1 1 Race Booklet Welcome NZSSMTB (Incorporating the South Island MTB Champs) competitors, supporters, volunteers, organisers and parents. This event has been sanctioned by: I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of Mountain Biking Otago (MBO) for their support, the Dunedin City Council Events funding and our sponsors. This event also exists because of you, so thank you all for coming along. Whether you re riding or supporting, or one of the numerous volunteers who makes it all possible we couldn t do this without you. We continue to see strong growth in schools competitive mountain biking and we hope by including Year 7 and 8 riders to grow our sport. This is an opportunity to test yourself against riders beyond your local region. While we hope to find the future MTB riders in New Zealand the next Commonwealth Games Gold medallist!!. But we do not want you to stop there go for it: NZ Cup, to the Olympics! But it is also a chance to have a whole lot of fun. I wish you all the best for the coming competition and hope that you achieve all the goals that you ve set for yourself. 3 3 Registration and Practice Day FRIDAY 3 rd October 2014 (i) (ii) Registration at Event HQ, Logan Park High School (LPHS), Butts Road, MBO Caravan from 5:00pm Chance to pre-ride / walk the XC and DH courses (marked by 2pm on Friday) THE CYCLEWORLD CROSS COUNTRY (XC) SATURDAY - 4 th October 2014 The Registration for the cross country is at Wakari Creek MTB Tracks, Wakari Road (MBO Caravan). Registration for XC (All events) 7.30am 8.45am at XC Course (MBO Caravan), Wakari Road SATURDAY MORNING CROSS COUNTRY (XC) Venue: Wakari Creek tracks, Wakari Road Competitors need to be registered by 8:45am, race ready and then move to assemble at the start line on McGouns Road. Follow marshalls directions. Riders need to be at the start 15 minutes before the scheduled start of their race (~9.30am). NB: Marshall and Red Cross Briefing 9.00am, then they move to positions Note: Exact start times and classes dependant on entry numbers: 9:30am Male / Female - Under 13 ( U13 Inc. Yr 7 / Yr 8). And Under 14 ( U14 ) and Under 15 ( U15 ) 11:15am Male / Female - Under 16 ( U16 ) and Under 17 ( U17 ) and Under 20 ( U20 ) (i) The Start lap will begin on McGouns Road to spread the competitors out before they reach the single track then the route will use a circuit within Wakari Creek. (ii) There will be a mass start for each age class (with male and female riders starting together) depending on numbers of entrants. (iii) Nationally ranked riders (e.g. NZ Cup XC) will be called forward to the front rows by the starter. They will be followed by experienced riders, then less experienced riders whom team managers will need to identify. (iv) A rider's race ceases when the winner of their class finishes, i.e. riders complete their current lap. Lapped riders continue to ride and finish only when the first rider in their class has completed the event. (v) The race will follow a multi-lap format with each lap taking approximately 15 minutes to complete for the average rider. (vi) Senior competitors (U20) will do 5 laps, Intermediates (U16, U17) 4 laps and juniors (U15, U14, U13) 3 laps. Circuit length 3.0km (+ 1km on start loop - approx.) (vii) The same course will be used by all competitors and so is designed to cater for beginners through to experienced riders.

5 5 THE R & R SPORT DOWN HILL (DH) SUNDAY - 5 th October 2014 Venue - Bottom of Signal Hill (Logan Park High School), The Registration for the DH is at the bottom of Signal Hill (LPHS) - (MBO Caravan). Competitors need to be registered by 8:45am NB: Marshall and Red Cross Briefing 8.00am, then move to positions at 8:45am NB: Approx. times and classes dependant on entry numbers. SUNDAY MORNING - Downhill (DH) - practice (i) Riders to attend the compulsory briefing at 9:00am, bottom of Signal Hill, LPHS School Grounds. (ii) Shuttles up the hill will be available from approx. 9:20am from Logan Park High School Carpark, Butts Road. (iii) Only those entered in the downhill will be entitled to transport and riders will be restricted to two practice runs each unless there is sufficient time for more. (iv) Riders must be registered and have their race number on their bike to show that they are entered. (v) Riders must line up in an orderly fashion at the LPHS Carpark where marshalls will organise bike transport. (vi) The course will use a mix of Signal Hill DH tracks (see map the route was used for SISSMTB and NB - there will be bye-passes around large jumps). (vii) The intention is for each rider to have two practice runs prior to timed run in the afternoon. (viii) Nationally ranked Down Hill riders may have their runs after the other competitors. SUNDAY AFTERNOON THE R & R Sport Downhill (DH) timed run from 12.00pm (approx.) (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) (vi) The average rider will take about 4 minutes to complete the course ( see map). Race Briefing 12:00pm (approx.) All Female riders to race first: Y7/8; U15F, U16F, U17F, U20F Then all Male riders: Y7/8;, U15M, U16M, U17M, U20M This will be run in school groups teams need to rank their riders on ability (fastest to slowest). Note: This order needs to be given to Event HQ at registration on Friday or Saturday it would be preferable to have ed this to the event organisers prior to the event president@moutainbikingotago.co.nz. Nationally ranked DH riders (both female and male) will race last. They will go in age groups in reverse order of their national ranking. A designated sweeper will inform Marshalls that the elite riders are next up. NOTE There will be no seeding run for the downhill (though we may seed if practice runs have time to be analysed). Riders may organise themselves within their school groups in any order they like (but fastest to slowest is sensible). Riders will leave at 30 second intervals. [NOTE if the DH numbers are small enough this may be increased to 60 seconds between each rider] The marshals on the DH course will blow a whistle each time a rider goes past them to warn the next marshal that someone is on the way.
6 6 Jumps maybe restricted to Nationally ranked NZ DH competitors with full equipment (neck braces included). Important: no bikes other than those of competitors can be transported to the top of the hill. NZSSMTB DH Course Signal Hill MTB Tracks
7 7 DH COMPULSORY EQUIPMENT Approved Full face helmet and gloves giving full finger coverage must be worn. Elbow protectors, and knee protectors are also compulsory (although inexpensive skateboard style knee and elbow protectors will be ok). Recommended: Eye protection, Neck braces for elite riders. THE BIKE OTAGO SUPER D (SD) MONDAY - 6 th of October 2014 Venue START TOP of Signal Hill (Logan Park High School) / FINISH Bottom of LPHS The Registration for the SD is at the bottom of Signal Hill (LPHS) - (MBO Caravan). Competitors need to be registered by 9:00am. Riders will then head up the hill, or be taken up the hill (for out of town riders with no transport, they maybe shuttled) from 9:20am (approx.) at LPHS Carpark, Butts Road. They will be sorted into age / school start lists) as they arrive up the top of the hill. NB: Marshall and Red Cross Briefing 9:00am, then move to positions at 9:45am. NB: Race Briefings will be held 20 minutes before race practice Start. NB: Approx. times and classes dependant on entry numbers. (i) The race will use a mix of Signal Hill tracks (up and down) (ii) The average rider will take about 35 minutes to complete the course. (iii) Riders will be marshalled into a line and sent off in 30 second intervals based on age group. (iv) Nationally ranked XC / DH riders (both female and male) will race last. They will go in age groups in reverse order of their national ranking. Super D COMPULSORY EQUIPMENT Approved cycle helmet and gloves. Elbow protectors, and knee protectors are optional (although inexpensive skateboard style knee and elbow protectors will be a good idea). Recommended: Eye protection.

9 9 Prize Giving Note: If riders are serious about being Overall champion they need to DO ALL THREE EVENTS as points will be accrued across all events. Awards of medals for the SISSMTB and National Champs XC and DH, and spot prizes, will be after the each event is finished, at the Main event HQ (Approx. 3:00pm 4:00pm) Prize Giving for the SISSMTB and National Champs Super D Events, trophies and Schools for overall champions - Main event HQ (LPHS Paddock ENTRY INFORMATION Age Groups There has been a move to standardise the age groupings for mountain biking, NZSSSC and NZSCA and those involved in running the NISS, SISS, and SSMTB National Champs have agreed on the following: Under 13 ( U13 ) riders must not have had their 13th birthday prior to the 31st December in the year of competition. NOTE Yr 7 / Yr 8 Can ride if MBO receives a waiver see application on web site Under 14 ( U14 ) riders must have had their 13th birthday between 1st January and 31st December in the year of competition. Under 15 ( U15 ) riders must have had their 14th birthday between 1st January and 31st December in the year of competition. Under 16 ( U16 ) riders must have had their 15th birthday between 1st January and 31st December in the year of competition. Under 17 ( U17 ) riders must have had their 16th birthday between 1st January and 31st December in the year of competition. Under 20 ( U20 ) riders must have had their 17th or 18th or 19th birthday between 1st January and 31st December in the year of competition [and must be at a Secondary School] Cancellations The organisers reserve the right to cancel one or more of the events in the case of adverse weather conditions. Please note that there will be no refunds if any event is cancelled.
10 10 Other Info Spectators Are not permitted to travel with the competitors on the shuttles. If you wish to watch the race you must WALK up the DH Trail, from the bottom, following the marked route. Please keep off the trail. You can take private cars to the top of Signal Hill and walk down follow route and stay off course. Parking All parking on Saturday will be in the designated areas in the Event Area at Wakari Creek. On Sunday (for the DH) you can park in designated areas at LPHS. Please follow the directions of the arrows / wardens. Do not park in any areas that are marked No Parking The speed limit through the event area 10 km. Please respect this limit. NB. In the event of very wet weather parking will be in the overflow parking areas rather than in the paddock (see signs - parking wardens will direct you) Food There will be food and hot and cold drinks for sale at the event HQ on both days. Tents Schools may put up their own tents in the designated area at the event area. Bike Repairs A bike mechanic from Bike Otago will be available on days to help with any mechanical problems. Bike shops in town (R&R Sport, Avanti Plus, Cycle World and Bike Barn will also be open). You will be charged for materials and labour. Eft-Pos will be available. Prize giving Will be held at the event location as soon as possible after the XC, DH and end of the Super D for the overall Champion. Spot Prizes Any spot prizes will be drawn through a random selection of race numbers from the list of Overall Competitors. Posted on October 6 th prior to the final prize giving. Prizes can be collected from the Stage. Results Will be posted on the noticeboard at the event village as they come to hand. They will also be available on the nzsssc and the nissmtb facebook in the days following the event. Race Numbers May be retained by competitors.
11 11 First Aid and Medication if you require any special medication (e.g. asthma inhaler) please make sure you have it with you. The Red Cross will be on each course and will have some first aid supplies and there will be First Aid personnel on duty at the event village. Respect for the Venue We would like to use this venue again! Use the rubbish bins provided for all litter competitors must not drop any food wrappings or other litter on any course. All litter must be carried out and put in the bins provided. RACING RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR 2014 Eligibility Competitors must be enrolled full time at a North Island secondary school (as recognised by NZSSSC and NZSCA) at the time of the championships. This competition is open to all North Island Secondary Schools and Year 7 and 8 students by invitation after meeting eligibility requirements. In accordance with NZSSSC guidelines competitors must be enrolled as a bona fide Y9-13 student of the school of representation studying at least 80% of the school programme. NB: Y7 & 8 students can compete if they meet the eligibility criteria and are invited by the race organises to compete. (See Eligibility document link on web site complete and post) Parent/guardian s signature is required to verify details and the school principal s signature is required to verify that the student is enrolled. (See Waiver document this MUST be presented on registration) Equipment Requirements a) Every competitor must wear an approved HARD SHELL bicycle helmet that is correctly fitted and satisfies either the NZSS, Snell or AS 2063 during practice and racing. Soft shell helmets are illegal and use of a soft shell helmet will mean not being able to start and/or disqualification. This includes helmets with cloth covers. Helmets must be worn at ALL time when riding you bike (competing or not). b) Full face helmet, and gloves giving full finger coverage, must be worn by all downhill participants. Elbow protectors, and knee protectors are also compulsory for the DH event (although inexpensive skateboard style knee and elbow protectors will be ok). Eye protection is also strongly recommended for all events. Jumps maybe restricted to Nationally ranked NZ DH competitors with full equipment (neck braces included). c) A competitor's footwear must be fully enclosed. d) A competitor's bicycle must be in good working order with functional front and rear brakes, capable of skidding the tyres. Mountain bikes only are permitted no BMX bikes, road cycles, uni-cycles etc. e) Handlebar ends must be plugged and not have any sharp edges. This also applies to all forms of bar ends. f) We recommend that each cross-country competitor carry: At least 500 ml of water.
12 12 A tyre inflation device, puncture repair kit and spare tube. A folding tool set and a chain breaker. Rules - General a) Competitors must complete the entire race (or individual stage) on the same bicycle upon which they started the race/stage. No wheel changes are allowed. b) All repairs during an event must be performed by the competitor ONLY. No outside assistance is allowed from any other persons (including other competitors). c) Feed Zone Competitors may receive food, drink and clean eyewear from assistants within the designated feed zone. Food, drink and glasses must be passed hand to hand. The person feeding may not touch the competitor or the competitor s bicycle. Only one feeder per competitor is permitted in the feed zone. d) Race numbers must be displayed on the handlebars of the bicycle. Altering, cutting or placing of unauthorised sponsor's logos on numbers may result in disqualification. e) All riders must display their race numbers if riding the course on the official practice times or on race day. Downhill riders will not be allowed on the downhill transport unless they have a number attached to their bicycle. f) No competitors are to use any transport other than the official transport supplied by the race organisers for the official downhill practice or race day. g) Riders must not use offensive or abusive language during the race, act in any anti-sporting manner, be disrespectful to the event volunteers / officials or ignore the race regulations. h) Riders are not permitted to shortcut the course. The responsibility for following the official route lies with the rider. If you do not follow the official route you will be disqualified. i) Riders are not permitted to willingly alter the course in any way. This includes moving rocks, logs, tape or other natural obstacles. j) Riders must act in a polite manner at all times and permit any faster rider to overtake on their right, without deliberately obstructing them. k) Riders who get off their bikes to walk a section of the course must clear the course so other riders can pass safely. l) A rider's race ceases when the winner of their class finishes, i.e. riders complete their current lap. Lapped riders continue to ride and finish only when the first rider in their class has completed the event. Smoking This is a smoke free event. Smoking is not permitted within the event area or on the course at any time.
13 13 Course Access Rules Official sweepers and competitors only are permitted to ride the XC and SD courses during competition. Official sweepers and competitors only are permitted to ride the DH during practice and competition. Awards Note: If riders are serious about being Overall champion they need to DO ALL THREE EVENTS as points will be accrued across all events. a) First, second and third place getters in each race will receive a badge. b) Overall champions in each age group will receive a certificate and badge. c) Note depending on numbers the age categories maybe be collapsed for badge presentations (for example to U14, U15, U17 and U20). d) The overall champion in each age group will be the competitor who has accumulated the most points over the XC, DH and Super D races. (They must enter ALL races to be eligible.) Points for Overall Champion will be awarded only to those who have entered both XC, DH and Super D events as follows: 1st 60 7th 38 2nd 54 8th 36 3rd 49 9th 35 4th 45 10th 34 5th 42 11th 33 6th 40 12th 32 etc. until 43rd and below who all receive 1 point. DNF = 0 In the event of a tie for a placing (i.e. same number of points for the two races), then the fastest time in each ages group in the SUPER D race will decide the rankings.
