2 Spring is here and we re all ready to shoot outdoors. There are lots of plans for the club this year so keep an eye on the club website for workdays and special events. Our Annual Youth Shoot is coming up on May 23 so keep this date open to help. Also Friday March 22 is setup day for this event. BELOIT RIFLE CLUB From the Club President If you are a new member come out to any of our events and get acquainted. You just might get hooked on a new shooting experience. We have members with a lot of expertise in many of our disciplines that would help you get started. Don t forget our grounds crew always needs help with their part of maintaining our club. They ve always done a great job in this area and always need extra help. They are at the club every Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. till whenever. Enough said, see you at the range! Your President, Everett L. Bennett Trivia Question: Does anyone recognize any of the people in this old photograph? Or the location of where they are shooting? If so, please contact BRC Historian, Al Wendorf Silhouette The Silhouette people want to thank the new 2015 members for joining the Beloit Rifle Club. Our Silhouette range is designed for.22lr for beginners, children, and adults for metal target plinking. To the left side of our protective overhead shooting covering, there is a utility box with a shingled roof. Lift up on the shingled roof and down inside the box are sand bags and metal animals. The sandbags are used for resting the rifle and shooting from the tables. The metal animals can be set up on the stands on the range at distances of 40, 60, 77 and 100 meters. Seeing the metal animals topple over after a hit, is really a nice feeling. Make it a family outing to the Silhouette range. Only Standard and High Velocity.22 ammo is allowed. Remember Safety at all times. Starting in May through September, we shoot off hand Silhouette matches every Thursday eve starting around 5:15 ish. If you are a late arrival, you can still join in or observe what Smallbore Silhouette shooting is all about. We have had 10 year olds shoot with us from one of the tables off sand bags. Everything we do is very informal with safety being the utmost concern. We invite you and family to have fun with us and learn about the sport. This year, our weekend tournament dates are: Saturday May 16, Sunday June 21, Saturday July 18, Saturday Aug 15 (State Championship), and Saturday Sept 19. Practice is from 8:30 to 9:45 and the tournament begins at 10AM, consisting of 80 rounds both in Hunter and Std Class. All our shooting dates are on the BRC website and there is also a Silhouette Discipline page with more detailed information. We look forward to seeing members to come out and join us! 3 Center Fire Bench Rest & 500-Meter Range The 500 meter range is open but is presently open to shoot only at 500 meters. At the April 1, 2015 Board Meeting, the board approved building bullet traps at 200 yards and 300 yards. The 12 shooting benches on the 100 yard range are open for general use by all BRC club members. The 500 meter range is only open to use by those BRC members who have completed Qualification to safely use that range. The qualification process is posted in the club house and on the bulletin board at the new ranges. That process is: 1. Shoot a 3 shot group a 100 yards to verify rifle zero. 2. Obtain bullet weight and velocity. 3. Calculate the necessary sight change to impact at 500 meters (547 yards). 4. Prove proper sight adjustment from calculations in step "3" by shooting another 3 shot group at 100 yards with the calculated adjustments made to your sights. The group should be 9 inches to 14 inches high depending on bullet speed and weight. 5. After the rifle is properly adjusted to strike high at 100 yards, the shooter to be qualified must fire 4 shots at 500 meters; all shots must strike within a 20 inch square steel plate. More than 4 shots are allowed as needed. 6. Upon completion of the above orientation, the member's name, address and $5.00 processing fee, will be forwarded to Jon Nortemann. A special "RED 500 Meter" badge, with the members name will be made for the member to wear. The member will also have his/her membership card signed to substitute for the badge until it arrives. 7. There will be NO SHOOTING at any intermediate distances on the 500- meter range, until further notice. The 500 meter range is for Qualified BRC MEMBERS ONLY! NO GUESTS! The BRC will be constructing intermediate bullet traps at 200, 300, 385 meters on the 500 meter range. Notice will be provided when those range distances become approved for use by qualified members. To use the shorter distances you will need to be qualified at 500 meters. The new ranges will go cold at 15 minutes to the hour so that targets may be posted. Cars and trucks are permitted to be driven to the 500 meter bullet trap and the 100 yard target holders. The ranges, 100 yards and 500 meters will remain cold until all cars, trucks, and members have returned behind the firing line, and the "sign" is returned to the 'Range is Hot' position A 70 grain 6mm bullet at a velocity of 3300 ft/sec with a 100 yard zero, will drop 5 feet at 500 meters, and needs to be sighted in to strike 12 inches high at 100 yards. If you have any questions or constructive suggestions please call me at FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION- How Do You Clean a Center Fire Rifle That Has Been Shot With "JACKETED BULLETS"? After 47 years of reloading and cleaning center fire rifles, I have settled on cleaning in this manner. I start with a stainless steel, one piece, non coated rod. Use a bore guide appropriate for the action, rifle type. The first pass through the bore is with a semi-tight fitting patch. (I use paper towels cut to a size that will fit into the bore with slight pressure.) The first patch is soaked in 'Accelerator' produced by 'Sharp Shoot R Precision Products'. The second patch is soaked in 'Wipe- Out Patch-Out', again produced by 'Sharp Shoot R Precision Products'. Follow the instructions on the containers. This stuff 'works' very well. It takes 2 or 3 days of letting the cleaners work to finally get a clean non blue in color patch. Finally, I run a patch through the bore, soaked in 'Pro Shot 1 Step Cleaner and Lubricant' and then dry patch the bore twice. The 'Pro Shot' leaves a very light lubricant and rust preventer in the bore. All of my rifles will put the first shot from a clean cold barrel into the first 5 shot group, i.e. the point of aim for the first shot after cleaning is in a normal grouping at the normal point of impact. The above named products may be purchased from Midway USA and Brownell's/Sinclair, and others. Dates for Center Fire Bench Rest "Friendly" Matches May 9 and 23 June 13 and 27 July 11 and 25 Aug 8 and 22 Sept 12 and 26 Shooting starts at 10:30 AM. See the upgraded website for details. Matches are open to all BRC members. You are shooting only for bragging rights for that weeks shoot. Come and enjoy. I will conduct 500 Qualification right after we shoot our Center Fire Bench Rest match. If you wish to qualify, please show up by 11:00 AM. I will also conduct 'qualification' between 9:00 AM and noon on all Wednesdays that the 'Wednesday Morning Group' shoot. If none of these times work, please call me to work out a time. Thank-you Paul Schuler REMEMBER THESE TWO RULES: 1. No unintended discharge of a firearm. 2. No rounds to leave the range.

4 Defense/Combat Range Over the winter months our defensive shooting skills can really deteriorate due to lack of practicing, unless we use dry fire practice techniques in our homes with lasers etc. One problem during cold, nasty weather is that at most indoor ranges you cannot perform your defensive shooting drills, such as, moving sideways, using your strong hand and weak hands as well as a two hand hold, moving forward and backward and shooting at multiple targets much less draw from our holsters and shooting. The only way you can practice the above skills during the winter in addition to doing dry firing drills at home is to participate in IDPA, Action Pistol, Police Combat or IPSIC shooting events around the area. These mentioned events are strongly recommended to stay sharp and alert. During the winter you have been practicing at least these simple drills in our indoor range, haven t you? I,e,, shooting with your strong and weak hands, shooting behind cover using the wooden range partition wall at your shooting station exposing your body as little as humanly possible to whatever could be downrange. Practicing precision trigger fundamentals by shooting at a 3 inch circle, 10 feet down range. The idea here is to concentrate on putting all your rounds into the black circle, speed is not a factor in this drill. This basic trigger drill (think fundamentals) was recommended to us by a combat Marine Instructor at a local defense range each time you go shooting. One common thread in reading our various defensive shooting literature, articles and books, watching videos from the police, civilians and military that have been involved in critical incidents is that the bad guys do not stand still, like a bulls eye target down range. If you stand in one spot, you may be setting yourself up for a nasty situation (a moving target, you, is harder to hit). The following excerpt from Tactical Training by Richard Crays, Spring 2015 revealed the following eye opening facts. Crays states - Over the last 34 years, I have had the opportunity to talk to more than 200 people who have been involved in gunfights and watched more than 300 videos of gun fights. In all those encounters, I found only seven in which the shooter used both hands and a perfect stance for the engagement. Most were pushing someone out of the way, holding a flashlight in one hand or just didn t have time to get the other hand up there. Think long and hard about the last paragraph, myself and the people I mentioned this article excerpt to, where very surprised by his research. NRA High Power Civilian Marksmanship Program Welcome new members! For those who don t know what High Power is please check out this web site. If you haven t shot a three position match (standing, sitting / kneeling, prone), there is a CMP clinic on April 26 which covers all you need to know. The clinic covers shooting positions, shot technique, range safety and commands that you need to participate. High Power dates are: May 3, May17, June 14, July 12, August 2, August 23, September 6, September 20 and October 4. The range is open for sighters at 8am and the match begins at 8:30am. Fees are $10 for adults and $5 for juniors and members of the Guard and Reserve with an ID. Work hours can be earned by helping with matches. We would like to start a junior program by coaching and help with equipment. Please contact Pete Taylor peterj_tay lor_382@comcast.net for more information. If you would like to help by donating your time and / or your old gear that is gathering dust, it would be most appreciated. Remember, we need to sustain our sport by bringing in new shooters. Watch your footing while moving and shooting, keep safe, always point your weapon down range and enjoy developing your skills. Your comments about this article, if any would be appreciated. 6 Youth Sports Fest/NRA Instruction The Youth Sports Fest Committee is already hard at work. The event will be May 23rd from 8 am 4 pm. We have committee meetings scheduled for 3/9, 3/23, 4/6, 4/20, 5/4 and 5/18. We meet at 6:00 pm and usually go for an hour. The event is registered with the NRA and we already have Frito Lay, Remington and Cabela s as sponsors. We are looking for more sponsorships as this is not a money maker for the club and sponsors help offset the loss to the club. We have the applications available for registration on the club website. We anticipate the event filling up, so please register your kids early! I have several people interested in an Illinois Concealed Carry Class. I need a few more people to put a class together. Cost is $ for club members and $ for non- members. This is 2 days of training to fulfill the educational requirement for the permit. Contact me at thelbig@charter.net if you are interested. We are considering doing an NRA Metallic Cartridge Reloading Class. If you are interested, please contact me. This is a very good course, but space will be limited if we decide to go ahead. Did you know you can sign your kids up as life members in the NRA at a very reasonable cost? This could be a nice gift that will give for a lifetime.
