I am so excited with our many outstanding martial artists who are able to take time out of their busy schedules to share their knowledge and expertise with us during the Annual Seminars, March 17 th! 3 2017 USAMA Grand Internationals Seminar Instructors Fumio Demura, Feature Seminar, on Friday: KATA & BUNKAI WITH FUMIO DEMURA! Fumio Demura will introduce a Kata and its Bunkai (practical application) to us. He will also be working with us on making our Basics (Kihon) more Fun! During his 50+ years in the martial arts, Demura Sensei has earned numerous martial arts titles, has authored several books, and has been in many martial arts movies. He is sought out to teach seminars on many martial arts topics by practitioners all over the world. We are so honored to have Fumio Demura as our Feature Seminar Instructor this year! Robert Bowles Seminars on Friday: MERIDIAN THEORY AND APPLICATION SEMINAR & A TRADITIONAL BO KATA SEMINAR! Robert Bowles is a 10 th Degree Black Belt in Shuri Ryu. He was a direct student of the late Grandmaster Robert A. Trias, and is the USAMA Shuri Ryu Stylehead. Mr. Bowles is also a member of the Trias International Society and the Hawkes International Society. Mr. Bowles 9:30 am Meridian Seminar will introduce its theory and show you various applications in different techniques and its effectiveness. Mr. Bowles 3:30 pm Bo Seminar will feature a Traditional Bo Kata and the theory behind the techniques. David Blair Seminar on Friday: SPARRING FOR CHAMPIONS SEMINAR! David Blair is a Shotokan stylist who trained with Hidetaka Nishiyama. He is the USAMA Shotokan Stylehead and was a former Golden Gloves Boxing Champion. Mr. Blair has trained Olympic Champions, Jr. Olympic Champions and World Champion Sparring competitors. His training techniques involve both the mind and the body. David Blair s Sparring Seminar will share winning strategies and techniques you can implement immediately. C. Bruce Heilman & Ann-Marie Heilman Seminars on Friday: KAMA SEMINAR & A NUNCHAKU SEMINAR! Bruce Heilman, and his wife, Ann-Marie Heilman, trained in Okinawa Kenpo Kobudo and are direct students of the late Seikichi Odo and continue to instill his teachings and inspirations. Mr. & Mrs. Heilman are our Okinawa Kenpo Kobudo Stylehead & Assistant Stylehead. Both seminars will be open to all levels of practitioners. They will address manipulation of the weapon, basics, and advanced techniques. In both the 11:00 am Kama Seminar and 2:00 pm Nunchaku Seminar, learn traditional weapons kata and their practical application.
4 More USAMA Grand Internationals Seminar Instructors! GM John Tsai Seminar on Friday: DYNAMIC QI (CHI) POWER BUILDING SEMINAR! GM John Tsai is a 17 th Generation Grand Master of Meihua Qi Gong. He also studies Nei Gong for better health and Sheng Gong for healing energy & dynamic Qi power. GM Tsai has been expanding the application of Qi Gong techniques to other athletic endeavors to provide for the training of international full contact martial arts champions, Olympic competitors and professional sports athletes. He trained Arlene Limas, Olympic Gold Medalist! In the Qi Seminar, learn to build & transfer your Qi for speed, control, and penetrating power. This seminar is suggested to All levels of practitioners 12 years of age and up. Michel Laurin s Seminars on Friday: KOSHIKI JUDGES CERTIFICATION AND SPARRING DRILLS! Michel Laurin is a 6-time World Champion in Koshiki and a 3-time Japan Champion. He studied under the founder of Kenkokan School of Shorinjiryu Karatedo, Dr. Masayoshi Hisataka. Mr. Laurin is the founder of the Shorinjiryu Shindo Budo Kwai International Schools and is the Koshiki Stylehead for the USAMA. In the Certification Seminar, at 9:30 am, learn the Japanese terms for International Refereeing. You will have the opportunity to practice and repeat the Japanese terms in various posed situations to build confidence and be able to make correct judgment calls. Judges Certification of Level C is available for first timers, and the next level for the others. In the 3:30 pm Sparring Seminar, work effective sparring drills and Koshiki fundamentals to train champions or to become a World Champion yourself! Tim VanDenover Seminar on Friday: LEARN TO DUEL LIKE THE SAMURAI! Tim VanDenover is a Shorin Ryu stylist and student of the late James H. Hawkes. He also received rank under the creator of Chanbara, Tanabe Tetsundo, and competed in the 25th World Championships in Yokohama, Japan. In this Chanbara Seminar, padded sword fighting, learn proper sword handling and striking as well as hand positions and sword techniques for optimizing better control and power. Drill sets will be taught to build reaction time and reflexes. Break away from the Hollywood version of sword fighting and learn to duel like the Samurai while having a lot of Fun! Eli Guzman s Seminars on Friday: GROW YOUR SCHOOL & INCREASE ENROLLMENT SEMINAR AND A TAKE DOWN SPARRING (TDS) SEMINAR! Eli Guzman is a Top School Owner in Las Cruces, New Mexico! He will share the secrets to his success. These strategies and techniques work in any demographic to build your school and increase your retention rate. Take this 11:00 am School Seminar to GROW YOUR SCHOOL! Eli Guzman is our Take Down Sparring Stylehead. He will be teaching a Take Down Sparring (TDS) Seminar at 2:00 pm involving various scenarios and winning strategies to be used in the ring!
5 USAMA Grand Internationals Officials & More Information! Judges & Referee Seminar on Saturday: Lee Kittell is our Chief Referee. He will be conducting a Judge's Clinic on Saturday morning at 8:30am in the Cimarron Room of the hotel, just before the tournament starts. The clinic is open to all who would like to better familiarize themselves with our rules and the recent changes. Certification for Judges and Referees will be available for Adult Black Belts at a cost of $15.00 for Certification and includes your Rulebook. All aspects of the rules will be addressed for Forms, Weapons, and Sparring. Receive clarification on any questions you may have as well as strategies for running a safe ring with our Chief Referee! Also, view various examples of what can happen in the ring and learn how to handle those situations safely and fairly. Scorekeepers Seminar will run simultaneously Judges Attire for Tournament: Judges, please wear either a traditional martial arts uniform, dress pants/skirt with white shirt or USAMA polo shirt, or suit during the competition. We appreciate your professionalism. Tournament Coordinator: Cassandra Shults is our Chief Bracketer and Points Coordinator. She will be going over the bracketing process in our Judge s Clinic on Saturday. She will clarify the "modified bye," proper separation of team mates in sparring, and marking of penalties on the bracketing sheets. The Center Referee must understand the bracketing process to be sure places are properly awarded and to assist the scorekeepers for accuracy. Medical Personnel: Dr. Rick Fields is the Chairman of our Medical Board. He is a medical doctor who volunteers his time and expertise at many of our tournaments around the country as well as provides council for our Rules Committee for competitor safety. He is also an 9 th Degree Black Belt in Shorei Goju under the instruction of the late Sensei Thomas Pisut. In addition, Dr. Kathy Ulrich and Ralph Glasmann are also medical professionals as well as martial artists who serve on our Medical Board and volunteer their time and expertise. Hawkes International Society President: Eddie B. Bethea, Jr. is the President of the Hawkes International Society. The Hawkes International Society is a Martial Arts Hall of Fame which embodies those outstanding martial artists with competitive spirit who have made outstanding contributions to the arts and who represent the essence of Karate-do (the martial arts way in all aspects of their life). Mr. Bethea truly is an inspiration and role model for us all in Karate-do. The Hawkes International Society will meet on Thursday, March 16 th at 8:00 pm in the Pecos/Acoma Room of the hotel. 6 USAMA Grand Internationals Information! Trophies: Beautiful Trophies awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place individual events; Medallions for 4th Place. Medals for all Youth Forms competitors; Medallions for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place Team Event members. Award given to the Most Supportive School! Grand Champion Trophies will be awarded for Black Belt Forms, Adult Kyu Forms, Youth Beginning Forms, Youth Intermediate Forms, Youth Advanced Forms, Black Belt Weapons, Adult Kyu Weapons, Youth Weapons, Black Belt Men Sparring, & Black Belt Women Sparring. Finals Competitors will consist of: 1st Place Forms Winners * 1st Place Weapons Winners * 1st Place Adult Black Belt Sparring Winners will be competing for 10 Beautiful Grand Champion Awards! Top 2 Black Belt Sparring Teams will battle it out for 1st/2nd Place. Adult Black Belt Forms competitors will be narrowed down to two competitors at the beginning of Finals and then present Kata Bunkai later in Finals to determine the Grand Champion! Our Top Three 2016 National Point Teams have been invited to present demos at the Finals! We are very excited to have our top three Teams of the Year performing demonstrations during our finals at the Grand Internationals. These teams will march in with our Finals Competitors at the start of the Finals. Finals competitors: Report to the Hallway outside the Grand Ballroom at 6:30 pm for the "Champions March" into Finals! Photos: After awards have been presented in the ring, there will be a specially designated photo area for you to take pictures of your special martial artist and their award. Competitor Equipment/Attire: Mandatory Forms & Weapons Attire: Must wear uniform which is traditional with respect to his/her style. Mandatory Sparring Equipment: Dipped Foam Headgear, Handgear, & Footgear (No Ringstar Shoes); Mouthpiece; Groin Protection (All males). Uniform must cover elbows. Mandatory Koshiki Gear: Mouthpiece; Groin protection (All males); Shin Pads recommended. Headgear and Chest Protector will be provided at ring. Mandatory TDS Equipment: Mouthpiece, Open Hand padded gloves, Shin Guards, & Caged Head Gear (A few Head Gear will be on hand to borrow, if needed.) Uniform, or mid-thigh shorts or longer, MMA shorts, or yoga pant; and Rash Guard or T-shirt. Women must also wear sport bra. Men must wear groin protection. Prohibited items in Sparring, Koshiki, or Take Down Sparring: For the safety of our competitors, No metal or hard plastic joint braces, plaster or fiberglass casts will be allowed. Medical devices must be approved by medical personnel and Chief Referee. Disqualification: A competitor may be disqualified for excessive contact, illegal techniques, & unsportsmanlike conduct and will not be entitled to a refund or allowed to fight in any further events that day. Coaches and Spectators' unsportsmanlike conduct may also be cause for a competitor s disqualification.
