Brendon Schmiesing was gonna go deer hunting today but one of his hunting buddies said he located about 300 ducks and a bunch of geese SO... they all went waterfowl hunting today. They got 25 ducks and 7 Canadian geese! I'm glad they have such a good bunch of guys that can hunt together. Werner Schmiesing Here's my grandson Connor Schmiesing with a Nick, Kevin, Chris, Brett, Joe, Mike, Lance, Adam & Mark nice rooster he just shot. Not bad for someone who just turned 11! He's having a good year. Werner Schmiesing Here's my grandson Connor Schmiesing with a trophy snook he caught in the Florida Everglades while vacationing with his family this summer. Werner Schmiesing

This is my youngest grandson Connor Schmiesing and a nice Corsican ram he shot at the DD Ranch last December. He was 10 years Old when he shot the ram. I just signed Connor up as a SCI member in Tucson and I am a SCI Life Member and member of the Central Ohio Chapter. Werner Schmiesing These are pictures of the Roe Deer harvested on the first Day. I will send some others that represent the other 4 days touring Serbia. This is an easy hunt and a great historical and religious experience. Greg Wehr

Brett Dormire shot this nice Pope and Young 8 point in Lancaster Ohio. This buck was chasing doe s on November 9th when he walked right under my stand it was only a 10 yrd shot. The buck ran 4 yrds and tipped over another great hunt in Ohio! Brett Dormire Chase Dormire and Vince Eichhorn with a limit of geese. The boys first outing this November they were able to harvest a limit of geese in the Plain City area in just under two hours. Both boys said it was the best hunt they have ever been on! Brett Dormire Make a donation to the Central Ohio Chapter of SCI. The Annual Sportsmen's banquet requires hundreds of items between the Live & Silent auctions, Gun and General Raffles. 9 "Two nights before the trip I found out that I was going hunting with my dad and I was really excited. I didn't know that we were going hunting but I probably should've expected it since my dad had me do a bunch of dry fire exercises with our hunting rifle to get used to using it. The night before we went hunting I had a dance class and rehearsal from 10:30-5pm; I was exhausted, but the drive was about a half hour. It was about 6:15 when we arrived at the lodge. I was amazed with everything that was there. The lodge had two large mounted bass, about a dozen deer mounts, a chair made of deer antlers and fur, a coyote mount, a life-size bear mount and a bear rug! By the time I saw all of the lodge I was starving. For dinner we had steak (cooked the way I like it, medium rare) and a vegetable casserole that was delicious. The morning of the hunt we got up at about 6am, got dressed in lots of layers, and went to look for deer. We didn't eat breakfast but missing a meal was worth it. I got my deer at about 12:15, right before lunch. When I first saw the deer I was kind of confused where I was going to shoot it since it was almost directly behind another deer and (This was my first deer, after all!). My first shot hit the top of its neck. We went looking for it and saw it not five minutes later. This time I got a pretty good shot. It was a little far back but it took the deer down. I would totally do this again! I hope for a little bit of a bigger buck, next time!" Thomas Lohrmann

Rina Hoge AWLS article for newsletter December 28, 2017 I wasn t even looking, honest! But there I sat after school one day, reading the latest issue of my National Science Teacher s Association (NSTA) periodical when a small ad jumped up off the page at me. I read it 3 times just to see if I was really reading what I thought I was reading. A wildlife conservation class? For educators around the country? In the Bridger-Teton Mountains? Near Jackson, Wyoming? Sounded too good to be true! But I had to check out the American Wilderness Leadership School for myself. The class was sponsored by a group I had never heard of - Safari Club International, SCI. I searched for and found the SCI website, which highlighted their many positive goals and programs. Wildlife conservation through responsible and ethical hunting plays a significant role in their mission statement, which is to fund and manage wildlife conservation programs around the world, and support outdoors education and humanitarian efforts. The group promotes an appreciation for nature and wildlife to strengthen conservation efforts globally, while actively protecting hunters rights. I am not a hunter, but I know many who are. And as an educator, many of my students and their families hunt. So my interest in this class was piqued. I felt this would be a fantastic opportunity as I m always looking for different ways to expand my perspective so that I may help my students expand theirs. I teach fifth grade Science and Language Arts at Big Walnut Intermediate School in Sunbury, Ohio. Many of my ten and eleven year old students are excited to get their first hunting licenses to hunt with adult family members. They hunt mainly to put food on the table. Some dedicated hunters donate their game to food banks through a program sponsored by Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife. Venison is their wild game of choice, although many hunt squirrel. Both are plentiful in our state. After learning through SCI Headquarters in Tucson I would need to find a local sponsor to attend the class, I discovered the Central Ohio Chapter of SCI. I made contact with Chris Fisher and well, the rest is history! My application was submitted, accepted, and travel plans began. SCI s educator program covers tuition and travel expenses to and from Jackson Hole, which is a major investment in providing professional development for educators from around the country. Upon arrival at Jackson Hole Airport, which sits at the foot of the Grand Tetons, I was met by one of the several AWLS faculty members. There were 30 educators in this particular class in mid June, the second of 7 10-day classes that would be held during the summer. From morning well into the night, the faculty and staff kept us quite busy learning all things hunting and conservation related. The goal was to provide us with the tools we need to use the outdoors as our classroom and incorporate conservation education into our curriculum. We spent time outdoors learning survival skills and stream ecology, firearms safety and archery. We visited Pinedale, Wyoming, where Bureau of Land Management gas fields are increasing in number in areas once used as wintering grounds for mule deer and pronghorn antelope and mating grounds for sage grouse. This has led to a decrease in animal populations. However, coordinating efforts with the US Fish and Wildlife Service has led to measures that are seeing wildlife numbers increase in the area. We visited the Elk Refuge in Jackson and the Grand Teton Visitor Center. Guest speakers to the ranch shared their experiences and knowledge as well. At the time I inquired about sponsorship through Central Ohio s SCI Chapter, I was told that the group hadn t sponsored anyone in quite awhile. Let me just say this was one of the most interesting and comprehensive classes I have ever attended. I now have new friends from coast to coast who all share an interest in promoting wildlife conservation, not to mention a new perspective to share with my students. I would like to thank Central Ohio SCI for the sponsorship that allowed me this opportunity. I would also like to say to other educators, What are you waiting for? Rina Hoge

Seneca County Pheasants Forever held the youth pheasant this past Saturday 10/28/17 over 80 youths were signed up. The sponsoring from Central Ohio SCI Chapter allowed PF to open an additional field this year and 15 more youths were able to pheasant hunt. Upon arrival hot food is available to the youths and parents free, after a safety brief the youths receive a box of shotgun shells and practice on some clay birds before going to the field to hunt. Once in the field the youths receive another safety brief about muzzle awareness hunting with dogs etc. Prior to the youths entering the field pheasants are released and over the course of the day 247 pheasants were released in the five fields. After the hunt there is a pheasant cleaning station and more free hot food. Saturday was a cold rainy day that had snow mixed in with it we have such a great hunts that 77 of the youths still should up that day. At the end of the day there is a drawing for the kids that attended and a shotgun was award. A 14 year old girl Sophia won the shotgun. Thanks to you & Central Ohio SCI at helping make this youth hunt so successful, if there is anything you need please let me know. Sincerely Don Hunter FYI We had two kids from Knox county, this pheasant hunt has grown from surrounding counties, to N.W. Ohio to Northern Ohio and is becoming a statewide even as we draw people from Toledo area, Cleveland Columbus and even counties further away.

Mark Wehinger, Tony Casagrande, Chris Schnetzler, Jacob Jorgenson Outfitter: Peter Fisher Where: Zambia - August 2017 Mark Wehinger - Leopard Chris Schnetzler - Sable Jacob Jorgenson Oribi Tony Casagrande birthday cake Animals Taken: 3 Leopards, 2 Buffalo, 1 Roan Antelope, 2 Sable, 1 Eland, 1 Angolian Bush Diker, 2 Puku, 3 Lichtenstein Hartebeest, 2 Harnessed Bushbuck, 1 Cookson Wildebeest, 1 Elephant, 1 Oribi, 1 Crocodile We arrived for our long awaited Safari in Zambia. Three of us hunting leopard and believe it or not all connecting in the first 4 days. Tony got his leopard the first night in the blind not bad for a guy who bow hunts! To say this area is crawling with leopard would be an understatement. Once the leopards were in the bag we all started to focus on the many unique species that exist in this area. Jacob was focusing on elephant and got it on the 9 thday of the safari We were all blessed to be able to hunt in such a game rich area with wonderful staff and guides. Everything was well organized with beautifully tented camps, great food and company! The trip to Zambia was fantastic and I will be sure to do it again. Life is short Let s Go Hunting! Mark Wehinger

Hunt Report: Mark Wehinger Where: Cottsworth England Driven Bird Hunt November 2017 A bucket list item for sure. I went to England with friends for my first driven British bird hunt. It s an experience everyone should do at least once. The tradition, beautiful surroundings and the people make it special. In Cottsworth we stayed in a 400 year old Lambs Inn. From there we went to four different estates to shoot birds. We had 2 days of partridge, 1 day for ducks, and 1 day of pheasant. For the shooting we used British side-by-side shotguns to add a little to the difficulty factor; not to mention, we were encouraged to shoot high birds due to it not being sporting to shoot low birds. This was definitely a once in a lifetime hunt that I am already signed up for again next year (OK, twice in a lifetime)! Life is short Let s Go Hunting! Mark Wehinger Al, Ben, Brett, Mark, Chris, Mike, Katie, Joe & Tony Hunt Report -Mike Wehinger Pheasant Darby Club, Mechanicsburg OH-December 2017 We had a beautiful day for pheasant hunting with our hosts Dave Perdue and Steve Scheiderer at the Van Darby Club. They took our groups out with dogs and made sure our day was a great one. As the photo suggests, we had a very good day! The folks along for the hunt included myself, Katie Wehinger, Joe Wehinger, Mark Wehinger, Al Heverzi, Tony Casagrande, Mark Arnold, Chris Fisher, Brett Dormire, and Ben Dormire. I d also like to thank Tim McKelvey for his willingness to once again play host and make us fat and happy with his culinary skills (and a libation or 2) after the hunt! Thank you all for another great day in the field! Mike Wehinger
