CBRSA (Benchrest) Dennis Thornbury More from the December meeting: Hey reloaders, contact Jim about the reclaimed range brass that is available for purchase Daniel Mansergh, CCW instructor, will be handing off the class to another instructor effective after the regularly scheduled January 2018 class. Daniel will be pursuing other firearm related work in the Clovis area, having bought a partnership with the existing BRECO Firearms shop. BRECO, 1508 Tollhouse Road, #A, Clovis. The number for the shop is Wade Roberts will be taking over the CCW class at the club. He will announce his dates and times in the near future. Wade indicated that there are changes to the CCW regulations. Some of the changes are a new plastic CCW card that will allow for more firearms to be listed. And, veterans do not have to show a DD form. Some discussion covered that renewals are soon to be on-line only for Tulare County. When clicking on the CCW website page link, beware that you are going to the correct site. Some members indicated that they were (misdirected) to a Florida based CCW renewal page. Apparently it is difficult to discern if you are at the right page and may not be able to get your money back if your shopping cart is completed at the incorrect place. Wade says, YES, a portion of his CCW class will cover how to navigate the website. For those without online access, Wade will assist you with that as well. You will still need to go to the sheriff s department for fingerprinting and photo. Frank gave a run down on some upcoming laws taking effect on the first of the year or for One of which is the requirement for purchasing ammo thru a licensed ammo dealer. If you order your ammo either on-line or thru a catalog from an out of state seller, that ammo cannot be shipped directly to you. It must go thru a licensed ammo seller. That seller is allowed to charge a handling fee for that service. Additional restrictions for ammo purchases will reflect a background check before the purchase will apply in July The regulations on mail order sales don t address unassembled ammunition parts bought by those who make their own (reloading components). Here s a link to a nice article from the Sacramento Bee that helps explain what the new laws are: The VSA election committee, chaired by Esther Gipson, confirmed the election of officers and the two elected board members: Bob Gaalswyk and Sean Vedenoff. An update from Ernie Kumpe on the range construction indicated that the club needs to have a trained lead specialist before further clean soil can be spread to cover the exposed portion of the old dump site. This will cause a delay of unknown time before the range is open to the desired 300 yards.
3 PAGE 3 JANUARY 2018 PAGE 3 Congratulation to Jeff K. for winning the big drawing at the club meeting, with his winning $10 ticket, he chose a full size gun safe. Each club meeting offers a chance to win a choice of a handgun, gun safe, or a pig hunt. Tickets are only sold at the meeting. See you there! At the December board meeting: President Dennis Thornbury announced the two appointed board members. They are Royce Nalls and Ernie Kumpe. Congratulations to the both of you! Discussion also covered the ongoing range improvements, the upcoming January 27, 2018, VSA Junior Pheasant Hunt, and confirmed the December election results. FAMILY DINNERS - Join us for our mouthwatering January BBQ dinner on Saturday, January 10 th. Tickets for dinner are limited and must be reserved and paid for by calling Jim Mayfield, , we accept cash, checks and credit cards. Adult dinner tickets are $16.00, kids 12 and under are $ At each dinner we have an opportunity to win a shotgun, a.22 rifle, or a key pad pistol safe (tickets are only $5). Have you thought about volunteering is some way for the club activities? Our family dinners are an easy way to break the ice! You may have a special knack at decorating and setting up tables for the dinner, maybe your skill is prep work for one of the dishes that will be served, or put your multi-tasking to use while peeling potatoes and sharing your favorite jokes!! Come on down the afternoon of the dinner, introduce yourself, enjoy a drink during our volunteers happy hour. Need more info, call Jim at CCW Permit Classes: Daniel Mansergh conducts the CCW permit class once a month, at the VSA club house. Classes are held the first Monday of the month from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and are free to club members. There is no need to call ahead, just show up with your California ID and proof of current VSA membership. He will NOT accept membership applications or renewals at the CCW class. He is approved for Tulare, Kings, and Fresno Counties (Kings and Fresno County residents must qualify with their carry weapons. Range time will be scheduled at the class. No need to call first.) For more info, Daniel can be reached at ; danielmansergh@gmail.com. More info coming soon regarding the new instructor and calendar, after Daniel transitions to his full time endeavor at BRECO Firearms in Clovis. Daniel, thank you for your years of service to the VSA club and to the citizens of our communities!! Shooting Training CCW Classes and more: Col. Jeff Cooper stated that there are three things you must have to be a competent martial citizen : Mindset, Gun Handling, and Marksmanship. Jeff Sanders of Legacy Defense offers these three things. 1) Mindset: You will acquire this from his CCW permit classes that are generally held on the third Wednesday of each month for Tulare and Kings County, and Utah (which adds the following states not covered by CA permits: NV,WA, WY, ND, LA, WV, GA, DE, (subject to change)). Jeff will hold the class at your location home or business, or the VSA clubhouse for as few as four attendees! 2) Gun Handling: This can be accomplished IN YOUR HOME using laser equipment and inert firearms, or at the range, or by combining both training regimens. 3) Marksmanship: This too can be accomplished IN YOUR HOME using laser equipment and inert firearms, or at the range with live ammo, or by combining both training regimens. Bring all three measures together in YOUR environment - home or business - with a customized training session that will prepare you to win a violent confrontation. Check with Legacy Defense. Jeff Sanders: The VSA 10th Annual Junior and Woman s Pheasant Hunt will be Saturday, January 27, 2018, at Guns and Roosters Hunting Preserve near Porterville. Registration for the hunt is now open to club members - juniors (under 18) and women with a valid hunting license. Three pheasants will be put in the field for you to hunt. You will be hunting with trained bird dogs and their handlers. There will be BBQ lunch after the morning hunt along with raffle prizes, one of which will be a shotgun. This is a free hunt (no charge). If you want to sign up Loren at lorenmetz@aol.com, and he will sign you up. Loren will then send each hunter more detailed information about the hunt.

Did you know that you could be one of the next RSOs to start on the job training? That means you can start enjoying the benefits of being an RSO; enjoying the satisfaction of helping others; enjoying knowing that you learned something new on your range service day. We need men and women that work well with others and apply rules carefully and respectfully. Call Russ at From the American Rifleman magazine, May 1985, page 58, here is an explanation of Berdan vs Boxer primer types: Question I notice that the new CCI Blazer ammunition is said to be non-reloadable because it uses Berdan primers. Just what is a Berdan primer, and why does it make a cartridge non-reloadable? Answer: There are two major varieties of metallic cartridge primers. Col. Hiram Berdan of the U.S. Army invented his primer in 1866, about the same time Col. Edward Boxer of the British Army developed the primer that bears his name. Ironically, the Boxer primer is standard in U.S. cartridge making, while the Berdan is more common in Europe. Both primers operate by percussion; they differ in the anvil against which the priming compound is crushed. The Boxer primer has its own anvil, while the Berdan primer requires a cartridge case with an anvil built in. The Boxer system has become dominate in this nation because it allows easy decapping of a fired case for reloading. Because if its off-center flash holes, the Berdan case is quite difficult to decap; the primer must be pried out or expelled by hydraulic pressure. For military use, the Berdan primer system has its advantages; the fixed anvil cannot be omitted or inserted upside-down, and there is room for more priming compound. CCI uses the Berdan system (remember this is an article from 1985) to make its Blazer aluminum-cased ammunition non-reloadable, at least by the average home reloader. The firm designed the round for minimum cost one-time use, and wanted to prevent experimentation with its aluminum hull. Best wishes for a healthy and prosperous NEW YEAR!!!!
