Talking Turkey The Pitt County Wildlife Club Newsletter September Welcome to the September edition of Talking Turkey. Please take a moment to read our newsletter and stay informed of the various events and opportunities awaiting you at the club this month. Membership Meeting 7:00 PM, Thursday, September 21 The September General Membership Meeting will be held at the clubhouse. Dinner will be served at 7:00 PM and will feature chicken in one of its many wondrous carnations with all the usual sides. Presentation to be announced before the meeting. Field Notes...From Club President, Lee Grubb Hello for my last set of field notes as President. I want to than you all for the support and sacrifices we have made as individuals and as a club. I am excited to transition back to a voting member on the board and I look forward to serving for another year as Past President. Looking back over the past two years I am quite happy to say that despite two significant floods, we have accomplished a great deal and the club is poised for continued success and improvements. Some of the highlights from the past two years include updating the Club's Standard Operating Procedures, engaging successfully in a financial review and a procedural audit which resulted in many different enhanced reporting and operational practices. We created a new position, Club Chief Range Safety Officer, and developed a Safety Committee to assist the Club CRSO in his duties. We survived the floods and grew together as we rebuilt the club. We have resurrected our scholarship program and have awarded a scholarship to a coastal environment doctoral student that not only helps fulfill our mission of conservation and conservation education, it will serve to help other researchers in the future as they investigate similar issues with different species. Finally, we have continued to help make our community a better safer place. We have continued to educate ladies, hunters and youth through our different instructional activities. We have continued to support the ECU ROTC by having them participate in various educational activities and most recently, We have adopted the boat ramp adjacent to our property and have agreed to help keep it clean. Make no mistake, we are active and we have made our little section of Pitt County a nicer place. Although the entire Board should be congratulated and thanked for their hard work and dedication to the club, we would like to now highlight three members who are coming off the Board after several years of service. Rick Brixon and Bill Wagonner have served the club on and off the Board, and as officers of the Board for over 15 years. Because of their exceptional dedication to the club for over 15 years, the Board recently voted to award them Lifetime Member Status. A third member, Rick Dean, is now rotating off the Board having served the club for just over 10 years. He has served as both a proud and passionate Board member and as the Match Director for the USPSA matches. Thank you Rick, Rick and Bill and thank you to those who continue to serve. My best to you all, Lee Grubb. 1
Work Day Work Day is scheduled for Saturday, September 16, 8:00 AM. Activities will include continued painting of covered firing lines, and other buildings as directed, changing backer boards, picking up trash, emptying garbage cans, etc. This month, we add clean up of the boat ramp adjoin the PCWC. This month s workday coordinator will be Bill Waggoner. 2 Board of Director Elections Our annual elections were held at the September Membership Meeting. President: Joe McMillan Vice President: Mimi Fulk Secretary: Kim Tavasso Treasurer: Mindy Waugh Director: (3 yr.) Tom Horner, Dan Martin Ladies Day Our fall Ladies Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 7. Registration begins at 8 AM. Safety briefing at 9 AM. We have a church group of 75 ladies already registered; therefore, there is a potential for a large crowd. There are other opportunities as well ranging from greeting and registration to walking around and making our guests welcome. If you are a lady interested in volunteering and feel comfortable instructing on one of our ranges, please contact me. Our ladies always appreciate instruction from another lady. Please contact Mimi Fulk if you are interested in volunteering. micky.fulk@yahoo.com or text Join us in giving back to our community and helping ladies of all ages enjoy shooting! Annual Friends of the NRA Banquet The annual Friends of the NRA banquet will be held on Thursday, September 28 beginning at 6 pm at Rock Springs Center. This annual event helps raise money to support local youth and ladies shooting teams. Many of our area shooting teams submit and are awarded grants through this foundation. Tickets are $40 for an individual or $70 for a couple. Please see Fred Farrell or Mimi Fulk ( ) to purchase tickets. We also have sponsorship and underwriting opportunities if you have a local business and would like to support through your business. 3-Gun Match at PCWC: The 3-Gun Match at the club has been suspended indefinitely for want of a Match Director. Since many members cannot afford the cost of travel and classes at Gunsite, Thunder Ranch or Blackwater, we would like to offer one in-house for a nominal fee, as a service to our members. The class will be taught by Pitt County Sheriff's Office retired Captain Brady Davis and our own member, Jim Marsal. Both firearms instructors have numerous years of experience, teaching thousands of officers life-saving handgun skills. The class will cover the following topics and more: safety, ccw issues, draw/re-holstering, combat triad and winning mindset, gun handling, modifications, holster selection, reloading, shooting from cover, marksmanship fundamentals, shooting from various positions, shooting on the move, maintenance, non- 2

This course is designed to take your skill set to the next level of performance and increase your confidence in your defensive shooting. This is not a beginners course, nor is it a USPSA improvement class. Members will need the following: a reliable defensive handgun (9mm/38 Special, or larger), 1,000 rounds of quality ammunition, 5 magazines or speed loaders, heavy belt, magazine carriers, appropriate clothing for weather, cleaning gear, eye/ear protection, billed hat and an open mind. Any questions on the class or suitable gear, please call or Jim Marsal at marsal2424@hotmail.com, Cost of the class will be $ Class size is limited to the first 20, paid members. Defensive Carbine Class On October 9-11 (Mon-Wed), 2017, Brady Davis and Jim Marsal will conduct a Defensive Carbine Class for club members. The class will cover the proper use, operation, maintenance, ballistics of the 5.56mm/300 AAC cartridges, zeroing, set-ups, for the AR15 rifle. Students will learn how to effectively use the AR15 rifle in a defensive situation, as well as transition to their handgun. Interested members will need the following: a reliable AR15 rifle, proper sling that easily allows transitions to the pistol, reliable pistol with holster, (5) magazines for each, 1,000 rounds of rifle and 250 rounds of pistol ammunition, with an open mind. This class will require students to be able to control and hold a rifle up, shoot, move, get into and out of various positions such as prone and kneeling, as well as be able to stand for long periods of time. This is an active class and members will need to be in physical shape to complete it. Though this training will help, it's not a USPSA/Multi-Gun improvement course. Due to the limited time available, members must have already completed one our Defensive Pistol Classes, or the equivalent pistol class at Gunsite, Thunder Ranch or Blackwater. Class space is limited to the first 20 members that pay the $ tuition. Please contact Jim Marsal at marsal2424@hotmail.com or , for registration, payment and for any questions on the specific training, equipment, or listed requirements. Checks should be made out to Jim Marsal and mailed to: Jim Marsal, 1897 Manor Court Greenville, N.C Write "3-Day Carbine Class" on the memo line. PCWC CONCEALED CARRY FORMAT SHOOT Concealed Carry Shoot will be Saturday, September 16, at 1:00 PM. This will be a shooting event for members only (and their guests), and is designed to be enjoyable for shooters of all skill levels. Participation in the concealed carry shoot requires use of handguns, holsters, and other equipment suitable for concealed carry/selfdefense. With that in mind, equipment is based on commonly available firearms and gear. This will allow individuals the opportunity to shoot with minimal expenditure, and get some time with equipment that they have chosen for defense of themselves and loved ones. Price: $10 (members), $15 (guests) For more information contact Bill Young at (252) Special Instruction for Beginning or New Shooters On the first Sunday of each month, beginning at 2:00 PM, special instruction for new shooters will be offered at the club. Bring your bagged, unloaded handgun to Range 4; if you do not have a handgun don't worry, we will furnish firearms. Please call Rick Brixon at (252) if you plan to attend. This is a free service open to 3 3
the public. Please bring factory ammunition for whatever caliber firearm you are bringing or are interested in shooting. Usually we provide handguns chambered in.22lr,.380, 38 special, 9mm, and 45acp. Handguns provided include a mix of revolvers and semi automatic pistols. NRA Certified Range Officers and Pistol Instructors will be on hand to assist at all levels. A great opportunity to improve your handgun techniques! 4 PCWC on Facebook PCWC has a MEMBER ONLY Facebook page. It can be found by going to Facebook and searching "PITT COUNTY WILDLIFE CLUB-MEMBERS FORUM". This is another place to stay in touch with the club, current events and events that are coming up. It was set up just for current members to share their own pictures and experiences and the club. Check it out if you are a Facebooker. If you have questions please contact Louis Weaver ( ), Staci Rubio or Justin Smith. Club Ammo Sale The Pitt County Wildlife Club has acquired more surplus ammo through the Civilian Marksmanship Program. This ammo will be sold at our club membership meetings. This ammo is Greek Military surplus. It is boxer primed, non-corrosive, and brass cased. M2 ball surplus. There are mixed dates on the cans. Cans are approximately 200 rounds each, usually a couple over. Price is $130 per can. For information and sales, contact Lenn Norment, (252) Safety First River Path Please note that the river path may only be used (1) from sunrise until 12:30 PM on Sunday; (2) any day after sundown; (3) during workday hours; (4) at events when the ranges are closed, such as archery. Members are not allowed to be on the river path when the ranges are open for use. This is a major safety violation. If you have any questions, please refer to your Range SOPs. Also, please remember that vehicles are not allowed on the ranges unless they are being used for club maintenance or to set up or take down match or event related materials. Please remember, it is the responsibility of all club members to report egregious safety violations when they witness them by notifying the club President Lee Grubb, any Board Member, Chief Range Safety Officer, or Range safety Officer. Special Reminder Membership and Guest Badges Please make sure that you and your guests prominently display membership and guest badges at all times when you are on the club grounds. The badges are needed to help us identify members and guests alike to ensure that all persons on the club grounds are members or guests. In addition, if you bring a guest to the club, please make sure you both complete the liability waiver form located in the box on Range 7 when signing in your guest(s). Range Attention Needed Recently, we have noticed a significant increase in the amount of spent center fire shell casings left on the ranges. This seems to be a problem on the new ranges as well as the old ranges. Please make sure that you clean up after yourself. Leaving the spent shell casings is a safety hazard and a violation of the Club SOPs. We have also seen an increase in the number of unfired rounds left on the ranges. We all need to make sure that we leave the range in a clean and safe condition for other members to enjoy. I presume that the overwhelming majority of you do clean up after yourself and we all appreciate your efforts. If you notice people not cleaning up, please remind them in a friendly and professional way. The range we clean up is after all, our own range. People should be reminded that the shooting of cans or plastic bottles is allowed ONLY ON RANGE 6. 4
First Aid Boxes All members should have keys to the first aid boxes on the ranges. We ask that you check your key copy to make sure that it does in fact open the padlock. Checking the padlock on one range should suffice. If your key does not work the lock, contact Rick Brixon (252) , or Also be reminded that AED boxes are on Range 6 and inside the clubhouse. Standard Operating Procedures: A Reminder Please remember that eye and ear protection must be worn at all times on the ranges when firearms are in use. Please remember that firearms, magazines, or ammo cannot be handled when others are downrange. Do not affix or prop up any type of target to the vertical backer board posts. The posts may not be used to hold up any type of target, paper or steel. 5 Calendar of Events New Shooters Clinic Sunday, September 3, 2 PM, Range 4. Board Meeting Thursday, September 7, 7:00 PM.
