A martial practitioner learns that in order to achieve the seemingly impossible, sometimes you need to go beyond pre-conceived notions and boundaries. How flexible is your thinking? 6 A Responsibility of Teachers & Students... Since I began my study of the martial arts forty years ago, Iʼve had the opportunity to learn from some of the most knowledgeable teachers of our time. In 1972, I began training with Master Kale Makaio, a brilliant teacher. During three of the years that I was with the US Air Force, I was stationed in Japan. While there, I trained with a number of senior Japan Karate-Do Federation instructors. I also trained with the nephew of Masutasu Oyama and Master Hanagumi Toshiro, President of the All Japan Bo-Jitsu Federation. Upon my return to the United States, in 1980, I began learning from Grandmaster Robert Trias, Father of Karate in America. Master Trias is responsible, in large part, for a great deal of what we see in the karate industry, today. Master Trias was a giant of a man in many ways, and I consider myself lucky to have trained with him. After he passed away in the summer of 1989, I was adopted by one of his senior students and organization directors, Hanshi George Anderson. Since I was the reigning USKA World Champion when Master Trias passed away, I had the option of joining just about any traditional karate organization. Becoming part of Hanshi Andersonʼs was an important move to continue my growth in the martial arts. After Hanshi Anderson passed away in August 2009, I again began my search for a teacher. In the process, I found not only an incredible martial practitioner but a friend. John Viol Shihan holds a Menkyokaiden status in Sogobujutsu, meaning that he is one of a very, very few people worldwide with complete knowledge of the system. No matter how great the teacher I studied with, nor how great his accomplishments, there was one common thread I found running through all their hearts and souls. Every single one spent, or still spends, his life teaching -- passing on his knowledge to others. Because of this attitude, we are all here as students of the martial arts and sciences. My teachers are the reason you and I are here. We all have a responsibility to pass on to others the knowledge we gather along the way. I believe that in order to grow in the martial disciplines, you must study and teach. Without study, your appreciation of the martial disciplines is limited to your current knowledge. Without teaching, your unique understanding remains hidden and isolated. The martial disciplines are a practice and not a philosophy.
