4 Letters of Introduction Dear NAEBA members, Welcome to Kansas City and NAEBA s 24th convention! It is great to see the renewed faith in our industry and our members finally rewarded for the years of dedication and strong markets currently for our products. I believe that our industry will continue to have many great years ahead of us. This weekend will be filled with an aggressive schedule of informational seminars, great auctions and entertainment. Our NAEBA staff and convention committee have spent many hours on your convention and have yet again done an outstanding job of organizing our annual event that continues to become better and better each year. Take time this weekend to attend the NAEBA board meetings or talk to your regional board representatives or NAEBA staff with your thoughts and input on our organization. As a board, we welcome your input and suggestions. I personally want to thank each and every member that has taken the time to attend, sponsor and/or donate to NAEBA s cause. Without you, none of this is possible. Kim Kafka, President North American Elk Breeders Association Dear NAEBA Members, Welcome to Missouri. You are in the most centrally located city in the country. Missouri Elk Farmers Association is happy to have North American Elk Breeders Association hold its conference here in Kansas City. One of our Founding Fathers, of both MEFA and NAEBA was Rush Johnson, who lived near Bucklin, MO. Bucklin is just a little wide place in the road. Some of you may remember Rush. He worked hard to get both organizations going so we need to continue to work together to keep the industry alive and growing. In 1995 several of the MEFA members got together and got the bill passed and signed by the Governor to classify Elk as farm livestock so we fall under the Missouri Department of Agriculture. This has been a great help to us in the industry. It is my suggestion that you join and support your state organization, if you are not already a member. There is strength in numbers and we need all the strength we can get. As all of you know we have some rough roads ahead combatting all the false information that is being published regarding the elk industry, as well as the deer industry. Please try to take the time to enjoy some of the interesting and fun things to do while you are in town. We have the Historic City Market, Country Club Plaza, American Royal Museum as just a few points of interest. Then, for those who want to enjoy the really fun things, we have Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun amusement and water parks. These are just a few of the interesting things to do in Kansas City, MO. Once again, welcome to our fine state and we hope you enjoy your stay and have a safe return home. Joyce LaRue, President Missouri Elk Farmers Association NAEBA Annual Convention and International Antler Competition

7 Thursday, July 31st Seminar Descriptions State & National Leaders Workshop Open to all attendees with special emphasis towards state and national leaders. NAEBA staff members Travis Lowe and Laurie Seale will lead the group to examine successful models and approaches practiced to increase communications and membership outreach. Executive Director Travis Lowe, a lobbyist in Kansas, will give helpful tips for ways associations can build their political influence with key legislative leaders. Fundraising Coordinator Laurie Seale will share fundraising ideas that have been successful in other agriculture associations. Best Practices of Velvet Cutting Antler competition chair Eric Mohlman and senior velvet judge Lance Hartkopf will lead discussion about velvet cutting best time to cut and utilizing best management practices to ensure humane treatment of bulls during velveting. Hard Antler Scoring School One of the most important skills for producers to acquire is to be able to score antler sets accurately for selling bulls to preserves as well as to evaluate overall bull performance. Learn from the best! Tom Watts is NAEBA s senior hard antler judge and an official scorer for Safari Club International. Whether you re new or experienced in scoring antler, this is a great way to build and/or brush up on your scoring skills. Friday, August 1st NAEBA Registration & DNA 101 As breeding stock sales continue to grow and more bulls are moving through the thriving trophy bull market, many producers have found they are behind on their registrations and purity needed to move their animals. Tena Martin from NAEBA s Registration Office along with Registration Chair Brian Wagner will be on hand to help explain different registration scenarios, explain how to properly fill out paperwork forms and answer your registration and DNA questions. Improving Animal Photos & Visual Marketing One of the most important aspects of marketing your farm are great visual photos a picture is worth a thousand words! In this age of social media, good quality photos are more important than ever as pictures are the most successful way to capture the attention of the viewer. Wildlife photographer Lance Krueger will share his tips for taking the great photos that will convey the message you want to share. Promoting Your Farm/Ranch Online Online marketing and free social media are two exceptional aspects of creating a successful marketing plan for your farm/ranch. NAEBA webmaster Brian Tesene will share tips and examples of successful online marketing campaigns and will explain how to utilize the benefits of adding social media to our marketing strategies. Update on CWD Live Research There is much research being done in the way of developing a live animal CWD test for farmed and wild cervids. Last year, NAEBA introduced attendees to CWD vaccine research as a way to possibly prevent CWD from occurring. This year, two researchers will be on hand to share additional studies which are currently underway. Dr. Nicholas Haley of Kansas State University (KSU) will explain his work in CWD rectal and nasal swab testing and Dr. Candace Mathiason of Colorado State University (CSU) will showcase her work on a CWD blood test. Both CSU and KSU are using the same technology (RT-QuIC) but are using different samples. Both studies are well underway and showing good potential. Importance of Industry/USAHA Alliance NAEBA has been an allied organization member of USAHA with a seat on the USAHA Board of Directors for many years. This relationship is extremely important as it sets the tone for all of our cervid health programs including Tuberculosis, Brucellosis, Chronic Wasting Disease and others. USAHA Executive Director Ben Richie will guide attendees through the process of how change is enacted through our relationship with USAHA. Saturday, August 2nd EHD Signs & Prevention No longer just considered a whitetail deer disease, EHD is spreading to elk and cattle at an alarming rate. Research has shown that controlling the midge population and preventing animal exposure to the midges are key in greatly minimizing chances of outbreak. Dr. Lee Cohnstaedt, a research entomologist with USDA, has conducted extensive research on EHD and travels the country educating associations and individually consulting with producers on how to help prevent EHD from affecting their herds. Chemical Immobilization Safety & Use Continuing improvements are being made in chemical immobilization of deer and elk regarding safety and ease of use. Whether you routinely immobilize your elk or only do so on occasion, it is important in any situation to use the safest and most efficient products available. NAEBA Goals at Upcoming USAHA Conference Every October, USAHA holds a conference for all the allied organizations and state and federal agriculture and wildlife agencies to sit down and discuss animal health issues. This conference is one of the most efficient ways to improve our regulations and build relationships with leaders of the animal health community. NAEBA s involvement is extremely important as USAHA members have an opportunity to suggest federal regulatory changes, which are given significant weight with USDA/ APHIS. This is your chance to offer input to NAEBA representatives as to what regulatory changes are most critical at the present time and to learn what thoughts they have in regards to the upcoming meeting NAEBA Annual Convention and International Antler Competition 5

15 2014 NAEBA Select Quality Elk Auction August 2, :30 p.m. Harrah s, Kansas City, Missouri This summer s animal auction features several lots consisting of young bulls and heifer calves, yearling heifers and trophy bulls. We appreciate each ranch that was willing to be involved in this year s auction. It will help market your ranch but also serves as a great way for people to see your genetics who otherwise would not have the chance. As elk breeders strive to build their herds to sustain the new demand, proven breeding stock will become much more valuable. By identifying proven production from what the mother and grandmother have produced, one can identify proven cow families of which to build around to make your herd the most successful. We all love raising elk but proven production will allow you to make the most return in the quickest amount of time no matter what style of antler you breed for - typical, non-typical or velvet.
