4 Project Goals Reduce inspection time Reduce inspection costs Ensure compliance with the contract specifications 4/28/

5 Technology AVL system - Automated Vehicle Location System The AVL system monitors both the location and speed of the sweeper trucks as well as the brush status GPS Global Positioning System Mounted on each of the sweeper trucks 4/28/

6 How does the Technology work? GPS data capture occurs only when brooms are lowered for sweeping The data is captured via satellite (using GPRS or CDMA) and automatically transmitted within the cellular coverage area The csv file is sent to the County where the GPS point events are converted to features 4/28/

7 What was the original work process? The GPS point features were overlaid on a map of the scheduled work areas Roads scheduled to be swept but having no associated point features were circled for review by the Operations manager A hard copy was provided and the ArcMap MXD was saved for future reference 4/28/

9 So How do we improve the process? Maybe we could use Python to preprocess the data What about uploading the results to a GIS Server Why not create a web application instead of displaying the features in ArcMap If its in a web map, can we automate it and create some tools to analyze the data and display the analysis Can it run itself while I sit back and relax in my easy chair? 4/28/

28 Lessons You don t know what you don t know.until you know it If you can do it with a custom app, it can probably be done in a widget Sometimes success isn t reached till the second time around so don t be afraid to start over again Automation is only the first phase, the real benefits are in the analysis and decision making made possible by the application. 4/28/
