1 Member Bulletin Late October 2018 BIG EVENT FOR YOUNG FENCERS...COMING UP SOON The biggest event of the year for young fencers is fast approaching: the 2018 Koala Mini Challenge and Friendship Cup will be held at the NSW Fencing Centre over 5 days from 5 December to 9 December. This year we expect upwards of 400 entries competing in four age categories (U8, U10, U12, U14) in three weapons in individual and teams for girls and boys.

Organising the Koala Mini Challenge and Friendship Team Cup requires an intense effort and we re looking for volunteers. We need people to run registration, manage the sales desk, help out in the canteen, assist the DT and help with the daily setup and tidy up. Most of all, we need referees. If you can help with reffing, even for only a few hours, please contact Alex Andre and let her know when you are available and what weapons you can ref. Entries for the 2018 Koala Mini Challenge will close 4 December at 6:00pm - Any Fencer who misses this deadline will incur late fee. - Fencers must contact entries@nswfencing.org.au and supply entry details - There will be NO registrations on the day without prior notification via to entries@nswfencing.org.au 4. ALL Fencers must check in at the registration desk on the day of the competition to be marked present. It is recommended that ALL fencers arrive at least 45 min prior to start time.

5 THE THRILL OF THE 2018 YOUTH OLYMPICS Having just returned from the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires Robert Ciccarelli had the experience of a lifetime! The honour of competing against the World s best fencers in a surrounding fostering friendship and excellence is something that will stay with him forever. Aside from the competition, the bonds made with his fellow Australian team mate Giorgia Salmas and athletes from around the world was an unexpected bonus. Friendships were cemented by the exchange of official jackets and shirts at the end of the Games with Robert swapping gear with athletes from Italy, Argentina, Singapore and Chile and swapping National Olympic pins with as many as 30 countries! From an Australian Embassy reception to Olympic Village activities, to supporting other Aussie athletes, Robert was fully immersed in the environment and took advantage of every opportunity afforded him.

A HUGE ROUND OF APPLAUSE TO OUR STATE CHAMPIONS Bravo to our 2018 NSW Open Championship winners!

8 WINNERS OF THE GOLDEN FOIL The Peter Witkop Golden Foil for U14 foil fencers was hotly contested on Sunday 21 October. This is an annual prize awarded to the Sydney Olympic Cup U14 foil gold medallists. This years winners, Neve O Neill and Steven Ilin came away with gold, a cup of lollies and a beautiful functioning gold coloured foil that they are sure to treasure forever. The golden foils are donated each year by Swordsplay in recognition of Peter Witkop s contribution to fencing in NSW. When asked whether they would actually fence with their golden foils, both said, no ; Steven is keeping it as a trophy and Neve O Neill will be mounting hers above her bed. (safely of course!) NSW VETERAN HONOURED BY FIE Allison Blom has been presented with a special FIE certificate acknowledging her tenth World Veterans Fencing Championships. The award was given to Allison at the gala dinner for the 2018 world veteran champs, a stylish affair held at the Italian Naval Academy in Livorno. Congratulations Allison!
