Thank you to Pat, Susan, John, Morgan and Kevin for making all the arrangements for the Awards Banquet. I think everyone had a good time and we get to see some old friends that mean a lot to us at least once a year, Thank you to everyone for coming and making it possible. Thank You to everyone who helped at the Spring Swap. I think we signed up 5 new members, sold 5 Swap spaces and some t-shirts and a hat. Thanks for everyone's help. Cruise-Ins will start the 3rd Saturday in May the 16th at The Southern Shopping Center for info contact Cruise Director Jim Hillman at Our Drag Race director, John Rankin is setting up 2 Drag Races for us this year, The first one is June 27th with the Mid-Ohio Ford Club and the last one is Sunday September 27th. Jim has the 2015 United Ford Owners Cruise-Ins all set up and ready to go. They will again be held at Great Southern shopping center on South High Street. This year we will be awarding trophies to the top 40 as determined by participant judging. Start time is 4 pm and last until around 8 pm. The dates for future Cruise Ins are May 16th, June 20th, July 18th, August 15th, September 19th and October 17th. Fast Eddy will supply the music and we will have a table set up if anyone has model vehicles to show. 3 Points & Plugs Submitted by UFO Member Chris Browning The first race of 2015 is in the books, and a Ford team (Ganassi Racing) won the Daytona Rolex 24 Hour endurance race. A great way to kick off the season! However, my mood shifts when I think about the upcoming NHRA season. For reasons that I can t explain, Ford has pulled all funding from its drag racing program (both pro and sportsman). John Force Racing has switched to Chevrolet with sponsorship from Peak chemicals. Long time Ford Pro Stock owner/driver Larry Morgan (who used to drive for Team Nationwise Auto Parts) has also jumped to Chevy. I ve been an NHRA fan since the early 80 s, and it sucks going into the season with no Blue Oval teams to root for. I m not sure who at Ford made this decision or the reason behind it, but I would like to understand the thought process that brought this about. I remember when Bob Glidden dominated Pro Stock, much like John Force has in Funny Car the last couple of decades. Both were highly competitive drivers and teams that won multiple championships. How can a company just walk away from a fan base that has supported their drivers, teams and brand? There are still several sportsman racers competing in Fords, but with no factory support it won t be for long. It will be a sad day at the dragstrip with no Blue Oval teams to cheer for. I can only hope that somebody at Ford realizes that the company has made a bad call, but by then it may be too late. The Daytona 500 is in a couple of weeks, so for now I ll look forward to the drop of the green flag!! 2015 UFO AUTOCROSS AT CMS Calling all racers!... the 2015 UFO Autocross season is almost upon us. Our Autocross Director, Todd Kitchen has gotten everything set up with Columbus Motor Speedway for another great season. The dates for this season are May 31th, June 21th, July 26th, and September 6th. Registration is at 10:30AM, technical inspection at 11:00AM, drivers meeting at 11:45AM, and racing begins at noon The rules are simple for what you can run, any make, model, car or truck as long as it is a motorized four wheeled vehicle. He has already set up two drag races at Pacemakers. The first will be on Saturday, June 27, we will be starting at 9:00 am and running until 2:00 pm. The second drag race will also be at Pacemakers and will be held Sunday, Sept 27 starting at 10:00am until 4:00 pm. 5 2015 UFO Banquet/Roast The annual UFO Banquet/Roast was held on Saturday evening March 28th, 2015 at the Berwick Party House. The banquet was emceed by President Terry Tippett, and Kevin Dearth. Over 120 members, family and friends attended, everyone seemed to enjoy the great food, door prizes galore and festivities. Many thanks to Susan and John Rankin who did the registrations! One of the of the highlights of the banquet each year is always the awards and roasts presentation. This year was no exception. One of the first awards of the night was presented to the club by the Earth Angels for the support given to their organization over the last year. During the presentation they also stated that the United Ford Owners has donated a total of $43,000 over the years to the Earth Angels. The Enthusiast of the Year was awarded to Edward Lefeld (Big Ed). The Lifetime Membership Award was given to Jerry Strawn, and the Newcomer of the Year was given to Richard, Steve, and Troy Faller. Some of the other awards presented were the Recall Award to Bob Peterson, and the notorious Agitator Award to Chris Browning! Sindy Waller received the Fuses Abuser Award, Dennis Sterling received the President Excellence Award, and The Gas Can Award was accepted by Brian McDonald. Todd Kitchen received the White on White Award commemorating his sign making ability. Next time you see these guys (or gals) ask them about their award-winning stories. Rose Tolliver was the lucky member who won the raffle for the custom-made leather UFO Club Jacket. Brian McDonald and Chris Browning were the winners of the newsletter article submission drawing and will receive the new blue light weight UFO Club Jackets. 6 More New Ford Technology Submitted by UFO Member Debbie Near By Leo Kelion, BBC News Technology Desk Editor - March 25, 2015 Ford cars slow down when they see speed-limit signs. The speed-limiting tech can be activated via the steering wheel and briefly overridden by pressing firmly on the accelerator. The car company suggests the facility will help drivers avoid fines and could reduce the number of accidents. However, one expert said the innovation might only serve as a "stopgap". "There's a plan for speed restrictions to be beamed to your car's computer systems and controlled from there, rather than requiring street sign visual recognition systems," said Paul Newton, an automotive industry analyst at the IHS consultancy. "This would be part of an extension of the networks that will connect vehicles, allowing cars to warn those behind them if they are slowing down, which is all part of a move toward autonomous vehicles that drive themselves." The new vehicles will alert the driver to detected road signs via a read-out in the center of the car's speedometer - Such a system, however, is some way off. Ford's technology will become available to the public this August, when it launches the second generation of its S-Max cars in Europe. A spokesman for the US car company told the BBC the function would probably be extended to other models around the world. The system, which is called the Intelligent Speed Limiter, combines two existing technologies already fitted to many cars: Adjustable speed limiters - these use sensors mounted in a car's wheels to detect how fast it is going. Once software detects the vehicle is at a maximum preset speed, it limits the amount of fuel that reaches the engine, rather than applying the brakes. The system does, however, allow the driver to quickly suspend the restriction by pressing the accelerator pedal to the floor, letting them overtake another vehicle or avoid a collision. Traffic sign recognition - a forward-facing windscreen-mounted video camera scans the environment for road signs and alerts the driver to their presence. Ford cars previously fitted with this tech are limited to showing corresponding graphics on their dashboard displays Drivers will be able to set the new system to let them speed at up to 5mph (8km/h) beyond the detected limit. The new system will only be initially available with the S-Max car, which is limited to Europe While some motorists might still resist the idea of giving up control to their vehicle, Ford suggested others would appreciate the convenience and safety. "Drivers are not always conscious of speeding... sometimes only becoming aware they were going too fast when they receive a fine in the mail or are pulled over by law enforcement," said Stefan Kappes, a safety supervisor at Ford. "Intelligent Speed Limiter can remove one of the stresses of driving, helping ensure customers remain within the legal speed limit." Ford noted that in 2013 more than 15,000 drivers in the UK had been issued with speeding fines costing 100 or more and that a motorist in Finland had been fined 54,000 euros ( 38,400) after being caught driving 14mph (23km/h) over a 50mph limit. It hopes that statistics such as this will help encourage consumers to spend extra money on the technology, which it has not included as standard on the basic S-Max model.
