1 Negaunee Rod & Gun Club Newsletter Club Websight: negauneerodandgun.com Volume 110, Number 2 Summer 2018 A New Event - The Coyote Challenge Mark Saturday, August 25 as a must day to come out for our first annual Paper Coyote Challenge. It s a 300 yard shoot, firing prone or sitting with any rifle and any sights configured as if you were actually hunting. A bi-pod is okay, but leave the shooting jacket, portable bench rest, etc. at home. You will need only 20 rounds to run the course. The target is a life size NRA Coyote target with two orange bonus circles. The entry fee is just $20.00 with women and kids 16 and under shooting for free. We will provide the target pullers, so all you will have to do is shoot. Re-fires will be just $10 bucks. We plan on having lots of prizes including a new Muzzle Loader, a Bark River knife, and plenty of other great things to select from. Every shooter will be entered in the prize drawings and there will be a Steel Gong event on the side which will allow you to earn additional prize ticket chances. For further information or to volunteer to help with this fun shoot contact Pat Scott at (906) or Reg at upguns@aol.com. Come Shoot the Pig Iron The Pig Iron Classic, the all steel target pistol match returns on July 7. You don t have to be a great pistol shot, but just have the desire to have a fun afternoon of shooting and comradeship. There will be steel popper targets, a six disk plate rack and various action targets spaced 4 to 25 yards from the line to test your handgun skills. Once again, the evil spinning Texas Star will be ready to make a grown man cry. In total, there will be about 20 or more targets to engage, all shot for time. You ll need either a revolver or semi-auto pistol (or better bring both), at least 4 speed loaders or clips, a box or two of ammo and a holster. There are three categories to enter: Revolver, Semi-auto; and Unlimited with shooters' results divided into multiple categories so there are lots of awards to hand out. There is also Team competition so bring a buddy. Firing begins about 9:00 AM and runs throughout the day. Come out Friday afternoon at 3:00 PM to help set up and you'll get a chance at a free practice run. For further info contact Bob Weisenberger NRA Membership Discounts Did you know that if you renew or join the NRA through your club that you can get a great discount and your club receives a rebate? After a decade of serving as the head chef of our Wild Game Dinner Don Ruokolainen is stepping down. We need a club member or better yet, several of you to don the Game Master chef s hat and keep this great tradition alive. Don surely will share his secret recipes and planning script to the new cooks. Please give Don a call at We cannot let this traditional event come to an end. President s Corner Your fellow club members are always talking. Here are some of their latest questions and comments: Q My wife feels that she is not quite ready to take the Concealed Pistol License (CPL) class. Can our club offer a basic pistol class to boost up her handgun handling confidence? A: Yes, we are looking at offering the NRA Basic Pistol course this coming winter. It is an eight hour beginner s class with hands-on range training. The class will be held in our in-door range and class room. Watch for a finalized date in the Fall newsletter. Q: Should I put empty aluminum or steel cases in the brass cans at the range? A: Yes, even though we do not receive too much money by salvaging these cases we do segregate and sell these cases to the local metal recycle firm, along with the fired.22 LR brass and other empty brass center-fire cases. Q: I would like to become a member of the club s Board of Directors. How do I get on the next election ballot? A: Talk with any club officer or a current Board of Director member and tell them of your interest. They can then forward your name to the election committee. Q: I really enjoyed the Classic Military Meet. I d like to thank all of those who put on this great event. A: Thanks for your kind comments. I ll certainly pass it on to all those who helped setup and run this annual event. Q: I missed out on the last club pasty sale. Any chance in getting any of these great treats? A Yes, there are normally a couple of additional pasties left over and placed in the club s freezer. See Jon, at the bar or talk with Kathy Ruokolainen and ask if there are any additional pasties left. Unwrap the pasties from the aluminum foil and bake at 350 degrees for one hour and enjoy. 2

4 21 Patch AR Cleaning As much as we like blasting away with our AR- 15 s, just as equally, we hate having to clean our black rifle afterwards. Here is a quick cleaning regimen that will get your rifle fouling free and match ready. This routine will work on any center -fire rifle. First off, here is a list of cleaning gear that you ll need to clean your AR: Hoppe s # 9 Sweet s 7.62 or Barnes CR-10 Lucas Contact Cleaner Brass Bore Brush Nylon Bore Brush Trucon Gun Oil Dewey Coated One-piece Cleaning Rod 21 Quality Cleaning patches G.I. Style AR Chamber brush Here are the steps - 1. Soak that AR chamber brush with Hoppes # 9 and give it several twists in your AR chamber. As an alternative, spray thoroughly with Lucas brand Contact Cleaner with the bore tilted down. At the same time give the bolt group a good soaking with Lucas Contact Cleaner. 2. Now with a patch jig, slowly push a Hoppes #9 soaked patch down the bore from the chamber end. 3. Next, slowly run 4 dry patches straight down the bore. 4. Then take a brass brush soaked with Hoppes #9 and run slowly down the bore, pushing one way only. Once out the muzzle end, disconnect the brush, and rerun the brush through the bore 4 more times. (you do not want to push the brush back and forth in the bore; you would be just pulling the loose crude back into the rifle s barrel.) 5. Now run 5 dry patches slowly down the bore. 6. Put a Nylon bore brush on your rod and soak it with Sweet 7.62 or Barnes CR-10. Push this brush through the bore, back and forth twenty times. (Yes, this time you can go in and out.) 7. Caution - do not let the Sweet s 7.62 or Barnes CR10 remain in your barrel more than ten minutes. So to be on the safe side wait just five minutes before the next step. Use this time to clean up your bolt group. 8. Next run five dry patches down your rifle s bore to get rid of the Sweet 7.62 or CR Take a patch soaked with Trucon Gun Oil (or other high quality Teflon based gun oil) and push it through the bore. Follow it with 4 dry patches. 10. Finally, run a lightly soaked patch with a CPL down the bore and you re done. Your AR 15 Barrel should be spot clean now and ready for your next range session. Note: All of these cleaning supplies can be found at Amazon, Champion Shooter Supply, Brownell s, or Champion s Choice. Want a Genuine or an authentic M1 Garand? The CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) has these great firearms available for sale to CMP club members. Your Negaunee Rod & Gun Club is an accredited CMP club. In addition, to qualify to purchase a firearm from the CMP you must have participated in a CMP marksmanship event. We have one coming up on July 14, 2018, a CMP Garand, Springfield, and Vintage rifle match. Don t have a rifle - no problem! We can furnish you with a loner gun and ammo and provide you with first rate instruction. For further information about this match and the Civilian Marksmanship Program contact Gary Stevens, , < sawyer94@aol.com> 4

7 Kimball 30 Carbine The mystery gun in the Spring newsletter was a Kimball semiautomatic pistol chambered for the.30 Carbine cartridge. The J. Kimball Arms Company of Detroit (Here s another Michigan gun company you undoubtedly never heard of) developed this pistol with the hope of cashing in on the ready available 30 Carbine surplus ammo in the mid 1950 s. It used a unique delaying system of an annular ring cut in the front of the chamber in which the case would expand temporarily until forced out by the recoiling slide. Being a blowback design, it had an extremely stiff slide spring, but it really could not handle the high pressure of the 30 Carbine cartridge and breakage of various parts was a common occurrence. Only about 250 to 300 pistols were ever produced before the company went bankrupt. The current value of this truly unique handgun is $2,500 to $4,000. Two Man Steel Challenge It is time to finalize you accuracy loads and check your zeros. Saturday, August 18 marks the return of the 2 Man Steel Challenge match. This exciting and demanding shoot features two man rifle teams firing at steel reactive targets from ranges of 200 to 600 yards, and takes not only steady marksmanship but good teamwork to successfully run the course. There are no sighter shots, no wind flags, and your targets will be at staggered distances. On the plus side you will be shooting off of sandbags or a rifle bi-pod prone with a teammate spotter at your side. All targets will be reactive; you and your fellow competitors will know right away if it s a hit or miss. Come out and see if you can hit that elusive Red Man target. If you want a flier mailed out to you contact Reg Lipp at or <upguns@aol.com>. 7 Tiovo s Sports Tips WD-40 Again: Before you put away your winter boots don t forget to waterproof them by spraying on a coat of WD-40. It ll act as a barrier so water can t penetrate the material. Also use WD-40 to remove ugly salt stains from boots and shoes during the winter months. Just spray WD-40 onto the stains and wipe with a clean rag. Your boots and shoes will look almost as good as new. 16, 8, 4 & 2: These are the number of clicks that you need to count to move your scope s impact point one inch at 25, 50, 100, and 200 yards respectively. For example, if you want to move your impact point 3 inches on a fifty yard target you need to move your scope adjustment 24 clicks. Crest Them Lures: To restore the lost luster of your fishing spoons try polishing them with a little tooth paste. Place a little dab on soft cloth and rub in a circular motion. Auto polish also will help bring back your lures shine. Give Your Brushes a Brake: Brake spray Cleaner, that is. Keep your brass cleaning brushes like new by spraying them with brake cleaner after each use. Remember to push the cleaning brushes through the bore just once, not back and forth. Otherwise you are just putting the bore crude right back in the barrel with that reverse stroke. Cascade Canine Rescue : Next time your pup rolls on something really foul smelling take their reeking collar and stick it into the dishwasher. Your can run it in with the regular dirty dishes if your spouse doesn t notice what you re doing, otherwise do it separately. It will come out smelling fresh and sparkling clean. Gherkin Grabber: When them fish won t bite on anything try this old Finish trick, a Gherkin Grabber. Get out your nightcrawler harness and string a couple of crispy Gherkin pickles along the hooks. Same idea as pork rinds, but you can cast it a lot farther. What do you have to loose? Fish Camp Essentials: Here are five things that are a must bring to fish camp: 1) Fishing License; 2) Tabasco Sauce; 3) Poker Rule Book; 4) Extra truck keys; and 5) Second set of underwear. Oh, I forgot, a fishing pole and your tackle box.
