3 Congratulations! The Heavens - A Lofty Goal! Meaning of the Blue Belt - Blue belt signifies the heavens, toward which the plant develops into a towering tree as the Taekwondo training progresses. Once you reach blue belt, you have been training for a year or more, and you have laid the groundwork for more advanced training. You must now refine your techniques to develop maximum power. Board breaking as a power test is now a part of your testing procedure. Now you must begin to focus more on this aspect of your training. Before advancing to red belt, you must build a good foundation of free sparring techniques and develop sufficient power in your techniques to be able to break boards with both a hand and a foot technique (foot only for juniors under 9 years of age). As you add power to your techniques, you must also begin to develop control in free sparring to avoid injury. This is a good test of your self discipline! Modern taekwondo is an outgrowth of the Korean War. General Choi Hong Hi, the father of modern taekwondo, taught martial arts to his elite 29th infantry division (1953), and, following the war, set out to develop and promote a system of martial arts training. There were a number of different styles (at least eight kwans (schools of thought) reported) of martial arts in Korea at that time but, through his leadership, he was able to bring most of them together under the banner of Taekwondo. On April 11, 1955, at a conference of kwan masters, historians and prominent leaders of society, it was decided by the conference to standardly adopt the term tae kwon do, which had been created and submitted by General Choi. The name was approved because of its resemblance to taekyon, an ancient Korean kicking art, and so provides continuity and maintains tradition. Not all of the eight major kwans existing at that time merged. It wasn t until September 14, 1961 that the groups once again organized into a single association called the Korean TaeKwonDo Association (KTA), with General Choi elected its first president. With anti-japanese sentiment left over from WWII, much of the dissention came from the fact that taekwondo training involved the use of Japanese terminology and techniques. The second generation of taekwondo instructors, who had received their training in Korea under first-generation Japanese-trained instructors, attempted to establish a Korean identity by developing a method of competition radically different from the Japanese system. This attempt was successful in spite of much opposition from first-generation instructors like General Choi. The first generation instructors not only opposed changing the emphasis away from forms training and toward sparring but also advocated exclusive use of the non-contact sparring system of karate. It was at this point, in the 1960 s, that the split into sport and martial art had its genesis. The martial art of taekwondo focuses on self-defense with core training methods that consist of forms, breaking, sparring and self-defense techniques. Meanwhile, the taekwondo sport that developed is based wholly on sparring and institutionalized as a sport competition. Today, Taekwondo is practiced by millions worldwide. 3

4 Study Guide 10 Articles of Mental Training: 1) Be Loyal to Your Country Loyalty 2) Be Obedient to Your Parents Obedience 3) Be Loving to Your Family Love 4) Be Cooperative with Others Cooperation 5) Be Faithful to Friends Faithful 6) Be Respectful of Master Respect 7) Be Honest in Personal Affairs Honesty 8) Show Concern for Others Compassion 9) Never Attack Without Reason Mercy 10) Finish What You Start Persistance Definition of Blue Belt: Blue belt symbolizes that the student, like a seed, is beginning to see the sky. Definition of Jhoong-gun Form: Jhoong-gun is named after the patriot Ahn Jhoong-gun, who assassinated the Japanese Governor-General of the occupying forces in Korea. There are 32 movements in this form to represent Jhoong-gun s age when he was executed in Three Target Body Sections: High - Neck and Above Middle - Waist to Neck Low - Waist to Toes 4

5 Free Sparring In order to ensure the safety of our students, all are required to purchase insurance approved safety gear through the school for their hands, feet, head and mouth. Male students are required to wear a groin protector and it is recommended that female students wear chest protectors. Students will not be allowed to spar without the necessary safety equipment. We begin free sparring with a limited selection of techniques. The first sparring set is the lead leg set. This allows the student to develop his front leg side kick, front leg hook kick and front leg round kick, singly and in combination. In addition, the student may use jabs and punches to set up kicks to the body. As a Blue Belt the student is allowed to expand their sparring techniques with the Turning Kick Set to include both legs. This allows the student to use either left or right foot in the front and to also incorporate turning kicks. At this stage of sparring, it is very important that the student develop combinations utilizing both legs, incorporate turning kicks, and continue to develop blocking skills with both hands. As a student, it is always fun to spar. However, we must learn to control our actions and to use a variety of techniques. Because these are both so difficult, we must continue developing them in order to advance to Black Belt. It is important for each student to practice Respect of Technique while sparring. Control is to deliver techniques quickly but with light touch in contrast to a full power hit. The student should understand that their partner is also using control and acknowledge techniques that could have hurt if more power had been used by not continuing his or her attack. This is Respect of Technique or maybe better referred to as Respect of Your Partner s Control of Power. The front and sides of the body above the belt are approved target areas for hand and foot techniques in all ranks. The head is an approved target for light contact kicks and non-contact punches. All other parts of the body except arm and leg blocking areas are unapproved target areas. (NOTE: face mask, neck or groin areas may not be targeted). Sweep/take-downs are not allowed until Black Belt and then only with the Chief Instructors permission. Free sparring demonstrations are also required as part of the Blue Belt Testing procedure. The purpose of free sparring at testing is not to score points on your opponent but rather to demonstrate your proficiency in a variety of techniques and assist your partner in doing the same. Allowable Free Sparring Techniques Blue Belts A. Back fist B. Forward Hand Horizontal Strike (Hammer fist) C. Turning Round Kick, Side Kick, Hook Kick D. Forward Leg Front Kick E. All Previous techniques Either right or left leg may now be placed in front. The student should strive to use both sides equally and not favor one side over the other. 5

12 Testing Congratulations! You have worked hard and have received an invitation to test. Testing is an important part of our teaching program. You must be sure that you are prepared by learning all your patterns, definitions, drills and self-protection. This manual is designed to help prepare you for testing as well. In addition, at Green Belt and above, you will be expected to demonstrate what you have learned regarding free-sparring. At Blue Belt and above, you will be expected to participate in a power demonstration by breaking wood. Be sure you have discussed your breaking techniques with your instructor prior to the testing. Wood is provided at the testing. Come a little early to allow time to warm up prior to the testing and ask any last minute questions that you may have. Remember, this is a formal occasion and requires that you wear your traditional white uniform! You know that you are eligible for testing when you receive a testing invitation letter. You will need to register in advance of the testing date. To register turn in the completed invitation along with your testing fee to the office. In addition, all student tuition must be current. Testing is a very special occasion and a great time to demonstrate to your family and friends how much you have achieved! Be sure to bring them with you to the testing. Good Luck! 12
