charolais BREEDPLAN Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) EBVs are aimed at putting value on certain traits. These values can be compared with the breed average value for that trait for those recorded animals that have been born in the same year. An accuracy figure gives the percentage chance that these allocated values will be achieved. For young animals with limited recordings there can be very big changes in their EBVs as more measurements are made as they get older. In our opinion, EBVs can give an indication of how they compare to their mates in the same herd. Caution should be used when comparing animals in different herds unless the accuracy of the figures is above 80%. Charolais Breed Average EBVs for 2016 Born Calves CE Dir CE Dtrs GL BW 200D 400D 600D MCW EBV Milk SS Carc Wt EMA Rib Rump RBY IMF EBV $24 +$32 +$18 Australian Charolais Selection Indexes There are three standard selection indexes calculated for Australian Charolais animals. All are expressed in $ per progeny returns, to the producer, when that animal is used. These are: 1. Domestic Index (Dom) 2. Export Index (Exp) 3. Northern Terminal Index (N Term) Each selection index has been developed for a different production/market scenario 1. Domestic Index Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd with a British cow base (e.g. Angus) targeting grass finished production for the domestic trade. This Index assumes pasture grown & finished steers weighing 430 kg (240 kg HSCW and 6 mm P8 fat depth) at 12 months. Daughters are retained or sold for breeding therefore maternal traits are of importance. In response to industry feedback positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability.

Charolais BREEDPLAN 2. Export Index Estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd with a British cow base (e.g. Angus) targeting the production of steers for export markets. This Index assumes pasture grown & finished steers weighing 700 kg (380 kg HSCW and 9 mm P8 fat depth) at 29 months. Daughters are retained or sold for breeding therefore maternal traits are of importance. In response to industry feedback a positive emphasis has been placed on finishing ability. 3. Northern Terminal Index This index is probably of little interest for producers in the southern states. At Violet Hills we have achieved continued improvement in both indexes and for a number of years have exceeded the Charolais breed average for both the Domestic and Export Indexes. Special emphasis continues to be placed on calving ease and the ability to finish at a young age. Please Note:- Very little data has been submitted for the 2017 drop of calves.

Australian National Field Days (Orange) Steer and Carcase competition results Violet Hills entered two teams of purebred Charolais steers in the Australian National Field Days Steer and Carcase competition We had two different sire groups. Both teams were from the bottom end of the pure bred calves out of first calf heifers. This resulted in lower carcase weight and only average performance on grain. When the steers were slaughtered the results were very pleasing. 1st and 2nd for dressing percentage 1st and 3rd for MSA eating quality 2nd and 4th for saleable meat yield 2nd and 3rd for carcase quality One team came 3rd overall in the competition. Purebred steer that was Reserve Champion on the hoof This clearly demonstrates to us that we are producing the type of Charolais that performs very well as a purebred and does not need to be crossed with British breeds to meet industry requirements.
