OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF ROCKY MOUNTAIN VINTAGE RACING VINTAGE MESSENGER VOL. 15, NO. 6 Minutes Rocky Mountain Vintage Racing, Ltd. Regular Board Meeting 5/17/06 Lakewood Heritage Center, Orchard Room. 801 S Yarrow St. Lakewood. CO Board Members present: Roger Hively-President Bill Fleming-President-Elect Mark Robinson-Secretary Steve Gesse-Treasurer Bob Darcey Tom Ellis Marcia Hubbell Kevin Lynch Dennis McIlree Scott Sanders Excused absence: Jim Bradley, Bob Mitchiner Call to order: 7:00PM President s Remarks Roger Hively noted that the Larimer Square Car Show that was to be part of the Denver Grand Prix has been cancelled. There may be race cars needed to be part of the Saturday night street party in Larimer Square instead. Minutes Mark Robinson reported there were no corrections noted to the April minutes as published. Marcia Hubbell made a motion to accept them; Bill Fleming seconded. They were approved by unanimous vote. Mark noted as there was no quorum at the April meeting, the minutes of the March meeting were not approved. No corrections were noted, so Bill Fleming made a motion to accept the March minutes, Kevin Lynch seconded, and they were approved by unanimous vote. Treasurer s Report Steve Gesse passed out copies of the RMVR 2005 tax return, and financials Editor: John Mihalich, Jr. messenger@rmvr.com or FAX: (970) June 2006 Dear RMVR members, We ve just finished a blistering weekend at Pueblo, the races and the weather. Thanks to Bob Alder for organizing a great Advanced Driver s School. Mike Pettiford and his crew provided excellent instruction for our group of 20 students. Keith Davidson once again worked tirelessly to put a great group of our Trans-Am drivers together for a reenactment of the famous races from the late 60 s and 70 s. Keith s special guest was Gary Savage, son of the famous driver of that era, Swede Savage. Good job Keith. If you were at the track you probably noticed the group of period motor homes in the back corner. Thanks to Dick Smith for bringing his GMC club friends to watch the races. And thanks to Brian Nelson for arranging a great trackside dinner on Saturday night. At Brian s insistence, Bennett s Barbecue served a great meal to 250 people in 20 minutes. Once again, George Anderson the track developer invited Diane and me to Hastings. We were accompanied by Dennis and Eloise McIlree. (I think Eloise is already making curtains for the new timing and race control trailer.) We met with Alan Wilson, the track designer, reviewed the final grade on the track, and toured the tire barrier preparation operation. As you read this, paving should be getting underway, and should take three weeks to complete. That will leave nearly one month for it to cure in the summer heat before we arrive. Alan assured us that the specific formula and methods being used on the paving will insure a smooth, durable surface for us to use. Check out the Hastings track website at racemph.com. There are a lot of things happening over there. Currently, I am working with Jimmy Aretakis, President of Nostalgia Racing on the selection process for this year s race group at the Centrix Grand Prix of Denver. This year we will field a group of 40 cars in a vintage race. Our track time will be on Friday and Saturday of the race weekend. We will not have a lot of time on the track, but this will be an opportunity to showcase our sport and compete in a great venue. We should have the selection process completed by the middle of June, and deliver invitations to individual drivers shortly after. As always, feel free to contact me with your comments and suggestions. See you at the track! Roger Hively as of 4/30/06. He noted that copies of CMC 03, 04, & 05 tax returns had been received. The Drivers School/Race at La Junta was a successful event for the club. Chiefs Reports Flagging & Communication Pauline Wilson reported that the La Junta event went well, but help is still needed for the upcoming Trans-Am Board Meetings will be held the 3 rd Wednesday of the month, in the Orchard Room, at the Lakewood Heritage Center, 801 South Yarrow Street, Lakewood, CO at 7:00PM. FOR MORE INFORMATION: RMVR c/o Diane Hively West Third Place, Lakewood, Colorado (303)

event at Pueblo; she has concerns over the changes made at the Pueblo corner stations regarding shade and toilets. For the Hastings event, she has 8 workers so far. She will contact the local SCCA chapter for additional help. A subsidy for gas expenses for the Hastings event would be appreciated. Chief Driving Instructor Bob Alder announced that John Brosseau has agreed to replace Pete Myers as Assistant Driving Instructor, as Pete s job requires a transfer. Equipment Manager Bill Wachs passed out a detailed report on the status of the van, radios and equipment Bill oversees. Bill suggests planning for the eventual replacement of the van as it ages. Bill and Alan Wachs are planning to retire from their positions after this season; Pauline will hold a meeting of the workers at Pueblo to address taking over Bill & Alan s duties, and reviewing responsibilities. The Board is very appreciative of the superb jobs they have done over the years. CMC Report Marcia Hubbell & Tom Ellis noted that the last CMC meeting was poorly attended and short. The main topic of discussion centered on possible reconfiguration of the track exit at La Junta to address safety concerns. CAMA Report Bob Darcey reported that CAMA is meeting on 5/23 to select representatives to discuss a rental agreement with the Sutton group, as they seem poised to move ahead with the planned track at Front Range Airport. The Board is in agreement with CAMA that more information should be sought from Sutton regarding track rental, availability, etc. Negotiations for the purchase contract for an alternate site as revealed last month are nearly complete. This will allow a 4 month free look period to prepare construction estimates, begin initial permitting steps, and publish a business plan for the clubs to consider. Hopefully, the Sutton situation will be better defined by the end of that period and the clubs can make an informed decision as to how to proceed. John S. Burnham John Burnham was Mister Front Wheel Drive, the creator and curator of the Front Wheel Drive Museum, in Brighton, Colorado and truly a Gentleman Racer. Over the years, John dove a MG 1100 sedan, a very rare Porsche powered Gregory roadster, an Emeryson Formula 250 (so successful in its day it eliminated the Formula by making it so no one wanted to compete against it), and a Berkeley B90 roadster (I/Production cars in their day with SCCA National Championships), with RMVR. His cars all ran the number 555. John is the only person I have ever known to possess a FWD Go-Kart, one that he engineered and constructed in the 1950 s. Likewise, I ve never seen him at the wheel of a rear wheel drive vehicle, nor have I ever met anyone who saw him do so. The world did grow and change to embrace his passion. John was instrumental in the operation of Second Creek Raceway, from shortly after its construction began. He engineered some of the structural features there, financed the first concession operation (pre Mo and the Cajun influence), he performed maintenance functions and even ran go-fer errands for Bandit Motors, located in the Quonset hut. As the Editor of RMVR s quarterly publication (yes, quarterly, we got 4 issues a year) APEX, John produced a most exquisite publication. Exceptionally printed in black on white, very nice, high quality paper, with clean, fine and crisp halftone images even from colour originals! Precisely laid out, the engineer in him, so that no story was ever continued on a subsequent page. When story copy did not come in, John created his own copy and credited it to others. Unidentified people in photos might be identified as A.N. Other in captions. The issue with the gate folded reproduction of an early 20 th century circuit camera photograph of a board track event was a spectacular highlight. The demand for colour eventually brought the demise of John s editorship as its increased cost caused RMVR to seek cost saving measures. John s efforts as Editor will never be duplicated. Not having been seen at the track for the last few years, John and wife Becky had moved from their home in Brighton to an assisted living facility in Thornton. Shortly thereafter John s health took a downturn and he was moved to the nursing home. John passed away March 29, Early June events, usually conducted at SCR often included a Birthday Party for John. This year s June event was at Pueblo and there were memorials available, lest we forget those who helped get us here.

RMVR VOLUNTEER NEWS June, 2006 Stop the Presses. RMVR Pulls Off Drivers School and Race on Same Weekend By John Twenty La Junta, CO RMVR reacts to track closings by combining Drivers School and the first race of the season at the La Junta Raceway. The students had classroom and on track sessions on Friday, while the students were in class test and tune sessions took to the track. On Saturday experienced drivers had a normal Saturday schedule while the students finished their instruction with sessions of their own on track. On Sunday, the students joined their normal run groups for their first taste of racing with the experienced drivers. They said it couldn t be done, but they were proven wrong. It was a safe and exciting weekend for all the participants. One worker per corner on Friday gave way to a fairly full crew by Saturday and Sunday. A Saturday night Pot Luck provided food and refreshment after a long day in the sun. Congratulations to Bob Alder and Pete Myers, Chief and Assistant Chief Driving Instructors, for adapting to conditions and producing a good school weekend. Trans-Am cars Return to Pueblo By John Twenty Pueblo, CO RMVR staged it s annual Trans-Am Reunion at PMI Motorsports Park this past weekend. Since this reporter is so late starting this newsletter he can report first hand on the action. Five groups of cars took to the track for a test of the driver s ability to withstand the heat of the high desert. A high temperature of 100 degrees on Saturday was tempered a little by late day cloud cover. No matter what the weather brings however, the drivers are out there trying their hardest. Saturday night included dinner in the tent with informative talks by the people who were there for the original Trans-AM Series. Sunday brought the heat again, but the racing was hotter. Everyone stayed safe and we enjoyed the weekend without incident. Thanks to Keith Davidson for another successful TA Reunion. What Next? By John Twenty Conifer, CO What is next for RMVR? How can they top these two exciting events? To quote Club President, Roger Hively, We are committed to staging a race at the new racing facility in Hastings, Nebraska. Nebraska, here we come. The racing surface is being prepared now and will be fully cured in time for our scheduled dates of July 22nd and 23rd. We still need workers for this event, Pauline is doing the sign-up. Call or her if you want to be a part of what I m sure will be an exciting weekend. Watch your for more details about the race as they become available. PEASE SEND IN YOUR RESPONSE TO THE APPROPRIATE CHIEF LISTED BELOW. If you have any preferences as to whom you share a room with, please be sure to let your chief know. Remember that all specialties are limited as to the number of workers for whom they can provide accommodations, so send in your reply form before the deadline. 4 Helmet Rules Update Discussion continued regarding RMVR helmet rules and updating them to Snell SA2000 standards. Steve Gesse made a motion that SA2000 helmets become the minimum standard required as of 12/31/06; Scott Sanders seconded, and it was approved by unanimous vote. Medical Exam Requirements Steve Gesse made a motion to accept the second reading of March proposed rules change to lengthen the interval between medical exams for drivers age Dennis McIlree seconded. APPROVED, by unanimous vote. This proposal changes RMVR s General Rules in the following areas: Section B, DRIVER ELIGIBILITY, Paragraph 1, and Section B. DRIVER ELIGIBILITY, Paragraph 2, Subsection B. Renewal of Competition License, Paragraph 6., as follows (inserting bold text), and to the RMVR Competition Medical Form. B. DRIVER ELIGIBILITY: 1. All drivers must submit to the RMVR Medical Committee an RMVR Competition Medical Form or one from another similar automobile racing organization that meets all of the RMVR criteria established by the Medical Committee. Competition Medical Forms accepted by the Medical Committee are valid for five (5) years for applicants between eighteen (18) and thirty-five (35) years of age and two (2) years for applicants thirty-six (36) years of age and older, from the date of the examination or the expiration of the driver s Competition License, whichever is later. The Medical Committee shall be authorized by the Applicant to discuss with the examining physician the examination performed and the results thereof. An applicant whose medical form has been rejected by a physician member of the Medical Committee may appeal this decision to the three-member physician Medical Committee and may submit any additional medical documentation in support of the appeal. The decision by the threemember physician Medical Committee shall be final. The applicant may resubmit a Competition Medical Form once the condition resulting in rejection has resolved or the passage of twelve months from the date of rejection, whichever occurs first. B. Renewal of Competition License: 6. If, during the five (5) years for eighteen (18) to thirty-five (35) year olds and two (2) years for those thirty-six (36) and older that a medical is current, a driver experiences a significant medical problem, it is the responsibility of the driver to submit a letter from his or her treating physician stating that it is safe for him or her to resume racing. Discussion about 1 year intervals for drivers age 60 and over was tabled. Directors & Officers Liability Insurance Bill Fleming presented his report on this subject, and discussion followed about who would be covered by this insurance. An accurate quote could not be obtained without release of club financial details, which Bill was unwilling to release without Board approval. Bill made a motion that he is allowed to release club financial information for the purpose of obtaining liability insurance quotes. Marcia Hubbell seconded. APPROVED. FOR: Fleming, Robinson, Gesse, Ellis, Hubbell, Lynch, McIlree, Sanders. OPPOSED: Darcey. Seat Belt/HANS Device Roger Hively noted that there may be some conflict with our rules when recommended belts are used with a HANS device. He is in an information-gathering mode; and will meet with a HANS representative to get more information. Proposed Rules Change-License Renewal Process Bob Alder, as Chief Driving Instructor, presented his recommendation for amending our rules regarding if a member doesn t race with us last year, their license won t automatically be renewed even if their membership & medical are current. Bob s reasons for change are as follows: 1) Inconvenience to drivers because they did not race for a year, for any reason. 2) Difficulty to capture data necessary to make rule effective. 3) Ineffective method of preventing return of a bad driver; other rules & procedures are already in place that accomplishes this. The proposal would delete one line from the RMVR General Rules as shown: B. DRIVER ELIGIBILITY 2. All drivers must complete the following RMVR Competition License requirements: B. Renewal of Competition License: 1. Drivers who renew their RMVR membership, who had a valid RMVR Competition License from the immediate past year,(delete: who competed in one RMVR race during that year), and who have a current competition medical on file may be issued a Competition License renewal. Scott Sanders made a motion to accept this proposal a first reading of the rules change; Tom Ellis seconded. APPROVED. FOR: Fleming, Robinson, Gesse, Darcey, Ellis, Hubbell, Lynch, Sanders. OPPOSED: McIlree. John Burnham Memorial Decal Bill Rosenbach requested $100 for decals to honor the memory of John Burnham. John was the long-time editor of the APEX magazine and raced some unusual cars with RMVR. Tom Ellis made a motion to contribute $100 for this purpose; Dennis McIlree seconded. APPROVED. FOR: Fleming, Hubbell, Ellis, Darcey, Lynch, McIlree. OPPOSED: None. ABSTAIN: Gesse, Sanders, Robinson. Open Discussion: Richard Griffin thanked all who called, visited, and sent cards during his recuperation from hip repair surgery. Diane Hively noted that 10 copies of the recent APEX magazine were sent to the Danny Collins family, and his widow Carol thanked the club for the thoughtfulness. Meeting adjourned, 8:57PM Mark Robinson, Secretary

Call Steve at PUEBLO TRANS-AM INVITATIONAL by Pat Dent Rocky Mountain Vintage Racing hosted the Trans-Am Invitational and Advanced Driver s School at Pueblo Motorsports Park on June 2, 3 & 4. Under the watchful eye of Chief Driving Instructor Bob Alder and Mike Pettiford (Go-4-It Racing) 18 drivers attended the advanced drivers school which featured three hour-long classroom sessions followed by halfhour on-track session to practice what was preached. The school was a huge success with everyone agreeing that the individual feedback was an outstanding feature of the school. Race Chair Keith Davidson kicked off the Saturday morning driver s meeting by welcoming all and introducing Bill Fleming, race steward and Frank Slejko, assistant race steward. Keith gave a special welcome to Gary Savage, son of the late Trans-Am racer Swede Savage and Jim Jones from Tra-Co Racing Engines. Jay Gilman, Vice President of Pueblo Motorsports Park and track manager welcomed everyone and assured the crowd that PMP was here to stay. The Saturday night dinner and program, MCd by Don Woeber, who came out of retirement to be with us, provided something for everyone. A surprise visit was made by Carmen Miranda, the lady with the fruit on her head, aka Mary Sue, to recognize Bill Miller s 100th vintage race. Bill is a true vintage racer who still drives his 1966 Shelby GT-350H, XHERTZ, to the racetrack. He is able to pack all his stuff (and he has a lot) into the car and drive to the track. Here s wishing you many more races Bill.

Invited guest speaker Walt Hane, one of our favorite local drivers, talked about his experiences driving Trans- Am. Walt and son Chip, who has his dad s racing genes were driving their new ride this weekend, a 1965 Ford Mustang CO. Gary Savage inspired and motivated everyone talking about his family history in Trans-Am and his interests in future racing. He indicated the weekend in Pueblo with the wonderful presentation of cars and the enthusiasm of the people was the real deal. Jim Jones, Head Engine Builder for Traco Engineering in the 1980s gave a history of The Traco Tradition and the many projects they were involved with during the early Trans-Am days. All three men graciously answered the many questions from the crowd. Anything can happen on a race weekend, we all know that; but, a mannequin coming alive?? That s just not right!! Hopefully, Andy Antipas has recovered! The Sunday morning driver s meeting was the prelude to another great day of racing. The stewards were happy with Saturday s activity and released the drivers following Don Woeber s presentation of the tech award to Gary Savage who was co-driving Keith Davidson s car for the weekend. The tech crew figured Gary did all the work on preparing Keith s car for the event! The feature races started on Sunday afternoon following the National Anthem sung by Julia Slejko. Julia always does this in goose bump fashion. She also had some great races this weekend. Group 1, Production 3 grid was led all weekend by Ken Petrie in his bright yellow Corvette followed by Bob Rowley in his Lola and Bruce McGrath in his blue Porsche. Brant McClug and Mike Irwin gave the crowd a show with some great racing. Group 2, Production 1 saw Fred Iacino with a 1979 BMW, Mark Hansen in his red 1966 Austin Healey Sprite and Ron Randolph in a 1958 Austin Healey Bugeye race nose to tail all weekend. Group 3, Trans-Am cars provided lots of exciting racing within the entire group. Everyone had a race going. In the end Chip Hane in his Ford Mustang, Keith Davidson in The Mighty Ford Falcon and Matt Radcliff in his beautiful purple Camaro were the overall winners. There were lots of great cars and drivers in this group. The Porsche 9ll 2-liter cars were invited to run in this group this year. This was a real thrill for those folks. Group 4, open wheel contained 38 cars ranging from Formula V to F- 5000s. Ken Petrie dominated the race in his McRae F However, with this many cars there was always something going on, either equals racing hard or passing of slower cars. The Vee drivers say they have a great time racing each other so have fun regardless of where they all finish the race. They just watch their mirrors for the faster cars and plan accordingly. The FV class was won by Ray Trout with the Queen of Formula Vees Bonnie Mortimer coming in second. Group 5, Production 2 provided a variety of cars with lots of great racing. Bill Howard, Ian Cesare and Diane Alder were the overall winners. It s always fun watching Diane, she seems to always find a great race no matter what group she races in. Bill Rice commented, it s so nice to race on Sunday. In keeping with the Trans-Am spirit Richard and Sharon Smith and several friends brought out their 1970s something GMC motor homes to enjoy the event. Richard also drove his 1962 Alfa Romero Giulietta in the Historic Class for the weekend. Once again, RMVR s great corner marshals, Kevin Rutherford and his grid folks, those savvy tech guys, the eyes/ears in control and timing, and the many other volunteers did a great job of managing the event and keeping everyone safe. They are to be commended for their great work in the 100-degree temperatures. Thanks to all of you. We said good-by to Alan Haynes, a favorite corner marshal, who is retiring and moving to Indiana. Good Luck Alan, we will miss you! See you all at the next event.
