1 Talking Turkey The Pitt County Wildlife Club Newsletter September Welcome to the September edition of Talking Turkey. Please take a moment to read our newsletter and stay informed of the various events and opportunities awaiting you at the club this month. Membership Meeting 7:00 PM, Thursday, September 15 The September General Membership Meeting Dinner will be tenderloin, mashed potatoes, green beans, and banana pudding, served at 7:00 PM. A presentation on the effect of coyote on deer and turkey populations by Chris Kent will follow. Field Notes...From Club President, Lee Grubb The end is near!!! The end of sweltering heat and humidity that is... With fall fast approaching that is a signal that we have two huge events right around the corner. We have both Ladies Day and Youth Day in October and these are two of the club's signature events. We need all of the volunteers we can get so please mark your calendar and be there to help educate members of our local community and introduce them safely into the shooting sports, world of hunting and wildlife conservation and management. On a different note, I wanted to send out a special thanks to Lenn Norment. Lenn has been a member of the club for over 15 years and in addition to his duties as the Match Director for the Garand Matches, he has served on the Board for the last six years. I am, and we all should be, thankful for his service to the club. Again, please come out and support your club and the community with Ladies Day and Youth Day. As always, volunteers will come away with a smile and a volunteer voucher for $25 off their annual dues. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at grubb3g@gmail.com or at (252) Board of Directors Election Results President: Lee Grubb Vice President: Joe McMillan Secretary: Treasurer: Dan Martin Rick Brixon One 2017 Director (One-Year Term) David Rushing Two (2) 2019 Directors (Three-Year Term) Woody Andrews, Louis Weaver 1
2 2 Work Day Work Day is scheduled for Saturday, September 17, 8:00 AM. Activities will include cleaning the club house; regular work around the property; replacing backer boards; general grounds cleanup, and roadway trash pickup. This month s workday coordinator will be Bill Waggoner. If you have a weed-eater, bring it! Ladies Day Our fall Ladies Day is Saturday, October 1. Safety briefing will begin at 9 am. If you are a lady interested in shooting, the registration form is online. If you are a lady, please consider a role on the shooting line. Some of our lady participants are more comfortable with a lady teaching them. You do not have to be an expert, just comfortable with shooting and know and practice safe shooting techniques. If you think you may be interested in being on the firing line, I can work with you ahead of time in getting you comfortable with what you will be using that day. There are also needs not on the firing line. We need men and women who can greet, check people in, help park vehicles, help serve food, help set up and clean up. Please consider volunteering with us on this day of community outreach. The more hands we have, the easier the work. If you have any questions or want to volunteer, contact Mimi Fulk at or her at micky.fulk@yahoo.com. Youth Day It's that time of year again. We will soon have the opportunity to introduce our local youth to the exciting world of safe firearms use and answer any questions they have about hunting and wildlife management and conservation. The date is set for the work day in October on the 15 th with participant sign in starting at 12:30 PM. Members may contact you to come assist with specific activities but even if you are not contacted, we need your help. Please send me (Lee Grubb) an at grubb3g@gmail.com or call me at (252) to volunteer. In addition, at the end of the newsletter is a flyer with information about Youth Day. Please share this with friends and family to ensure we have a successful Youth Day. Hunter Safety Classes A Hunter Safety Internet Field Day is scheduled for September 24th beginning at 6:00 PM. For additional information or to register, please contact Kim Tavasso at (252) Combat Pistol Training Class On September 26-28, 2016, between 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, the PCWC will host a Defensive Pistol Class for members only. Since many members cannot afford the cost of travel and classes at Gunsite, Thunder Ranch or Blackwater, we would like to offer one in-house for a nominal fee, as a service to our members. The class will be taught by Pitt County Sheriff's Office retired Captain Brady Davis and our own member, Jim Marsal. Both firearms instructors have numerous years of experience, teaching thousands of officers life-saving handgun skills. The class will cover the following topics and more: safety, ccw issues, draw/re-holstering, combat triad and winning mindset, gun handling, modifications, holster selection, reloading, shooting from cover, marksmanship fundamentals, shooting from various positions, shooting on the move, maintenance, non-standard response, turning, ballistic testing and discussion. Obviously, members will need to be in physical shape good enough to stand for long periods of time, move from prone to kneeling to standing, as well as have basic gun handling skills prior to the class. This course is designed to take your skill set to the next level of performance and increase your confidence in your defensive shooting. This is not a beginners course, nor is it a USPSA improvement class. Members will 2
3 need the following: a reliable defensive handgun (9mm/38 Special, or larger), 1,000 rounds of quality ammunition, 5 magazines or speed loaders, heavy belt, magazine carriers, appropriate clothing for weather, cleaning gear, eye/ear protection, billed hat and an open mind. Any questions on the class or suitable gear, please call or Jim Marsal at marsal2424@hotmail.com, Cost of the class will be $ Class space is limited to the first 20 members that pay the $ tuition. Please contact Jim Marsal at marsal2424@hotmail.com or , for registration, payment and for any questions on the specific training, equipment, or listed requirements. Send your payment/checks, made out to Jim Marsal, to 1897 Manor Court, Greenville, N.C Defensive Carbine Class On October 24-26, 2016, Brady Davis and Jim Marsal will conduct a Defensive Carbine Class for club members. The class will cover the proper use, operation, maintenance, ballistics of the 5.56mm/300 AAC cartridges, zeroing, set-ups, for the AR15 rifle. Students will learn how to effectively use the AR15 rifle in a defensive situation, as well as transition to their handgun. Interested members will need the following: a reliable AR15 rifle, proper sling that easily allows transitions to the pistol, reliable pistol with holster, (5) magazines for each, 1,000 rounds of rifle and 250 rounds of pistol ammunition, with an open mind. This class will require students to be able to control and hold a rifle up, shoot, move, get into and out of various positions such as prone and kneeling, as well as be able to stand for long periods of time. This is an active class and members will need to be in the physical shape to complete it. Though this training will help, it's not a USPSA/Multi-Gun improvement course. Due to the limited time available, members must have already completed one our Defensive Pistol Classes, or the equivalent pistol class at Gunsite, Thunder Ranch or Blackwater. Class space is limited to the first 20 members that pay the $ tuition. Please contact Jim Marsal at marsal2424@hotmail.com or , for registration, payment and for any questions on the specific training, equipment, or listed requirements. Send your payment/checks, made out to Jim Marsal, to 1897 Manor Court, Greenville, N.C NRA Banquet The Friends of the NRA Banquet is being held on September 22nd beginning at 6:00 PM in the Rock Springs Center on Hwy. 43 N. Hope you are interested in participating. If so, please contact Fred Farrell (252) , Bill Young (252) or Kim Tavasso (252) Tickets are $40 for an individual, $70 per couple and $25 for Youth (18 years & under). Club Ammo Sale The Pitt County Wildlife Club has acquired more surplus ammo through the Civilian Marksmanship Program. This ammo will be sold at our club membership meeting on Thursday, September 15. This ammo is Greek military surplus. It is boxer primed, non-corrosive, and brass cased M2 ball surplus. There are mixed dates on the cans. Cans are approximately 200 rounds each, usually a couple over. Price is $130 per can. Sales will only be to PCWC club members. Special Instruction for Beginning or New Shooters On the first Sunday of each month, beginning at 2:00 PM, special instruction for new shooters will be offered at the club. Bring your bagged, unloaded handgun to Range 4; if you do not have a handgun don't worry, we will furnish firearms. Please call Rick Brixon at (252) if you plan to attend. This is a free service open to 3
4 the public. Please bring factory ammunition for whatever caliber firearm you are bringing or are interested in shooting. Usually we provide handguns chambered in.22lr,.380, 38 special, 9mm, and 45acp. Handguns provided include a mix of revolvers and semi automatic pistols. NRA Certified Range Officers and Pistol Instructors will be on hand to assist at all levels. A great opportunity to improve your handgun techniques! 4 Safety First At PCWC, we allow members to carry concealed and open carry firearms while at the club. Along with this privilege comes personal responsibility. Loaded handguns should only be unholstered or handled at the firing line. Unloaded handguns may be unholstered, holstered, or handled at either a firing line or one of the four (4) marked Safety Areas on the club grounds. Do not handle unholstered handguns at your personal vehicle. No handling of ammunition (including snap-caps) is allowed in the designated Safety Areas. Please remember, it is the responsibility of all club members to report egregious safety violations when they witness them by notifying the club President Lee Grubb, any Board Member, Chief Range Safety Officer, or Range safety Officer. Special Reminder Membership and Guest Badges Please make sure that you and your guests prominently display membership and guest badges at all times when you are on the club grounds. The badges are needed to help us identify members and guests alike to ensure that all persons on the club grounds are members or guests. In addition, if you bring a guest to the club, please make sure you both complete the liability waiver form located in the box on Range 7 when signing in your guest(s). A Clean Range is a Happy Range Properly dispose of all trash. Please do not fill the trashcans with large items such as cardboard targets, boxes, large plastic containers, etc., and do not put cardboard targets under the trashcans. If the trashcans are full or if you have generated a large amount of trash, please make a trip to our red dumpster located in the main parking lot. Please remember to police up all centerfire brass even if it is steel or aluminum case. Keeping our ranges/grounds clean and litter free is the responsibility of every member and guest. Parking on New Ranges 1, 2 & 3 The new ranges are open for parking. Members are requested to park as close to the berm as possible to ensure that emergency vehicles will have access in case of an emergency. To facilitate this, members are asked to park with the pasenger s side door facing the rear berm. This will entail driving down to the end of Range One, doing a three-point turn, and then parking facing Range Four. We thank you for your cooperation in this. First Aid Boxes All members should have keys to the first aid boxes on the ranges. We ask that you check your key copy to make sure that it does in fact open the padlock. Checking the padlock on one range should suffice. If your key does not work the lock, contact Rick Brixon (252) , or rbrixon@yahoo.com. Also be reminded that AED boxes are on Range 6 and inside the clubhouse. Standard Operating Procedures for Range Usage and Match Set-up Times Members, please be aware that match directors need access to the following ranges for set up for the following club-sponsored matches on the following days at the following times; do your best to accommodate them and the job they have to do, as they do their best to accommodate you. 4
