3 MERCEDES-BENZ UCI A BRIEF RUNDOWN The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup has a long, colourful history and enjoys a solid following throughout the world. Over the years, the UCI has modified the format and introduced new initiatives in order to keep up with evolving trends and meet the expectations of athletes and fans. EVOLUTION OF THE UCI 1991 It was 24 years ago that two American riders, John Tomac and Sara Ballantyne, became the first winners of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. The year was 1991, and the World Cup series comprised nine rounds in seven countries, catering for cross-country Olympic (XCO) specialists only Two years later the downhill (DHI) format joined the programme, crowning two German athletes this time: Jürgen Beneke and Regina Stiefl. Interestingly, John Tomac, XCO winner in 1991, took second place in the inaugural downhill World Cup as well as second in the XCO was the year that the dual slalom the forerunner of four-cross made its debut in the World Cup. Dual-slalom involved knock-out heats with two riders racing on parallel courses, and it featured in the World Cup for four years. American Brian Lopes and Australian Katrina Miller won the overall classification the first year After four years on the programme, the dual-slalom was replaced by fourcross (4X) in which four riders race against each other on a single course. Winner of three of the four dual-slalom World Cups, Brian Lopes went on to dominate the first year of four-cross. In the women s competition victory went to France s Anne-Caroline Chausson, already winner of the dual-slalom in Cross-country Eliminator was the next mountain bike format to join the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, from 2012 to This spectacular format for XCO specialists sees four competitors race head-to-head over a lap of around a kilometre. Introduced to the World Cup with three events in 2012, six Eliminator rounds appeared in 2013 and 2014 with the overall classifications going to Belgium s Fabrice Mels and Switzerland s Kathrin Stirnemann sees the addition of cross-country short circuit (XCC) racing into the overall XCO UCI MTB World Cup competition. 4 MERCEDES-BENZ UCI BEST EVENTS The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup rewards not only the best athletes but also the best organisers. Each year, UCI Mountain Bike Teams, sponsors, and UCI officials vote for the top events for each of the two formats: cross-country and downhill. This creates healthy competition between the organisers and encourages them to stage events of the highest quality. Cross-Country Olympic: Nove Mesto Na Morave (CZE) A regular host of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano, Nove Mesto Na Morave was voted best XCO event for the sixth time in The city in the Czech Republic returned to the World Cup calendar last year after hosting the UCI Mountain Bike Cross-country World Championships in Voters appreciated the course, team area, crowds, atmosphere and general organisation. Downhill: Fort William (GBR) For the same reasons, Fort William, Great Britain, won the vote for best DHI event. The Scottish venue hosted its 16th UCI World Cup in 2017, and has already been voted best event on five prior occasions, including in MERCEDES-BENZ UCI MEDIA GUIDE 4

5 INTRODUCTION OF FORMATS CROSS-COUNTRY OLYMPIC (XCO) Cross-country Olympic format races are held over undulating circuits (with technical descents, forest roads, rocky paths and obstacles) of 4 to 6 km, which riders must complete several times. The Elite racing times, for men and women, vary from 1h20 minutes to 1h40. An attractive course design that shows the discipline well on television and is also spectator friendly is a necessity! CROSS-COUNTRY SHORT CIRCUIT (XCC) Cross-country short circuit is a variation of Crosscountry Olympic. The start and finish must be in the same area. The distance of the course must not be more than 2 km with a race duration of 20 to 60 minutes. Natural and/or artificial obstacles are only permitted if their use has been approved beforehand by the UCI technical delegate or, in his absence, the president of the commissaires' panel. DOWNHILL (DHI) Downhill is a race against the clock in which the rider negotiates a succession of fast and technical passages. The participant must demonstrate courage as well as sharp technical and piloting skills in order to battle tree roots, rocks, banked sections, bumps, jumps and other natural obstacles along the way MERCEDES-BENZ UCI MEDIA GUIDE 5

8 THE MEDIA COVERAGE Almost 5.8 million viewers on Red Bull TV and a large TV audience reflects the enhanced broadcast offer. For the sixth year running, UCI s official partner Red Bull Media House produced the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano. In 2016, Red Bull Media House also took over the exclusive distribution for all electronic media rights. The extended collaboration between the UCI and Red Bull Media House proved extremely fruitful throughout 2017 s nineround series that spanned five months. 8 million TV viewers followed the 9 rounds of the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Series by watching either the live broadcasts or delayed highlight summaries. In total, 49 broadcasters from 104 countries covered the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano by different means: live broadcasts, highlights, news or short reports. The coverage reached a cumulative TV audience of almost 65 million. Red Bull TV broadcast over 41.5 hours live, worldwide without geo-blocking, as well as highlight shows and a large number of additional clips. Available in a variety of formats, Red Bull TV broadcasts digital through their Red Bull TV App and online platform free of charge. Almost 2.5 million views were registered for the live broadcasts on Red Bull TV throughout the season plus more than 3.3 million views by Video On Demand (VOD) of the live programmes. 12 PRESENTATION OF THE ROUNDS STELLENBOSCH / RSA XCO The first round of the 2018 Mercedes-Benz UCI Mountain Bike World Cup takes place in a venue that is new to the calendar, Stellenbosch. After Pietermaritzburg in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2014, South Africa once again prepares to welcome the stars of mountain bike for a round dedicated to XCO. Just 50km east of Cape Town, Stellenbosch is one of the Western Cape s most popular mountain bike hubs. The World Cup opener will take place on a technical 4.3km course on the slopes of the famous Coetzenburg mountain adjacent to the Stellenbosch University. 13 PRESENTATION OF THE ROUNDS LOŠINJ / CRO DHI Mountain bike s downhill specialists will meet up for their first competition of the UCI World Cup season on the Croatian island of Lošinj. Another new addition to the calendar, this medieval town of some 1000 inhabitants will provide a spectacular backdrop to the racing which will see riders tackle a short but rough and rocky track including several big drops and a unique urban section. 14 PRESENTATION OF THE ROUNDS ALBSTADT / GER XCO-XCC The German venue will organise an XCO round of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup for the fifth time since it first joined the calendar in The Albstadt bike park was created in 2004 and features a combination of physically-demanding passages and technical sections. The venue in southwest Germany is popular with XCO riders, some of whom use it to prepare for the World Cup. Albstadt has been awarded the 2020 UCI Mountain Bike Cross-country World Championships. 15 PRESENTATION OF THE ROUNDS NOVE MESTO NA MORAVE / CZE XCO / XCC Three weeks after Lourdes, the cross-country Olympic specialists will put their skills to the test in the Czech Republic. A regular host of the MERCEDES-BENZ UCI Mountain Bike World Cup and voted best event of the series five years running, Nove Mesto na Morave returns to the UCI World Cup after hosting the UCI Mountain Bike Cross-country World Championships last year. A stand-out feature is the start/finish area in the impressive biathlon stadium, which hosted the 2013 Biathlon World Championships. 16 PRESENTATION OF THE ROUNDS FORT WILLIAM / GBR DHI After first joining the UCI World Cup in 2002, this British stopover features on the calendar for the 16th time. Also host of the 2007 UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships, this spot in the Scottish Highlands is a notto-be-missed destination on the DHI calendar. Clear evidence of this was that Fort William has been voted several times winner of the best event award. 17 PRESENTATION OF THE ROUNDS LEOGANG / AUT DHI The Saalfelden-Leogang bike park opened in 2001 and has become one of the most popular European meetings for downhillers. The Austrian winter sports resort, not far from Salzburg, joined the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in 2010 and hosted the 2012 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships (Downhill/4X) followed by the 4X Worlds in 2013 and With its spectacular views, Leogang once again promises to be sensational. 18 PRESENTATION OF THE ROUNDS VAL DI SOLE / ITA XCO / XCC / DHI After hosting the final round last year, the Italian resort in Trentino returns to the calendar in 2018 with the seventh round. A regular host of the World Cup, Val di Sole also organised the UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships in 2008, and the Downhill/4X Worlds last year. 19 PRESENTATION OF THE ROUNDS VALLNORD / AND XCO / XCC / DHI The 2017 Mercedes-Benz UCI Mountain Bike World Cup continues in the Vallnord Bike Park in La Massana, Andorra, in the heart of the Pyrenees. Riders will square off on the same terrain that saw the world s best battle it out for the rainbow jersey at the 2015 UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships. 20 PRESENTATION OF THE ROUNDS MONT-SAINTE-ANNE / CAN XCO / XCC / DHI The Canadian round has been an integral part of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup since This highlight of the World Cup takes place at one of the Sommets de Saint Laurent in Quebec and deserves its reputation as a Mecca of mountain biking. Proof of its popularity: in 2016 it was voted best XCO event of the 2016 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. 21 PRESENTATION OF THE ROUNDS LA BRESSE / FRA XCO / XCC / DHI The curtain comes down on the 2018 Mercedes-Benz UCI Mountain Bike World Cup with the final round for XCO, XCC and DHI in La Bresse. The commune in northeastern France has been a regular World Cup host since 2009 and has previously won best event awards for its competitions. But be prepared for completely different courses in 2018: the organisers have moved the racing away from the town centre to the ski resort of La Bresse Hohneck. 27 2018 UCI ELITE TEAMS In total, 118 teams (84 endurance, 31 gravity, 3 mixed) from 31 countries have been registered for the 2018 season. Three nations Montenegro, Bosnia Herzegovina and Romania have registered a team for the first time. As in previous years, 30 teams (15 Endurance teams and 15 Gravity teams) have been awarded UCI ELITE Mountain Bike status. Invitations to join this higher tier of teams were issued to the top 12 Endurance (XC) teams of a special ranking which was established based on the individual UCI points won by the riders up until December 31st Invitations to the top 12 Gravity (DHI) teams were issued on the basis of the individual riders final 2017 UCI World Cup standings and 2017 UCI World Championships results. The three remaining teams of each format (XC and DHI) were selected at the UCI s discretion. UCI ELITE Mountain Bike teams benefit from advantages including free entry to all races on the UCI Mountain Bike International Calendar in the discipline in which the team has ELITE status. This includes free entry, and an obligation to enter at least one rider, into all rounds of the Mercedes-Benz UCI Mountain Bike World Cup MERCEDES-BENZ UCI MEDIA GUIDE 27
