2 Dear Aerial Arts Association Competitor, Thank you for joining us for the Inaugural Season of the Aerial Arts Association s US Competitions. We are beyond excited to be bringing Aerial Hoop Competition to the world as an art form for everyone to enjoy, appreciate and experience! The following document is provided to help answer any questions that you may have about the competition in detail. Information from music to Hoop rigging is included in this document. TRAVEL Flights: You can to fly into either San Francisco International Airport (SFO) or Oakland Airport (OAK). Both have easy access to the city via the BART transit system. San Francisco Public Transit: The MUNI system offers both trains and buses that will easily get you around the city as needed. Uber and Lyft both are very popular in San Francisco and are a worry-free form of transit. ACCOMODATIONS There are a variety of hotels in and around the theater. Airbnb is also a very popular option in the bay area, especially for group accommodations. CHECK-IN You will be required to check in for divisional meetings one hour before your division takes the stage. This meeting is mandatory and if you do not attend, you may be disqualified. During this meeting we will explain the performance logistics and introduce you to the Back of the House Manager. We will do our best to adhere to the performance schedule. 5 there is a possibility that we could run ahead of the posted schedule so please plan to come early. Estimated timeline of performances will be sent out on February 24th, one month before the event, as listed above. TICKETS Spectator tickets are available for purchase at : AerialArtsAssoc.com As a competitor you receive a complimentary pass to the section of the event in which you are competing. Please note that only PRO competitors receive a pass to attend the PRO competition. Amateur competitors will need to purchase a ticket to the PRO division if they choose to attend. Please read the website for more details about tickets. Limited tickets will be sold at the door but we cannot guarantee availability on the day of the event. Updates will be posted on the website and Facebook page if ticket sales reach capacity. HOOP The competition hoop is a single point hoop. The bottom of the hoop will hang 6 feet above the floor. This height is not be adjustable. There are three hoop sizes available to choose from 35, 37 and 39. The Hoop is aerial industry standard diameter of 1 inch (25.4mm) thick hollow tubing. The spanset looped on the top of the hoop will connect to the rigging in the theater. There will be 12 of working spanset for the competitors to utilize. The hoop will be taped with Mueller Tape. You have the option to choose between a panel mat and a crash mat directly under the hoop. The hoop will be hung 10 feet from the front of the stage. There will be 15 feet on each side of the hoop and 15 feet to the back curtain. The rigging needs might slightly vary the dimensions of the hoop location on the stage and will be finalized the evening before. 7 LEVELS Competitors should self-select honestly best suits them in which to compete in from the following levels: Level 1 Ideal for people who have been practicing for less than 1 year*. Level 1 Restrictions/Requirements: No use of the top bar beyond holding it with hands No use of the spanset (You can touch the spanset but cannot invert or climb on the spanset) No in-hoop inversions No single point of contact hangs (But you can hold on to the hoop with one hand if you are standing on the ground) No spinning, swinging or orbiting Song length max: 3 minutes Floorwork and on the ground dance elements are encouraged *Level 1 performers shall not teach or performed on the lyra for compensation Level 2 You have been practicing for more than one year and feel comfortable doing basic inversions off of the floor and inverting from a sit on the low bar to the high bar. Level 2 Restrictions/Requirements: May include spinning elements into the choreography May do high bar work but no spanset work (You can touch the spanset but cannot invert/climb nor use the spanset for tricks) In hoop inversions allowed but not required No single point of contact hangs (But you can hold on to the hoop with one hand if you are standing on the ground) No swinging or orbiting Spinning is allowed Song length max: 3:30 minutes Floorwork and on the ground dance elements are permitted and encouraged *Level 2 performers shall not teach or performed on the lyra for compensation Level 3 You have been practicing for more than one year and feel comfortable spinning off of the ground, and executing moves with two points of contact. Level 3 Restrictions/Requirements: Must include at least one spinning element into the choreography Drops are allowed but not required Must include high bar work May do high bar and span set work Swinging and orbiting is allowed Song length max: 4 minutes Floorwork and on the ground dance elements are encouraged Property of Aerial Arts Association v7.1 7

8 Doubles This category is designed for two or more performers and there are no requirements or restrictions on gender. Refer to our judging details for scoring criteria. Showcase Performer. This is ideal for those who would like the opportunity to perform on a stage in a professional environment. Showcase performances may be solos, but may also be doubles or groups. Showcase performers will not receive scoring points that contribute to ranking or future competitions and will not receive judge feedback. No scoring or feedback from the judges will be given and this category will not qualify you for later competitions.. For group performances group size is undefined but a maximum of 2 people in the hoop at a time for safety purposes. Professional - You have experience either competing in, teaching or performing aerial lyra for compensation and are comfortable with spinning, single points of contact holds and ballistic movements like drops. Professional Level Restrictions/Requirements: Must include at least one spinning element into the choreography Must include a drop of some kind Must include high bar work Must include a roll variation Song length max: 4:30 minutes Floorwork and on the ground dance elements are permitted and encouraged MUSIC Music due date in listed in the Important Dates Section Above. If your music is not received by the date listed your will be required to pay a music fine of $10 per week late (or fraction thereof) If your music is submitted within 48 hours of the day of the event you will be required to pay a $50 music fine. You will be billed via Paypal or in cash on the deadline. All late fees must be paid before you go on stage to perform. AAA is not responsible for the quality of music submitted for the event. Competitors should confirm submission of their music before the event (see deadlines noted in the Important deadlines section above). Music files must be submitted in either m4a or mp3 format. Please be sure to edit your music appropriately before submission. Competitors may use original or edited music, or DJ mixes and mash-ups. Swear words in songs will be permitted but the use of hate speech and racial slurs will not be allowed and will result in disqualification. Music length restrictions per level are as follows: Level 1 3:00 minutes Level 2 3:30 minutes Level 3 4:00 minutes Showcase 4:00 minutes Doubles 4:00 minutes Property of Aerial Arts Association v7.1 8

9 Professional 4:30 minutes If your music goes over the time restriction set for your level, deductions will be applied to your performance score during judging. LIGHTING Here is the process for lighting as each performer takes the stage for their performance. (1) Enter stage (2) Silhouette light will be dimly lit (3) Competitor will take their starting position (4) Announcer will introduce competitor (5) Then lights come on to competitors selected lighting option.... (6) At the end of the performance the audience lights will come up for your final bow. There will be 2 floor lights to uplight the competitor. There will also be lights on the base of the back curtain to give it depth to the stage. Here are the 4 Competitor lighting Options to choose from: (The lighting select must be submitted with your music by the music deadline.) 1. blue pink lavender (more pink and cheerful) 2. lavender and amber (warm happy) 3. Blue and lavender (cerebral) 4. red pink (intense) PERFORMANCE Competitors are permitted to use grip aids, such as chalk or rosen, so long as they do not leave any residue on the equipment. However, competitors are prohibited from applying grip aids directly to the hoop, spanset, rigging, or any part of the equipment. Gloves may be used as a grip aid. Competitors are prohibited from applying oily substances to parts of the body that will come in contact with the hoop within one day of the event to ensure residue is not left on the hoop. If a competitor wishes to use body paints, they may use airbrushing to ensure no residue is left on the equipment. Competitors may exit the stage on either wing through the front or the back of the stage Competitors may incorporate the use of innuendo or sexually suggestive expressions or gestures in the performance. CLOTHING, SHOES, AND PROPS: Clothing AAA requires competitors to wear appropriate clothing during the performance. Coverage of genital areas is required at all times. Exposing the genital areas (areolas, vagina and penis) is strictly prohibited and such exposure will result in disqualification. If a competitor removes an article of clothing during a performance, the minimum coverage requirement described above must be met. Any articles of clothing removed during a performance will be considered a prop. See below for rules regarding props. Competitors may wear most forms of footwear, including sneakers, tennis shoes, heels, boots, or perform bare foot. Property of Aerial Arts Association v7.1 9

10 Footwear that will cause damage to the stage, hoop, or could cause injury to the performer are not allowed. Competitors must wear appropriate street clothes outside of the performance area. Props Props are allowed so long as the competitor can set them up and break them down within 30 seconds or less. Any props used by the competitor must be brought on the stage and completely removed from the stage by the competitor only. This may include larger pieces of costume that fall to the stage (not small feathers or beads, but if larger pieces fall, then they should be removed by the competitor). Props must remain on the stage during the performance (i.e., props may not be thrown into the audience). The competitor must be the only person within the performance area during the event unless the other person is an approved prop. Human props are not permitted to make contact with the hoop. Props must be submitted with a photo and brief description to by the prop deadline listed. Props must be approved by AAA in writing. Props will not be permitted if they have not been approved, and use of a prop on the day of the event without prior approval can lead to disqualification. Competitor should confirm with AAA that hers/his props have been approved. Prohibited items: potentially hazardous materials or substances, fireworks, explosives, or weapons. Please see the venue website for additional restrictions. Late submissions A $10 late fee will be charged for each week that a submission is late. If a submission is received less than two days before the event, an additional $50 fine will be charged. Even if the late fee is paid, the approval of the prop is not guaranteed. Please confirm with AAA that late prop(s) are approved. JUDGING The judge panel for the competition will be comprised of volunteers who are lyra instructors, and/or professional aerialists selected by AAA. Please note that a performance may need to be ended early in the event of a technical difficulty or disqualifying competitor action, such as the exposure of genitalia. In such cases, the judges will make the determination of whether the performer could have avoided the interruption. In the event of a disruption that was within the control of the competitor, the competitor will receive point deductions and may resume the performance or may be disqualified. All decisions made by the judges are final. AAA will send judge feedback to the competitors within 30 days after the event. 11 Competitors acknowledge that, even with defined criteria, judging an artistic sport involves a certain degree of subjectivity. Please contact AAA if you have any questions or concerns about the judging system. AAA will investigate all valid concerns regarding judging to ensure a fair and honest system is in place. Communication between judges and competitors is prohibited before or during performances. SCORING Each level is scored with a different points system in accordance with the skill level. For details on our scoring system and to view the judging sheets please refer to our Judging Details page. TRANSFERS You may transfer your performance slot to another competitor anytime until March 10, In order to do so, please us the following information: New competitor information, including: Name Age address Studio affiliation if any Event and level of the new competitor Hoop size, lighting preference Prop description and photo Please cc the new competitor on this ! PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEOGRAPHY We will have a professional Photographer/Videographer at Aerial Arts Association competitions offered by professional Bay Area videographer, JJ Casas of 45. Photo and Video packages are available for purchase in advance and at the competition using this link. *Know that the first to purchase the packages will get their edits first. You are welcome to take pictures from the audience as long as you are not disruptive to the rest of the audience or block their view. Please tag posted images and video on social media at Aerial Arts Association. All other camera types, like professional cameras, are not permitted except those approved media representatives with AAA approval. All competitors/performers will be required to sign a photo release agreeing for Aerial Arts Association to use the images produced at this competition in the future. All photography and footage remains property of the competitors as paid for. AAA may choose footage from the event to appear on TV, film, or print or social media. 12 ADDITIONAL RULES & REGULATIONS All fees must be paid prior to the event otherwise competitor forfeits the right to compete. Prior to the event, liability waivers must be signed by all participants, including competitors, judges and volunteers. All competitors must arrive fully sober. If the event organizers suspect that a competitor is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the competitor will not be allowed to take the stage, will be disqualified, and the competitor will forfeit their entrance fee. Competitor is responsible for budgeting their time appropriately to allow for adequate warm-up and stretching before competing. Competitor must behave with professional sportsmanship. Any bullying or trash talking about judges or fellow competitors will not be tolerated and may result in disqualification. Refunds will not be issued for entry fees, however, a performance slot may be transferred to a replacement competitor. If AAA believes in good faith that a competitor is purposefully sandbagging a level, AAA reserves the right to move the competitor to another level. If AAA believes that a competitor's choice of tricks and movement is too advanced for their level, such that the movement is considered unsafe, AAA maintains the right to stop the competitor's performance during the competition. AAA may make changes to the level criteria, stage elements, and rules. AAA will inform all competitors of all rule changes and all changes will take effect on the date of notification. Competitor is expected to maintain professionalism in all dealings as representatives of AAA. If any provision of these terms and conditions shall be invalid, void, illegal or unenforceable, the validity, existence, legality and enforceability of the remaining provisions shall not be affected, prejudiced or impaired. AAA headquarters is based in San Francisco, California. Any disputes or claims shall be made under California law and under the exclusive jurisdiction of California courts. Competitor acknowledges that participation in the AAA event is voluntary and are responsible for covering all costs incurred as a result of the AAA event. Competitor will not seek reimbursement from AAA for any expenses incurred by competitor and AAA is not liable for any such expenses. AAA may license, subcontract, partner or merge with other companies in the ordinary course of business without competitor s consent. Competitors under the age of 18 must submit a parental consent form and have a parent or guardian present during the competition for the entire time they are in attendance at the event.
