1 Cruise News Hi Gang! September 2014 President s Message August turned out to be a great month for club outings. For those of us that went to Big Bear this year, the weather was outstanding!!! Temperature was in the mid 70 s with no rain in sight. If you went on Thursday, club members Bruce and Pam Gall invited all of us over to their house for dinner and good company. Friday morning was registration and then Friday afternoon some of us went cruising around the lake with Pam and Bruce on their pontoon boat. Saturday was another great day. The gang had about 20 cars entered. Gang Member Mildred Rios won Best Truck for her 48 Chevy Truck. Way to go girl!!! Saturday night found the Gang back at Pam & Bruce s house celebrating Larry H. 65th Birthday. We played some fun games like pin the Tail on the Donkey, Hoola-hoop.just ask Suzanne S. to show you how it is done, and jump rope with Queen Lilla Kurz. Hot Fudge Sunday s were the hit of the evening. I want to thank Pam and Bruce for inviting us to their beautiful home. Next we were off to Kirby Horrell s Retirement Party held at Lowe s Coronado. Sixteen Gang cars were present along with a lot of Gang members in attendance. It was outstanding to see Kirby standing tall.all 5 ¼ among all the Navy Seal finest. Kirby was the oldest active Navy Seal and the last active Viet Nam veteran to retire. Congratulation Kirby and we all thank you for your service..love you! Saturday the 16 th was another fun Gang get-together. We were at Bill and Delores Jeffers house for the Streak 41 Party and had a great turn-out and plenty of food. Minutes: The reading of last months minutes waived, approved as is, M/S/P. Treasurer s Report: Treasurer, Sue Chambers read the treasurer s report. M/S/P Treasurers report approved by the members in attendance. New Members: None. Correspondence/Car Club Council: Jim encouraged us to contact our congressman to oppose a bill that has a hidden gas tax in it that will go into effect 1/1/2015 and could raise the cost of gas by.16 to.76 cents a gallon. Streak Report: After Streak Party will be on August 16, 11:00, at Bill & Delores Jeffers home. Everyone is invited. Medical Report: Andre Zatarian broke his arm when he fell into an 18-foot trench. Phil Leatherman, Wild Thing, had a stroke. Mary, his wife, says he is doing pretty well. Old Business: None. New Business: Motion made by Martin Hibsch and a second by Mike Newell to change our by-laws Sec and to allow vehicles Pre-1959 from the current Pre-1949 into the club. The motion was made without discussion. Discussions and voting on the motion will take place at the next scheduled meeting on September 3, The Secretary will send out a notice to all members prior to the next meeting. Club Store: We have a new vendor for our club shirts. Still working with them on the logo and should have a finished product soon. Club Putt/Tech Night: Nothing to report. Runs/Reviews: None. Cars & Parts: Were announced. Raffle: 50/50 Raffle raised $ Mike Boehmke was the lucky winner of $ in this months 50/50. 5 Last Vietnam Era SEAL Retires CORONADO, Calif. - - Master Chief Special Warfare Operator (SEAL) Kirby D. Horrell, the last active duty SEAL to have served in combat operations during the Vietnam War, retired during a ceremony at Coronado, Ca., Aug. 14. The ceremony celebrated a career spanning nearly 47 years for Horrell, who enlisted in the Navy on Nov. 15, 1967 and attended Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL as part of class 49 shortly thereafter. Retired Capt. John McTighe, former teammate of Horrell s, was a guest speaker for the ceremony and highlighted Horrell s impact on the on the Naval Special Warfare community. "The accomplishments we ve made since September 11, 2001 were made upon your actions," said McTighe. "We ve built so much on your legacy." Despite the personal recognition, Horrell shied away from discussing his own accomplishments, instead focusing on the impact of Vietnam era SEALs, as a whole, on the NSW community. This ceremony isn t about me, this is really about all the SEALs who were in Vietnam, said Horrell. It s about all of us who stood shoulder to shoulder fighting a very unpopular war. We built the foundation of NSW that everything today stands on. At the conclusion of the ceremony, after being piped over the side with his wife Terri in Navy tradition, Horrell asked the other present members of class 49 to join him in being piped over the side as a Team. One after another, more than a dozen SEALs filed across the red carpet to a standing ovation. With that final walk, Horrell concluded his Navy career surrounded by the very people with whom it had begun.
