3 SALEEN ALLEY News & Notes: Knott s Berry Farm Fabulous Fords Forever: Debut of the Prototype Saleen 351 Text by: Jim Dvorak Sunday, April 21, 2013 was the public debut of Steve Saleen's newest performance vehicle the 700-horsepower Saleen 351, special ordered by SOEC's own Rudy and Betsy Beyer, who came out all the way from Pennsylvania to take delivery of the latest generation of 351 Mustangs by Saleen. This 2013 Speedster, production #001 (below), is featured in a new Saleen Signature Color called Orange County Orange. It's similar to a grabber orange, but it is a deeper orange with a definite "sparkle" in the sun. Betsy and Rudy drove it from the Saleen factory in Corona following Steve Saleen in his S7 Competition into the 28th annual Fabulous Fords Forever show at Knott's Berry Farm, in Buena Park, California. The 351 took a prominent display spot among nearly 70 Saleens registered for the show. Following Rudy and Betsy was a huge caravan of Saleens of all model years that came out for the show. 8 National Parts Depot Ford & Mustang Roundup: January 11-13, 2013 Text & photos by: Derek Putnam, NPD Social Media Specialist The 19 th annual Ford & Mustang Round Up at the Silver Springs Theme Park in Florida was another success. The annual event kicks off the yearly show season for many, as well as providing an excuse to escape the cold northern climates for others. National Parts Depot kicked off the Friday, January 11, 2013 morning by opening their doors to a massive car collection spanning a century of designs and totaling close to 200 cars and trucks. Cruisers toured the National Parts Depot facility before the traditional drive to Cedar Key, a small fishing village on the Northwest Coast of Florida. After a short drivers meeting detailing the cruise-friendly route, NPD vice president Rick Schmidt led 151 rides on a sunny January morning drive with temperatures in the 70s. VMP Tuning was on hand with their mobile Dynojet chassis dyno in the NPD parking lot. Participants had a chance to have their vehicles tested to see just what their Ford flexed for horsepower. With sunny skies and a high around the 80 degree mark for both days of the weekend, it was no surprise that over 1,000 cars and trucks filled the park for a great weekend. Some of the manufacturers on hand included BBK Performance, Classic Instruments, Eaton Detroit Spring, Scott Drake, Stainless Steel Brakes, TMI Interiors, and Unisteer. A total of 1029 rides participated in the show. On Sunday, over 40 awards were presented for balloted categories, manufacturer choices, and magazine editor s picks from Mustang Monthly, Modified Mustangs and Fords, Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords, and 5.0 Mustang Super Fords. Dates for the 2014 show have not been announced yet, but the show is traditionally held the second weekend of January. 10 Tampa, Florida: October 27, 2012 The Mustang Club of Tampa s 31st Annual Mustang, Shelby, & Ford Roundup was held at the Lazydays Event Center in Tampa, Florida. A portion of the proceeds was donated to various local charities. While other cruisers were putting there cars in storage for the winter, the Florida show season was just beginning. The day started with a cool breeze, but the day turned out to be very comfortable. A few Saleens were at the show. 14 SALEEN WINS GOLD DOWNUNDER AT AUSTRALIAN NATIONALS Text and photos by: Helen Doyle and Harry Martin The 2013 Mustang Nationals of the Mustang Owners Clubs of Australia were held in Perth, Western Australia over the Easter weekend. There are 5 clubs from the states of Western Australian, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. The National Show held annually is hosted on a rotational basis by each state club. This year the Western Australian club in Perth was the host and each state had a contingent of club members, delegates, judges, and their Mustangs who travelled to Perth for the 4 day event. The highlight of the event was the Show & Shine day for all Mustangs. The general public was invited to enjoy the grand display of all things Mustang. An added attraction and unique centre piece was the Aussie Invader III, a rocket powered machine which clocked 643mph on salt Lake Gairdner in It was driven by Man on a Mission Rosco McGlashan who holds the Australian land speed record. See There were over 262 Mustangs including a number of Saleens on the oval and 74 Mustangs corralled in the outside car park as 9 A.M. was the cut off time for positioning the display Mustangs on the oval. The showing was not bad for a state like western Australia. The state is large, but with a relatively small population. Texas would fit into Western Australia 5 times, yet it only has a population of 2.6 million. The largest spectator crowd ever at a Mustang Show and Shine in Western Australia had the privilege to view a stunning array of muscle and glint in your eyes colour variations combined with the classic styles of the Pony car from 1964 to the present. SALEEN SETS NEW STANDARDS A select group of the more elite Mustangs, including Harry Martin s Saleen S281 Speedster #98-10 were entered for Concours judging whereby points are allocated under strict guidelines in line with the MCA towards a maximum of 1,000 points. Precise detail concentrates on judging the underbody, interior, engine bay, paint & body work, as well as originality and cleanliness. Each state has a number of qualified judges who meticulously go through each Mustang with a fine tooth comb searching for point deductions. To win a gold award the Mustang must exceed 901 points. The National body is very conversant with the early model Mustangs; however the later models including the 4 th & 5 th generations are less well known by the judging panel here in Australia. This was the first time the Saleen had been entered into this judging event and the judges were bedazzled by such a fine specimen of a Mustang in incredibly pristine condition. It was for this reason that the National Body of Judges made a decision to use the Saleen as a measuring stick to update its judging criteria so they could advance into the later generations of Mustangs. A key player in this process is Craig Dean from Mustang Motor Sport. He is the exclusive Australia Saleen Importer & Distributor. Craig Dean was a major sponsor for the Mustang Nationals. He sponsored the trophy awards and can be seen presenting Harry and Helen their gold award at the presentation red and black themed dinner. SHOOT OUT AT THE OK CORRAL Text and photos by: Helen Doyle and Harry Martin Besides the Show & Shine day, other highlights included a Wild West night with an array of hilarious costumes that, considering we are Aussies, General Custer & Sitting Bull would have been proud of. Harry also stole the show with his slick impersonation of a union soldier which convinced the judges to award him the best dressed outfit for the night. From then on he was referred to as General Custer. Other highlights included a number of cruises along the stunning sunset coast which meanders north-south along the Indian Ocean, BBQ s, dinners, and charity auctions. To commemorate the event, a surprise recorded greeting from Steve Prewitt of the MCA was played at the show. This greeting was combined with a letter of acknowledgement which was framed & displayed for all to see. Above is a picture of our club President, Rob Bloxham, who has just recently imported via Mustang Motor Sports, the very first Saleen Parnelli Jones that is in Western Australia. Rob can be seen with his #153 Grabber Orange pride & joy about to depart on a cruise. Due to a hot day, the static cling race decal #15 was temporarily removed. Rob s SPJ also had poll position next to the Aussie Invader III at the Show & Shine day. Steve Saleen is now starting to make quite an impression down here in the West, thanks to Harry and Helen who have been promoting Steve for over a decade. This has not only impressed the national judges, but with six Saleens now in our club, it is making our club members stand up, take notice, and consider their options to upgrade their early models. With all the car shows that Harry & Helen display & promote Saleen and Mustang Motor Sports the general public is becoming more familiar with the late model, modern, reliable, comfortable, and prestigious Saleens that are starting to become more available down under. One on our club members, Brian McDonough (above & on the right in the picture at the top of page 15), is the owner of Steve Saleen s 1965 Shelby GT 350 (above). It is the Mustang that Steve Saleen started his racing career in. Brian restored it back to Concours condition and has won many awards. Brian is a stalwart Life Member, delegate & national judge. Above is a picture of Brian with the Shelby. Below is a picture taken on April 25, Steven Saleen is standing beside the photo of his race car on the wall of the Saleen Retail Showroom in Corona, California. For several years, Carlisle participants have asked when is Steve Saleen going to return to Carlisle? The answer is in 2013! Plans have not been finalized, but Steve & Liz Saleen plan to attend on Friday, June 7 and Saturday, June 8. Steve will have autograph sessions and will sign Saleen vehicles. Avoid long autograph lines. Try to attend on Friday. Plans are being made for Friday dinner at a restaurant in a plaza around the corner from the fairgrounds back gate. This is an SOEC members and friends dinner. We need reservations by Saturday, June 1 for the dinner at Marcello s Restorante, 900 Cavalry Rd., Carlisle, PA.
