Howell April 13, 2016, was BGH s Annual Awards Meeting with 71 members and guest in attendance at the Home Site. Charlie Mateker and his crew served another Gourmet Dinner enjoyed by all. Sauder, Jr. Adam Wedel Leonard Wolter First was one of Big Game Hunters most prestigious Awards, Hunter of the Year. This Award may be presented annually to the, Big Game Hunter who has demonstrated a significant number of successful hunts. The selection is made by the previous winners and may be awarded to the same member only three times. The 2015 Hunter of the Year is Jim Mraz. To hear about Jim s hunt in Africa put September 14, 2016, on your calendar. The Hunter of the Year Presentation while be held at Spazio s. Congratulations Jim! Next plaques for the 2015 Big Buck Contest were awarded. The Big Game Hunters Club will award up to three places for the biggest bucks shot with rifle, muzzleloader, shotgun or bow. The buck must score at least 100 SCI gross to qualify and be killed in your state of residence. Rules are published in your BGH Roster and on our Web site. Following was Biggest Turkey with 1st, 2nd and 3rd for biggest and multiple beards. Be sure to contact Jim Mraz if you shoot a turkey in your home state. Maybe you ll be in the running for a plaque in Then certificates for the 2015 Target Shoot winners were awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd for the 8 events. There was also the 2015 Iron Man and the 2015 Rookie of the Year. The 1st Place winner s names and the year are added to the Traveling Trophies and Wall Plaques at the clubhouse. Finally Appreciation Plaques were given to Past-Presidents John Gibbs and Bob Adelsberger. Thanks gentlemen! Congratulations to all the winners! As you can probably guess everyone had a great time with applause, cheers, jeers and catcalls. What a Great Bunch! So it s that time of year when we start all over again with turkey season, the Annual Target Shoot and hunting trips where ever they may be. Good luck, be careful and much success. New Freshwater Drum Record REEDS SPRING, Mo. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reports that Joshua Cole of Reeds Spring became the most recent record-breaking fisherman in Missouri when he shot a freshwater drum on Table Rock Lake using a bow and arrow. The new alternative method record drum taken by Cole on March 31 weighed 30-pounds, 15-ounces. It was 33 inches long and had a girth of 30 inches. He shot the fish around 10 p.m. about one mile from Point 10 on Table Rock Lake. I can t believe I shot a state-record drum, Cole said. I knew I was shooting at a big drum, but I didn t realize how big it was until we got it in the boat. New White Bass Record STONE COUNTY, Mo. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reports James Wright of Cape Fair became the most recent record-setting angler in Missouri when he hooked a white bass on Table Rock Lake on a trotline. The new alternative method record white bass caught by Wright on April 6 weighed 3- pounds, 4-ounces with a length of 18 3/4 inches. Wright was using shad for bait to try to catch catfish, but instead he caught a state-record white bass. I was in my new boat baiting hooks on a trotline, and out of nowhere something hit the line hard, Wright said. I grabbed the line and yanked it, and then the fight was on. I finally got it in the boat after about three minutes and was totally shocked to see that it was a white bass. To pick it up call Brett Grimm at (314) ! MDC Helps Grow New Generation of Turkey Hunters! KIRKSVILLE, Mo. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) helped a new generation of turkey hunters discover the joys of the hunt over the weekend. A mentored hunt in northeast Missouri ensured plenty of opportunities for interested youth to learn from some of the state s leading turkey experts. In Kahoka, MDC turkey experts spent an evening helping young newcomers learn the basics of shooting safety, turkey calling, habitat and biology, and rules and regulations before heading out to hunt with guides in the morning. Eleven kids participated in the youth event for turkey season. Seven harvested birds, and all had a good time, said MDC Outdoor Skills Specialist Rob Garver. These clinics teach valuable skills to first-time turkey hunters, and help kids discover the joys of the hunt. Member Appreciation Raffle! Membership Appreciation Raffle WINNER; Congratulations, for simply showing up to the meeting, Jim Mraz, won the first Member Appreciation Raffle. He won a Ruger 10/22 and Browning Plainsman Rifle Gun Case! You can dispose of your white tickets for the first Raffle, as we are starting over. The Raffle was a success, and overwhelmingly those at the last meeting said, Do it Again! So, we are. We will be using the Orange Tickets (ENCLOSED) for the 2 nd Member Appreciation Raffle. 6 Record Setting MoNASP State Archery Tournament Record setting 1450 student archers competed at the MoNASP State Tournament JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. The eighth annual Missouri Archery in the Schools Program (MoNASP) state tournament drew 1,450 students in grades 4-12 from 94 schools across the state. Winning teams and individuals, along with other teams and individuals who had qualifying scores, will go on to compete in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) tournament in Louisville, Ky., on May MoNASP is coordinated through the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Conservation Federation of Missouri in partnership with more than 550 participating schools and numerous supporting organizations throughout the state, with more than 185,000 Missouri students in grades 4-12 through participation in the sport. The growth of the Missouri National Archery in the Schools Program has been tremendous over the past couple years, said MDC Education Outreach Coordinator Eric Edwards, who coordinates MoNASP. This surge has led students outdoors with their families to participate in this lifetime sport. Students get way more out of MoNASP then just lifelong skills that come with archery. It gives them confidence and helps them excel in the classroom. General Meetings The General Meeting is May 11th at Spazios and starts 6:30pm. We will have our Annual Financial Report and The presentation for that evening is from Larry Barbaglia of TenPoint Crossbows.
