2 I want to thank everyone for attending the 2014 Ironman Tournament in Missoula. Also, many thanks go out to those providing help with the matches and to Mark Skeels and Don Erpenbach for their work with the junior shooters. Lastly, the efficiency of the matches was due to Don Strom running the line so well. Tournament Highlights Many shooters fired some incredible scores and personal bests throughout all the matches that make up the IRONMAN Tournament. We are also likely to see two more additional NRA National Records fall because of some great performances in this tournament. This will make 12 or 13 National Records fired in the last five years at the Deep Creek Range. Great shooting everyone!! XTC matches Naturally, accolades go to match winner Trent Hering for firing an incredible X s. Allen Spiker and Steven Powell were also up there and doing well. Nipping at the High Master s heels was Matt Waite, whom out shot all comers and took two match wins with excellent scores in both rapid fire events. (Matt will be a high master soon!) In the Expert class, there was an interesting occurrence with Yarger, Neher, Gathercole and Strandberg all firing Master level scores. These guys are the next wave of contenders in the CMP Leg matches! In the Marksmen class, Sam Lindgren out shot all other comers and fired a sharpshooter score in only his second match. Great job Sam. Our lone optic contender is Phil Meyers, who shot some excellent scores with his scoped match rifle. For those wondering, you can fire a scoped rifle in the XTC matches as per new NRA rules from several years ago. Mid Range matches- In the 2 x 600 yard matches, Sam Lamping broke a NRA National Record with his first match and then proceeded to set the bar even higher with his second match. In the F-Open division, Roger Hoppe took the overall win on Sunday and a few shooters back was a new competitor, Steven Kreyenhagen who had a very good first tournament. In the F-TR rifle division, Don Erpenbach fired a very good score, but not good enough to beat his young protégé, Andrew McLain. Andrew took the division win by one point. Scott Pritchard, Jim Self, Sam Lamping and Emma lamping all did well and only one point and some X s separated the four of them. In the Sling division, Trent Hering, firing a 6 BR took another win for the weekend. Close behind was his main challenger for the weekend, Steven Powell. Mid Range Team Match This format of 4 person teams is what we will continue with in Missoula. They are the required format to be in contention to fire a NRA National Record. This match was dominated by the rd Sniper s in the F-Class division and Team US Tactical Supply in the Sling division. The rd fired an impressive score likely establishing a new National Record. They set the bar high for this record congrats. These team matches are a great opportunity to learn to be a better shooter and read the wind better. I would suggest that you try to form a team in advance and stick together in future tournaments. Learn to work together and model yourself after the better teams out there. As a team member, you will accelerate your learning more than you ever will on your own. There is no better way to learn to read the conditions than when you sit in that captain s chair and coach your shooter. Palma Match The Palma match is a single match made up of 3 stages fired at 800, 900 and 1000yds. Both Kelly Moore and Steven Powell fired the more restrictive Palma rifle (308W (or 223R), iron sights) against a number of shooters using ballistically superior rifles. In spite of this, Powell and Moore shot the top scores in the sling division with Powell firing an excellent X (out of X). Along the way Powell shot all 15 of his record rounds into the X-Ring at 800yds! In the F-Open division, George Chancellor did very well taking the division win over McCall and O Neill who had to have their identical scores broken by a tie breaker rule. Again, Steven Kreyenhagen did very well in his first match shooting a 260REM. The F-TR division was won by many time champ Mike Anderson, with a fantastic X score that beat all the F-Open shooters. A little bit further back was Don Erpenbach firing a stock savage chambered in.223 Remington using 80.5 grain Bergers. He showed that this little cartridge is a contender with a very good score at 1000yds. The Ironman Aggregate After all the dust settled, and all the scores were added up from the weekend, it came down to X s. A total of 2050 points and 205 X s were possible in this tournament. In the end, Steven Powell fired a total of X to Trent Hering s score of X s. Potential Changes For 2015, we are considering some changes to the structure of the bulletin and awards. We also would be glad to hear some suggestions for the event and what you think can help improve it. As the name Ironman implies, this event is about a hard test of marksmanship and we are considering changing the Ironman awards to ranking the competitors from top to bottom regardless of whether they fired the XTC match or not (meaning all shooters will be placed together). So, if you are a prone only (F-Class or Sling) shooter, you might want to consider participating in the XTC matches, as this could certainly give you a leg up in the rankings should this change occur. We are even considering allowing a prone shooter to shoot XTC for yd stages and then switch to their prone rifle of choice for 600yds. Another possibility being discussed is to include the Friday pistol match aggregate in the Ironman. While these ideas are being bantered about, understand that the awards for the Ironman Match (Match #13) are not as significant for the awards for the individual matches. So, not placing high in the Ironman mostly means you lose out on the bragging rights.
